For the first time in history a U.S. pontiff has been elected! American Cardinal Robert Prevost, now choosing the name Pope Leo XIV originally hails from Chicago. Pope Leo XIV is considered a centrist but, on many issues, seen as more of a progressive, however he opposes ordaining women as deacons, so he’s considered more conservative on church doctrine. The Future of MA Vocational Schools
The Massachusetts Department of Education proposes that state vocational schools use admission lotteries. This proposal comes after years of criticism by some claiming the current admissions process at Vo-techs across the state, lock marginalized students out. Instead of ranking applicants on selective criteria like grades, recommendations from guidance counselors, and personal interviews, schools would be limited to using attendance and discipline as screening criteria for students to enter the lottery pool. The Feds Arrest Two Judges
The Trump Administration’s aggressive crackdown on immigration continues as federal authorities arrest two judges; a Wisconsin judge and a former New Mexico judge in two separate cases. Both are accused of interfering with Trump administration immigration enforcement efforts. The arrest of Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan is very similar to the 2019 case of MA judge Shelley Joseph who was accused of helping an undocumented immigrant evade ICE agents. The Boston Marathon Bomber’s Death Sentence Appeal
Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his legal defense team continue to challenge the bomber’s death sentence arguing two of the jurors were biased and should have been stricken from the panel. The First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston has instructed Judge George A. O’Toole Jr. to take another look at the alleged bias of those jurors. However, Tsarnaev’s team wants Judge O’Toole to recuse himself (which the Judge refuses to do) over comments he made about the case on a podcast that the defense says raises, “concerns about his impartiality.” Do you think the bomber should receive the death penalty? Movement on Beacon Hill to End Life Without Parole - Part 2
There is a legislative effort on Beacon Hill to give people serving life sentences the chance at a parole hearing. The bill would eliminate life sentences without the possibility of parole, by allowing incarcerated people the opportunity to have a parole hearing after 25 years of their sentence. Karen Read’s Retrial Kicks Off!
The second murder trial began Tuesday for Karen Read, who is accused of killing her police officer boyfriend, John O’Keefe. Prosecutors argue Read backed her SUV into O’Keefe after dropping him off at a party and returned hours later to find him dead. The defense says Read is being framed and is part of a vast conspiracy among the homeowners, law enforcement, and fellow afterparty guests. Read has been charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and leaving the scene.
