Show Notes

Alysa Liu and Kristi Yamaguchi, two Olympic gold medal figure skaters, are honored with a new mural outside the Oakland Ice Center. Local artist Julie Engelmann is painting the massive artwork, capturing their iconic performances in gold dresses. The mural, featuring both skaters in motion, is a celebration of their ties to the rink where Liu first learned to skate. The ice center, which opened in 1995, is now run by Sharks Ice and buzzes daily with kids and serious athletes. Engelmann, a former figure skater, pitched the idea and got quick backing from sponsors and rink managers. The mural is part of the rinks first art exhibit, Edgework, which highlights works by local skaters and artists. A big reveal party is planned for June.
