Show Notes
New York Citys Legal Aid Society, established in 1876 to protect German immigrants, celebrates 150 years of service. From its humble beginnings to becoming the citys largest provider of free legal aid, it now serves two million low-income residents annually. The societys impact on civil rights history is evident in its defense of Attica prison uprising participants, advocacy for Willowbrook State School changes, and support for homeless families and Rikers Island detainees. To commemorate the milestone, a new exhibit opens at the New-York Historical Society, followed by a panel discussion on March eighteenth featuring city corporation counsel Steven Banks, Legal Aids top attorney Twyla Carter, and historian Bekah Friedman.
