S2 Ep 164A visit to Black Gate in Galway
A few weeks ago, Myself and Andrea took a day trip to Galway city to visit the Black Gate Cultural Centre. In 2020 both Andrea and I were big champions of Niamh Regan’s debut album Hemet which was released on Black Gate’s label, Indeed, we talked to Niamh on the show that summer, and the record went onto receive a Choice Music Prize nomination last year.Last year the Black Gate venue was streaming live concerts from its small venue space, and this week, it will debut its TV show on TG4 - called Cumasc: Seisiúin sa Black Gate, the show pairs up disparate musicians for a series of collaborative days resulting in performances in the Black Gate. There are 12 episodes of Cumasc featuring the likes of Rhiannon Giddens / Róisín Elsafty and Francesco Turrisi, Rachael Lavelle and Peter Broderick, Seamus Begley and Junior Brother, Jinx Lennon and The Mary Wallopers, Sam Amidon and Siobhán Peoples, Anna Mullarkey and David Kitt's New Jackson and much more.Cumasc is available to watch on the TG4 player from today, before TV broadcast on February 26th.So, Black Gate - is it a label? Is it venue? Is it wine bar? Is it a recording studio?Well, it’s a bit of everything. I’ve always thought that multi-use spaces are the way forward in terms of music and entertainment venues, and when it comes with wine and a cheese board too, well, we thought we better go down to Galway and have a look for ourselves. So Andrea and I did just that, and it just happened to arrive on Black Gate’s fifth birthday. We spoke to Niamh Regan once again, talked to the director of Cumasc Mia Mullarkey, as well as her little sister, the musician Anna Mullarkey, who appeared on the show with David Kitt and wrote the theme song. And we met the people behind the Black Gate including Co-owner Peadar King to hear about how it all came together and their plans for the space, and we’ll hear a bit from one of their upcoming releases too from Rodney Owl.Let’s drop in…Listen to the episode below or subscribe in your favourite podcast app:Subscribe in Apple | Android | ACAST | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS FeedEpisode notes / referencesSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify Playlist View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Black Gate (@blackgategalway) Support Nialler9 on Patreon and join our Discord chat + member playlists & content.Andrea has a Ghost newsletterAndrea's own podcast - My Favourite AlbumSubscribe to the podcast and please leave a review on iTunes, tell your friends or commit to supporting us directly. S2 Ep 163Is it time to quit Spotify?
There's been a lot of talk in Andrea and Niall's circles this week about the ethics of having a Spotify account in the wake of the Joe Rogan / Neil Young flareup. So we thought we'd finally get one of our old pals, Liz Pelly, a NYC writer who has written extensively about Spotify and streaming issues in recent years on to discuss the ethics, morality of the issues that people are talking about while looking at alternative models and services for streaming and Spotify. Why did it take a celebrity podcaster paid by Spotify touting misinformation for this to happen? Why wasn't the long-held issue of small royalty payments by streaming services a greater factor? We look at whether the streaming model is actually sustainable, user-centric payment systems (supported by Deezer) vs pooling, platforms such as Resonate, Bandcamp and how public libraries might point the way forward. Plus a mention for Irish streaming service MINM.Listen to the episode below or subscribe in your favourite podcast app:Subscribe in Apple | Android | ACAST | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS FeedEpisode notes / referencesMusic on this week's show: JarjarJr - 'Boost'Socialized Streaming: A case for universal music access, Real Life, Liz PellyLibrary Music: Public libraries offer small-scale streaming alternatives for local archiving, The Broadcast, Liz PellyPodcast Overlords: Spotify only works for the stars, The Baffler, Liz PellySongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistSupport Nialler9 on Patreon and join our Discord chat + member playlists & content.Andrea has a Ghost newsletterAndrea's own podcast - My Favourite AlbumSubscribe to the podcast and please leave a review on iTunes, tell your friends or commit to supporting us directly. S1 Ep 152Utopia - reimagining a new future after reopening with Una Mullally
This week's episode is a long form conversation with journalist and writer Una Mullally about the central ideas behind the Utopia series, concocted with and author, lecturer and a workers’ rights advocate Conner Habib.Utopia at the National Concert Hall is a series of five speculative and aspirational events happening from today Wednesday October 20th until Sunday October 24th which will feature new forms of gigs and talks with improvised and experimental shows which asks questions of audiences and artists about our future: what do you want? What do we want our future to look like."If this era has changed us, then everything needs to be different. The only option is to strive for utopia.“Una and I talked about what we'd like to see for live art and culture when things reopen, the desire to be around chaotic, loud performance, how art and music brings meaning and reflection that we've been missing, and discuss Night Dances, a recent show we both experienced at Dublin Theatre Festival, along with how we, as a society and people, have changed during this pandemic. We also talk the disconnect between people and politics, in light of the Cobblestone, student protests, Merchant's Arch and the numerous hotel developments around our city.Utopia will feature input from David Le’aupepe, Gemma Doherty (Saint Sister), David Kitt, MayKay, Daoirí Farrell, Rory Friers (And So I Watch You From Afar), Izumi Kimura, Ben Castle, Rebel Phoenix, Strange Boy, DJ Replay, Dyramid, Kate Butler, Don Rosco and No Place Like Drone. S1 Ep 151PinkPantheress, James Blake & the ”new nostalgic”
This week's Nialler9 podcast with Niall and Andrea, is inspired by the sharp rise of London producer PinkPantheress and her sampling garage, drum & bass and pop music of the 2000s-era, which she has labelled the "new nostalgic".I referenced a book last week, in our conversation with Jenn Gannon, Simon Reynolds’ 2011 book Retromania: Pop Culture's Addiction to Its Own Past.Retromania argues that retro revives a past that is barely over and does so with a prevalent mood of postmodern irony.Interestingly, what has happened in the last ten years is an increase in earnestness and almost wholesale dropping of irony, while new artists have continued to copy, sample and draw influence from existing music, the current generation of Gen Z's shifting priorities and attention to important facts and issues in society, marks a sea change in sensibilities. The ironic detachment of the hipster era has been superseded by a mantra of caring - expressions of truth and desire and meaning over bored detachment or non-commitment.PinkPantheress' music brings up ideas about how older generations gatekeep music, and how women and men sampling classic music is viewed differently, how Tik Tok and a lifetime of internet culture has freed younger artists to express themselves cross-genre and how being a bedroom pop artist is now a phenomenon of relatability rather than a trend of style. We also talk about the parallels between PinkPantheress and James Blake who first arrived sampling the likes of Kelis and Aaliyah, and whose electronic music went on to influence the mainstream, as Blake's own music, as heard on the just released Friends That Break Your Heart, has moved increasingly earnest itself. S1 Ep 150Spice Girls, Girl Power and 90s Ladettes with Jenn Gannon
On this week's Nialler9 podcast, Niall and Andrea are joined by Jenn Gannon to talk about a recent piece she wrote for the publication Rogue Collective called Girl powerless: Why the 90s and 00s weren’t as empowering as they seemed (available on subscription).Jenn's piece was inspired by watching the recent Channel 4 two-part documentary Spice Girls: How Girl Power Changed Britain, which as well as telling the story of the Spice Girls rise and fall, also discusses '90s Britpop culture at the time from '90s ladettes to Girl Power to how famous women were coerced into playing along to Chris Evans' leering and problematic presenting style on TFI Friday.Jenn joins us to talk about growing up in the era and the early 00s, along with discussions about body-shaming in magazines, lads mags like FHM, the marketing co-opting of the term Girl Power and the retromania of our recent past.TW: there is discussion about weight loss and eating disorders around 42 minutes in.Listen to the episode below or Subscribe in your favourite podcast app:Subscribe in Apple | Android | ACAST | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS FeedSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistAndrea has a new podcast - My Favourite AlbumSupport Nialler9 on Patreon and join our Discord chat + member playlists and content.Andrea has a Ghost newsletterSubscribe to the podcast and please leave a review on iTunes, tell your friends or commit to supporting us directly. S1 Ep 147Robbie Kitt on clubbing as culture & the politics of the everyday
Are you a podcast listener? Show your support on PatreonRobbie Kitt is a DJ and producer from Dublin who makes music as R.Kitt. Robbie is a passionate advocate of late night clubbing as culture and one of the main voices engaging with the government as Give Us The Night. On the day that the government announced the Night-Time Economy Taskforce report, outlining recommendations for reform and licensing changes for the nightlife industry and culture, Robbie talked to Niall and Andrea about some of the ideas he recently shared in an IGTV video .With gigs, nightclubs and festivals reopening properly in Ireland from next month, we talked to Robbie about dancing as a political act, engaging with the political system and the politics of everyday.Robbie talks about how far the Give Us The Night campaign has come in getting clubs recognised as a cultural activity, systemic issues around dismantling decades old habits and laws, how government decisions don't include emotional and societal metrics, and the lack of trust of Irish citizens and young people in public spaces. We also discuss how the pandemic has underscored the need for cultural change, and how small communities can bring positivity in our country through behaviour and small acts without waiting for the government to enact that change. It was an enlightening chat.Listen to the episode below or Subscribe in your favourite podcast app:Subscribe in Apple | Android | ACAST | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS FeedSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistAndrea has a new podcast - My Favourite AlbumSupport Nialler9 on Patreon and join our Discord chat + member playlists and content.Andrea has a Ghost newsletterSubscribe to the podcast and please leave a review on iTunes, tell your friends or commit to supporting us directly. S1 Ep 146Kanye & the problematic dichotomy of Donda
Like the podcast? Show support for Nialler9 on PatreonYes, Donda, Kanye West's tenth studio album finally arrived but not without a lot of baggage, abhorrent endorsements, and questions about its eventual release. Both myself (Niall) and Andrea felt queasy about directly reviewing art that platforms alleged abusers, assaulters and homophobes. So while Kanye has moved from red hats to red flags, we took a different tack to a traditional review. We look at Donda in the context of Kanye's career, and particularly his tumultuous last few years and how his art and his status has changed, how Kanye has abandoned traditional releases in favour of ever-shifting, unsettled tracklists, "listening parties" and albums. How publicly showing your music to the public before "release" makes everyone an executive producer. We look at the rollout, how the platforming of Marilyn Manson, DaBaby and Chris Brown in particular make Kanye a hollow evangelical edgelord, raise questions about engaging with popular music and art, from both a critic and fan perspective. Andrea and I discuss Kanye the rapper, Kanye the producer and Kanye the artist. We talk the dichotomy of Donda - an album ostensibly about his mother, is found quite lacking in that regard, and how Kanye has subsumed aspects of his religion into his music, while not holding the values of that faith to account on this very long release.Listen to the episode here or subscribe in your favourite podcast app:Subscribe in Apple | Android | ACAST | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS FeedSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistAndrea has a new podcast - My Favourite Album - The first guest is Sarah From Pillow Queens.Support Nialler9 on Patreon and join our Discord chat + member playlists and content.Andrea has a Ghost newsletterSubscribe to the podcast and please leave a review on iTunes, tell your friends or commit to supporting us directly. Podcast: Why have gigs not come back to Ireland yet?
Like the podcast? Show support for Nialler9 on PatreonIt's been over 500 days since the live events industry has been able to function fully over 500 days without proper gigs, clubs, art, theatre, comedy and EVENTS.As we reach over 83% vaccinated, despite a sustained campaign for clarity, the live events industry is no closer to knowing a plan for the sector.Yesterday, the government's Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin met key stakeholders of the industry once again, but all that seem to come out of it was that she can't get her Cabinet to take her seriously. The only conclusion to draw is that the government do not think that this industry is worth a serious consideration. An entire industry, the only industry left to reopen and it is disrespected and ignored. As thousands of people gather outdoors at events in Northern Ireland across the border, and there is still no information on whether gigs can go ahead in any small or medium capacity in September, October, November, December and beyond.Niall and Andrea discuss how we got here, what we can do and if there's anything we can do next? Thanks to Bressie, Shane Dunne (Indiependence, EPIC, MCD), Lyra and Stephen Butler (Set Theatre Kilkenny and Labyrinth) for their input also.Listen to the episode here or subscribe in your favourite podcast app:Subscribe in Apple | Android | ACAST | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS FeedSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistSupport Nialler9 on Patreon and join our Discord chat + member playlists and content.Andrea has a Ghost newsletterSubscribe to the podcast and please leave a review on iTunes, tell your friends or commit to supporting us directly. S1 Ep 137James Vincent McMorrow talks about what needs to happen next for live music in Ireland
Like the podcast? Show support for Nialler9 on PatreonOn last week's podcast, Niall recounted his experiences at the trial live music event in the Iveagh Gardens where James Vincent McMorrow and Sorcha Richardson played outdoors for 500 people with social distancing and safety measures in place, without any advance PCR or Antigen testing (as we've heard this week, NPHET's Tony Holohan does not recommended Antigen tests for international travel) .Aside from the personal and social aspects of the gig discussed, we acknowledged the gig was met with a lot of negative criticism where a fair amount of people saw the event as a PR stunt with no meaningful contribution to the return of live music for Irish artists and fans this summer. On this episode, with further pilot gigs to take place next week, we are talking to James VIncent McMorrow himself in a near-hour long chat about his expectations for the event, what his hopes for it were and how the event reduced in ambition over time. We talked about the negative criticism, how the overtly cautious approach and over-reliance on optics from the government informed these pilot events. James wants more fairness in helping the live music industry get back to work sooner like other industries, and thinks that we need greater noise from artists and industry to make that happen.Listen to the episode here or subscribe in your favourite podcast app:Subscribe in Apple | Android | ACAST | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS FeedSome quotes from James from our chat.On the return of live music:"We're just looking for like a viable opportunity to get those people that have been fucked over for a year and a half. And we're past the point now of it like last year, totally, you couldn't come out and be like, "bring shows back" because it was like, we're in the midst of this thing. We need to protect people. And everyone, everyone in this industry was a willing participant in that because we all understood what was at stake. But if you see other industries thriving and getting back to normal, or whatever the version of normal is now and you see these other industries still being left behind because it gets thrown this idea of caution. You have to be cautious and you're like, Where's the fairness in the caution? Where's the where's the caution scale? I just haven't no one showed it to me.""I want to see someone on a government level saying we don't think that some dude singing a Kings of Leon song in a bar in Temple Bar is going to be the difference between a super spreading COVID event or not, people are going to be in pubs in a couple of weeks or in indoor dining, they're not going to be in there with tape measures making sure people are a meter apart. But in the fields, they were two meters apart... you have to treat it fairly, you have to treat the music industry with the respect that it deserves. And it would take I think it takes maybe a few other bigger musicians coming out as well and saying the same thing."On getting back to basics with live music:But I'm honestly here more concerned with wedding bands and people in bars singing cover songs that aren't allowed to and the conversation isn't happening. They [the government] didn't come back on it and they need to come back on it they need to say that that's fine, that's safe, because it is fine and it is safe. It's safe as long as you said like it 2000 people in like outside beside the Wellington monument [in Phoenix Park] drinking totally fine, totally safely all last summer and you could have just put a stage there. I put a proposition to the government to say can we put some stages up and I'll go and play for free I'll get friends to play for free and again they came back and said it was that they needed to be more cautious in different things and thatis beyond my paygrade that will be on most of our pay grades but fundamentally use your eyes and ears you ... Niall tells Andrea about it all. We discuss the social and personal aspects of attending gigs post-COVID. Was it actually a pilot event if there was no data or COVID testing done on site? S1 Ep 133St. Vincent takes us downtown to ’70s New York
Like the podcast? Support Nialler9 on PatreonThe sixth album from Annie Clark aka St. Vincent is inspired by music made in sepia-toned downtown New York from 1971 to 1975.The title Daddy’s Home refers to her father’s release from prison in 2019 after doing 10-years stretch for manipulation of the stock market with a scheme that defrauded 17,000 investors out of $43m. After his release, Clark delved back into her father's record collection and so began St Vincent’s 1970s New York themed album, produced by Clark and Jack Antonoff.Niall and Andrea deep dive into the record. Bowie himself in the 70s termed his Young Americans period “Plastic Soul” are we getting a version of that here? It is art made from an imagined past or is Daddy's Home a fresh take on vintage funk and 70s rock sounds? How does it fit in the St. Vincent discography? Is It as Gritty, Grimy & Sleazy as suggested? S1 Ep 131Podcast: #BrokenRecord & the campaign to fix streaming
Support Nialler9 on PatreonThe lack of income in the last year for musicians during a pandemic highlighted just how little streaming pays out in terms of an artist's overall revenue. The most streamed artist in the world in 2019 was Drake who only made 30% of his money from streaming.Something is broken. The #BrokenRecord campaign started by Tom Gray in the UK has been mounting pressure on music streaming services and labels to change the way they do business. Aided by UK Parliamentary Inquiries and a groundswell of support that lead to 156 musicians including Paul McCartney, Damon Albarn, Gary Barlow, Kano, Annie Lennox, Kate Bush, Mike Skinner, Noel Gallagher and Roots Manuva release an open letter to the Prime Minister calling him to intervene to put the value of music back "in the hands of music makers."On this episode, Niall and Andrea contextualise how the campaign got here, how a typical major label deal works, the issues around streaming rates and how Spotify royalties works, recent streaming developments and the responses in the past year from musicians towards the issue.Plus, why your algorithmic playlists on Spotify might be problematic, and the alternatives to the big DSPs.Support Nialler9 on Patreon and join our Discord chatAndrea has a Substack newsletter to subscribe to.Subscribe in Apple | Android | ACAST | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS FeedSubscribe to the podcast and please leave a review on iTunes, tell your friends or commit to supporting us directly.
