Show Notes
NASAs Van Allen Probe A, a 1300-pound spacecraft, is set to re-enter Earths atmosphere after 14 years in space. Launched in 2012, it was initially a two-year mission to study the Van Allen radiation belts, but it lasted nearly seven years, breaking records. The probe discovered a third temporary radiation belt during solar events and contributed to hundreds of scientific papers. Despite a small chance of harming someone on the ground, most of it will burn up in the atmosphere. Its twin, Van Allen Probe B, is expected to follow suit in the 2030s.
