Christian McCaffrey carried the load last year, but the teams ground game struggled, ranking low in rushing yards and yards per attempt. Coach Kyle Shanahan has expressed the need for real help to support McCaffrey, as the current backups lack his pass-catching abilities and versatility. The team has tried drafting help, but with limited success. They currently have McCaffrey, James, Guerendo, and Taylor, and may consider adding another draft pick, late free agent, or trade to bolster their running back corps.
