The HALO Act is a legislative bill aimed at creating a buffer zone for first responders to be able to conduct their job responsibilities without interference from bystanders. While police advocate for establishing a legal buffer zone that would keep not just police safe but spectators who at times are inserting themselves and getting either hurt or arrested with interfering with police activity, some are not in favor of the Act believing it infringes on the public’s “right to know” and fear police could abuse the law. A chaotic scene erupted in Worcester when Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers went to arrest a woman who the Dept. of Homeland Security describes as a “violent criminal” here illegally. Friday, a federal judge in Vermont ordered the Trump Administration release Rümeysa Öztürk, the Tufts University student who was arrested by ICE agents in Somerville in March. Öztürk has been held for six weeks at an ICE detention center in Louisiana. The Massachusetts Department of Education proposes that state vocational schools use admission lotteries. This proposal comes after years of criticism by some claiming the current admissions process at Vo-techs across the state, lock marginalized students out. Instead of ranking applicants on selective criteria like grades, recommendations from guidance counselors, and personal interviews, schools would be limited to using attendance and discipline as screening criteria for students to enter the lottery pool.
