Scott Talks to David Manheim

David Manheim is an American podcaster who currently hosts the popular addiction podcast Dopey. Dave slid into the embrace of heroin and stayed there for around 15 years, until just four months before he started the podcast in 2016 with his friend Chris, who he had met in rehab. Dave slid into the embrace of heroin and stayed there for around 15 years, until just four months before he started the podcast in 2016 with his friend Chris, who he had met in rehab. Unfortunately, Chris died of a drug overdose in 2018, along with many other people who were featured on the podcast over the years. Laura opens the show by asking David about how he fell into addiction. David explains his love for marijuana, the weed culture, and how working for a weed delivery business eventually led him to acquiring and trying heroin. David then talks about his former podcast partner Chris, who he had met in rehab. The two started their podcast Dopey together, and put out episodes every week until Chris’ death from a drug overdose in 2018. This leads David to recall numerous other guests on the Dopey podcast that have also overdosed over the years. After the death of these people, but especially his former host Chris, David talks about how the show has changed and expresses his willingness to continue putting out weekly episodes. Scott Talks to Jodi Miller

Jodi Miller is a comedian, writer, and actress who’s been performing stand up for over 20 years and has also done 4 military tours including going overseas to entertain troops in Afghanistan. She currently works as the head writer for the syndicated comic game show Funny You Should Ask, and she hosts the show The World’s Funniest Weather. Her new comedy special Decades in the Making, is available now on Youtube. Laura opens the show by talking about where her and Scott met Jodi, as well as asking her about her thoughts on being a mom growing up and when she finally decided to try to conceive. After being unable to conceive naturally, that was when Jodi decided to adopt. Jodi then tells the story behind adopting her daughter, which included a last minute and unexpected phone call from her lawyer instructing her to fly out to Kentucky the following day, during COVID, to pick up her daughter. This leads to a realization of just how hard it is to be a single parent to a young child. After that, Laura asks Jodi about her current dating life as a single mother in Los Angeles, as well as her old podcast Don’t Call Me Ma’am. Jodi then tells a popular story from her life about nailing the audition for America’s Got Talent, only to be excused by producers for no reason. This leads to some praise from Laura over Jodi’s work on the comic TV game show Funny You Should Ask. Scott Talks to Dr. Michael Caparrelli

Dr. Michael Caparrelli graduated from Zion Bible College, and thereafter, pastored an inner city church for 16 years. In 2021, he finished his PhD in Advanced Studies in Behavioral Science. Currently, he’s a keynote speaker in churches, prisons, schools & other venues across the U.S. on a wide variety of mental health subjects. He’s authored five books that help the psychologically troubled overcome life adversities. His most recent book, Monster Mirror, features his 100 Hour Case Study on David Berkowitz, the ‘Son of Sam’, a convicted serial killer who held New York City hostage with fear from 1976 – 1977 and gave his life to Christ in prison in 1988. Dr. Caparrelli starts off by giving a bit of his background as a pastor for 16 years, before deciding to get his PhD after suffering 2 heart attacks. He goes on to explain his troubled childhood with a father in prison and being sent to juvenile prison as a teenager. He then dives into the case of David Berkowitz, from first hearing about “the Son of Sam” as a kid to eventually meeting with him in prison. Laura asks Michael about jailhouse conversions, and how he deals with the emotional exhaustion that comes with being a pastor who visits violent criminals in prison. After that they get more in-depth about the life of David Berkowitz, the crimes he committed, and various family members who were affected by his murders. Michael gives his opinions on David’s mental health issues, and goes to explore some of the things that could turn someone into a serial killer. Scott Talks to Robinne Lee

What if your Jamaican born parents immigrated to the United States and expected you to uphold the morals and codes with which they had been raised, but placed you in a diverse environment where many of those rules simply didn’t apply? Robinne Lee, actress, author, producer, grew up in Westchester County New York and was often the only Jamaican American in the room. But what would you do if one day you realized that your peers weren’t comfortable unless they could put you in a category; Black or mixed? American or Jamaican? Worldly or naive? Dianne is the author of the international best-selling book Yoga for Everyone. Dianne opens the show by telling Laura about the time she went to a yoga class and had the staff making judgements about her based on her body type. This led Dianne to decide and open her own judgement-free yoga practice that focused on inclusiveness. Dianne discusses her experience dealing with body image as a child. This included her parents pushing her to diet and exercise at a young age, which led to an eating disorder by age 12. After dealing with starvation, binging, and purging on a regular basis, Dianne realized that people will always find something about you to pick on, and she discovered the need to draw boundaries in life and not always focus on people pleasing. After being told by her doctors that she needed to gain weight in order to get pregnant, she had her son which became the catalyst for overcoming her eating disorder. Laura and Dianne then have a conversation about Ozempic and seeing food as more than just fuel for your body. Dianne talks about hosting events and realizing that sometimes a pivot is needed, and as long as there’s honesty and transparency in your intention then people will find it if it’s truly for them. Before they wrap, Dianne talks about her current relationship with her mother, and how she’s always on some kind of diet. She also tells Laura about planning a trip to Napa in the near future. For More on Dianne:Email: [email protected]: www.diannebondyyoga.comIG: @diannebondyyogaofficialFB: @DianneBondyYogaOfficial/YouTube: DianneBondyYogaBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/only-one-in-the-room--6052418/support. Scott Talks to Dr. Carl Erik Fisher

Carl Erik Fisher, M.D., is an addiction psychiatrist, bioethics scholar, author, and person in recovery. He is an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University, where he studies and teaches law, ethics, and policy relating to psychiatry and neuroscience, especially issues related to substance use disorders and other addictive behaviors. He also maintains a private clinical practice focused on complementary and integrative approaches to addiction and recovery. His book, The Urge: The History of Addiction, is available on Amazon. And his podcast, Flourishing After Addiction, is available wherever you listen to podcasts. Dr. Carl Erik opens the show by telling Laura about his alcohol and stimulant dependency before and throughout college. This led to a manic episode that resulted in him being admitted to a psych ward he had previously interviewed at. He goes on to explain some of his manic behaviors while being treated, including thinking that he knew better than the doctors caring for him. He also explains the specialized program he was put into and given a specialized 5-year contract so it wouldn’t negatively affect his career. Dr. Carl Erik then talks about “good drugs” vs “bad drugs” and how they disproportionately affect minority communities. This leads to a conversation about the history of addiction and how addiction can become your identity. Before they finish, Laura asks about his time after getting out of the psych ward, as well as what someone should do when they don’t think they’re getting the right treatment for their substance abuse issues.
