NSP:116 Adam Freediver Stern | Equalizing Masterclass
EInterview with Adam Freediver Stern Adam Freediver Stern is the Steve Irwin of freediving. His contagious enthusiasm has inspired thousands of people to discover the joy of freediving and freedive spearfishing. It was with much excitement that I got on this call with Adam and we had a great time exploring his freediving journey including his struggles overcoming the 'hard charger' mindset and dealing with the resulting issues. We also get into a heap of questions from the Noob Spearo Community and really get into equalizing issues. There is a tonne of info in the interview that smashed some of my ideas and I found this conversation sensational. Love to hear what you think about it in the comments! Adam Stern lives on the Central Coast, NSW and is an Australian 8 x Australian freediving record holder. Time Stamps 5:00 Welcome Adam to the show 9:00 What is the difference is between freediving and spearfishing? 11:00 Adam's non-romantic but quite intriguing introduction to freediving 18:00 Adam Freediver Stern age:31 19:00 Overcoming the 'Gung Ho' and reprogramming the mind 30:00 Kurt "Can you give us a rundown on what the various freediving course levels are?" 37:30 Sven "How can we level out properly when at depth without causing issues of lung squeeze etc (leveling out at depth goes against everything we are taught to do for deeper dives)?" 39:30 Jason "Fantastic, I love Adam's positivity and mindset. Maybe any questions regarding tips on how he enters a state of calmness during a dive to increase bottom time. I feel like I get caught up in the moment sometimes and get too erratic." 43:00 Discussion about Deepweek and what I think about it 45:40 Todd "Adam stern was and still is huge inspiration for it just myself, but everyone in our dive group SinkPhase. We all started out watching his YouTube videos and that's how I learned to Frenzle. Some of us are part of his Patreon. Please thank him on our behalf of us. The dive group was talking about breathe ups we learned while getting certified. We all had a slightly different breathe up. I started with a 4/1/8/1 but went to a 3/1/10/1 after my course. What breathe up does he personally think works best? We are spearing if that changes it." 52:50 Cameron "I suppose this is a pretty common question but would be interesting to hear Adams opinion: What can a beginner do to see the most improvement in their breath hold?" 56:40 Kyle "How can duck dive effectively with a gun in hand?" 58:00 Adams spearfishing life 73:00 Veterans Vault: Equalizing Masterclass The Basics. NSP:115 Philip Van Zijl - Godfather of the "Spearfishing Mafia"!
Interview with Philip Van Zijl - Godfather of The "Spearfishing Mafia"! This episode covers Philip's spearfishing journey from the jump to competition diving starting in Cape Town, South Africa to New Zealand and plenty of places in between. He's a champion of the sport, an absolute legend. He's a major contributor to the spearfishing community, and a big proponent of paying it forward. Something he's coined "The Spearfishing Mafia". Our community, sport, and the hobby are niche. It's even more niche than SCUBA diving. Take advantage of it, and build your network. Big thanks to Philip for taking the time to "pay it forward" on the Noob Spearo Podcast! This episode is provided to you through the support of Patron listeners! Thanks legends:) Time Stamps! 10:00 Introduction Philip Van Zijl began diving in Cape Town in 1968 at the young age of 16, without wetsuits and just basic gear taking the train to get to where he needed to be. Yellow tail, crayfish, and other good species were some of his earliest accomplishments, always a good feed! A master of limiting out on crayfish during his years in school. He even paid for a year of his time at university from the fruits of his diving! A strong proponent of speargun awareness, make sure you listen to find out why… Philip personally procured one of his 120cm spearguns from the legendary Rob Allen, what a story! Think you're bad about keeping old gear? Philip still has his first catch bag he bought in the 60's. 26:00 Early struggles spearfishing Personally, rigging your own speargun was a bit more difficult without YouTube… "If you give out kindness, it comes back to you." – Pay it forward! Learning new spots, on your own – pays dividends later on! Sharing your expertise, and knowledge, doesn't necessarily mean sharing your spots Proper weighting, weight secure locations (Harness vs. Belt) 31:35 Most memorable catch His last dive in Tauranga, NZ with a mate who brought him to a secret honey hole. 15-20 meters visibility, perfect conditions. Kingfish, historically uncommon for the area but are making a comeback. He was diving with some friends, stomach started to sour, and then returned to the boat. After viewing a bait ball of Kahawai, he grabbed his gear and jumped back into the water. Viewing a school of Kingfish, he pulled the trigger and bagged a PB weighing in at approximately 27 kilos! To hear his second most memorable catch on a "popgun", tune in to 35:43! 38:50 Favorite species to hunt Snapper, hands down. A challenging quarry, requiring a combination of burly and stealth. 3-4k tops, but no monsters like on the GBR. Slow movements, be calm, don't look directly *at* them, and let them get within target range. Maintain gun awareness so that when the shot presents itself, it can easily be taken. Learned from losing a 6k Trevally years ago. Learn about the duality of the gun safety discussion here! 42:50 Scariest moments in the ocean While shooting a Blue Moki, the bugger got off the spear and high-tailed it into a crevice. Meanwhile, a surge came and pushed Philip into a crevice in which he was stuck. Every spearo's nightmare. Trying to remain calm, he considered that a surge which can push you in, can also pull you out. Going for broke, he expelled the air in his lungs to reduce his physical profile and was able to get pulled out on the next surge out to sea. Probably the scariest moment of his life. Lesson learned – be very careful when working a crevice while fishing for crays or otherwise. 48:00 Veterans Vault: The "Spearfishing Mafia" Giving back to the spearfishing community is as important as the sport itself. Hospitality within the spearfishing community is unique to the sport – PAY IT FORWARD! Bring your gear as often as possible when traveling so you never miss an opportunity! Reaching out on social media prior to travel and networking can be an incredible asset When traveling with spearfishing equipment, keep "gun" out of your vocabulary. Just refer to it as fishing equipment. It can save you valuable time Cooler bags can be worth their weight in gold when traveling Sharing spearfishing equipment when mates are traveling can not just save on cost but strengthen relationships Be a good host – it comes back around; when you aren't, well then it won't will it? How to avoid losing a knife - use some paracord or dyneema, tie it off to a pencil or other instrument, then tie that to the end of the knife. This way, when you drop the knife (not if, but when) it will stay secured 75:00 Equipment Bag Catch-bags are a must, saves you from going back to your plat "float boat". Avoid harassment from sea lions, seals, or the tax man by simply using a catch-bag. Actually, saved a fishing competition by using one as the sea lions were going from float to float getting chubby on the hard work of humans. Carry two knives – one on thigh and one on arm. To avoid losing knives, use some paracord or dyneema, tie it off to a pencil or other instrument, then tie that to the

NSP:112 Melbourne Spearfishing | Live Panel Interview
EMelbourne Spearfishing 101 This is a live panel interview recorded in-store at Adreno, Melbourne. Panel members (left to right) included Luke Latham (Adreno Store Manager), James Beckan (@southernspearfishing), Isaac 'Shrek' Daly and Sven Franklin (Club Spearfish President). This is a pretty comprehensive chat covering seasons, species, predominant conditions, locations and nearly everything else a spearo visiting/living in the area might be interested in. This live Melbourne Interview and Spearfishing trip was paid for by Patron Community Members! Thank you legends - I had a blast. Live audience community questions included! Navionics Google Earth Triggerbrothers.com.au Windy weather app 25:00 Rules and Regulations for spearfishing Victorian Fisheries Authority 26:20 Community Q&A What are the legal requirements for a dive float and flag in Victoria? FOR SPEAROS in Victoria, any vessel with divers operating from it must always display signals by day or night to inform other vessel users. The daytime diver below signal is the international Code Flag 'A', at least 750 mm long and 600 mm wide for vessels less than 10 metres in length. FOR ALL BOAT/JETSKI USERS on Victorian waters a five knot speed limit applies to all operators within: 50 m of a person, for example a swimmer 50 m of another vessel 100 m of a vessel or buoy on which a 'diver below' signal corresponding to the International Code Flag 'A' is displayed – a white/blue flag. 21:30 How can I improve my breathhold for spearfishing? Sven "I would consider apnea walks for improving my breathhold for spearfishing. Apnea walks are basically holding your breath and counting the number of paces you take" More information about improving your breathhold for spearfishing can be found here 35:00 Jetski Spearfishing? How do you anchor? Is losing equipment an issue? 37:00 How do you find good ground for finding squid? James "The best ground is Southern Port Phillip Bay. Queenscliffe, Portsea through to Rye. But you can find them everywhere at the right times of year." 40:00 How do you find crayfish in Melbourne and capture one successfully? To catch crayfish while freediving in Victoria it's helpful to have a torch for looking caves, cracks and under rocks. You also need robust gloves as the spines are rough and you need to protect your hands. Find cracks and caves that are relatively protected from current. When you get hold of the crayfish don't grab the feelers, go for the base of the horns. 45:30 Do you ever target gummy sharks? 48:20 What is your typical breath hold while spearfishing in Melbourne? A range of breathholds from the panel was 30 seconds to 70 seconds for most Melbourne spearfishing. These are all experienced divers who dive often. 52:00 Any tips for hunting Yellowtail Kingfish successfullly? Svens advice "Time in the water off Cape Shank or Phillip Island" James "Deal with the excitement and try and calm down. Get some exposure to being in the water around them. NSP:111 I DIVE ALONE | The Spearfishing Dilemma
EA dilemma is when the two choices in front of you are difficult. If you want to go spearfishing but you don't have a dive buddy then your choices are; to dive alone or stay home. One choice involves a higher level of risk but also the possibility of fun, solitude and all the other wonders we experience when spearfishing. The other; less risk but a missed opportunity to spend the day out in the water. "Your spearfishing buddy is your only true piece of safety equipment when diving". This is as close to Gospel truth in spearfishing as it gets, so why dive alone? Full shownotes available here http://www.noobspearo.com/noob-spearo-podcast/i-dive-alone/ This episode is a frank chat about diving alone. Pro's, Con's, everything. Listen to this episode and subscribe to the Noob Spearo Podcast MORE on the Spearfishing Dilemma A dilemma is sometimes described as being stuck between a rock and a hard place. In spearfishing this inst just a figurative illustration though, it's a reality especially chasing crayfish (lobster) or another hole dwelling tasty creature. And caves aren't the only risk, not by a long shot. Let's add shallow water blackout, boat/jetski traffic, cramp, current, sharks and all of the other less likely risks to the list. The fact is that having a buddy drastically reduces/mitigates every single one of these risks… BUT…. Let's be honest. Some spearfishing buddies are so shit you might as well be diving by yourself anyway. AND… There are other appeals to diving alone despite the greatly increased risk of doing so. This conversation with experienced spearfisherman Pat Swanson is an open and candid chat about the reality of diving alone. I'd love to hear your thoughts about it in our spearfishing community on Facebook here. Hopefully it is less complicated to read than it was to write. Just in case it gives you a headache, here are the highlights: CO2 is transported in three ways: bound to hemoglobin, as bicarbonate ion, and dissolved in the blood stream. Red blood cells are crucial for generating bicarbonate ion, and for facilitating CO2 bound to hemoglobin. Only dissolved CO2 can diffuse to the central chemoreceptors. Physical CO2 tolerance may be governed by blood volume and quality, which is commonly overlooked in CO2 tolerance training. Endurance athletes commonly have the highest CO2 tolerance and storage (in comparison to short and mid distance sprinters). Mental CO2 tolerance focuses on desensitization of the central chemoreceptors. What do lactate and lactic acid have to do with freediving? Highlights: We do not produce lactic acid. We produce lactate. We do also, however, produce H+ in muscle cells. Combine the two, and you have lactic acid. However, the reaction producing the excess H+ is separate from that which produces lactate. Lactate is produced continuously, even at rest. Even when excess O2 is available, we produce lactate. Lactate is not metabolic waste Lactate is used as fuel, both directly and indirectly. Once O2 becomes limited, lactate starts accumulating and enters the bloodstream (we'll call it blood lactate) Lactate is actually slightly basic... not acidic. But, H+ starts accumulating in the bloodstream too, although at a different rate. Blood lactate can be converted to glucose in the liver, or taken up by the muscle cells once the workload decreases. Blood lactate increases rapidly when you hold your breath, even while doing a static. The dive reflex promotes anaerobic metabolism. The increase in lactate shows that the oxygen supply to the non-essentials is effectively cut off. Peak blood lactate is highest in mid-distance sprinters, indicating sprint

NSP:099 Tim Kavermann How Spearfishing Can Help You Overcome Anxiety
EInterview with Tim Kavermann Have you ever been stuck, frozen for a few seconds (which felt like hours), paralyzed and unable to take action? This is one example of heightened anxiety that I can relate to and maybe it's you too. However, Tim believes that the situations he has encountered while spearfishing have been the key to learning and understanding anxiety triggers and then developing and employing strategies and techniques to overcome it. His idea is not to avoid discomfort but to embrace it and try to use the situations as opportunities to heal, grow and overcome anxiety. Here are a few of the key ideas and points; GET COMFORTABLE WITH THE UNCOMFORTABLE Accept anxiety, learn from it and if needed get help to take its power away Don't fight it, sit with it and learn to move forward anyway Learn breathing techniques to relax on the surface and reduce fear and anxiety Being in stressful situations can help you overcome long standing beliefs Relaxing in situations that most people (even those who don't have anxiety) would panic in Turn fear into curiosity - sharks/current/rough seas. Ground yourself in the moment by paying attention to the details. Fight or flight - there is no flight out at sea. Prepare to not be prepared Relax and enjoy - surface intervals- find what works for you. Speak up about that things that deeply affect you - but it falls on you to make change Get help when you need it from a professional 70:50 Dive Watch Conversation 74:25 Spearo Q&A Could you describe what the spearfishing experience means to you in one sentence? It has given me deep confidence within myself and shown me what I am truly capable of mentally and physically. What is the single best piece of advice you have ever been given for spearfishing? Slow down and take your time, dive within your limits Who has been the most influential person or people in your spearfishing? My friends, these are guys who've been diving a very long time, and took the time to share their passion with me. If you could go back in time to when you were just starting spearfishing and give yourself some advice, what would you say? Stop overthinking it - stop trying to control everything and every situation, roll with it. During your 1 years spearfishing what is the biggest lesson you've learned? To be comfortable in situations that are well outside my comfort zone What current challenges do you face in your spearfishing and how are you approaching them? The biggest one is still the anxious tendancy to overthink, overplan, get panicked. Rather than let it take hold of the day I now learned tools to deal with it. - Breathing techniques Mindfulness Take a break and reset Move spots Meds for seasickness Don't spend a week planning SLOW DOWN Who is the best person to go spearfishing with and why? My good mates! I feel calmer with them, I know they have my back, the take the time to teach me new things, then know the good places to get in the water ;) most of all we all share the same passion and a common goal - could possible touch here on the business we are setting up. What would be your fish of a lifetime? 6 monts ago I jsut wanted a huge snapper of kingi, I had set my comfort zone at what I was doing here in NZ - After cuvier and being in the big open sea in a more exposed environtment I really want to go further a field - ultimate fish for me would be a big doggy, they just look like they would put up one hell of a fight (i say this now but in the moment I would be peaking out!) haha id also really like a mahi mahi I think they look awesome and I ate one in raro once, it was amazing. What is the spearfishing destination that you would most like to go to? Next I would like to go to Raro I think this would be a good step into some difference species a

NSP:098 Justin Lee | the Mindset of a Lifelong Spearfishing Learner
Justin Lee Spearfishing Interview Fierce, uber-friendly and a true life-long learner is how I'd describe Justin after chatting with him. Justin is absolutely sold out on the lifestyle hunting and spearfishing provides. Big themes in this interview include; learning something from every person you encounter (taking arrows), maintaining an openness to whatever you are engaged in and learning continuously, and just being a person who is fun to hang out with. One of the standout stories for me, was Justin being hoisted out of the water in 80 fathoms of water from right in the middle of a Tiger Shark highway....at nighttime. This interview packs some dynamite tips and mindsets. Listen in! Mentioned in this episode North Florida Shootout. NSP:095 Jaap Verbaas | Myoglobin, Hypoxic Squats and Going Longer and Deeper
EInterview with Dr. Jaap Verbaas Today's episode is an interview with the Author of Longer and Deeper, a cross training guide for freediving and spearfishing. Dr. Jaap Verbaas is a crash test dummy of the highest calibre. I geek out way too much and we talk about hypoxic squats, essential tools and mindset for improving your freediving performance and even diets that can help. Standout highlights (for me) are Jaap's experimental mindset and his demonstration of how to plan, measure, experiment and learn from each experiment. If you are engaged in any from of freediving training then you will find plenty of value in this interview and the Longer and Deeper book. Listen & subscribe to the Noob Spearo Podcast on Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Castbox | Google Podcasts | Stitcher | Podbean Interview Time Stamps Background 6:00 Where are you based, what do you do and how did you get started freediving? 7:00 Freedivewire.com - what is it and what compelled you to become a freediving writer? 9:25 What reediving/spearfishing hurdles did you personally face and how did you overcome them? Jaap talks about equalizing issues at depth. 15:40 Canadian Spearfishing. Where do you spearfish? Chasing flounder in cold water with a Polespear 18:40 What's your go-to fish dish 19:30 Longer and Deeper: Overview of the book and key concepts I read the book and really enjoyed it - all of it. I think a huge part of why its such a good book is your Experimental Mindset: Where did you acquire this habit? Are you a Tim Ferris fan? (I noticed the slow carb diet and lots of your methodology is similar) How did you adopt this theorize, plan, measure, adapt methodology? Is this a skill or orientation that all of us should adopt? Muscle mass: when does it become counter-productive for freediving Hacks for improving freediving performance Blood quality and cardio: exploring the relationship Myoglobin: the oxygen holding cells in your muscles. Theories about training to increase it Hypoxic Squats: desaturating the oxygen in your muscles. Measuring the change Hypoxic Squats: How to do them and the device you need to measure your oxygen saturation (oximeter - check this one out) Spleenic contraction? Can you see it on an oxygen saturation graph when your body is steadily depleting? 40:10 Perfect Dive/Shit Dive comparison - great concept (this is awesome for looking at the separate metabolic phases of a dive that you can specifically target when training) Can you walk me through a good spearfishing dive right now? I'm hunting reef fish in 18m/60ft and to get the fish curious enough I need to hold some bottom time. (I'd love to get into the dive phase concept - are there 4 phases in a spearfishing dive?) Ok now the converse...what does a shit dive look like? The physiological demands on the diver at each stage and how symptoms can point to what you may need to target in your own training regimen "The goal of training is to adapt the body to specific conditions. In freediving, the goal is to adapt the body to underwater conditions. These conditions include; Increased pressure Reduced Oxygen Increased Carbon Dioxide Specific training is possible for all 3 of these conditions" Dr. Jaap Verbaas 47:00 Can we talk about training for each of these conditions specifically for spearfishing? CO2 Tables training can be great for spearos suffering early onset contractions Mid-Distance Sprints for reducing lactate and leg soreness on the surface Blood - improving quality. Cardio training boosts blood volume and is proven to improve the quality. Swimming training is good for CO2 tolernance as well as cardiovascular training *further detailed breakdowns and training plans are specifically laid out in Part 3 of the Longer and Deeper book 54:00 EXERCISES Stretching (what about for 37 year old weapons?) Animal Walks? The crab walk - I can't do it. Hypoxic Squats. How and why (this seems to be the biggest needle mover - why?) Blood quality - Cardio - freedivers (top level can be anti) Yoga and breathing 62:20 DIET: Myth Busting (are you rehearsing for the show)? Alkaline Diet? Carbs - are they bad? Dairy/Mucus relationship? Ketosis? (Pete Attia in the Tools of Titans book discussed) Slow carb? NSP:093 Tom Blandford GWS stories and respecting your prey
Interview with Tom Blandford Great White Shark tales, White Sea Bass chasing and an epic Guadalupe day surrounded by huge fish. Sound like a fun listen? These are just a few of the highlights of this interview with veteran spearo Tom Blandford. As mentioned in the intro, I purchased (and read) Tom's first book 'A Dented Badge' which has stories about his life serving in the LAPD during the 70's and 80's. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think its a nice compliment to this interview which focuses on his spearfishing life. Listen in:) Full shownotes and pictures available at http://www.noobspearo.com/noob-spearo-podcast/tom-blandford/ A bit about Tom Blandford "He's been diving forever -- he decided to go to a local junior college back in the 60s because that would allow him to dive more than some of his other options. He was a founding member of the LAPD dive unit. He's been a member of the Long Beach Neptunes since the early 80s (if not earlier). He made a bunch of trips to Baja in the 80s and 90s -- actually spent several months once living out of a tent and a van on one of those trips, diving every day. More recently, he's taken to cruising in the Sea of Cortez and has dived/spearfished in tons of different spots. Aside from all that, he's mentioned in Terry Maas's book in the story about the white shark incident in 1984 at Guadalupe Island -- that's the one where Harry Ingram was launched out of the water by a white shark. As luck would have it, my dad had a front row seat and helped get Harry out of the water. He also has his own white shark story from 1988 where he actually shot a white shark at point blank range! He's an old salt now (74 in November), but he still dives quite a bit." - Ron Blandford Interview Time Stamps 4:00 Tom's beginnings. NSP:092 Captain Dan Walsh Halibut insights and vintage gear
Interview with Captain Dan Walsh Full shownotes here http://www.noobspearo.com/noob-spearo-podcast/captain-dan-walsh/ Interview with Dan Walsh Vintage spearfishing equipment, advice and stories about spearfishing pioneers, and insights into hunting Halibut aka barn door. Dan Walsh has spent 50+ years on the water spearfishing, scuba diving, captaining boats, chasing abalone and making TV shows about the ocean, Dan has no shortage of awesome stories. To compliment the chat I have included a tonne of info about him below. Enjoy this episode of the Noob Spearo Podcast:) About Dan Walsh Dan was captain of the "Sand Dollar" dive boat along with Bill Johnston when Terry Maas shot his big Bluefin at Guadalupe Island off Baja. Although it weighed in officially at 399.4 lb it was well over 400lb when he shot it, was on deck several days and got some weight loss due to dehydration. He also loves diving for Abalone and Lobster (his biggest was over 13lb!). In 1972 Dan became a Scuba Diving Instructor and 76 was the beginning of his boat Captaincy. Along the way he worked many well known dive shops including Scuba Sciences, San Diego Divers Supply, Aloha Dive Shop/Honolulu, Skin diving Hawaii, Kamehameha Divers/Kona. He also worked for AquaCraft/Bandito, Underwater Kinetics, Blue Water Wetsuits, Aleeda Wetsuits along with Captaining or crewing the Spirit of Adventure, Bottom Scratcher, Kona Princess, and Caribbean Explorer. You may have seen some of his film well known film and television work such as ESPN Diving with Christopher Reeve, PBS Nature/Antartica, and Shark Week. He is still involved producing shows for CBS, NBC sports, and others. Dan's Old guys mask clearing technique: "Most of the Bottom Scratchers used tobacco and smeared a cigarette inside and rinsed it out to keep the mask from fogging. I've never smoked and didn't think that method was for me. I just used spit." Spearfishing Tips: Get comfortable in the water Learn to breathe—buy Breathology, The Flow book for mental calmness, yoga breathing etc Don't rush things, take it easy as you learn and get more experienc. Get comfortable with your equipment + Get a really good mask! A Low volume mask that fits well. Best advice ever from Jack Prodonovich: you're supposed to be having fun, you don't need to try to prove anything. Just have fun. Travel tip: Have some sort of dive/travel/accident insurance. I have DAN Insurance which covers pretty much anything that I would need medically or emergency transit from an area. NSP:091 Rob Harrison how to grow a spearfishing club
Interview with Rob Harrison | Spearfishing FUNdamentals The Veterans Vault section in this interview will serve as a blueprint for you if you are interested in starting and growing a spearfishing club. Rob Harrison was one of the core members responsible for driving extreme growth in the Auckland Freediving Club membership. Since then he has started a spearfishing training group called Spearfishing FUNdamentals. In this interview he discusses some of the core things clubs need to do to lay a foundation for growth such as having a powerful vision, establishing a cultural/social code, encouraging action oriented discussion and more. As usual there are tips to improve your hunting and freediving techniques along with a few laughs. Enjoy:) Listen & subscribe to the Noob Spearo Podcast A NSP listener (Vaughan Podbielski) reached out to me with this recommendation. "I take part in a spearfishing dedicated training group (pool fitness / Co2 etc and lake depth training), group called Spearfishing FUNdamentals. It's run by a good bugger named Rob Harrison. Rob is also an AIDA Master Instructor. I've just done my AIDA2 with him. Rob also used to be president of the Auckland Freediving Club but now focuses on spearfishing freediving. (also underwater hockey player for NZ)." Here is what Rob had to say about the club. "... we now have a good crew and take turns at writing up the plan and programs. We have done 12 week focused training plans and have had members progress from 10m to 30m divers as a result. The idea for group came about in my last year at the Auckland Freediving Club." NSP:083 101 Sustainable Spearfishing with Andrew Lewin
Sustainable Spearfishing Interview with Andrew Lewin from Speak Up For The Blue Podcast This episode is a chat about the concept of sustainability and how we can each get involved in looking after the marine environment. Speak Up For The Blue Podcast Host and self proclaimed Oceanpreneur Andrew Lewin joins me in a wide ranging conversation about spearfishing, sustainability and being more aware of ocean conservation efforts in general. If you spend time in the ocean, there are a few interesting discussion points in this interview including fisheries management, parrot fish impacts on reefs, previous research on the Mississippi plume that Andrew was involved in, spearfishing groups that remove invasive species and cutting through the noise around the word 'sustainable'. I thoroughly enjoyed myself but please share your thoughts about the episode with me on the Noob Spearo Facebook Community Group here. Spearo's rescued: a couple of blokes in the UK became stuck on some rocks at Wembury point due to a big rushing tide. They were successfully rescued by the Plymouth Coastguard RNLI. This one highlights the trouble you can get yourself into with current and tide. If you are diving a new spot find out from the locals about current and check the tide times and the size of the tide. If you have a large volume of water moving between tides it means that you will have a lot of run which isnt much fun! Full article here This article is a look at how the abalone fishery closure has increased the number of guys learning spearfishing. He also highlights the present concerns about overabundance of purple urchins. Now Urchins or (Kina in New Zealand, Uni in Japan) are a delicacy but they require a gentle introduction as the taste is quite strong. So here are some basics for having a try yourself. Turn the urchin upside down and stick your knife in the hole and work it backwards and forwards using force rather than the blade (or you can break it open with the backend of you knife) Give it a rinse in salty water (on the day is best) and this will get rid of most of the crap) Get a teaspoon in there and scoop out the orange row and put in in a separate container. You can eat it exactly like that with no cooking or anything but its a string taste. Personally I like them most of the time although they do seem to change taste with water temp and i dont know what else. If you want to try it like that maybe you could have it with lemon and soy or even better keep it and try out this recipe 'CHILLED SEA URCHIN AND FARRO PASTA - its super simple. Pretty much just cook the pasta and then add the urchin, sauce and some herbs together in a bowl then cook and combine. It looks delicious and you are helping the environment over there by utilizing this resource and correcting an imbalance in the local ecosystem there in California. Sea Urchin in general are a highly sustainable seafood but ask local people in your area first if you are not sure. Recent research published in International Council for the Exploration of the Sea ICES MArine Science Journal covers an interesting topic.Spearfishing modulates flight initiation distance of fishes: the effects of protection, individual size, and bearing a speargun I think this article is interesting because it highlights a number of important factors. Spearfishing changes your body language. Holding a speargun changes the way fish perceive you. Is that because they can visually distinguish you have a weapon? Check out this article i will link up to think about it further. Also fish populations behavior changes when faced with regular spearfishing pressure. Now if you have been spearfishing one area for a long time and experience the summertime spearo phenomenon this is not news to you. This is why experienced guys head deeper and wider - they want to avoid spots that face regular spearo invasion. This also means that many fish populations can protect their numbers to an extent when faced with spearfishing pressure. However I read this article by Lebanese spearos who have smashed their local waters and simply changed tactics to capture more fish. In this article they directly talk about changing local spearos and other fisherman's attitudes towards fishing practices but its not easy as their livelihoods depend on it. I

NSP:077 HECS technology with Warren Bird
Interview with HECs Aquatic's Warren Bird A fast paced Q&A about the HECs Stealth System Wetsuit Technology The HECS technology came on our radar about 12 months ago and we've watched as its progressed. After 6 or more of our former guests all started wearing and benefiting from the HECS technology, we thought it was high time we reached out and got Warren on the show. We also reached out to the Noob Spearo Community on Facebook and got a hefty number of questions and so we ask them all in this chat. Standout for me in this episode were some of the other lesser known benefits of the suit such as greater warmth factor and durability. Have a listen for yourself and let us know your thoughts in the comment at noobspearo.com/hecs Hecs Episode Time Stamps News, iTunes Reviews, Kickstarter Project update, Purple Urchin Removal Event, Fishnerds Podcast Interview St Patricks Day lost spearos rescued by Clifden Lifeboat Purple Urchin Project with the Nor Cal Underwater Hunters Shreks Interview on Fish Nerds Podcast including his 5 Tips for new spear fishers Kickstarter Project 99 Tips to Get Better At Spearfishing 153% funded! Facebook Noob Spearo Spearfishing Community Group 10:00 Warren Bird Introduction Part 1 The HECS Technology What is the Hecs technology? Alex Hill "Can you get him to explain the hecs technology because I have heard a lot of people swear by it but I can't fathom how it works" What is the faraday cage? How does it work? Where did it come from? This question from Simon Trippe "What the concept was originally thought up for? Spearing fish or something else altogether? How have you tested and proven this technology? Riley Elliot HECs demonstration video HECs Aquatic Site - Justin Lee Vid Part 2 - The HECS wetsuit Warmth - seams, neoprene. Compression. Do they compress over time? Comfort - fit. Are the suits stiffer? What about range of motion? Range of motion. Spandex, carbon grid and integrating the technology discussion. Getting the suit on and off, is this a challenge? Durability: Padding. Is there a chest loading pad? If you rip a HECs wetsuit, how do you repair it? Is the tech compromised after tearing it? HECs suits 2 degrees Celcius warmer than comparable thickness suits. Function: I like the camo and camo seems very subjective. Does camo work? What are your thoughts? What has made you keep the technology in-house? Spearfishing world reception to HECs: Customer adoption curve. DISCUSSION Spearos are infamous for not being early adopters to technology. Reelguns, roller heads, carbon fiber fins copped a flogging when they arrived on the scene and even the single barbed flopper tip. For spearfishing, innovation adoption has a funny track record. It's a fact I wrote about a year ago for Adreno, here is the article about spearfishing innovation. Looking at the about product adoption curve and thinking about where the HECS technology is positioned, where would you say you are? DEVILS ADVOCATE Is there any evidence to prove that the HECS suit gives the spearfishing hunter an advantage? Is it true that HECS is not effective on all species? Spearfishing species don't all use electronic signals for analyzing prey and food? Gio Vitale "Yeah I'm curious how the massive electrical output from a shark shield supposedly doesn't effect fish but a tiny output from a human body supposedly does. Electricity diffuses quickly in water and fish only have a lateral line not ampullae of lorenzini… " Can't guys just become better hunters and not need HECS? Does the suit afford an unfair advantage to the diver? And will this mean more fish are taken every year? The crayfish/lobsters seem to be particularly influenced by the HECS technology particularly in the gloves. What is the wear like? How long do they last? Crayfish are tough buggers. HECS on Crayfish Video If you are a crap hunter will HECS help you to shoot fish? Which story or situation has been your proudest achievement with the HECS suit? More Listener questions Peter McDonald Says "It seems HECS has a strong focus on underwater photography/research potential, however equipment such as cameras emit their own electrical signals that sharks and other animals sense (and often investigate), have you considered attempting camera/equipment covers to prevent any further interference created by these devices? And if not feel free to send me a L/4 Bluewater 3mm for the idea..." Kabir Parker "Is there a new stealth screen coming out in the future. What's happening in the future for HECS?" Jon Stevens "David J Hochman and Nick Fazah had a discussion yesterday at the seminar about how HECS covers the electrical signals but not the heart rate and how fish read your heart rate. Perhaps a discussion on the podcast on what is more effective "covering electrical signals" or "keeping a low heart rate" and how fish read both." Cris walks us through techniques he has used to successfully hunt Bohar Snapper, Kuta (Spanish Mackerel), and Yellowfin Tuna. With several world records, countless spearfishing in exotic locations and his practical South African manner Cris is a real wealth of knowledge and this interview is brilliant. I have to admit it, I'm spewing I missed this chat with Cris. Due to time and work and pressures I couldn't make it so yesterday I had a few rum and cokes and listened to Turbo's first solo interview with Cris and I really enjoyed it. This is a lekker chat with a cool bloke! I sat there taking notes at times as Chris lays out some great insights and tips that he's learned from countless hours spearfishing, talking and watching legends spear and applying his own research and theories. NSP:070 Tim McDonald | Targeting Species Spearfishing
Interview with Tim McDonald Targeting species spearfishing with Tim McDonald, what a treat! We have a good Q&A session about finding and hunting Barramundi, Pearl Perch and the infamous Green Jobfish that challenge many spearos. There are some hairy stories in here about boating mishaps, sharks, big fish stories as well as some mindset discussion that might help you take your spearfishing to the next level. Listen into this episode with one of Australia's best spearfisherman, Tim McDonald. [FULL SHOWNOTES AVAILABLE AT NOOBSPEARO.COM] 'Fan-boy alert' - Tim's been one guy I've looked up to since I started spearfishing 6 years ago. He used to feature heavily in the now extinct Spearfishing Downunder Magazine DVD's, of which I spent countless hours watching. He's an interesting character that many of you may recognize from a highly popular YouTube video 'Spearfishing a 138kg Black Marlin' (vid at noobspearo.com). He gets taken for a ride with his reel gun and captures the entire experience on film. When he's not in the water, Tim serves as a Christian Pastor in the Western Suburbs of Brisbane where he also lives with his family. Funnily enough his son now has the spearfishing bug and has begun slowly usurping many of the Queensland state junior records. Tim is sponsored by Riffe, a trusted name in the spearfishing world for many years so we also speak a bit about some of his favorite equipment.
