Dr. Magny grew up in Boston, Massachusetts where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology from the University of Massachusetts at Boston. Dr. Magny relocated to Sacramento where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Emergency Services Administration from the California State University at Long Beach, and a Doctorate Degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of La Verne. Currently a police officer in the Sacramento Police Department, Dr. Magny works in patrol. Previous assignments included Narcotics, School Resource Officer, Crime Suppression Unit, and the Parole Intervention Team. Although women are at greater risk for negative consequences following traumatic events, many often hesitate to seek mental health treatment. Survivors often wait years to receive help, while others never receive treatment at all. Untreated posttraumatic symptoms not only have tremendous mental health implications but can also lead to adverse effects on physical health. Female survivors may encounter physical symptoms including headaches, gastrointestinal problems, and sexual dysfunction. Although the mental and physical symptoms of PTSD-stress can be quite debilitating, trauma is often undiagnosed by health professionals due to a lack of training, time, and resources. January 2021 marks the ninth month of a pandemic. Drinking (day and otherwise) has skyrocketed, and for people in recovery, relapsing (drinking again after one has set a sobriety date) has too. Now that coronavirus vaccines are being distributed, the first people to get it have become de facto ambassadors for it, reassuring the public that it’s safe. As U.S. states figure out how to roll out the inoculations, some people are wondering whether to get it at all, often because they’re scrolling in online communities where emotional anti-vaxxer anecdotes spread faster than accepted science. Picture this: Two weeks after a traumatic birth and a cerebral palsy diagnosis, you are adopted and taken to a small town in the south where you and your siblings are the only Black children with white parents. Imagine then, being thirteen-years-old and making the decision to come out and tell your family that you are a lesbian. Nineteen-year-old Bliss Besinger is now a sophomore at Meredith College, an all-girl liberal arts college in Raleigh, North Carolina where she is the only Black student in the theater department. Romance novels are big business. According to the Romance Writers of America, the romance fiction industry is worth $1.08 billion dollars a year, which makes it about a third larger than the inspirational book industry, and about the size of the mystery novel genre and science fiction/fantasy genre markets combined. Look up the top selling romance novel authors and you’ll find a long list of mostly white women. Pick up a romance novel at the airport or your local book store and you’ll most likely find a young, white, cis-hetero, blond haired, blue-eyed heroine. Things are changing though, thanks in part to our guest, Robyn Crawford. Robyn launched Eden Books in March 2019 after one of her favorite authors had her book banned from Amazon for content. My phone call with Autumn Noel was unlike any conversation I’ve had before. This nineteen year old actress opened up to me about being born into a family that wasn’t prepared to take care of her and not feeling seen or valued until her grandmother won guardianship of her when she was fourteen years old. She spoke about an abusive boyfriend and her dealings with depression, we talked about mental health issues and her suicide attempt. I did my own research and found that studies have shown how unwanted children are at increased risk of juvenile delinquency and psychiatric disorders among other things, so I asked her to come on and share her story with us. When we first interviewed Gregg Garfield in June of this year, Covid 19 had just claimed the lives of over 100,000 Americans. But as of today, just over four months later, COVID 19 has claimed the lives of more than 224,000 American souls, with more than eight and a half MILLION cases being reported. Despite the fact that President Trump himself was recently hospitalized for COVID 19, one fifth of people polled here in the US still believe that COVID 19 is a hoax. Today’s guest, Gregg Garfield’s journey with COVID 19 made national headlines this spring. His story began with a February ski trip to Italy, which led to him checking into Providence St Joseph's Medical Center in Burbank California upon his return from Europe, where he became that hospital's patient zero and was given a 1% chance of survival. Leila Marchbanks is a fifth grade teacher in Los Angeles and the creator of the website, A Book At The Table. Leila was able to restructure the 5th grade Language Arts program at her school to remove stories of traditional protagonists that excluded people of color and include literature that reflected diverse children along with their complex experiences. Her curriculum evaluates race, systemic racism, gender spectrum, and eliminating microaggressions and biases. Leila now wants to share her research with educators across the country. At this time in our history, our nation is more polarized than it’s ever been. The divide between our political parties, between genders and between races is growing wider and more dangerous by the minute. Here with us today we have 24-year old, Hailey Udobor. Hailey is a Black woman who was adopted by a white family in Sandy Utah. Hailey’s Only One story surprised me, as I expected it to be more about feeling isolated and alone in her family because of her race. But actually her story is much more complex. Like many of us, Hailey is disturbed by the growing racial unrest that has created a divide in our country. But unlike some Americans, particularly Black Americans, Hailey believes there are good people on both sides.
