Ep 114114. Re-release - How to feel recognised and rewarded at work
Re-releasing this fab episode to share with you the ways you can get back control over your career progression. How to feel recognised and rewarded at work... The importance of moving from invisible to VISIBLE 3 women's stories of making self promotion work for them Get back YOUR control over your career progression So how do you go from feeling invisible to getting the recognition you deserve? Today I want to talk to you about how to feel recognised and rewarded at work and I share the stories of 3 women that have done just that - it wasn't the easiest thing for them to do in terms of raising their profiles and being more visible and having to talk about themselves, but the results are exactly what they wanted. And here's the thing - we have to take a step back and see who can really impact and change your career progression - we can find other people to blame, managers, organisations and their culture or lack of support OR we can start to see what's within our control - how can we grab back those reins and start to shift things and get what we really want - listen in and let me know how you will make things happen for yourself…. "So what's it going to be….waiting around and hoping and praying that this will start happening or get hold of the reins yourself?" Gemma Stow "Whether you want that new opportunity, more money or to make a greater impact - it's probably all three, then stop telling yourself that you have no control over whether that happens or not." Ep 113113. How to find clarity and confidence when feeling stuck
How to find clarity and confidence when feeling stuck We are back! And it feels good - let me know how happy you are that we are back? Takeaways Recognising that feeling of being 'stuck' or overwhelmed The impact of stress on the body The connection between the physical and mental wellbeing The importance of stillness and self awareness to ditch the feelings of comparison Bringing coaching and yoga together for the clarity and comfortable confidence Our full day event in York 30th September 2022! And, I have your back for the summer holidays and have brought back some of your favourite episodes and re released them so you can get that inspiration to keep being visible in ways that suit you. Thanks for the ongoing support while I have been away: Thank you to Sarah who messaged me totally out of the blue and said; "Hi Gemma. I hope you don't mind me messaging but just wanted to reach out and say thanks. I have an interview Thursday for a Head of Business Development at work, I'm so ready for the promotion and although I have been prepping all weekend I just needed a different perspective and I came across your podcast re interviews. It was so very helpful, it helped me to feel confident, and remind me that I can do this and I can talk about myself which I find hard! So thank you for your inspiring podcast I think the work you do is amazing and ill certainly be mentioning you to other women at work! Xx" And Amy who said; "Honestly I have to thank you! I know you will say I did the work but I had 3 interviews last week and got 3 offers this week. Before the interviews I listened to some of your podcasts and although lots of it is things I already knew, listening to them before enabled me to become more self aware in the moment and I honestly attribute this to my successes so ultimately you inadvertently facilitated my success So Thank you xx" That particular episode which is number 56 and is nearly two years old just goes to show how important this podcast really is to you listeners and the impact it can have. And this is one of the many reasons I have to get this show back on the road. Today I have a super special guest on the show to talk about all things clarity. Clarity of thought around big or small things in our lives can be the game changer we all need. Yet life always seems so busy to even get a moment to think about the bigger questions - such as what do I want for my career ? Or do I need something different now? A new challenge perhaps? Or want time to reassess what matters most? You might be listening thinking yes, getting some headspace and time to find that clarity sounds very appealing but where to start with it when life doesn't always help you out with that. What can you do for yourself? Which is why I have the amazing Louise Brogan-Hewitt on the show from Louise yoga to delve into the things we can do for ourselves to get our thoughts in order. Take a listen to this fabulous chat and get in touch to tell us what you think. "What's stopping people is that they are worried about what everyone else thinks, you are comparing yourself all the time and I really want our event to move away from that, to leave women feeling that inner confidence, inner strength and grounded to make a different decision to when they walked through the door" Gemma "Empowered, grounded and connected with themselves… and when you are making decisions from overwhelm then you are thinking about everyone else and what will they think, will they like it or what will they say" Louise ** If you want more info on the York event please do reach out to us for more information [email protected] or [email protected] ** and check out the incredible venue here > https://www.grayscourtyork.com/ Resources The previous episode Ep56 I mention about interviews > https://gemmastow.libsyn.com/how-can-i-make-the-most-out-of-interviews The previous episode Ep78 with my amazing sisters Louise and Ailsa > https://gemmastow.libsyn.com/78-how-self-care-can-increase-your-confidence Don't forget you can get my monthly email "Visibility Matters" that shares the latest around the gender pay gap, visibility, allyship, self promotion and good practice that is happening all over the place that support more women to step up and companies to recognise the value they bring. Ep 95112. How companies need to focus on retaining their female talent - Re-release
Re-release. How companies need to focus on retaining their female talent What do women really want Real talk from women who have left companies The 8P's of career progression Importance of recognising Value, Culture and Hierarchies Today I want to share a previous episode with you about the reasons why companies are losing some of their best talent - it frustrates me to see companies who feel like they are doing their best yet see their female employees move on to new roles and job and even the competition. For years people assume women leave jobs for family reasons when this couldn't be further from the truth. From my years of experience of working with women on their confidence and career progression it is clear that they are moving on because they don't feel valued and are frustrated at work... It's not all about pay and promotions. There is way more to it than that and I want start showcasing that so we can start make real and long lasting change and make sure incredible female talent who are dedicated and committed, are actually seen by their companies and that they in turn can make sure they value them enough for them to stay and be invested in the organisation they work for. _________________________ GET INVOLVED IN THE CAREER PROGRESSION SURVEY HERE > https://bit.ly/CareerProgression-Survey2021 - thank you :) _________________________ Don't forget you can get my monthly NEWSLETTER that shares the latest around the gender pay gap, book recommendations and good practices that are happening all over the place that support more women to step up and be recognised for the value they bring. Ep 108108. How else can we make sure women are recognised
How else can we make sure women are recognised Today we are sharing a previous episode from the end of last year 2020 which had a big impact because it focuses on what else there is to do when it comes to being more visible. Sometimes when you feel like you are doing ALL the things and nothing is changing in terms of your career progression opportunities it can be frustrating to say the least and can lead to resentment. I can see this now especially after the pandemic and people starting to realise what matters most to them and demanding more flexibility at work - there is talk of the 'great resignation' and this is happening as more companies are losing their best people when they don't need to. In this previous episode I go through a whole load of questions that companies can use to assess where their employees are at right now and what they can do to help them be more visible and get the opportunities they want. If you want to assess your own visibility then grab the 2021 quiz to see what you score and identify what more you can do for yourself! Ep 107107. How to stop that fear of success sneaking in
How to stop that fear of success sneaking in Today we are revisiting a previous quick win episode where we look at breaking down the habits that keep our fears strong - with particular attention to the fear of success which we all should know by now is a very real thing. It's often one of those fears that is not talked about as much yet can be a big barrier for so many women with their career progression and saying yes to new opportunities. We convince ourselves of all sorts of reasons why we can't do something even though we know 100% we are absolutely capable. So listen in and make sure that when you are thinking about the success you can have and your potential, you are not worrying about what happens when you achieve that success. And I also wanted to take this opportunity to mention that this weekend I will be running the Manchester Marathon which has been on my go to do in my lifetime list and I can't believe it is here. And with all the press coverage and talk about how women are blamed as victims recently then I had to mention the amazing charity I am running for which is Women's Aid and all the incredible work they do to keep women and children safe from violence and abuse. Enough is enough and if you are a supporter of this too then please head over to my Justgiving page and support both Women's Aid and me to make it to the finish line whilst raising important funds for this amazing charity. And watch this space as I will be giving you the lowdown on how the marathon goes - after all it's a big challenge that requires a lot of digging deep and self belief which is exactly what we also need in terms of owning our expertise! Enjoy today's quick win episode and let me know when it inspires you to take action! ...................................... Ep 106106. How to really own your strengths and celebrate them
How to really own your strengths and celebrate them Importance of identifying your own characteristics and strengths Creating your big deal list How to use stories to your advantage. Today we are going to be revisiting a quick win episode from earlier in the year all about strengths - because let's face it we don't celebrate our strengths enough do we. And the more workshops and trainings a I do with women in all areas and all industries one thing remains the same and that is that we have this tendency to focus on the negatives and seem to forgot all about the awesome things we have done and achieved and don't spend any time talking about the impact and results we create either. These are the reasons behind why we do the work we do in the first place and yet we fail to recognise that for ourselves and then wonder why others don't recognise it either - so keep listening and hear more about the importance of identifying your own characteristics, creating your big deal list and how to use stories to your advantage. 105. How to feel comfortable playing the visibility game
How to feel comfortable playing the visibility game. What is this game we think we have to play Real life scenarios of women playing the game How you can find YOUR OWN way of being visible Today we are considering whether being more visible means you have to play the game. It is an interesting one and comes up a lot with the women I work with - in fact as they don't want to play that game they end up doing nothing at all and we don't want that do we….listen in to hear what you can do instead. ...................................... Ep 104104. How do you stop putting everyone else before yourself and your career?
How do you stop putting everyone else before yourself and your career? You are not alone - so many women put others feelings before their own careers It's not selfish to go for what you really want 5 things to think about that will help you shift your thoughts and start putting you first Today's quick win episode and we will be addressing the issue that comes up when you hold yourself back because you are worried about stepping on others toes. This happens a lot and not just when it comes to your colleagues but also with managers and senior staff. We tell ourselves that we can't speak up or go for certain opportunities because we may upset others and worry about the consequences or what they will think about us and our ambitions. The thing is, if you have experienced this type of sabotage then you are not alone but there are ways to move past it. So in this episode we go through 5 ways you can start to think differently about your own career progression and stop putting everyone else before yourself. Ep 103103. How to be more visible when starting from scratch
How to be more visible when starting from scratch. Remember you've done more than you think Stay in your own lane - stop comparing yourself! Stay focused on one area of visibility and the others will fall into place One of the hardest parts to this visibility game that I talk about is actually starting from what you think is nothing. If you are telling yourself that you have never done any visibility work then let me stop you there. You have. Visibility and self promotion comes in many different forms and its about finding what works for you and gets you results and doing more of that - you don't have to be like everyone else. So if you feel like you are at the beginning of this journey where you are ready to step it up a gear and raise your profile and showcase your talent so you can get new opportunities in your career then the first thing you should def check out is the quiz I have devised. It walks you through a number of questions and you can then analyse the type of visibility you are already doing and it will also show you any gaps or give you ideas that you might not yet have thought about doing but would really suit your style. The link to this quiz is in the show notes at https://bit.ly/visibility-takethetest or listen in to today's show as we go through it together. -------------------------------------- Don't forget you can get my monthly NEWSLETTER that shares the latest around the gender pay gap, visibility strategies good practices that are happening all over the place that support more women to step up and be recognised for the value they bring. Ep 102102. How to get back into the visibility game after some time out
How to get back into the visibility game after some time out Quick Win Episode! "The antidote to this overthinking is of course taking action and we know that by taking action, confidence grows and results happen!" As we hit September 2021 it would be a great idea to think about how you can get back into the swing of things when it comes to your visibility especially if you have taken some time out. I am hoping that you have managed to have some time away from work over the summer months as you know I always bang on about how important it is - but it can equally be tricky to get back into the swing of things and catch up on all the emails that have landed in your inbox never mind thinking about your own visibility and what you want. So I thought a short and to the point quick win episode to get you back into the swing of things would help - in this episode I share 3 things you can start to do to get back into it all without feeling overwhelmed…. So let me know what you think - have you been having a break from being visible? Does it feel daunting to get back into it or are you looking forward to it? Maybe the break has given you time to reflect and realise what you really want and now it's all about making those plans and goals become a reality. _________________________________ Don't forget you can get my monthly NEWSLETTER that shares the latest around the gender pay gap, career progression and good practices that are happening all over the place that support more women to step up and be recognised for the value they bring. How to nail your introduction so people remember you and help you out. How to intro yourself without using your title Why talking about what you want (not only what you do is important) Today I wanted to get back to basics when it comes to those uncomfortable introductions. I can still remember at events or training when the trainer goes around the room and asks people to introduce themselves or plays some kind of cringeworthy ice breaker and I could literally feel that dread feeling wash over me and all I wanted to do was make a run for it! I will be totally honest, my personality hasn't changed and these kind of things still make my eyes roll. Introductions are so important and you can use them to get what you want too! So how do you find the way that will work for you? Ep 9292. How to feel recognised and rewarded at work
How to feel recognised and rewarded at work... "So what's it going to be….waiting around and hoping and praying that this will start happening or get hold of the reins yourself?" Gemma Stow "Whether you want that new opportunity, more money or to make a greater impact - it's probably all three, then stop telling yourself that you have no control over whether that happens or not." Ep 8989. How to stop standing on the sidelines and get networking on LinkedIn
How to stop standing on the sidelines and get networking on LinkedIn Quick win episode: 3 quick things you can do to up your LinkedIn game. Take the test - figure out where you are doing well or where you have gaps in terms of raising your profile I have been talking to a lot of people recently about LinkedIn the thing I have noticed is that they have dipped their big toe into LinkedIn - they have set up their profile and possibly added a photo of themselves. But what I am hearing is that they say they are on LinkedIn and using it to raise their profile but in all honesty what they really mean is that they are on the platform but they aren't really ON it. Maybe this is sounding familiar? "LinkedIn is like one big networking event" - Gemma "You can't be a secret and a success - you can't raise your visibility game without being visible and you cant see what all those amazing opportunities are if you are not out there and putting yourself forward for them" - Gemma How good is your visibility and personal branding - take the test? Ep 8888. How opening the door helps ALL women be seen and heard
How opening the door helps ALL women be seen and heard The importance of gatekeepers to open doors Why mentoring matters and how reverse mentoring is powerful Black women and visibility in the workplace Systemic inequalities and bias Allies and the skills that are really needed Today on the podcast we have an inspiring woman who is passionate about breaking down those inequalities that women of colour, black women and those from ethnic minorities face. Lucy Ndlovu is also an advocate for mentoring and believes that it is a game changer. We talk about the impact of role models and how often as a black woman comes a huge responsibility and the power of reverse mentoring - yes that means a CEO or director being mentored by someone possibly less senior so they can understand their lived experiences which would only serve to benefit them as individuals and allies but also the company as a whole. Lucy and I also share the impact of gatekeepers and how one man in New York changed Lucy's life forever when he literally opened the door for her. The story gave me goosebumps. Ep 8787. The power of being true to who you really are
The power of being true to who you really are "Most people regret the things they don't do, not the things they do" Katie Neeves I want you to think for a moment about those feelings that come up when you are doing something that really pushes you out of your comfort zone, you know those worries about what others will think about you should you dare to speak up or share something publicly - which makes you feel incredibly vulnerable? Maybe you have had those feelings bit held back, maybe you have jumped in the deep end well today we have an awesome woman on the show who knew that the only way to her being truly happy and listening to her inner truth was to take a leap of faith and how it has paid off and she has gone on to help and impact on so many more people. Katie Neeves is a woman on a mission - but not just any woman and not just any mission! She lived for 48 years as a man while struggling with her gender and hiding her big secret to the World. She was thrown into turmoil when her gender dysphoria increased dramatically, causing her to go on a voyage of discovery before finally admitting to herself that she is a transgender woman and that she needed to change her body. She then came out very publicly via a coming-out video which she posted on her social media and sent to all the clients of her photography and video business, risking her livelihood and reputation in the process. Listen in to hear her how this panned out and how she hit the live button on that original video. Katie has since formed Cool2BTrans to support and inspire other trans people and also to educate everyone else on trans issues by showing them that trans people are just ordinary people who want to be happy - just like everyone else. She helps organisations with diversity and inclusion by providing trans awareness training in an entertaining way by using humour to break down barriers. Recent participants of Katie's sessions said it was "a masterclass in storytelling!" and "the most interesting webinar so far and definitely the funniest". So stay tuned and you'll understand why as she has me laughing throughout. It's a brilliant and inspiring episode today - get in touch and let me me know how you feel inspired? Ep 8686. How to push past barriers being a woman in a man's world
How to push past barriers being a woman in a man's world Trust Yourself Use your 'labels' to your advantage Speak up Talk from a point of evidence Today we are chatting to a Chartered Construction Manager who has 35 years construction experience. They are a qualified Building Surveyor who graduated with a Degree in Building Surveying from Sheffield nearly 30 years ago, and can also add Asbestos Surveyor and Access Auditor to their list of qualifications. Elaine Armitage is proud to say she was Chair of the Chartered Institute of Building for Leeds and West Yorkshire and her passion for the construction industry is clear when you hear her talk. I wanted to check out her experiences of working in a male dominated environment and we chat about the barriers that some women can face and what they can do about it - there is a strong message of the importance of authenticity and using the strengths and traits that you already have rather than feeling like you have to be someone you are not. Elaine supports individuals who want to make a career in construction, she says "seeing an apprentice or young professional reach the goal gives me the same sense of pride as watching my own children develop and grow. I don't have all the answers but am prepared to give my time to support others where I can" - stay tuned to listen to an incredible woman who really does ooze down to earth 'yorkshireness' and shares some great tips on how to push past those barriers that might be in your way whether self imposed or in your industry. Ep 8585. How to get noticed when your work is behind the scenes
How to get noticed when your work is behind the scenes Today we are chatting about roles that can sometimes go unnoticed like when you work hard mostly behind the scenes yet the value you provide keeps everything ticking over. We have the amazing Nicky Christmas on the show who launched Practically Perfect PA back in October 2011, which has grown to become the go-to resource for Personal Assistants, Executive Assistants, Office Managers and Administrative Professionals at all levels of business seeking support. The majority of individuals who are in these roles are not always keen on being the centre of attention and much prefer to be the sidekick however this can mean that their value is not often seen so today we are chatting about the things you can do to communicate that value and do that in your own way - you don't need to be shouting the loudest or waving your jazz hands but you can subtly keep showcasing your work to make sure that you are not forgotten. Ep 8383. Male allyship is all about action and the impact you can have for others
Male allyship is all about action and the impact you can have for others. Today as part of the focus on the importance of male allyship I have a great conversation with a man who is so passionate in developing leaders of the future and all employees reaching their potential and not letting processes or a lack of confidence get in the way of them achieving their goals. Des Johnson, is Organisational Development Service Manager at Wakefield & District Housing and his key role is developing employees to be effective in their current roles and meet their future aspirations. He wants to encourage diverse leadership, particularly women reaching their potential. He firmly believes that the so-called 'soft skills' are business critical and he feels fortunate that WDH promotes and supports leadership development and he gets to work with a talented team that specialise in facilitating these skills. My company has been working in partnership with WDH and Des and I am personally grateful for the opportunities to work with incredible individuals on their career progression, confidence and self promotion strategies. Women on the group coaching programme I facilitated have really gone from strength to strength and they are increasing their own visibility supporting a new wave of recognition, new organisational changes and exciting times indeed. Listen to us chatting about male allyship, how companies and individuals can do more and how different styles of allyship are required at all levels. How it is a proactive and doesn't just come and go because it's way more than a tick box exercise. Ep 8282. Asking and listening are the first steps in being a better ally
Asking and listening are the first steps in being a better ally. Another amazing conversation about the importance of male allyship and what first steps men can take to start being a bigger support to female colleagues and every woman in their lives. Today we have special guest Paul Porter as someone raised with 5 Glaswegian Aunties, Paul has always been surrounded by kick ass women. Listen in to hear how thats not changed in fact he is surrounded by even more strong women not only with his family but in the career groups he helps build and manage. Paul believes that male allyship is crucial and hopes that more men will step up and support women. It is about them standing by women, being more than performative allies and supporting them everyday. We chat about what those first steps can look like and let's be honest it's much easier than you think when you start to listen. In 2008 he quit his job in Hospitality and set up Porter HR - People called him crazy - especially as the financial crash had just started. What a journey it's been, working with SME founders and owners. Following a LinkedIn Local in Manchester, over 4 years ago, Paul joined The Career Mum group. He didn't realise at the time what was ahead of him, but it opened up so many opportunities to support women along the way. The group has nearly 6000 global members and have done everything from mentoring to live take over week. Paul is a big believer in" if you can see it you can be it" – No more hiding!! Last year, Paul was part of the team that co-created and delivered She Has No Limits Virtual event, He knew that something had to be done to support women whose life & careers had been impacted by the pandemic overnight. With support from Jodie Hill, Paul launched tHRive Club to support HR, People Leaders and Business in 2020 – we are now 700 strong and approaching their first birthday. Paul believes that male allyship is crucial and hopes that more men will step up and support women. It is about them standing by women, being more than performative allies and supporting them everyday. After 12 years growing the business, I also took the step to join a long-term client as their Head of People. It was a big change to make, however, Paul has left Porter HR in good hands of his wife Kathryn, who transitioned out of a global role to take over the business. Connect with Paul below. Ep 8181. How male allies can support women's career progression
How male allies can support women's career progression What allyship is and what it isn't How we can make it work better The importance of active listening What are those first steps to take for male allies in the workplace Today we are talking to a man who's role is to make sure that diversity and inclusion are included on every agenda within his organisation. Jonathan Stephen studied at the University of Huddersfield, graduating with a BSc Hons Psychology in 2016. Since then, he was elected as Education Officer and President of Huddersfield Students' Union (HSU) & is currently Diversity & Inclusion Officer at KNH and Kirklees Council. I am thrilled that he is on the show talking to me about all things male allyship, when it works and when it doesn't, and what we can do about it, but most importantly why we ALL need to listen to each other's lived experiences there's no better training for allyship than that. "We were the first group in the UN headquarters that our presentation was on menstruation and period poverty and we all wore lipstick to present" - Jonathan "There's nothing wrong with going 'I don't know can I find out more" - Jonathan "I am an ally to everyone who can be and shouldn't be 'othered' but I would never say I am perfect at that...allyship is something that is very active and needs revisiting and consent to me is a big part of that" - Jonathan Don't forget you can get my monthly NEWSLETTER that shares the latest around the gender pay gap, book recommendations and good practices that are happening all over the place that support more women to step up and be recognised for the value they bring. Ep 8080. How to identify and really own your strengths
How to identify and really own your strengths Quick Win! I promised a quick win episode today on the back of the results I found when working with a lot of women in a short space of time through all the IWD training workshops. The thing that was obvious and a lot of women feedback to me either in the groups or privately was not being clear on their strengths. I find this a lot - as women we often forget what has led us to where we are today. All the life and work experiences, the good the bad and the ugly - all of them have made you who you are. Yet when asked what strengths you have - you have to stop and think about it for too long. This is your power. This is what makes you who you are and this is definitely the thing that is going to stand you apart and give the edge when that next opportunity comes along at work that may just be the gamechanger for your career. Try the steps I share in this quick episode and then go try them out! I want to hear from you today - yes today drop me a message on LinkedIn, instagram @nomorehidingpodcast or even facebook if you must or even better email me [email protected] and let me know that you are going to do this and even better you are going to use this to play bigger. Let me know today. Do it, take action and get a quick win! It really does give you a confidence boost and you never know where it will lead. Ep 7979. Why 'choose to challenge' is your best strategy for visibility
Why 'choose to challenge' is your best strategy for visibility Recap on my IWD sessions and the impact 5 steps to choose to challenge yourself and others Feel sad then get mad at what's going on in the world for ALL women Are you using your strengths to your advantage Importance of male allyship Today I am wrapping up what has been an incredible month but at the same time an emotional rollercoaster for women. We started off strong with IWD and then came so much frustration, pain and anger. It's important to acknowledge what is going on around us and how it makes us feel - but as mum reminds me 'be sad but then get mad' because this is when we can see the greatest action that makes change happen - things shouldn't have to go horribly wrong for change but when it does at least we can make some sense out of it. This is Why 'choose to challenge' is your best strategy for visibility and today I share 5 ways you can start to do this. It's about challenging not only those around you but also yourself. I also promised I would give the gos on how my IWD workshops and sessions have gone so tune in and if you are listening and attended any of the sessions then drop me a message and let me know the impact it has had for you. "Throughout all the work I wanted women to know that this is not about fixing them. They are not broken, the system is. We all have our individual barriers that we need to figure out and then start to do something about it - we can break down our own barriers to being more visible and we can be part of something bigger that will break down those in the system." (Gemma Stow) "The one thing that did shine through was women's lack of clarity when it comes to owning our strengths. Knowing what they are and how to use them to your advantage." How self care can increase your confidence Takeaways: Busting self care myths Why you should bother How self care links to your self belief and confidence How foundation, fuel and focus = fulfilment "Self care can mean different things to different people - you don't have to bake banana bread or have a bubble bath" (Ailsa) "And that's quite powerful. You are making decisions about what's good for you and that's self care in itself...No excuses. No justifications. I just don't want to do that." (Louise) Today you are in for a real treat - as we continue celebrating International Women's Day for the whole month I have some incredible women on the show You may think I am a little biased but they are awesome human beings and passionate about their work as you will hear. If you are ready to start believing in yourself by putting first and figure out what actually makes YOU feel good and ready to ditch the shit that quite frankly does not light you up anymore and want to know where to start then stick around. Today we have my two amazing sisters on the show. Louise Brogan-Hewitt is a Yoga teacher and business owner. Her passion is creating a welcoming space for people to explore finding ease and freedom in their body and mind, where perhaps they once felt stuck. She wholeheartedly believes yoga is for everybody. Currently works in delivering the NHS national diabetes prevention program which focuses on diet and lifestyle changes In between the giggles there is an important message about taking your well being seriously and that mindset, movement and nutrition are the 3 key pieces of the puzzle. And we may have agreed to do an online retreat together whilst chatting on this episode - I want to hear your thoughts on that and whether it would be something that you could be interested in- watch this space. Listen in to me and my sisters trying to stay professional whilst exploring what it means to really value yourself. Email me [email protected] with the subject line - I'm interested :) 'Work martyrs who sell their soul and say they don't have enough time to look after themselves' - Ailsa 'I've managed to do something I never thought I could do and that now opens up the door of opportunities' - Gemma 'It's not necessarily in terms of what we do for self care, it's the practice of doing it that's important' - Ailsa 'Confidence grows when you put yourself first' - Gemma 'If we can't give time to ourselves then what?' - Louise 'Are we going to sit at our desks all day, squeeze in as much as we can and not sleep well and then it s a cycle that repeats itself' - Louise 'Its the feeling that it creates in us and if its something we can turn into a habit or do daily even better' - Louise 'If I am saying I don't have the time to do something then I am really saying I don't want to do it and need to be honest with myself' - Gemma Don't forget you can get my monthly NEWSLETTER that shares the latest around the gender pay gap, book recommendations and good practices that are happening all over the place that support more women to step up and be recognised for the value they bring. Ep 7373. How better feedback can make all the difference
How better feedback can make all the difference I want to talk about the importance of feedback. This is the thing with feedback - if done well it can be a great tool to support growth - if done badly it can really hold women back. I talk about both of these things today and also not forgetting that feedback shouldn't be the only thing we rely on to grow and move forward and I will share some ways you can do this for yourself too! Have you ever been told "you are great at your job - keep doing what you are doing" from a line manager or someone more senior to you. And you were expecting something a little more specific, something that you could sink your teeth into and something that well would actually help you and your career progression. Research including that from the HBR (Harvard business review) has found that vague feedback is actually holding women back and they are at a significant disadvantage when it comes to promotion and we need more women at those decision making tables. Ep 7272. Why feedback is important for women's confidence
Why feedback is important for women's confidence Barriers facing women at work Why feedback is important Celebrate the achievements The importance of peer recognition Internal Women's Networks (ERGs) Today we are talking about the barriers that women often face when it comes to their career progression and what simple steps can be taken to to support them especially associated with remote working and the impact that this can have on women's visibility and career progression. Networking in the corridors of after face to face meetings isn't a possibility right now and we have to think differently to make it work for everyone. We get to hear insights from the amazing Michelle Jackson who is EDI Adviser at Shaw Trust. She creates strategies, a range of activities and ways of working that remove barriers faced by groups who are underrepresented in more senior roles in the workplace and create a culture where people feel confident to take forward opportunities. Shaw Trust has got some exciting ideas lined up and I know Michelle and I could talk about this all day! Take a listen. Ep 7171. How to Break Your Fear of Success
How to Break Your Fear of Success Quick Win Episode! How to recognise you have a real fear of success and what you can start to do about it! Diving straight into this quick win episode where I want to follow on from last week where we talked about the impact that women can have when they speak up and how that impact can actually be causing a fear of success for you that's stopping you from moving forward. The best way to break the fear is to break the habits that keep it strong. We all have habits or little rituals that we do in order to protect ourselves from things that we don't want or that scare us and fill us with fear. This fear can feel very real and although some people laugh it off it can actually be something that is holding you back from putting yourself forward for opportunities where you can really excel, shine and show everyone who you really are and what you are truly capable of. Listen in and try the steps I share to get those quick wins. Ep 7070. What happens when women ask for what they want and they get it
What happens when women ask for what they want and they get it In today's episode we are focusing more on what can actually happen when women start speaking up and promoting themselves. I also want to chat about one of the biggest fears that women can have and that they don't often realise they have which is the fear of success. Sounds counterintuitive right? But it is a very real fear for some and can get in the way of actually getting the success and opportunities you deserve. "Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women." (Maya Angelou) "When we can recognise things stopping us from speaking up there can be no stopping us" (Gemma Stow) I also share some of the things that can come about when you stars to promote yourself and what you stand for in different ways - here's a few I have seen happen first hand - listen in to hear more. Project opportunities at work Speaking gigs inside and outside of work Invitations to conferences and events Winning industry awards Speaking opportunities to share your experiences to inspire others Being recognise a the expert in your field Don't forget you can get my monthly NEWSLETTER that shares the latest around the gender pay gap, book recommendations and good practices that are happening all over the place that support more women to step up and be recognised for the value they bring. Ep 6868. How to encourage your women to speak up for what they need
How to encourage your women to speak up for what they need Today I am talking about how employers and line managers can encourage their employees to speak up for what they want. I have rerecorded this intro after the current announcement here in the UK that we are in yet another lockdown. Although you know it is coming and is so much needed to fight the spread of Covid19 it is still always a shock to the system when the reality sets in. This will yet again impact many people in many different ways and my thoughts are with those that have lost or let's face it lose loved ones in the near future. It is also a very isolating time for so many and even us introverts can get a little stir crazy from no social interaction. So reach out to those you know need it and perhaps those you think don't - let's stay stronger together. And a shout out to all the parents who are now contemplating what the next weeks will look like trying to juggle everything. When children are learning from home instead of school, it can often fall to the mother to do the work whilst also trying to do her own work and research has already shown the impact that this is having on their own career progression not to mention mental health. Not an easy task and I speak from experience. It's therefore even more paramount that women get comfortable with speaking up and asking for what they want. I share some tips for individuals to do just that in next week's episode on the importance of self advocacy. So listen in to today's episode and learn how to encourage women to speak up and understand some of the reasons they hold back. Thank you for tuning in and Stay safe and remember We can only do the best we can. So less judgement and more kindness and we will get through this together - again. So how can you encourage women to speak up? Well I think it is important to first discuss WHY women avoid speaking up in the first place. Listen to the 5 reasons that will help you understand what's holding them back and then what you can do about it. How to be ready for success in the new year It is 2021! Happy New Year and let's hope that this year is better than the turbulent 2020. All the uncertainty and unknown. I am excited for the new year and all that it brings and I am all about supporting women to set themselves up for success when it comes to owning their expertise and their career progression. In this episode I will get you thinking about what you really want and reviewing what has gone before so that you can build a fantastic plan for 2021 that will create everything you want for you and your team. Listen in to the questions I ask that will get those cogs turning ready to hit the ground running ….here is a taster What things happened that you planned? Were there things you were still waiting to happen? Were you waiting to be offered more experience, or to speak up in that meeting or to be invited to present at that conference. What made you feel like you were missed off the radar? What opportunities did you think were coming your way but maybe didn't? - Who are you blaming and can you start to look at approaching it differently to make it happen in 2021? As women we definitely don't do this enough. And for some women I work with they find it so difficult to find a win every week. Why is this?' - Gemma 'Well it's mainly because we take ourselves for granted. Those things we achieve and get done day in day out we start to become complacent with. No longer thinking they are anything important or worth valuing and then over time this feeling becomes the norm and no longer do we see the celebration in the things we achieve. It's like the small wins don't matter and therefore we don't matter.'' - Gemma What is your company doing to celebrate International Women's day in March 2021? Ep 6565. There is always more to do when it comes to being seen
There is always more to do when it comes to being seen. #Takeaways When women think they have done all they can to be seen and heard there's always more to do Finding and trying different strategies and techniques really can make a difference to being comfortable with self promotion Self Advocacy is a crucial part of Self Promotion Getting clear on what women really want from their career is key for knowing the purpose of visibility and raising profiles The internal work and personal development plays a significant part in talent development Try the checklist to see what else can be done in raising visibility and owning expertise Today we are talking about what happens when women think they have done all they can when it comes to securing future promotions and opportunities. It can really disheartening if women feel they have done ALL the things in terms of raising their profile and being more visible only to find that they still miss out on opportunities. In this episode, I share a quick checklist to make sure that women have a platform to access opportunities and that they are really doing all they can and stacking the odds in their favour when it comes to their career progression. Ep 6464. Why being vulnerable is absolutely a strength
Why being vulnerable is absolutely a strength #Takeaways The power of being an authentic role model that inspires Companies can do more to create a safe space for women from all levels to share stories and experiences Leaders hold back from always sharing because they feel like they need to protect others Peer groups and women's networks are key to shifting the company culture. Women can have it all - when they figure out what their all is Surround yourself with different people so you can open your mind And today we have the super inspiring Zandra Moore on the show. Zandra is CEO and Co-Founder of Panintelligence Data Analytics Software Business in Leeds and Founder of LeanIn Leeds 800+ women's leadership network, mum to 2 and football coach to twenty, 15 year old girls. When you meet Zandra you cannot help but be inspired by her. And that's exactly how I felt a number of years ago. I am really excited to have her on the show as she doesn't hold back. She is open and willing to talk about things that sometimes female leaders don't often talk about. Women often have to work so hard in their careers that being vulnerable when you are in a senior positions can be difficult. Although vulnerability is absolutely a strength it's not always viewed that way by others. So many women are inspired by those around them but have often told me that they can't ever reach those heights. Seeing successful career women as 'superwomen' or having to make huge sacrifices in their lives to get to where they want to be. Isn't it time we start breaking down these barriers to show what the reality is and that if women want it all they have to figure out what their 'all' looks like and that anything is possible for them. " It's had it's hurdles, of course it has it's never been plain sailing, but when I look back at why I have been able to persist and overcome those hurdles, I had the benefit of somebody from a very young age that made me believe that anything was possible" - Zandra " It's addictive...the more you do for others the more these things walk towards you..givers gain " - Zandra "You don't have to be an expert in something to be able to add value or change things or inspire others" - Zandra "I want women to hear that message that you don't have to know everything to get ahead" - Gemma "People just present the good, they never present the bad. It's never easy in any role whatever level you are at and it doesn't change whether you are a graduate or a CEO" - Zandra "There's such power in the 'me too' element of safe spaces and that association with each other" - Gemma #Resources Get my NEWSLETTER that shares the latest around the gender pay gap, book recommendations and good practices that are happening all over the place that support more women to step up and be recognised for the value they bring. Ep 6363. Who is responsible for women's career progression?
Who is responsible for women's career progression? #Takeaways That there is a dual responsibility between companies and individuals Companies need to create a culture that embraces progression and promotion Individual women need to own their expertise and not be afraid to talk about it Self promotion is crucial to being recognised and rewarded at work Communication is key - talk about career plans more than once per year Offer networking opportunities in working hours Recognise that part time workers are also committed and ambitious Today I want to open up the conversation around who is ultimately responsible for women's career progression. It really is crucial to get to the bottom of this because I was recently told that women shouldn't have to use self promotion to get ahead. This proved to be an interesting conversation especially as the woman was at one of my talks about the importance of self promotion. And you know what, I agreed with her point of view, however it also reinforced some of the ideas I have when it comes to women raising their profile and being able to own their expertise as well as how companies can do more, to support women to do more too. Listen in and hear tips for both companies and women to take their share of this responsibility so we can start moving the needle on having more gender parity in the workplace. I do love connecting with companies and individuals who are also passionate about driving female leadership and closing the gap, so if that sounds like you - and I pretty sure it will be as you are here listening to this show - then make sure you are also receiving my newsletter that shares the latest around the gender pay gap, book recommendations and good practices that are happening all over the place that support more women to step up and be recognised for the value they bring. Get yours by clicking >> https://www.gemmastow.com/newsletter "Be proactive in identifying those women who have high potential including those that work part time hours - this is not a sign of lack of ambition or commitment - far from it" - Gemma "Communication from both sides. Companies need to provide a safe space for women to feel they can be honest and open up about what they want. To see this vulnerability as strength not weakness and for companies to ask more questions, and not only do this once per year." - Gemma "And when it doesn't happen it results in women staying in roles that they are often overqualified for which in turn can have a negative impact of lack of motivation, boredom and feeling undervalued. Companies can then lose great staff that they should be holding onto and nurturing." - Gemma "Women don't have to change who they are, all they have to do is show others who they are. And this doesn't have to be awkward and uncomfortable. It can be powerful and fun.
