Lady Deborah Moody, an English widow and Anabaptist, established one of Americas first planned communities in Brooklyns Gravesend neighborhood in the 1640s. Her grid-like design, featuring straight streets and a central crossroads, still shapes the area today. Hailed as Americas first woman town planner, Moodys influence can be seen in Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and Bensonhurst. Her legacy lives on in Brooklyns streets, parks, and landmarks, including Lady Moody Square park and an unmarked grave in an old cemetery.
