S1 Ep 128What is a Challenge Donut?
What do donuts and personal growth have in common? In today’s episode, Andrew and I explore the Challenge Donut, a visual framework for navigating comfort, challenge, and panic zones in life. We break down the layers: the cozy comforts in the center, the sweet spot of growth in the challenge zone, and the often overwhelming edges of the panic zone. Along the way, we debate whether you can learn without discomfort, why it’s good to dip into panic occasionally, and what the size of your challenge donut might say about your approach to life. Grab a (metaphorical) donut and join us for a sweet conversation about embracing challenges and savoring growth.RELATED TO THIS EPISODE:"Challenge Donut" Framework - Coming Soon!#HeroToolshed Collection - Take a peek at some of the key tools our Heroes use everyday to level up their skills and mindset. Thanks for listening! S1 Ep 127What is a Constructive Critique?
I must say, I was surprised when Andrew told me he wanted to do an episode about Constructive Critique. This framework can be one of the hardest to master, because it often involves an uncomfortable challenge - giving a friend feedback about how their actions are negatively impacting how we feel or challenging them to keep a promise that they have made, but are not upholding. In this episode, we dive into the art of giving Constructive Critique, and trust me, it's not as intimidating as it sounds! Joined by Andrew and Ava, we explore how to offer feedback in a way that's helpful, not hurtful. From setting healthy boundaries to using emotions and promises as a framework, we break down two key "flavors" of critique. Plus, Andrew shares his thoughts on positive feedback—could we flip the script and give Constructive Praise? Tune in for some real-talk on communicating effectively, setting boundaries, and maybe even learning how to deliver a little love in the process. S1 Ep 126On Sacredness, Connection and Being Seen
What makes a space sacred? Is it the rituals we create, the history we honor, or the quiet moments of reflection we bring? In this episode, we delve into a family trip to Washington DC where we visited Arlington National Cemetery. It’s a place where the undulating hills of headstones spark profound questions about human connection and individuality. Join us as we explore the paradox of belonging to something greater while yearning to be seen as unique. From rituals of remembrance to the universal desire to leave our mark, this conversation invites us to reconsider what it means to create sacredness in our everyday lives. S1 Ep 123Warm Heart + Tough Mind
In this episode, Nick, Tara and I discuss a topic we hold close: the "Warm-Hearted, Tough-Minded" framework. This mental model explores the balance between empathy and accountability in leadership, family life, and personal relationships. What does it look like to lead with warmth while holding firm boundaries? How does each of us define tough-mindedness versus warm-heartedness, and how does it play out in our daily lives? We explore these things from the perspective of a guide, a spouse, a parent, a child…we dig into the nuances, missteps, and moments of clarity that arise when we strive to connect to those around us with empathy and consideration, while remaining decisive and direct enough to make the tough calls that a heroic life inevitably requires. Tune in as we unpack the surprising ways we navigate these two distinct superpowers — and challenge ourselves to bridge the gap. S1 Ep 122The Gardener and the Carpenter
In this episode, I had the privilege and the pleasure of sitting down with my friend and fellow parent, Alex Watkins to dive into The Gardener and the Carpenter, a book by Alison Gopnik that takes a humorous yet heartfelt look at the reality of modern parenting. Navigating the “gardener” vs. “carpenter,” approach to parenting, we discuss the struggle between curating experiences for young people and letting go of our expectations. We share personal stories—unexpected car lockouts, the painful art of traditional oyster stew, and the simple delights of mortifying our kids with “brain rot.” We also wrestle with modern parenting dilemmas around how to embrace the beautiful chaos of raising young humans, creating meaningful family traditions, fostering independence, and the tightrope of kids and tech. Our conversation around this book helped me see the role of childhood in the broader context of the human enterprise and how important it is to effectively hold that space for them to innovate and learn through play…and all in a way that focuses on the richness of our relationships with our kiddos, rather than the “outcomes” of our “parenting”...which is something that I think we all yearn for in the end. So grab a coffee (or a glass of wine in my case) and tune in to laugh, reflect, and (maybe even) feel seen. Let’s go.RELATED TO THIS EPISODE:The Gardener and the Carpenter by Alison Gopnik #BookClub Collection - check out our growing list of other books that we've enjoyed! Thanks for listening! S1 Ep 121Ava on AI: Grumpy Bored Blobs
Today’s episode explores the role of AI in learning. Together, Ava and I reflect on AI tools like ChatGPT, critical thinking, and how technology shapes learning. Does AI help us grow, or does it risk turning us into "grumpy, bored blobs" as Ava so eloquently put it? We discuss when tools are helpful versus harmful, whether they create shortcuts that may actually hinder our development, and how to balance curiosity with responsibility. Are we at risk of relying on tech too much, or can AI be part of a more thoughtful learning process? Join us as we kick off what is sure to be the first of many fascinating conversations on this topic! I love you Avabear - as always, your perspective is as insightful as it is humbling. Thank you. S1 Ep 120The Role of Structure in a Learner-Driven Environment
In today’s episode, we unpack a common misconception about learner-driven environments: that they’re actually just a chaotic free-for-all. For those of us who crave order (even when we know intellectually that it’s not productive!), the thought of kids managing themselves can trigger a “Lord of the Flies” alarm. But here’s the truth: structure is alive and well in these spaces, just in a different, dynamic way. We dive into how structure, flexibility, and freedom all coexist to empower young people to navigate choices, resolve conflicts, and hold each other accountable. Join us as we explore this balanced approach to learning—and why it’s nothing like traditional “top-down” order but also far from “Lord of the Flies”....at least most days…welcome to the party.RELATED TO THIS EPISODE:#HeroToolshed Collection - Take a peek at some of the key tools our Heroes use everyday to level up their skills and mindset. S1 Ep 119Clear Is Kind: Boundaries
In this episode, we dive deep into the tricky waters of setting boundaries as a parent. We explore the relationship between clarity, boundaries, and freedom, and why being clear is actually a form of kindness—especially when it comes to parenting. It's hard work, no doubt, but setting and enforcing boundaries isn't just about making life easier; it's about giving kids the tools to make real choices and fostering their independence. Along the way, we share the struggles of decision fatigue, inconsistency, and the guilt that can come with saying "no." Tune in as we unpack how setting clear boundaries can empower both you and your kids, and why the phrase "clear is kind" might just become your new parenting mantra.RELATED TO THIS EPISODE:#HeroToolshed Collection - Take a peek at some of the key tools our Heroes use everyday to level up their skills and mindset. S1 Ep 118Peace Table vs. Punch in the Face: The Power of Frameworks
In today’s episode of Noodles in the Sandbox, we’re diving headfirst into the power of frameworks. We all know how chaotic life can get, especially when it comes to helping kids (or ourselves) navigate new challenges. That’s where frameworks come in. These flexible tools can act as maps, guiding us toward better decisions, more intentional actions, and clear communication. But here’s the real question—can frameworks really help foster creativity, or do they box us in? And how do frameworks actually perform…in the wild? Outside of the safe walls of a family home or school, are they actually effective? We’ll break down how these “recipes” for learning work, when they’re useful, and how you can start using them at home to raise more resilient, thoughtful humans. S1 Ep 116The Discomfort Zone
In this episode of Noodles in the Sandbox, Tara, Nick and I dig into the often uncomfortable topic of, well, discomfort! Whether it’s boredom, frustration, or failure, the trio talks about the role discomfort plays in helping both parents and kids grow. How much discomfort is too much? When should parents step in, and when is it better to let kids wrestle with challenges on their own? We chat about how to balance patience with progress, embrace boredom as a creative spark, and find growth even in those "cringeworthy" parenting moments. Plus, we share personal stories, strategies for building resilience, and—of course—plenty of laughs along the way. Today on the Hero’s Journey series, I’m diving into the “Call to Adventure” with my adventurous co-hosts, Ava and Andrew! Sometimes it’s mysterious—like Harry Potter’s Hogwarts letter—and other times it’s a subtle nudge or a literal siren song, like Elsa’s call in Frozen 2. Together, we ask: Can you choose your own adventure, or does it find you? And, if a call comes, do you always have to answer? Listen in as we debate, reflect, and dare you to wonder what calls are whispering to you!RELATED TO THIS EPISODE:#Hero'sJourney Collection - Explore how the timeless Hero's Journey narrative serves as the scaffolding for the stories we craft, share, and live—both with others and within ourselves. What Makes a Hero? - TED Ed video - Matthew Winkler - Andrew insisted that I post a link ;-)Check out the fun Hero's Journey Merch at www.SecretHeroProject.com#HeroToolshed Collection - Take a peek at some of the key tools our Heroes use everyday to level up their skills and mindset. Thanks for listening!
