On Halloween 1981, 76-year-old nun Sister Tadea Benz was raped and murdered in her Amarillo convent. Teen neighbor Johnny Frank Garrett was swiftly convicted on fingerprints, hairs, and a hidden knife—then sentenced to death.
But the crime scene was botched, key evidence destroyed, and DNA testing forever lost. A plea from Pope John Paul II couldn’t stop the execution of a juvenile whose guilt still divides a community.
