He has developed a course for certifying OD’s in the use of injections in primary eye care that has been used by several states, and which was required for licensure renewal of North Carolina optometrists. Dr. Fanelli is a Contributing Editor for Review of Optometry, and is the author of the bi-monthly Glaucoma Grand Rounds column. He is a past President of the North Carolina State Board of Examiners in Optometry. He is also a past Trustee of the North Carolina State Optometric Society, where he served as Continuing Education Chairman. Dr. Augustine is a native of Ohio and is a Brecksville High School graduate. He then went on to become a Flyer at the University of Dayton where he received a BS degree in Biology. From Dayton, Jeffrey went on to Chicago where he attended Illinois College of Optometry. To further enhance his career, Dr. Augustine went on to complete his optometry residency at the Cleveland VA Medical Center. He wasn’t done yet! Dr. Augustine then saw the bright future in refractive surgery and decided to do a fellowship at the Newman Eye Institute in DeLand, Florida, focused on optometric refractive surgery clinical management. Prior to LASIK being approved in the United States, Dr. Augustine and Dr. Robert Wiley traveled to China to further increase their knowledge. Dr. Augustine has devoted his entire career to the perioperative optometric management of the refractive surgery patient. Beyond managing thousands of patients over two decades, Dr. Augustine has written several iconic articles on the optometric management of the refractive surgery patient. He continues to lecture throughout the United States and is involved in many clinical research projects.

To further enhance his career, Dr. Augustine went on to complete his optometry residency at the Cleveland VA Medical Center. He wasn’t done yet! Dr. Augustine then saw the bright future in refractive surgery and decided to do a fellowship at the Newman Eye Institute in DeLand, Florida, focused on optometric refractive surgery clinical management. Prior to LASIK being approved in the United States, Dr. Augustine and Dr. Robert Wiley traveled to China to further increase their knowledge. Dr. Augustine has devoted his entire career to the perioperative optometric management of the refractive surgery patient. Beyond managing thousands of patients over two decades, Dr. Augustine has written several iconic articles on the optometric management of the refractive surgery patient. He continues to lecture throughout the United States and is involved in many clinical research projects.

Later he joined the administration of ICO in 2001 and held several adminstrative positions until his retirement in 2021. During his optometric career, he has been a consultant for Alcon, Zeiss, Hoya, and several Ophthalmology practices in the Chicagoland area, as well as an expert witness for eye care litigation. Dr. Brandys has been a long-time volunteer for the Illinois and American Optometric Associations and state and federal lobbyist. He was elected President of the IOA in 2000 being the youngest OD ever to do so. The following year, the AOA recognized him as the national Young Optometrist of the Year. Dr. Brandys is currently an associate in private practice in Lockport, IL and is the Principal Owner of Stingray Strategies, consulting firm for eye care industry clients.

Dr. Fishman was an undergraduate chemistry major and then earned a Ph.D. from Stanford in Chemistry and Neuroscience working in the area of lasers, microfluidics, and neuroscience. Dr. Fishman then conducted post-doctoral research Neurobiology working in the field of retinal ganglion cell nerve regeneration. He earned an M.D. from Stanford and after his medical internship, Dr. Fishman joined Stanford Ophthalmology both as an ophthalmology resident and faculty and founded the Ophthalmic Tissue Engineering Laboratory (OTEL). As director of OTEL. he was awarded one of the first BIO-X grants and became the founder of the artificial retina prosthesis project which has recently gone into clinical trials for patients with macular degeneration. After completing his residency training in advanced eye surgery and medical treatment for eye diseases at Stanford, Dr. Fishman started his own concierge ophthalmology practice in Palo Alto where he continues to lead advancements in ocular surface disease and novel diagnostics for dry eye, cancer detection, and the ocular microbiome. Dr. Fishman has a special interest in digital health and has co-founded several silicon-valley start-ups. Dr. Fishman has co-authored 34 Peer-reviewed Publications, 11 U.S. Patents, and his research has been highlighted in Scientific American, The Economist, JAMA, and Ophthalmology Times.

Alessio Fasano, MD, is the W. Allan Walker Chair of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at MassGeneral Hospital for Children. His visionary research, which established the rate of celiac disease at one in 133 people, led to the awareness of celiac disease as a growing public health problem in the United States. Dr. Fasano founded the Center for Celiac Research and Treatment in 1996, where he treats adults and children for gluten-related disorders.
