Show Notes
Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team two takes command of three major wildfires in western Nebraska, including the Ashby, Minor, and Cottonwood fires. The Ashby fire, the largest at over thirty-six thousand acres, is forty-six percent contained. The Minor fire covers about fourteen thousand acres at seven percent contained, while the Cottonwood fire is fully contained after scorching around one hundred twenty-nine thousand acres. The Morrill fire, the largest in Nebraska history, is now handled locally and is one hundred percent contained, but tragically claimed an eighty-six-year-old womans life. Crews held the line on Ashby and Minor through tough winds, with minimal growth and no need for air support overnight. A Red Flag Warning hits parts of western Nebraska today, especially near Ashby and Minor, where critically dry fuels could make any new spark spread fast. Fire behavior should stay low to moderate, but teams are sending five initial-attack groups to spots like Alliance, Ogallala, Broken Bow, and Columbus to jump on fresh starts quick. Expect some smoke from hotspots in Cottonwoods interior and check fire dot air now dot gov for air quality updates to breathe easy out there.
