Appreciate you guys checking this one out. It's nice that the good part of the smoke is cleared up here in the western part of Oregon. I'm pretty happy about that. I think on the last podcast, and you probably might have heard me talking about the Oregon wildfires. And some of the consequences that have arisen from those starting up over the Labor Day weekend and are really stuck have really taken off over the Labor Day weekend. Really strange to kind of go through it and experience it. You know, I guess there have been other big fires like that in the past. I'm sure there's a lot of stuff in California that is still going on. And I don't think he's had the kind of rain relief that Oregon has been fortunate to get, at least in some northern parts of Oregon. So I think some of that is some good news for the Oregon side. I know that the fires are still going on. I know that they're not really all 100% contained. I think even you know, like the fire that was in Southern Oregon and the talent. The Phoenix area still exists. It's still burning. And it's I think there's another one is shady Cove that's still burning. I think really like there's a significant amount that's still on fire. But I also think it's a little more of a controlled and contained space now. I know that they contain it. And so it's probably g

Appreciate you guys for tuning in to this episode recorded for the first week of August in 2020. And wanted to jump into a couple of the things I've been doing through the month of July and some outdoor camping and travel stuff I've been up to. I was going to run down some of that in this podcast today. I wanted to talk about a trip I made to Eastern Oregon. I think like last week before last is when I was out in this area, and I was trying to get some good observations in for comet nowise I'm not sure if any of you guys got to check that out while it was in its prime viewing section there I think that was why we had kind of like the new moon before it switched over to being gibbous moon or nearly full moon like it's been the last week or so. But I think it was around the 15th through the 25th or so of July. There are some pretty good observations to be made of comet Neo wise, and I guess after kind of reading about it a bit, it's not considered a great comet, like Hale Bopp was, or I think it was I talkie 9996 we hadn't had a great comment in a long time I've ever seen those when I was a kid though that was pretty cool. Like watching the Hale Bopp come through for it seemed like three months or something you know that you're just kind of looking at that in the low corners of the northwestern and Western skies was kind of cruising across the skyline I remember that still from like, third-fourth grade when it was coming through, and I also remember the year before that, when like straight up in the air you know like straight up in the sky at night for it was only like a week or so I was a kid you know, but I remember for that week you can see a real bright two-tailed comet those guns I think I can't remember how to pronounce I think is how you talk here. I think it's it's some Japanese name. Pretty sure. But that was a really cool one. That one I still remember really clearly I was only like, I don't know, seven or something when that like when that comic came through. But I really appreciated getting to make some observations with that one as a kid. I missed Halley's Comet, though, back in what 87, I think, was the last one if it came through. And I probably will be the few years that you know that decade or two of the age range that doesn't get to see Halley's Comet in their lifetime. So I think I was born in 88, of course. So if I make it past 100, maybe you'll see it; what is it maybe like 80 something years, so it's probably not going to come back around until I think it's like the 2017 or 2000 80s that I'd have to make it to for to see Halley's Comet again, that'd be fun, but I don't know, maybe we'll see our future. The future is at that time. But it was really cool to get to see Comet Neo wise; It was just a little below what would be the legs and feet of Ursa Major, the Big Dipper, or like the

Hello, and thank you very much for listening to this episode of the night sky podcast. My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. And tonight we are live again in the field in the wild that we are under the night sky in Maui, Hawaii. And we were up near a coffee plantation up the road from the Lynette Kaanapali area. And it's cool. We have sky above us, we have a little bit of like cloud and mist and stuff over to the side. But it's really more clear and darker than it was a few nights ago when we had talked closer to the full moon. So we probably have probably a couple hours even to tell the moon comes up tonight, I think so it's it's been a couple days, but it's nice. We are under the night sky tonight. And we were going to I guess make some observations and talk about him a little bit while we're hanging out here under the sky. So it's kind of fun. What did we talk about last time we were talking we were going through like a bunch of the star stuff and sort of like where some of the things were, I think we talked about like the Summer Triangle. Or like some of the start like Vega and didn't have an Altair. I wanted to talk tonight about like, how we can see the Milky Way tonight. And it's cool right now this time in October like what you notice over there, it's like you see that area of the sky? And so what you might notice is like what you see Taurus over there, do you see Taurus over there? It's pretty faint, but you can kind of make it that V I'm sure after this car passes. Once the headlights again. Okay, well so Okay, look up there. Over to the east. You see the Pleiades I do see the Pleiades right so if the Pleiades at the tail of the bowl, the little tag of the tail then then the horns of the bowl are down here. So you see the V bright so that we see is all Tiburon. And then we have like the V of the bowl over there and Torah. So we see we see tourists over there. And then we see the Pleiades and then we move up here and we see parts of Perseus so we see like Capella down there in Riga, Riga. I didn't learn my constellations. But we see Perseus up here, which we'll get into that in a little bit, too. I want to talk about Perseus stuff. And then as we move up here, we see Cassiopeia and then we kind of move across here. And then we see the NAB and Seder and Vega. And then I'll tear over to the side. And then we kind of move on further down toward the western horizon where we see Sagittarius. And so what you'll notice with this is this band right here in the Milky Way. You see that out? It's kind of like right through there. Yeah, a lot more noticeable today. Yeah. And what's cool, though, at this time of year is what we're noticing is, so in the summertime, we would have been looking at the Milky Way running north-south as it rose up above the horizon. So you

My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. And tonight we're out in Maui. And we're outside right now. And we're trying to try us out where we do some recordings of podcasts while we're outside and making some observations. And I'm all for that, that even with the wind, and maybe whatever else you might hear in the background, it's maybe a little more interesting to kind of go through some of the observations that we're making while we're making them. So it has a bit more of a like a live feel to it. But I think it's pretty nice tonight. It's cool. I think we're pretty close to a full moon. What would you say it is, Marina. I think that may actually be full tonight. Yeah, it probably looks like it's gonna be at least in the next 12 hours. So I'd say it's pretty close to being a full moon. And I bet it seems like about the right amount of time. It's been about two weeks since we had a new moon a couple of weeks, or you know, like a few weeks back, so it seems like it'd be right in line to be full. about NASA. I guess. This is the October Full Moon which is pretty cool. Was that the Is it the wolf moon? Or is it the November moon? Is it the beaver moon? November is the beaver man November is the beaver moon? Yeah. That's very cool. Yeah, I think that this one is the Wolf Man, the wolf moon, and then September is sort of the harvest. Man. Is that right? I think so. I need to there's a couple ideas around the Harvest Moon, I remember hearing about where it's at what is it? It's like, the first full moon after the autumnal equinox like the fall equinox, September 21. So if there's a full moon that falls after that, pretty quickly, whatever that next full moon is, I think that was supposed to be the Harvest Moon, but also like that the other order of months as there would be harvest in September. And then in October, it'd be like wolf moon, and then beaver moon. And then I don't know what it is in December, but is that it's been out tonight. And looking at the full moon. We're up on a hillside in western Maui, which is pretty cool and new to us. And I think we're looking at a bit of cloud cover that's kind of moving around the mountain over here. And it seems like it's almost like that all the time. Like you look out there. And it looks like it's raining there, doesn't it? Yeah, I think that it is. Yeah, it's interesting. Like how it looks like it's raining out there all the time. I guess it's how how it's made to be a rain forest upstairs because of all the precipitation they get. And I guess that's sort of what I understand about like the weather pattern on the northern side of the island too. Is that like that gets more rain and weather than what we do over here on the the western facing side of this mountain over here. Yeah, up in Kapalua where I work. It is rainy every single morning as seams train off and on throughout the day. Yeah, so it was sprinkling on me when I got off work today. It's pretty good. So it's kind of weird how it goes back and forth like that so much, but yeah, I guess I guess just earlier this week was the orionid meteor shower. Did you read that much on that? I think you were talking to your aunt about that and like how it was coming into its peak phase just a couple days ago? Yeah. I think the 21st and 22nd were supposed to be the peak days Today's the 23rd. So yesterday, the day before? Yeah, it's cool. I got to see like one of them go by while I was out doing some observations, but with the heavy moonlight it's kind of dampened. I guess some of the dark skies that you would have to really, I guess enjoy watching a bunch of meteor shower. Or you're like watching the meteors come in through the meteor shower. But it's cool. Yeah.

Thank you so much for listening to this episode of the night sky podcast. My name is Billy Newman. And we are back with another episode of the podcast today for November 30, 2017. So I guess we're looking at the first week of December 2017. And we are probably looking back a little bit at some of the last, the last few weeks of activity that we've had through November a little bit, too. But it's been good. How have you been, Marina? Pretty good. I notice. It's been a little while since we've done another nightscape podcast, but it's going to be cool. Talking more about events in the night sky and some of the stuff that we're up to. Yeah, I'm really excited to be back into it. No, yeah, I'm happy to be talking with you. It's fun. And so I wanted to come into this podcast. And I wanted to like talk about because there's like a few things that have happened recently, but we haven't really had a chance to talk about them as much. And so I wanted to make sure that we did a little bit of that. I thought it'd be cool to talk about the time change. So it's December now, we've just kind of probably gotten used to the time change of you know, at least for me, like after a couple of weeks of dealing with the with the standard time, and like the early sunsets and all that. And now we're actually getting a lot closer

My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. And we are going to be talking about some of the things in the evening sky and morning sky for the first week of March of 2017. We had a couple things to catch up on, like some things that had happened, I guess in the past couple of weeks of February. Let's see what what did we miss? Like, there was a lunar eclipse? Oh, right. Yeah. I don't think that was really in our viewing. Yeah, I think it ended up happening for people that would have been out in the Atlantic Ocean. And I think for a good bit of the eastern seaboard, over here, I think most of the East Coast would have seen it. And then and what kind of what kind of Eclipse was this one? Because it was, it was a different kind than the one that we're gonna have. Like, we're gonna have a total solar eclipse in August. Yeah. But this one was, was this one a total solar eclipse? Well, this was a this was a lunar eclipse of just the moon, I think is what it was. Yeah. So it's just the moon being on the East Coast is the full moon rose up above the horizon? That's the big difference that it would be for that. And then I think, well, it's Yeah, I think it's been, it might have been only a partial. Maybe that's just

My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. Thanks so much Marina for doing Episode 21 of the night sky podcast with me again today. Hey, thanks, Barry, it was pretty cool. Yeah, so we got a couple of things to talk about. It's been a while since we really discussed a lot of the different changes that have happened with the location, the planets along the ecliptic, and where they are and what what times are going to be up. So we could talk a little bit about that was cool on our last episode, talking more in depth about the intricacies of Venus, I think specifically, and then a little bit of Mars too. But what I was looking at tonight, a dimension where they are, it's like in you know, too, if you look out, if you're in the Northern Hemisphere, you look out toward the west, and then toward the Southwest, up in the sky a little bit, maybe after, I guess, five o'clock or so while it's still in the winter timeline that we've got, you know, while the sun goes down around five o'clock, as we look up into the Southwest, we'll see Venus really bright at the bottom, and then really quite dim now is Mars up above it, which is kind of interesting. My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. And this week, we're going to be talking about some of the news, Sky events that are going on in the night sky above us for the third week of January. And now 2017. Are you doing Marina doing well, it's cool being in the new year. Yeah, I think it's really cool. Now being in 2017, finishing up 2016 coming into the second year of doing the podcast, which is kind of fun. Yeah, it's cool. I will do a few more of them this year. But it'll be fun to kind of hang out, chat a little bit and talk more about, about the things that are going on that we see and our observations of stuff going on in the night above us. But it's cool, checking out the sky. And it really appreciated a lot of the stuff that I've learned so far from doing this podcast, listen to the things that I've kind of been inspired to research from it. Yeah, it has been cool, having more of a reason to try to find out other things. It's been cool. I've learned a lot more than I was expecting to. That's really good. I'm glad. Yeah, I was wondering, I was trying to think over this last year, of different things that we've learned about reviewing a little bit about, like, ukulele is really cool. Yeah, it was really cool. My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. And this week, we're going to be talking about some of the sky washing events that are going on in the sky above us for the first and second week of August. It's really cool. It's already this fine to the year though. So strange. Yeah, we're moving through the summer pretty fast. Yeah, it seems like we've just been pushing through the summer really quickly. It seems like just a few minutes ago, it was early May. And it has Yeah. It's, it's been good, though. I'm really happy that we're moving on in the year, there's some cool stuff coming up. There's some cool stuff we got to see though, too. And that's all kind of changing around a little bit. It's reconfiguring in the southern sky, and there's gonna be some new stuff that we get to see. So we'll talk about that a little bit, too. But I was thinking about it. It's like, it's already into August. And you've heard of it before, like the dog days of summer. We've talked about it a couple of times before. And it's kind of interesting. I didn't I didn't understand this for a long time. I just read it on on an astronomy site, and it kind of started to come together for me. Oh, is that? Where is that? Why it is? What are you know what the deal is with that. My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hanson. I want to say thanks to everybody who's tuning in once again to listen to us talk a little bit about the events that are going to be happening in the night sky above us for the second or excuse me, the third and fourth week of July, in 2016. There's a few things that are going on this week, which would be cool to talk about. And then a few other things that are going to happen are going to happen in like the next three weeks or so. I think those will be fun to talk about, too. Yeah, we've got some cool stuff coming up. It will be cool. Yeah. So I guess talking about a little bit of a news stuff where some of the skywatching events that are going to be happening this week. A few things to keep in mind. Right, is that we just had our full moon the other night. Do remember that? Yeah. Yeah. I think that was like the night teeth right? 19th to 20th. Yeah, the first shoot. Yeah. So now it's a little bit past for now. It's a waning gibbous moon. And that's great, because it's going to be coming up later and later into the evening. And so I think like, what would it be for? My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. And we're really happy to be back again, this week, one more time to do a little bit of a rundown of the news. And some of the cool observations that we've been making of the night sky. The summer sky right now here in July, in the Northern Hemisphere has been really cool. There's a lot of stuff going on. It's just always good observation, weather, right? Like we get to go out every night, we can see more stuff. And the Milky Way's making it up pretty high in the sky now. So that's pretty cool to get to go out and see every night, but there's a lot of cool stuff like in the south sky, with Sagittarius Scorpio and the planets that are out. So it's been cool just to go out and kind of see the progression night over night. A lot of fun doing that with you. Yeah, it's been really fun having some summer weather, some clear skies. observation, I want to do more like telescope observations with Yeah, I do, too. I really what I really want to do, I want to do telescope observations. But I also want to get a pair of binoculars. Oh, yeah, I think that'd be really fun. My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. And this week, we're going to be talking really just about Mars right now. It's, it's at its brightest, I think it's for the next four days or so it's going to be at its very brightest that that we'll be able to see it. And that's because we're passing a point where Mars has been in opposition. And now it's at its closest point, or I think it's brightest pointer at its highest magnitude in the series. And so we thought that was a good point, to, to bring up and to talk about and to do kind of an episode that's all about the motion of Mars that people have been seeing and that we've been observing through the night sky over the past month, and then what motion is going to continue for the next month school, how we can kind of forecast it, and how it's so you know, lockstep and the amount of time that it takes to do these certain types of motions and patterns that have been observed for hundreds of years. 1000s of years now? Yeah, it's really interesting how we're able to predict it really to the day. Yeah. Yeah, it's, it's really, it's really specific, the timing of these progressions, and they don't seem to be that random. What I understand is, is Yeah, if you've been looking up in the night sky, and if you've been

My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. And this week, we're going to be talking about the things happening above us in the sky for the, I guess, 23rd 22nd of April. It's almost the end of April, right? That's like, we're in now. I was looking at some of the events that are going on, and then we're kind of going to dig into a couple of things about the planets that you can see right now. That'd be fun to talk about. It's gonna be cool. There's a lot of stuff going on right now. And we've done a lot this last week, too. Yeah. Yeah, which is, which is definitely the way to go. We got to do more, more observation stuff as much as we can. This is this is the season for us. That that becomes the most possible, especially here in Oregon, and in the Willamette Valley in the winter. And this winter, I think it's been an El Nino year, they say, but you know, there's been some nice days too. It's nice, a lot of waves of clouds. So mostly stormy. Yeah. November, December, January, February, and I'd say March, are all months where there's really consistent cloud cover, and there's a very slim chance that you'll be able to have a continued amount of good observational viewing nights for stars or, or for astronomical events or going on like in the mornings. We rarely, I think, had a day to

My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Rena Hansen. And this time, we're going to be talking about what's going on in the stars above us for the second week of April 2016. Yeah, I guess it's still the first week of April, oh, a few days, it's a couple days into April, and we're gonna be asked for the fourth. I'm not sure when people are gonna listen to it, but probably the next couple of days and, and yeah, we're going to be talking about some of the scholarship events that are going to be going on. And I guess the beginning of April, like the others would be kind of been talking about a couple different topics through each episode that we, we have a discussion on, but this time, we're going to be talking about Mercury, which is cool. So we were talking about that during the time that we were outside doing some observations earlier, is that Mercury is going to be on the rise in the evening sky after the sun is set. That's going to be cool. So this week is going to be going to mark the start of the time that Mercury is going to be visible. We heard about that. Yeah, that's really cool. It's showing up again. Yeah, this year, more than I think in other years, in the past that I'm trying to remember, there's there's just been more opportunities to see Mercury, th

My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. And today we're going to be talking about the changeover to the spring equinox that just happened a couple days ago, the new full moon that we had the eclipse that we had. Yeah, I just had that this morning, right? Yeah. A couple active things going on last couple days. pretty active. Yeah, a little a little bad weather here, though. So we didn't really get to catch the eclipse this morning. Yeah, no Eclipse visible for us. I think it was, I was most visible for people on the west coast, before dawn. And I'm sure there's a lot of people that that got good, a good viewing of it earlier today, or anybody like that's down in California and probably got a way better chance to get a chance to see it. But here in the northwest, it was pretty cloudy over in the West. on the horizon, we had a little bit of sunshine this morning, which I think was a surprise with the rest of the day. It's kind of been on and off again, rain. Yeah, he's really got me here in little Eugene. So we missed out on the eclipse that happened. But yesterday, the moon rose as a full moon and the constellation of Libra. That's where it is right now. And I guess I, so we had the lunar eclipse. And that was at like fou

My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. And we're here today to finally come back from our long hiatus. We've been on vacation. Hey, pretty good reason to be gone. Though we believe in everybody. Yeah. Without an update on the night sky above us for for now two weeks. Oh, man, shoot. Sorry. Everything's changed. So one person he listened. Last time we were talking about you're talking about? Oh, yeah, there's been so many discoveries since last time your gravitational waves have been verified. They've been projected before but now they've been verified, I guess I suppose. They say the math is strong. I'll let the scientific community that that all. But But yeah, they say that they found what was it like a 26. And ours, I think it was 26 and 34. solar mass, black hole orbiting each other, came closer and closer kind of spiraling in on their same like point. And then they finally merged together, when the two giant black holes a solar mass, like we talked about before, is the size of our Sun. So one sun, around Earth is one solar mass. So these black holes were each 30 solar masses, so 30 times more massive than the mass of the sun. And these two black holes smiled at each other. And it's at this rate, I think, predicted in Einstein's theory of special relativity, where it k

My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. And thank you for listening to this week's episode. We're going to be talking a little bit. I think we're going to dig in a little deeper this week into the Chinese New Year. Yeah. Chinese New Year was on Monday, the eighth of this month, I believe. Yeah. So starts Monday, the eighth of this of this month in 2016. And it's a year the monkey this year, that's my year. Little Marina. Yeah, that's pretty cool. I was been ADA. And that was, I think, the Year of the Dragon. Hey, that's cool. Pretty cool one. And I think there's like a handful of another what we just named two of them. So another 10 animals that are in the Chinese zodiac, but we'll get to the Chinese zodiac stuff in a minute. But what's cool, though, so like last year, the Chinese New Year wasn't until almost the end of February. And so it's weird that it's like on a different date. Right? Yeah. And so I had this, I added, because I really don't know much about the Chinese New Year other than that it is celebrated. And that it seems to be January or February, most every year, it's about what I know. But it's different than our calendar, right. So we're trying to dig into that more and figure out how the Chinese had had sort of developed this calendar.

My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. And this week, we're gonna be speaking about a few of the upcoming skywatching events that will be happening in the night sky above us for the first and second week of February 2016. How are you doing, Marina? I'm doing well. That's cool. You know, it's been cool the last the last couple days, because we're fortunate on the west coast, we've, we've had a bit of clear weather, finally, yeah, pushed all the way through January, with all the rain and stuff that we've had kind of that El Nino year coming through, where we get the big rainstorm every week or so coming off of the east side of the earth, excuse me, the west end of the Pacific Ocean blows all the way across over Hawaii kind of comes over. It's the West Coast has been slamming us for like the last 45 days or so. So it's kind of like that weather pattern for the West Coast at least to get that little break in like the first second or third week of February, where you get this little fall spring, you get the first few blooms of the flowers, that sort of thing all through Valentine's Day. It's kind of that I think part of the Mediterranean climate, sort of that same system that they have on the right and Europe also. But so that's a nice opportunity for us to have a chance t
The Night Sky Podcast | Five Planets In The Morning Sky
Five Planets In The Morning Sky Produced by Marina Hansen and Billy Newman. The Night Sky Podcast | Five Planets In The Morning Sky Hello, and thank you for listening to this episode of the night sky podcast. My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. And this week, we're going to be talking about a few of the upcoming sky watching events that are going to be occurring in the night sky above us for the fourth week of January and part of the first week of February two. Yeah, that'd be great. Yeah, the the five planets are visible right now. I think that's probably our focus. Yeah, it's everyone's focus. Anyone that's been like covering the sky watching stuff that's going on. Everybody's talking about it. Because it's such a cool rare event. It's cool. It is really cool. rare, but I was I was looking up some stuff for for before the show. And every every site has stuff about it, Huffington Post, National Geographic, cool. I'm glad that it's being covered so much. I saw a ton of tweets about it. And I try to post some stuff about it, too. I looked a few things up on the sky and telescope side, they always have a pretty good collection, or it's pretty good and pretty secure and safe information to trust about what's going on. And skywatching wise, yeah, they're they're normally pretty accurate. There's, it's often it's difficult to be inaccurate. However, I'm often pretty inaccurate. But yeah, it's exciting right now that the highlight right now is that the five planets are up and visible. We've had it for just about a week. Now, officially, I think that the mercury would be visible in the morning sky. Mercury's one, like we've been talking about a little bit is like the the wildcard it's the one that comes up last. And we'll go first. Right? Because it's so fast, it's so quick to go around the sun. And it is just now starting to be a lot more more visible. It's brighter. Yeah, this, this week is gonna be the prime week for viewing of the five planets. And it's going to be really cool, too, because we're going to have the moon in it also, as a crescent in the morning. It's going to be moving past all of them. Yeah, yeah. So it'll be able to see six of the the visible objects that are not stars in the sky all at one time. And then the sun is rises a little later. But yeah, this week is the week that we're viewing and Mercury is going to be the easiest to do. And it's really, I was looking at the arc of mercury as it as it kind of comes up into the orbit and its highest point in the sky is going to be February 5. And then after that, I think it starts to drop back off, it'll fade back out. And it's slower than it was like in the in the winter, at the end of December, when I had that really fast rise and set over like the course of two and a half weeks. In the night sky. This one's going to be a little bit slower. And so Venus and Mercury are going to start drifting a little bit closer back toward the horizon line, again, closer back toward the sun. But I think mercury will get there first. Maybe at the end of February. Yeah, maybe it's a downer. There's a threshold there. I kind of had my note on about February 23 would be the last date that you'd be able to see mercury. But I bet technically, you could be able to observe it before then. I'm not sure though. Yeah, that seems about right. I think it's roughly a month of time that we have that they're supposed to be all around and potentially visible. Yeah. But yeah, another cool thing about mercury coming up, like you're saying, and it's going to be most visible around the six, it's also going to be closest to Venus, then it's going to be like five degrees apart. I think it's eight degrees apart right now. Oh, wow. Cool. But that's going to be the closest that they're going to be together during this time. Yeah, that's really cool. And that'll make it
The Night Sky Podcast | The Occultation Of Aldebaran
The Occultation Of Aldebaran Viewing the Andromeda galaxy, The occultation of aldebaran, Mercury rising at dawn. Produced by Marina Hansen and Billy Newman. billynewmanphoto.com Hello, and thank you for listening to this episode of the night sky podcast for the third week of January 2016. This week, I'm joined with Marina Hanson once again to talk about some of this week's star and skywatching news and events that are coming up. And when in DC, I do Marina, hey, Billy, I'm doing well. Cool. I'm glad that you're here today, again, with me to talk about some of the cool stuff that's coming up. I think it's been a couple, it's kind of a slow, it's a slow period right now, in January, in this midsection of January, and then it's gonna start picking up a lot at the end of January. And then I think if we get good viewing, at least in the northwest here, I think it's really going to ramp up for us through February and March. And then really, almost all of April, May, June, and all through the summer have a lot of different events going on that are kind of interesting. skywatching things that we'll be able to keep track of. But I think it's a little bit of a law right now. Yeah, I'm excited for the things coming up in the next few months. Yeah, right now it is pretty slow. Well, you know, I can't say it's slow. And then I could say that. I mean, there's like four planets visible. And they AM. Yeah, that's really cool. I guess of the fifth one. Yeah, even as I think it's just a law because there's gonna be a fifth one soon. So that's when like hyack comes in. That's when the news is the headline. Yeah, the four planets being visible is really cool. Yeah. So right now and the aim and we've been kind of observing this. The last couple nights, we've had a couple clear nights in the breaks of all these El Nino storms that keep sweeping through the West Coast. We got a couple clear nights during the last week separated by about five or six days. But I think the first night we got to see that observation, I think was what the ninth where Saturn and Venus were like just a half a degree apart from each other in the morning sky. They were just right up next to each other. That was really cool. Do you remember that? It was like, maybe we can half ago. Yeah, I remember that. Yeah, really cool to see. And then that was like, that's in Scorpio is now in a Helio conjunction in the morning sky. So Helio, I think a Helio conjunction. And this, this might be the wrong use of the term. But what was explained in the way that things were written about, I think this is astrologically Helio conjunctions are the first constellation that rises above the sun in the morning sky. So it'd be the last constellation to rise above the horizon before the sun comes up. Does that make sense? First, the first constellation you see at first light, right? That's the Helio conjunction sign. So that's what some astrological systems, or some calendar systems would use, as their position to identify the constellation in character at that time. So you know how some people maybe complain sometimes that Sagittarius the month that Sagittarius occupies the sun is not the month that the Zodiac identifies for your birthday. Right. And so the reason for this disparity sometimes culturally, was because it was identified through a Helio conjunction of that constellation instead of the other type of conjunct, I think just a regular conjunction, or when when the sun is absolutely in that constellation. So in this in this thinking, it's the sun is now passed, that constellation is now probably in another constellation. But it's that constellation that we see at first light, when the sun just starts to come up. That's the one that I think they would count sometimes. Now that doesn't really even break down or make things make a lot more sense. astrologically. But for us for astronomy, I think it's just kind of interestin

The Night Sky Podcast | Comet Catalina
Marina and Billy talk about comet catalina billynewmanphoto.com Hello, and thank you for listening to this episode of the night sky Podcast Episode Two, recorded on December 14 2015. Today I'm here with Marina Hanson, who is going to talk with me a little bit more about the ongoing Kickstarter project that we have going and talk a little bit about some of the night sky stuff that's happening around us right now. How are you doing this evening, Marina? Hey, baby, I'm doing pretty well. How are you? I'm doing good. And thank you for coming over and hanging out at the studio and recording some stuff with me this evening. I'm happy to should be pretty fun. We've been kind of working on a few studio things and trying to get some stuff sorted out for the podcast and trying to do some ongoing stuff. And I think it'd be fun for you and I to do some like the post production work. I think that'd be cool to start doing as a project with this kind of like what we've been talking about, about figuring out what to say in record spots for like pre recorded segments, get the audio beds, yeah. And get get a structure set up about how the podcast is going to come together when we start doing it more more frequently. Yeah, I think putting together those, those little pieces are gonna be good. Yeah, yeah, it'd be a lot of fun to do that. But yeah, you should start thinking about the stuff that you want it to do, or how it should be. But I'll try and start writing some stuff up too. And then what I'd like to do is put in, like, like, find some cool like Tyco music beds that are sort of nondescript, like some cool like audio cues, that sort of thing, that we can get some cool, like intro and outro stuff that we can find, I think there's a lot of stock stuff that that's available to us, too, that we should try and put in, like Stock Music stuff that we can, we can pick out one for the intro and the outro. So that when we post produce it, we can put together the pieces and you know, have it sound like a full production, we should look at that. I've never really looked at, like stock music before. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I looked at stock photography, and a little bit of stock video stuff. Yeah, not music clips, a lot of the stuff that my dad was doing, had to do with like the stock music stuff. And so I was just kind of cruising through there for a few of the podcasts that we want to put together. And we can find a couple a couple beats or music beds that we can work and pull something out of. And that's what I did like for way back when I put one together, you just put together a couple loops to kind of put your own your own music together. And then you can use that. And did you do that for KB VR? Yeah, that's what I did for for the old podcasts that I was doing. So this one for nice guy stuff, it'll be a lot of fun guys, I want to try and like do this one as a more tightly produced podcast over time, or like something where there's like a couple specific beats to hit, which would be a lot of fun to do, it'd be cool to try and see this thing grow over time. But this project, I think, specifically the night sky.io website, and the calendar, and the podcast is all gonna take a lot of nurturing this year, a lot of energy, and a lot of like feeding it to try and get it to be up and running and to be working. And it should be good. This is a cool project. I like the night sky stuff that we're gonna get to do. And it's a good excuse to kind of write off all of the, like photographic equipment that we want to do for night sky photography, and all the trips and travel stuff that we want to do or telescopes, all that stuff is now included. Yeah, well, we can kind of umbrella as all the stuff that we're trying to do for for night sky, which will be pretty fun. I'm looking forward to getting that telescope or a telescope. I'm looking forward to getting a telescope to in fact,
The Night Sky Podcast | The 2016 Night Sky Calendar
Marina and Billy talk about the 2016 night sky calendar of celestial events. www.billynewmanphoto.com Hello, and thank you for listening to this episode of the night sky.io podcast. My name is Billy Newman. And I'm Marina Hansen. And this is the first episode of a podcast we'll be continuing to do that will be focused on the night sky above us and some of the art projects that we're going to try and build around that, to kind of demonstrate and educate about the events of the night sky throughout the year that's upcoming. So it'll be pretty exciting. I think it'll be a lot of fun. And so this is the first podcast that we're doing. And what we're figuring is we're gonna probably build out a format for it over the next few weeks, as we kind of start to put the project together a little bit more and trying to do a little bit more production stuff. But what I'm excited to do today is talk about a little bit of the basic formula that we've got going on. And the main project that we have going on right now, which is the the night sky.io Kickstarter calendar. So it's this 2016 calendar that we have set up on night sky right now, at Kickstarter calm. And then if you search for night sky, it'll be the first project that you see, which is cool. That's pretty cool. Yeah. So we Yeah, we worked pretty hard for this last week to try and get the night sky Kickstarter project set up ready to go. We have our pledge level set. And we already have a few donors, which is really cool. We'll probably talk about that a little bit later in today's show. And I guess as figuring that, Marina, you and I would just talk a little bit about the art that we're making and about some of the stuff that we're putting together for this project so far. Sure. Sounds like a good plan to me. Yeah. So what have you been working on? So far for night sky stuff? Well, right, this moment, I'm working on a graphic that is going to be used for the website. And also part of it will be reused, and will be a feature in the calendar as one of the landscapes. But it's right now for the graphic piece that it's going to be for the website. It's a silhouette of Mount Hood in Oregon. And I think it's from the perspective or the view from Portland. So the shape of it is kind of from that, that view. Oh, yeah, that makes that side of it. And then above it is, is a very full starry sky, kind of inspired by the Milky Way, but not necessarily exactly the Milky Way. Yeah, yeah. Sort of that idea of large, large amount of star clusters kind of stretched out. Yeah, I think it's really cool. I've been looking at like what you've been working on, and it looks really good. And I guess for this one, we should kind of explain a little bit about what what we're building for the calendar. So I guess we haven't really talked too much about how we're building this calendar, that's going to be like demonstrating the night sky, which we did talk about. And then it's all going to be illustrations that you make of the night sky that sort of a representative of different scenes that we'll see throughout the year, which will be really cool. And then I think this page that you're making right now is really nice with the mountain as the silhouetted mountain and then the milky way above it. I think that looks really cool. Thanks. It's pretty neat. I like the other one that we made to or the the one that you have CRV, the CRV at the at the little precipice with the the Big Dipper out in front of it there. I think that's really cool, too. Thanks. I like that one. Wow. So that'll be one. That'll be a landscape that is also featured in the calendar, though it won't probably won't be the Big Dipper. Oh, yeah. The main feature, though big might be in the background. Yeah, we should make a big dipper when I was gonna say in this in this one. We should have a conversation about like the months and the types of things that
