Dr. Marwa Assar is a psychologist and psycho-spiritual teacher who specializes in providing counseling as well as psycho-spiritual education that are rooted in Islamic teachings and approached through an Islamic Psychological Lens. Alongside her constant pursuit of Islamic studies, Dr. Marwa has studied psychology extensively for 10 years. In addition to completing both her bachelors and masters degree in psychology, she has also completed her doctorate of psychology (PsyD) degree at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Her doctoral research focus was on Islam & Psychology as she completed a research study titled, "An Islamic Psychological Approach to Psychotherapy (2017)" highlighting what Islamic teachings have to offer to the world of psychological wellness and psycho-therapy with Muslim clients. Through Her work as both a psychologist and teacher, she is dedicated to empowering others on a spiritual, mental, and emotional level, and has spent over a decade extensively exploring and merging traditional Islamic teachings with psychology to help others cultivate greater psychological health, navigate their human experience beautifully, and tackle the spiritual & psychological barriers that come between them and experiencing healthy, fulfilling relationships with God, themselves, and others.In addition to her studies, Dr. Marwa's training as a psychologist involved working in diverse settings from an inpatient substance abuse treatment facility, to schools, private practice, and mental health organizations. Dr. Marwa is also The founder of The H.O.M.E Institute, which is named after her Heart Over Mind & Ego (H.O.M.E) approach to psycho-spiritual wellness, a methodology she conceptualized through an Islamic psychological lens to help others understand their psychological and spiritual design and experience greater inner peace and alignment. Dr. Ali Mermer has been studying the Qur'an to understand its message and apply it to the present day living conditions for half a century. He has been organizing halaqas at IC for over a decade. Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Ustadh Amjad Tarsin obtained his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Michigan in English Literature and Islamic Studies. He then spent an intensive year studying at Dar al-Mustafa for Islamic Sciences in Tarim, Yemen. There he studied under such luminaries as Habib Umar bin Hafiz, Habib Ali Abu Bakr, Habib Muhammad al-‘Aydarus, Sayyid Salim Bin Hafiz, Sh. Munir Ba-Zhayr, and others. Following his studies in Tarim, he enrolled at Hartford Seminary’s Islamic Chaplaincy program where he completed his Master of Arts in June of 2012. He then served as Muslim Chaplain at the University of Toronto for seven years before joining the faculty at Al-Maqasid in June 2019.He is the host of SoulFood FM, a podcast about practical ways of achieving spiritual refinement. Shaykh Ahmad Arshad has been a lifelong student of Islamic scholarship and spirituality. He holds several formal Ijazahs from traditional Mashaikh in the field of tazkiyyah. For the last 18 years, he has worked extensively to inculcate a deep connection in Muslim communities with their Deen, especially amongst the youth and college-going students. Shaykh Ahmad Arshad has traveled far and wide throughout North America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia with a focus on spiritual development to bring the masses closer to Allah (SWT). He conducts regular online and on-site halaqas and dhikr gatherings at Zainab Center Khanqah and Musallah in Edison, NJ, assisting seekers on the path of knowledge and purification.Shaykh Ahmad has worked in academia most of his life. He has to his credit a Bachelors in Computer Science, a Masters in Management and Systems, a Masters in Interactive Technology Program as well as an ongoing Doctorate in Leadership and Innovation, all from NYU. Dr. Sheikh Faiyaz Jaffer is the Research Scholar for the Islamic Center at New York University and an Associate Chaplain for the Center of Global & Spiritual Life at NYU. In addition, he is currently a doctoral candidate at NYU Steinhardt’s School of Education. Sheikh Faiyaz attained an MA degree in Islamic Studies (UK), with a concentration on early Islamic history, after his undergraduate degree from SUNY Stony Brook University in Political Science and Religious Studies. He has had his research published by academic journals. In pursuing the classical course of Islamic education, Faiyaz studied in the Seminary of Karbala, Iraq, one of the most prominent centers for Islamic learning. As a faith leader and social activist, Faiyaz Jaffer has lectured at various universities, seminars, and workshops across the United States, Canada, Europe, East Africa, and the Middle East. Due to the political and social climate, he has been making strides in the greater New York area by taking part in a number of interfaith seminars and discussions in the aspiration of increasing dialogue with various faith leaders. His outreach efforts have allowed him to be featured in some of the country’s most prominent media outlets. Ustadh Mike Swies is the Director of Outreach & Community Engagement of the Ta'leef Collective, as well as a Speech-Language Pathologist. His passion is to serve people, inspire individuals to action, and share insight from his life experiences. He received his Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology in 2008 from Rush University. He specializes in the assessment and rehabilitation of individuals with swallowing disorders. He embraced Islam in 2006 and has been engaged in various projects related to community building, Islamic education, and supporting converts to the faith. In addition, he is currently a doctoral candidate at NYU Steinhardt’s School of Education. Sheikh Faiyaz attained an MA degree in Islamic Studies (UK), with a concentration on early Islamic history, after his undergraduate degree from SUNY Stony Brook University in Political Science and Religious Studies. He has had his research published by academic journals. In pursuing the classical course of Islamic education, Faiyaz studied in the Seminary of Karbala, Iraq, one of the most prominent centers for Islamic learning. As a faith leader and social activist, Faiyaz Jaffer has lectured at various universities, seminars, and workshops across the United States, Canada, Europe, East Africa, and the Middle East. Due to the political and social climate, he has been making strides in the greater New York area by taking part in a number of interfaith seminars and discussions in the aspiration of increasing dialogue with various faith leaders. Mustafa Briggs is a historian, writer and renowned speaker. He holds an undergraduate degree in Arabic and International Relations from the University of Westminster, where he wrote a dissertation on Arabic Literature and Literacy in West Africa. Mustafa also holds an MA in Translation from SOAS, University of London, specializing in Arabic and Islamic texts.Mustafa is known for his lecture series 'Beyond Bilal: Black History in Islam', which explores the ties between Islam and Black history and the legacy of African Islamic scholarship. As a faith leader and social activist, Faiyaz Jaffer has lectured at various universities, seminars, and workshops across the United States, Canada, Europe, East Africa, and the Middle East. Under his leadership, ICNYU became the first ever established Muslim student center at an institution of higher education in the United States.
