Show Notes
In his new book, Teenagers: The Rise of Youth Culture in New Zealand (Auckland University Press, 2017), Chris Brickell, Associate Professor of Gender Studies and Head of the Department of Sociology, Gender & Social Work at the University of Otago, explores the lives of teenagers in New Zealand from the 19th century through the 1960s. While most histories of New Zealand grant young people only a marginal role in the story, Brickell draws on their diaries, letters, and photographs to illuminate the larger-scale changes going on in New Zealand society, from work and school to leisure and social mores.
