Ep 40Armageddon Steel Legions and Force Dispositions in the Third Armageddon War - Codex Armageddon pages 28 to 32
This brings to a close the Codex Armageddon phase of Oldex, and it's a satisfactorily chunky one. A fond fairwell to the Codex that really got me passionate about 40K and a hobby that has lasted decades. Next up, our first Codex requested by a listener. Like my readings of GW literature? Why not do me a favour and post on the Black Library Facebook page and tell them you want me to narrate one of their audiobooks? That would make my week to be honest. If you've enjoyed listening to Oldex, I'd really appreciate it if you would leave a review on iTunes, Spotify, or wherever you found this to help spread the word: iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/oldex/id1574187584 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1aehYQH8DpHRlWNbRufQTN?si=8b69327427704038 Many thanks to Andy Chambers, Jervis Johnson and Gav Thorpe for writing the stories I grew up with. Ep 39The Salamanders - Codex Armageddon pages 25 to 27
Probably the closest you're getting to 'good guy' space marines. Like my readings of GW literature? Why not do me a favour and post on the Black Library Facebook page and tell them you want me to narrate one of their audiobooks? That would make my week to be honest. Ep 38The Black Templars - Codex Armageddon pages 21 to 24
Anyone else read The Beast Arises series? Remember what those Black Templars terminators did to those nice abhuman prisoners inside that war moon? Awful, awful people. Like my readings of GW literature? Why not do me a favour and post on the Black Library Facebook page and tell them you want me to narrate one of their audiobooks? Ep 37A Visit from Sautekh - ’Twas the Night Before’Cronmas
A 'Cronmas gift from Oldex. Would you like to get me a free Christmas present? If you would, you could contact Black Library on Facebook and tell them you want me to narrate one of their audiobooks. Ep 36Ork Speed Kult - Codex Armageddon pages 10 to 12
Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Hey, at least it's not such a gargantuan break as last time, is it? Seriously though, thank you very much for sticking with Oldex. I didn't realise it had been a month, I thought it was more like two weeks. For the last couple of months my depression has really battered me. It's been hard to do the bare minimum when it comes to audiobook narration and voice acting that actually pays me. Doing this passion project on top was asking too much of myself. One of those months was also spent narrating a 17+ hour audiobook for my other podcast, which is over 100 hours work. 1 hour of professional level audio, like Oldex, takes about 6 hours to do, so it was a significant chunk of my time. Thus, I appreciate you understanding why there's been a gap in episodes. I have as a result, however, improved my mastering process, so now its sounds even better! Oldex is back. Like my readings of GW literature? Why not do me a favour and post on the Black Library Facebook page and tell them you want me to narrate one of their audiobooks? Ep 31I Pray - Codex Armageddon page 1
If there was one codex that made me fall in love with the Warhammer 40,000 universe, it was Armageddon. Listeners have requested Oldex covers Eldar and Ork books. I've managed to secure an Eldar codex, but Ork ones always end up beyond my means. If you'd like to donate an old Ork codex to this project, just get in touch using the means below. Ep 30Xenthorp Garrisons - Codex Imperial Guard 3rd Ed. page 32
In which I narrate mostly a chart! There was some lore on the same page, but I felt like it was missing some context without the full chart rundown. Plus, this is the final piece from Codex Imperial Guard (3rd. ed) and I didn't want to end it on a tiny little piece. I've had requests to cover old Eldar and Ork codices, but keep missing out on those as their eBay prices inflate beyond my means. I don't suppose you want to donate one to me, do you? If so, get in touch using the methods below. If you've enjoy listening to Oldex in, I'd really appreciate it if you would leave a review on iTunes, Spotify, or wherever you found this to help spread the word: iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/oldex/id1574187584 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1aehYQH8DpHRlWNbRufQTN?si=8b69327427704038 Many thanks to Jervis Johnson and Gav Thorpe for writing this story I grew up with. Ep 29Colonel Schaeffer’s Last Chancers - Codex Imperial Guard 3rd Ed. page 27
The original and in my opinion best Kill Team. Also a set of figures from my childhood who I've since stripped in order to give them the proper paintjob these icons of Warhammer 40,000 deserve. Ep 28Nork Deddog, Ogryn Bodyguard - Codex Imperial Guard 3rd ed. Page 25
Starring the toppermost lad, Nork Deddog is a character close to my heart and has been since I first read this edition of the Imperial Guard codex as child. I hope I've done him justice, with his phonetically written dialogue informing how I portrayed him. If you've enjoy listening to Oldex in, I'd really appreciate it if you would leave a review on iTunes, Spotify, or where you found this to help spread the word: iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/oldex/id1574187584 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1aehYQH8DpHRlWNbRufQTN?si=8b69327427704038 Many thanks to Jervis Johnson and Gav Thorpe for writing this story I grew up with. Ep 26They Will Go No Further - Codex Imperial Guard, 3rd ed., page 22
I absolutely love Lord Commander Solar Macharius. He's one of my favourite characters. There isn't an audibook of the Macharius omnibus. Be a dear and email/tweet Black Library saying you want me to narrate that as an audiobook, won't you? Cheers. If you've enjoy listening to Oldex in audio format, I'd really appreciate it if you would leave a review on iTunes to help spread the word: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/oldex/id1574187584 Many thanks to Jervis Johnson and Gav Thorpe for writing this story I grew up with. Ep 25Extract from General Serjanus‘ ‘Breaching the Darkness‘
Something a bit meatier to get our teeth into, and the first of two extracts concerning one of my favourite characters in all Warhammer. I still have his model and when I've worked through more of The Backlog I'm looking forward to making a diorama with him. Ep 24Jumael 1 ‘Lucky Aces‘ - Codex Imperial Guard, 3rd ed., by Jervis Johnson and Gavin Thorpe, page 20

S2 Ep 23Lexxian IX ‘Sawtooths‘ - Codex Imperial Guard, 3rd ed., by Jervis Johnson and Gavin Thorpe, page 14
Honestly, there's longer fiction in this codex, it's just all later on. Certainly nothing like the fiction contained in the later 3rd ed. Codex Necrons though. Still, it gives examples of flavourful regiments beyond the big main ones that have their own doctrines these days. Ep 22Mortant VII ‘Headhunters‘ - Codex Imperial Guard, 3rd ed., by Jervis Johnson and Gavin Thorpe, page 10b
My sincere apologies in the time it's taken to get this out. A long term health condition really took a nosedive and I was struggling to get the basic facets of my life done, never mind Oldex. I think I'm on the up again now, and normal service shall resume. I appreciate your understanding. Ep 21A Letter to My Brother - Codex Imperial Guard 3rd. ed. by Jervis Johnson and Gavin Thorpe page 10a
I've gone ahead and started to title these. They're not the official titles, just ones I think appropriate. I don't mean to impede on the writer's original story, or put my stamp on it (even though I am, really), it's just because I think it's going to be easier for you to know which stories you have or haven't listened to this way, rather than trying to remember if you've listened to 'page 10a' or 'page 10b'. This is a really human piece of Imperial Guard life that sets them apart from all the other factions in the universe. With some tweaks this could easily be a letter from a real-world war. Oldex now has a Facebook page! Like to keep up to date with new releases and show your support for the project: https://www.facebook.com/OldexPodcast I thought Storm Troopers, now called Tempestus Scions, coming from the Schola Progenium was a relatively modern thing, perhaps brought in with the Scions replacing the Storm Troopers in...I want to say 6th edition? I also thought the Kasrkin style of Storm Troopers came in 4th edition or later, but having just looked them up in this codex, the picture next to their entry is that of the Kasrkin. The guys I own in berets must've been 2nd edition boys! Despite being very static, 2-piece monopose they still hold up rather well. Oldex now has a Facebook page! Like to keep up to date with new releases and show your support for the project: https://www.facebook.com/OldexPodcast I had a choice between 3rd edition Imperial Guard or Space Marine codexes and listener Tom favoured the Astra Militarum. It's a wise choice; after the otherworldly and Lovecraftian weirdness of the Necrons this most human and relatable of factions will make the perfect counterpoint. If anyone knows who the fictions within this codex were specifically written by, please let me know so I can credit the correct author. The last codex stories were selected in an order to fit in around my work - sometimes I just didn't have time to record, proof, edit and master a 20 minute episode. In hindsight though, a story emerged through all the pieces from Codex Necrons 3rd edition, and I'm going to go back and put them in the right order when I have time. It's with that in mind I'm going to create and release all the stories from Codex Imperial Guard 3rd edition, should the same happen again. And if not, at least it will be like reading through the whole book in order. Ep 16Necrons Codex 3rd ed. Page 58 - 59 by Graham McNeill
Happily, it all comes back around. My first Oldex adaptation was a Graham McNeill story, which felt appropriate given the help he gave me in attributing the authors to the correct stories. Its for the same reason it feels fitting that this last story from Codex Necrons 3rd ed. is one of his as well. Thank you for listening to this first...phase? Season? of Oldex. Maybe I should just call it the first Codex? If you've enjoy listened to Codex Necrons 3rd edition in audio format, I'd really appreciate it if you would leave a review on iTunes to spread the word. Ep 15Codex Necrons, 3rd ed. Page 49 by Andy Chambers
Did they pick this storyline up elsewhere? A schism in the Adeptus Mechanicus caused by a necron worshipping sect? A great piece in 3rd. ed. Codex Necrons, both in terms of presentation and the possibilities it opens. You don't get many characters in these stories as the fiction is so short, so it's nice to be able to do three separate characters in one piece. There's part where the interrogating Ad Mech cyborg says "is" twice in a row. I think it's a typo, but I've included it and played it off as the character having a momentary glitch. One of the things I love about necrons is how they take inspiration from great Earth mysteries, thus suggesting that they were responsible for them millenia ago. In this piece by Phil Kelly he links the necrons to the Orion correlation theory of the real pyramid complex of Giza, as well as those pyramids near perfect alignment with the cardinel compass points. Ep 12Evaluation of Anomalous Vessel [EX-342/26] - Supplementary Report, Codex Necrons by Andy Chambers
This is a genuinely scary story that really plays up the Lovecraftian inspiration of the necrons. The second of two videos I'm releasing this week to mark Age of Sigmar 3rd edition, written by it's creative lead Phil Kelly. Phil Kelly writes marvellously morose Eldar, and I tried to stay away from the typical lighter voice in favour of something more husky and deep for Ulthwé Farseer Maechu. To celebrate the announcement of Age of Sigmar 3rd Edition, I'll be releasing two videos this week written by it's creative lead Phil Kelly. Written nearly two decades ago, this story comes from the third edition of AoS's sister game, Warhammer 40,000. I love hearing from the voices that aren't represented on the tabletop. Went with a West Country accent as: A) It gives the character a salty seadog feel. B) After voicing Hafgan in Lee C Conley's audiobook of The Dead Sagas, I realise the West Country accent can sound really badass. Thanks to Phil Kelly for writing the fiction I grew up with. Ep 2Extract from Deus Ex Mechanicus, Codex Necrons, 3rd ed, page 50 by Andy Chambers
The second installment of Oldex: my audio story adaptation of the wonderful fiction from out of print Warhammer 40,000 codexes and other books I grew up with. I hope you enjoy this story. I wanted to give the rogue trader a northern accent because: A) that the outdated societal associations with accents we hold today don't necessarily hold true in the far future. B) I love doing a northern accent. I didn't like my native accent when I was little and deliberately worked to not have it. Nowadays though, thanks a lot of Sean Bean, Game of Thrones and learning about the working class struggles and resiliance of my home county, I have discovered a love for the accent I once shunned. Ep 1Codex Necrons, 3rd ed., Page 3 by Graham McNeill
Welcome to this first installment of Oldex, in which I adapt the wonderful fiction from out of print Warhammer 40,000 codexes and other rules books into audio stories. First things first: thank you ever so much to Graham McNeill, the very author of this and so many other stories I grew up reading. Graham took the time to tell me the specific authors of the individual pieces in 3rd edition Codex Necrons after I sent him photos of them *all* from my own copy. As you may know, codexes generally only give a list of authors at the start and do not attribute which piece of fiction was written by who. As I'm adapting individual pieces I felt it only right to try and credit the specific author of a piece, rather than say 'it's either the work of Andy Chambers, Pete Haines, Graham McNeill, Phil Kelly or Andy Hoare.' Thank you Mr. McNeill, I feel honoured you have taken the time to help me, and it's a testament to your character that you made the effort for someone you don't know from Jack. You can and should follow Graham McNeill on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/GrahamMcNeill While you're about it, visit his website to see the vast plethora of work he's accomplished: https://graham-mcneill.com/ Since, thanks to Graham, I have all the authors for the Codex Necrons 3rd ed. fiction, this first phase of Oldex will be focused on that book, and I am glad that the opening story in the codex is by Mr. McNeill, as I wanted the first video on this channel to be one of his. Why Necrons? I'm a necron boy at heart. I love all the other factions - I also have Space Marine, Genestealer Cult and Imperial Guard forces. As someone with a couple of chronic health issues who has been let down by people in power, however, I relate to their story of being horrendously ill and raging at those who are in a position, but refuse, to help or betray them. There is something awesome and inspiring about enslaving the very gods that tried to devour you. I probably have an unusual view of the necrons though, don't I? If you've enjoyed this audio story, please follow Graham on Twitter, subscribe and leave a review on iTunes.
