Ken Harrelson, a standout slugger for the Kansas City Athletics in the 1960s, was born in South Carolina and signed with the team right out of high school. He debuted in the majors at age 21 and quickly became a power hitter, leading the Athletics in homers with 23 in 1965. After being traded and released by the Athletics, Harrelson found success with the Boston Red Sox, batting .275 with 35 homers and 109 RBIs in 1968, earning an All-Star nod and finishing third in MVP voting. He later played for the Indians and Cleveland before retiring in 1971 to pursue a golf career. Harrelson is now best known as a broadcaster, calling games for the Red Sox, White Sox, and Yankees.
