MTA Mulls Open Gangway Trains: A New Era for Subway Cars
The MTA is considering incorporating open gangway trains in its upcoming order of 2,390 new subway cars. These state-of-the-art R262 and R262A models will replace aging trains on the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 lines. Up to 60% of the fleet could feature open gangways, allowing passengers to move freely between cars. The MTA is currently studying the benefits and drawbacks, such as maintenance challenges and rider behavior. Open gangway trains could handle post-pandemic crowds better and reduce subway surfing. The MTA has been testing open gangway R211 trains since February and will decide on the final mix of open and closed cars for modernization.
