E63 | Open Objectivism
In this episode of Open College, Dr. Stephen Hicks tackles one of the most defining questions inside Objectivism: Is Ayn Rand’s philosophy an open system or a closed one? Drawing from his 2023 debate in Belgrade, Hicks shows why philosophy must operate as a science of discovery rooted in evidence, method, and independent judgment rather than a fixed doctrine. He separates Rand the artist (whose fiction is untouchable) from Rand the scientist (whose philosophical system remains open to refinement), and explains how to think about completeness, correctness, and the role of benevolence in disagreement. Topics Covered: • Objectivism as a scientific discipline • Rand’s distinction between art and philosophy • Completeness vs. correctness in philosophical systems • How to approach disagreements with Rand or other thinkers • Avoiding dogma and intellectual “elites” • Why young Objectivists should ignore old movement battles • Reality and reason as the only true authorities Listen, learn, and keep thinking independently.

EP#62 | Why Sam Harris Matters
In this episode of Open College, Stephen Hicks reflects on the significance of Sam Harris as a public intellectual, drawing from his foreword to Sam Harris: Critical Responses. Hicks explores Harris’s wide-ranging contributions from morality, free will, and consciousness to religion, psychedelics, artificial intelligence, and politics arguing that Harris embodies a rare “third culture” synthesis of science and humanism at a time when philosophy has been split by C.P. Snow’s “two cultures” divide. Along the way, Hicks contrasts Harris’s reductionist approach with Jordan Peterson’s values-first orientation, using their exchanges to illustrate today’s ongoing struggle between facts and values, reason and emotion, and science and religion, and why overcoming these dualisms remains a central challenge for contemporary philosophy.

EP61 | Is Religion Useful?
Stephen R.C. Hicks explores whether religion is useful by shifting focus from whether it is true to why it persists despite debates over its truth. He presents tough questions for both believers and non-believers, challenging the origins of belief and the consequences of disbelief. Through historical and philosophical reflection—highlighting figures like Hume, Kant, and Kierkegaard—he concludes that major thinkers agreed religious arguments fail rationally. Yet religion endures, suggesting its power lies not in truth but in its psychological, social, or pragmatic functions. The real question becomes: What does religion do for people, and why does that matter?

Open College with Dr. Stephen Hicks | EP60 | Pathological Varieties of Altruism
Conventional wisdom holds that altruism - putting others' interests before our own - is inherently virtuous. However, research reveals a more complex reality: when individuals strongly identify with a group, their sense of personal responsibility often diminishes in favor of group loyalty, leading to behaviors they might otherwise consider unethical. This phenomenon manifests when people rationalize questionable actions by citing their duty to the collective. This "pathological altruism" has profound implications for human behavior and morality. Studies show that people are more likely to engage in unethical behavior when they see members of their own group doing so, while being less influenced by the actions of outsiders. This dynamic can escalate to disturbing extremes, where intense group loyalty leads individuals to justify harmful actions against those deemed outsiders, challenging our traditional understanding of selflessness and sacrifice. The research raises important questions about the true nature of altruism and its role in shaping both individual and group behavior.

EP59 | Liberal Education’s Postmodern Critics
In this episode of Open College, Stephen Hicks explores the philosophical underpinnings of education by contrasting pre-modern authoritarianism, modern liberalism, and postmodern critiques. Hicks examines how educational philosophies reflect deeper questions about knowledge, values, and human nature, highlighting the authoritarian tendencies of pre-modern and postmodern approaches. He advocates for modern liberal education, which emphasizes intellectual freedom, critical thinking, and informed judgment, arguing that education should prepare individuals to exercise self-responsible action while respecting diverse viewpoints. Through historical and contemporary examples, Hicks underscores the importance of maintaining intellectual diversity and liberty in educational institutions. Follow Open College on Substack. EP58 | Woke Postmodern Paradox
Explores the conflict between modern liberalism, which historically championed anti-racism, anti-sexism, and individual rights, and the contemporary "Woke" movement, which paradoxically rejects liberalism despite similar goals. Rooted in postmodern skepticism, Wokism emerged from a mistrust of objective truths and traditional structures, instead promoting power dynamics and subjective truths. The author categorizes Wokism into four main strands—Anti-modern Woke, The Great Awokening, Dictatorship of the Woketariat, and Motte-and-Bailey Wokists—each rejecting various aspects of liberalism and embracing distinct philosophies. The tension between reasoned liberal ideals and Woke ideology’s reliance on power and relativism has led to ongoing cultural battles, with postmodernism’s influence hollowing out the Enlightenment’s achievements and leaving a fragmented intellectual landscape.

EP57 | Does Kant Matter
How do we educate students for jobs that do not exist yet? Education is preparation for life, and one’s work is a major component of life. Yet the data indicate that the workplace is transforming dramatically. The number of people working in mature and large corporations has declined. The companies that now top the Fortune 500 list are relative newcomers, as most were entrepreneurial start-ups in this generation. Advancements in robotics indicate that jobs requiring repetitive manual labor will become fewer, and advancements in artificial intelligence indicate that jobs requiring low-level intellectual labor will also become fewer. Thus, more people will be working in entrepreneurial firms, and their work will be more higher-level cognitive and creative. At the same time, we educators cannot predict what entrepreneurial firms will come into existence in this generation or what domains of creative and higher-level cognitive effort they will require. So we educators face the challenge of preparing this generation of young people for more demanding kinds of work, to work in more entrepreneurial firms, or even for becoming entrepreneurs themselves. That poses a philosophical and strategic challenge for education: How should we do that?

EP#55 | Jordan Peterson's Religion
Where do we find the meaning of life? In answering that question, we look to Professor Jordan Peterson a man with a foot in two worlds. He is a man of science, proficient in the biological bases of psychology and the developments of psychology as an applied science. EP #52 | A Conversation with Will Knowland
Will Knowland was removed from his role at the prestigious Eton College after posting a lecture on Youtube challenging the third wave modern feminist concept 'toxic masculinity'. Knowland was sacked after he repeatedly refused requests from the college's head master Simon Henderson to take the video down. The video, called the Patriarchy paradox, has been viewed more than 100,000 times and is a refutation of claims outlined by some third wave feminists. Due to the perceived controversy Mr. Knowland’s wife has also been targeted and fired from her job rendering the couple technically homeless. Mr. Knowland’s argument that children need to understand all sides of an argument and his belief that young boys should not allow themselves to feel shame for being boys, has been ignored by the prestigious Eton school head master. EP #50 | Objectivity for Human Beings
Even though we humans have lots of knowledge, we do not necessarily have a good and full theory of knowledge. Yet we should not let the lack of a good theory, deny the existence of what the theory should be explaining. Humans have cognitive faculties with limitations. One can form snap judgments, but one can also recognize and pursue the objective principle of viewing as many perspectives as is necessary. One learns about one’s cognitive limitations over time, so one learns that to make a judgment about something beyond one’s immediate cognitive limitation, one needs to do extra work. EP #48 | Schooling to Develop or Stunt Kids’ Potential?
We say we want children to grow to be self-reliant, creative problem-solving adults. But in schooling kids, do we follow through on that? Do schools teach independence of mind and action or do students learn compliance? Do students learn that life is about solving new problems or are they instructed that authorities have the answers? Do students learn experimentalism and that success typically comes after much failure or do they learn that failure is a source of shame? Does our education system stunt kid’s potential? EP #45 | Slavery’s Greatest Enemies
One the great moral achievements of history is the near-elimination of slavery. In contrast to popular narratives, west and east African kingdoms practiced slavery extensively, both for internal purposes and for external sale to Arabs, who for centuries had transported African slaves to Asia and Europe. East and south Asians had also practiced slavery extensively for millennia. Native Americans also had slaves and other forms of forced labor. How then did humanity evolve to understand that slavery is abhorrent and should be outlawed for the good of humanity. Who if anyone can claim credit for this monumental achievement? EP #43 | Nietzsche’s Natural Slaves and Masters
Where does morality come from? Are moral codes conscious formulations of one’s needs and interests? Nietzsche is one of the great critics of human psychology asserting that we have a widespread weakness and asks what are the origins of this widespread weakness? Should we all in contrast "Live dangerously?" How does Nietzsche’s scorn for Plato, Christians, Kant and the welfare state intersect with the two main audiences his work attracts? Dr. Hicks critiques these and many other questions surrounding Nietzsche philosophy on slave morality and altruism. EP #39 | God: The “Evil” Argument
The standard conception of God that is offered to us by theists suggest there are three major features of interest: God is said to be omnipotent or all-powerful, omniscient or all-knowing, and omnibenevolent or all-good. However, if the God who created the world is supposed to be all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-good, why did he create a world in which so much evil exists? And not only why did he create a world with so much evil in it, why did he create a world with any evil in it at all? An all-powerful, all-knowing, completely good creator of the universe would not have created an imperfect world with evil in it or would he? EP #36 | Democratic Socialism for Beginners
EP #36 | Democratic Socialism for Beginners In contemporary times, most socialists have shifted away from overtly dictatorial socialism. Among the younger, there is some level of awareness of its terrible history but they still think of it as an ideal to be striven for despite obvious concerns. EP #31 Hazony Attacks the Enlightenment
On December 30th 2019, the YouTube channel Prager University released a video narrated by bible scholar and political theorist Yoram Hazony discussing the Enlightenment. Hazony makes eight major claims about the Enlightenment and while there are some thoughtful arguments against the Enlightenment, Hazony has not made them. In this episode of Open College, Dr. Hicks points out the flaws in Hazony’s augments and shows why this video is an example of special-pleading history. We all know the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge. Or do we? At least 20 movie versions of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol have been produced, along with innumerable stage plays and live reading. #29 War on Socialism
William James was a leading American philosopher who lived at the turn of the 20th century. In his essay the Moral Equivalent of War, James describes himself as a socialist and pacifist and is very disgusted with the human history of war and is looking for a solution. This essay, while thoughtful and well argued is to my mind, highly objectionable. Here is why. Money is one of the greatest inventions ever, just as books are one of the greatest inventions ever and for the same reasons. Books are collections of abstract symbols that represent abstract ideas. #25 Thales’ Revolution
The standard claim is that philosophy begins with Thales. Why did philosophy come into being in a clusters of cities on the coasts of Asia minor? Ascribed to Thales by Aristotle: “The first principle and basic nature of all things is water, ”and “All things are full of gods.” Why do historians of philosophy get worked up over these lines? To see their significance, let’s set a context by going back to the worldview of the awesomely great Homer. So brush up on The Iliad, which I want to use as our pre-philosophy-worldview contrast object. #24 Does Power Corrupt?
Lord Acton said, “absolute power corrupts absolutely” but is this accurate? Abuses of social and political power are the ones we worry about the most. #21 Censor The Hitlers
Extreme cases always test our commitment to a free society. A free society depends on our general confidence in the power of reason, that people have intelligence and good judgment enough to handle the cognitive demands of living freely. Yet now our current concerns with social unrest, triggers, and inflammatory language and images has led some social-media giants curating speech. Some history teachers have found their online course lessons on German history blocked because they contain archival footage of Hitler giving a speech or a Nazi parade. Thus the censorship debate has now become main stream. We must decide as a society, should dangerous ideas always be allowed so that they can be confronted openly? Is sunlight the best disinfectant? #19 Stain of Slavery
In this episode of the Open College podcast, Professor Stephen Hicks talks about the issue of slavery: its history and current implications. Even though slavery has been prohibited in Western countries, its stains such as racism and discrimination still can be seen in our society. During the last decades, people of the civilized world have been reflecting on the causes and consequences of this tragic part of human history. The anti-slavery position, as Dr. Hicks asserts, became a part of our moral identity, but its mere presence is not enough for a proper moral judgment on “how to apportion credit and blame, pride and shame.” The issue of slavery must first be systematically studied in all of its complexity. By describing the history of the slave trade, its routes and origins worldwide and in North America in particular, Dr. Hicks lays out the necessary foundation for discussing why and how slavery came to be, what were the philosophical ideas behind it, who should be blamed for what has happened, and the causes of eventual abolition. Through historical evidence and data, he presents important facts about slavery that are often sidelined in current discussions and emphasizes the importance of the new Enlightenment individualistic way of thinking for eliminating slavery. Moreover, Professor Hicks warns against rash judgments and common misuses of group language. In order to objectively assign credit and blame, one should check the premises and strictly follow the principles that lie in the foundation of the opposition to slavery because without this philosophical consistency no justice can be achieved. In this episode of Open College Podcast, Dr. Hicks presents a proper systematic way of judging and responding to this human tragedy that stems from ideas of the independence of every human being and his/her individual rights.
