Shadows on Oakdale Road: The Unsolved Murder of Eustace Compass

In the quiet streets of Maple, Vaughan, a chilling mystery has lingered for over 30 years. A man shot dead in his own home, his killer still walking free. This Sunday, June 1, Ontario Cold Cases - Canada’s True Crime Podcast takes you deep into the shadows of Oakdale Road to unravel the haunting, unsolved murder of Eustace Compass.

November 7, 1990. Police step into a scene straight out of a nightmare: Eustace Compass, sprawled across his bed, a single bullet wound to his head. His burgundy Chrysler LeBaron—stolen and abandoned miles away at a Toronto mall. A watch, a ring, a silver tea set—gone. A robbery gone wrong? Or a calculated execution masked as theft?

Eustace Compass lived two lives. By day, a meticulous accountant. By night, a fixture in Toronto’s gay scene, bringing young men—often hustlers from the streets—into his secretive world. Did one of those shadowed figures pull the trigger? Did his hidden life seal his fate?

The investigation stumbled from the start. In 1990, homophobia silenced witnesses, fear kept secrets buried, and the transient lives of Eustace’s companions slipped through police fingers. Decades passed, but the case refused to die. A fingerprint match in 2019. A desperate video appeal in 2020. New hope flickered—yet the truth remains just out of reach.

What happened that November night? Who saw the killer slip away? And who still holds the key to a mystery that’s haunted Vaughan for 34 years?
