Show Notes
John Shippen, the first Black professional golfer in America, overcame racial barriers to compete in the 1896 U.S. Open. Despite protests from white golfers, he was allowed to play, marking a significant moment in sports history. Shippen later became the head pro at Shady Rest Golf Course, the nations first Black-owned club. His legacy was honored with a headstone, a putter, and a PGA tour card, after being largely forgotten.
