nerdfest Podcast: Movies, TV, Trivia and Fun!

In this recommendations episode we discuss alternate history drama “For All Mankind” as well as off-the-wall dark comedy “The Baby”. We also bow down once again to the legendary Sir David Attenborough with the release of “Frozen Planet 2.” And as “Thor Love and Thunder” has now arrived on Disney Plus, Jon leads a spoilerific discussion about the Asgardian’s latest (mis)adventure. Plus, it’s that time again where one our lovely nerds gets one of their “Shameful Gaps” heroically filled. One of us has never seen John Carpenter’s “The Thing” so recently watched it for the very first time, and is here to tell the pod world what they thought.

Buffs! Bluffs! And…patio advice? Today’s episode takes us into Nintendo’s naughty past, and the nuances (or lack, thereof) of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. We also go behind the scenes of “Tremors”, and Hazel has some wonderful facts (and one bluff) about Ed Kramer- iconic visual effects supervisor at ILM. We also give our initial thoughts on “Rings of Power” (we’re divided on this one) and “The Offer”; which tells the story of the making of The Godfather. Plus, if you need any patio advice, or will do in the near future, Peter has you covered!

For this recommendations special we chat about the films and TV shows that captured our attention this week, including early impressions of “She-Hulk” and “House of the Dragon”. Our personal picks include Jon’s review of 'Sandman', a show he’s waited desperately for for over 30 years. Does it live up to his dreamy expectations? Peter discusses 'Prey', Disney Plus’ ambitious Predator prequel, and Hazel enthuses about 'Bad Sisters', a Sharon Horgan-led comedy drama whodunnit series on Apple Plus. Andy gets passionate about Netflix’s 'Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story', and finally Dan asks us to lower our inhibitions and hear about Jermaine and his two Clements, in 'Nude Tuesday' – leave it to Dan to lower the tone….

We recorded this episode in the evening for a change, and that inspired us to take a…well, slightly different tone… We have a portly-proportioned amount of nerdy trivia in this episode, as our Buff or Bluff quiz explores MCU character origins, films which were altered post-production, a box office bonanza from Peter, and tales from Schitt’s Creek. Plus, Hazel has a very fun quiz for her 3 little pigs, as she has altered the synopses of many a much loved film. The nerds have to change one letter in the movies' title as a result. Come on - who wouldn’t want to watch a film about a cyborg assassin that is sent back in time to give someone a curly hairstyle popular in the 80s? We’re back after our summer break, and we start our show by revelling in all the glorious nerdness that was announced at the San Diego Comic Con. Then it’s recommendations time. Dan has always wanted to be a cat (because a cat’s the only cat that knows where it’s at) and he finally gets his chance with new game 'Stray'. Peter howls about new Prime TV show 'Wolf Like Me', starring Isla Fisher and Josh Gad. Meanwhile Jon commits some 'Crimes of the Future' as he had the opportunity to watch David Cronenberg’s latest (hear why Dan, “Couldn’t be more out.”) And finally Hazel gets all shook up by Baz Luhrmann’s 'Elvis', a film she couldn’t help falling in love with.

We're all shook up this week, as Andy, Hazel, Dan, Peter and Ian test each other in a round of Buff or Bluff fit for the King! Andy puts on his blue suede shoes for some Elvis Presley trivia (TREASURE APE!), while facts about George Clooney are always on Ian's mind. We also feature the return of Shameful Gap: when one of our nerds had never seen the 90s classic Cool Runnings, they realised it was now or never, and jumped in their Disney+ bobsleigh to right that wrong. Never mind the bollocks, here’s another Nerdfest episode! It’s recommendations time, as our own rotten Jon discusses Danny Boyle’s new limited TV series 'Pistol'. Ian Mayor is back with us on day release from The Void. He and his wife have been watching 'The Flight Attendant Season 2'; a Hitchcockian style dark comedy, and he’s here to talk about why you should be watching it too. Peter reviews new sci fi series 'Night Sky', starring Sissy Spacek and J.K Simmons, who discover a portal in their backyard leading to another planet. And since Hazel has been AWOL with Covid n that, she has a trio of recommendations of things she’s been watching whilst under the weather - 'Top Gun: Maverick', 'The Time Traveller’s Wife' (“I’m going to bat for it because no one else will”) and new Netflix series 'The Lincoln Lawyer.' May the anarchy commence.

This time Jon, Andy Peter and Ian Mac try to Bluff each other with "facts" about anthropomorphic appliances, random stories including Ryan Reynolds' day job, the unlikely dark endings of some nineties sitcoms, and the many bizarre things which movies got retitled in other countries. And our nerds have also been feeling the force of the new "Obi Wan Kenobi" series on Disney+.

We enter the Speed Force this week as Dan, Andy, Peter, and a virtual Jon discuss this year’s Oscars, including Zack Snyder’s “most cheerworthy moment” and the winner of our annual sweepstake! We also discuss the latest slice of MCU TV - it’s fair to say we’re loving "Moon Knight" so far, even if our impersonations of new hero Steven Grant are of variable quality… The lunar theme continues in our regular Buff or Bluff segment as Andy concocts some movies about the moon. We also have rounds on Star Trek cameos, Meat Loaf’s hot sauce, and famous film farts (yes, farts). And if that wasn’t enough podcast for you, Andy also prepared a quiz of iconic movie quotes as you’ve never heard them before!

The wonderful Ian McLaughlin is back with us this week, so of course he has us all doing all sorts of impressions and accent attempts, and generally taking the show off the rails. We do though manage to get some new recommendations out for you. Ian enthuses about paus.tv - a new streaming service that aims to support new filmmakers. Ian’s recommendation is to watch “Paul is dead”, a short film inspired by the conspiracy theory of Paul McCartney being replaced by a lookalike. Hazel reviews “Severance”, Apple TV’s offbeat thriller series about a man who takes drastic steps to forget about his job. Peter has been watching “Peacemaker”, James Gunn’s spin off series with the character from The Suicide Squad. And, as it’s now available for digital download, Jon takes us on a rollercoaster of a review with “Spider-Man No Way Home.” This way spoilers be…

It's "Women's History Month", so our nerds discuss some of the wonderful women that have inspired us so much in film. We also have another round of Buff or Bluffs, in which Jon loses control over some implausible Game Controllers, Hazel admires some groundbreaking female comedians, Peter takes the Mr. Men on a European tour , and Andy gets wood about some trees.

We travel back to the 90s for this recommendations episode, as Peter reviews the new miniseries “Pam and Tommy”. We discuss the greater implications of the show, before veering back to low brow by chatting about *that* talking penis scene. Dan ups the cultural ante with his glorious review of “The Tragedy of Macbeth”, whilst Hazel takes a trip to Belfast for Kenneth Branagh’s semi autobiographical (and wonderful) drama. Finally Jon puts us through another Chronology lesson, as he sat through the latest attempt to revive the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. Then it’s our favourite time of the year - Hazel’s needlessly complicated Oscars sweepstake! And this year’s draw has an added twist…

Our nerds excitedly preview the movies we’re looking forward to in 2022. It’s safe to say the one we’re most anticipating is MOOOOONFAAALLLL. There’s no doubt in our minds that this will be the greatest action movie ever made. What greater jeopardy is there than the moon falling on your head? (We also preview some less-important films.) But that’s not all, as we also have our recommendations for the latest and greatest things you can watch right now. Ian Mac explores the life of stand up comedian Lenny Bruce in “Lenny.” (We know it’s not new, but it’s so worth a watch if you haven’t seen it). Then Louise semi-enthusiastically reviews Sex and the City reboot “And Just Like That.” Peter ventures into the wilderness with new drama “Yellowjackets”. And Jon experiences the supernatural in Netflix’s mini series “Midnight Mass”. Finally Hazel discusses one of the most interesting TV series she’s ever seen: "Landscapers" with Olivia Colman and David Thewlis. MOOOOONNNNNFAAAALLLL (Please don’t be crap)

A slightly belated, but huge milestone Nerdfest episode! Due to circumstances beyond our control, we couldn’t properly celebrate recording 100 episodes together until now - in episode 101. But boy do we make up for it. Hazel has concocted a feature that ensures we reflect fondly on some of our favourite recording moments, including how many times Jon has had to apologise for something he’s said. And Dan has come up with a top 100 quiz - which…well, let’s just say it’s not what you might be expecting. And since it is technically episode 101, we join with Andy and Peter to create the Nerdfest Room 101. Each nerd chooses an aspect of the filmmaking process that they find irksome, and encourage their fellow nerds to send it into the abyss. Have we made the movie world a better place? Let us know! After a small hiatus for a nerd wedding, we are back with aplomb! And we have an entire feast of TV and film recommendations for you. Ian Mac drums home the merits of “Count me In”, a new Netflix documentary featuring rock n roll’s greatest ever drummers. Kerris takes a sip of “Brand New Cherry Flavor”, a mind bending limited series set in early 90s Hollywood. Peter ponders the question, “What If?” And purely coincidentally, he reviews Marvel’s latest TV offering of the same name. Andy enthuses about the Ray Harryhausen exhibition he and Hazel visited on their honeymoon. Which leads the nerds down an animated memory lane of one of the industry’s most influential creators. And Hazel heads back to the Cold War to review “The Courier”, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch’s salesman turned MI6 spy. But that’s not all! Andy has a brilliant cryptic film quiz that gets all the nerds thinking outside of the box. Enjoy!

We got in a bit of trouble from Mary Whitehouse’s ghost after last week’s episode, so this week we have a completely clean show that’s not rude at all* In fact, Jon takes things so far as to review the film “Censor” which is all about how we can best oppose modernism, and build more vernacular architecture. It’s DEFINITELY not about 1980s video nasties. In other recommendations, Dan presents genre bending, time twisting, alternative history novel “The Kingdoms”. and sings the praises of documentary “1971: The Year that Music Changed Everything”. Peter treads a very fine line by explaining “Why Women Kill”, the second season of which is coming soon to Alibi. Andy generously gets “Another Round” in, a brilliant Oscar winning Danish drama made by Thomas Vinterburg and starring Mads Mikkelsen. And Hazel reviews the action-packed “Black Widow”, Marvel’s first cinematic release in two years. *not actually true, I mean not even close!

Dan returns to join Jon, Andy and Peter as our nerds test each other's knowledge in an all-quiz special. Inspired by Marvel's "Loki", Dan's got some stories about what our favourite Variant got up to as a Norse god. Can you tell the myths from the mythstakes? And Peter goes all TVA too, with a timey-wimey quiz about memory in movies. And, of course, Film Buff or Film Bluff returns with facts covering everything from Crispin Glover's song about a 'Clowny clown clown' to Mary Whitehouse's attempts to ban all filth from the airwaves. Good thing she never heard our Podcast - we wouldn't stand a chance!"

How is Diana Prince’s second solo outing? Why is the third best famous Chris back? Does having glasses really make you less sexy? We discuss all that and more, for a movie that we reeeeeeallly wanted to like.

We find out what the nerds got up to over Christmas and what nerdy presents we were gifted. It’s great to have Ian Mayor back with us, who has a present for Dan and Hazel and some pretty bad news for Jon... in this episode we discuss the treasure trove of new shows and movies announced by Disney just before Christmas. From 'Rogue Squadron' to 'Lando', to 'Secret Invasion' and 'Ironheart' (and everything in between!)we are in full speculation mode about what those shows could bring. Also in this episode Hazel has devised a “Who am I?” quiz, with a series of cryptic clues for the nerds to try and guess which actor she’s talking about. It’s the Nerdfest review of the year! Join us as we celebrate all the joyful things that 2020 brought us, and none of the dumpster fire awfulness. Peter, Andy, Dan, Hazel and Jon have all compiled our top ten lists of the best nerd pop culture this year, and we use our last podcast of 2020 to discuss, argue, surprise and tut our way through them. And whilst we have some things on our lists which won’t surprise many listeners (yes, Dan and Hazel hijack the beginning of the podcast to sing the praises of Hamilton and yes, Jon has some more obscure horrors to recommend) there are a couple of unexpected entries. And as always, comedy hijinks ensue. Whilst we haven’t been able to be in the same room together to record the vast majority of podcasts in 2020, we’ve loved being able to bring you episodes every two weeks. Thank you to Peter and his technical expertise for finding a way for us to do it. Hopefully 2021 will be a much better year for everyone, but until then, there are plenty of nerdy things to distract us. Merry Christmas, and we’ll catch you on the other side of 2020.

(Full disclaimer - We’re not sure WHY we got onto the subject of a certain part of the human anatomy and how often it ‘shows up’ in film, but that’s the path Kerris leads us down...) Kerris befuddles us all with pranks from Japanese game shows. Followed by Peter, who's been spending his time wisely in lockdown on the trashiest of trash TV, and has three plots for movies allegedly streamed in 2020. Halloween! The inspiration for so many great movies, which we try and rattle off in quick succession in our opening segment. From the moments that shook our childhoods, to what we think defines a great horror, be afraid. Be very afraid. After a quick change of underwear, we move on to discuss our recommendations of the week. First up is Dan who is sucked in by “Vampires Vs The Bronx”. Then Andy recommends the latest Sofia Coppola/ Bill Murray collaboration “On the Rocks”. Peter leads the charges against “The Trial of the Chicago Seven” (it was acquitted, on account of being great). And Jon recommends yet another disturbing horror movie that probably no one else will ever watch, “Possessor”. And finally Hazel rocks out to “Rocks”; the latest brilliant and heartwarming independent film to have found a home on Netflix. So....what’s *your* favourite scary movie?

Its Buff or Bluff time again as our nerds try to hide 4 massive whoppers in amongst 12 fabulous facts- will it take a truth serum to find out which is which, and can you beat the team? This time around, Dan covers masks (and The Mask), Jon describes some weird director antics, Peter polishes up our knowledge of Metal Mickey, and Andy evokes great showman William Castle and the amazing stunts he’d pull to promote his movies. In a “wide ranging discussion” we also reminisce fondly about Gladiators (although Jon and Peter are more concerned with Jet’s appearances on GamesWorld) and a close encounter with a manatee, and peek a little behind the scenes at how the podcast is put together, as Jon storms off to his trailer.
