SGPN writer Jeff Fox visits the NBA Gambling Podcast to discuss his latest article “Which NBA Teams Are Best & Worst at Drafting?” with host Ryan McKee. Both Jeff and Ryan grew up as Phoenix Suns fans, so it’s especially tough for them to go through the worst NBA drafting teams results from 2014-2018. Even casual fans should be able to guess which teams are the best NBA drafting teams last decade: San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors, Houston Rockets, etc. However, Jeff’s analysis gives us tangible numbers to back up our eye tests.He took a player’s draft spot and subtracted his WS from that number. If a player is the top WS producer in his class, but was picked 30th, he scores 29 points for the team who selected him. The team in this example got a player worth 29 places more than the spot where they drafted him. Ryan and Jeff debate whether that’s the best advanced statistic to use and agree that the WS rankings of average per pick per team are more accurate than total Win Shares. That’s because a team like the Philadelphia 76ers had so many draft picks during The Process.Ryan ends the podcast by asking Jeff which 2020 NBA Draft lottery teams are most likely to make the best picks. Despite not being a good team in terms of season-long records, the Minnesota Timberwolves do have a good record of drafting top talent recently. Also, the Golden State Warriors proved that they can find great value at any spot. NBA Finals Game 1 did not go as expected. After a slow start in the first quarter, the Los Angeles Lakers dominated. The Miami Heat didn't look like the tough, well-coached team we watched through the 2020 NBA Playoffs. They looked slow, their three-point shots were off, and then they caught the injury bug. Goran Dragic suffered a torn plantar fascia and didn't return to the game after halftime. Bam Adebayo injured his shoulder and left the game in the third quarter. First, they recap the weird fucking games from Wednesday night. Zach is angry at the officiating in both games. The Heat seemed to have the game well in hand until the very end, when some fluky plays compounded with some bad officiating calls threw everything in flux. Miami still won. After two games, their odds to win the series about gone from +375 to -160.It's rare a team comes back to win a playoffs series after being down two games. Still, Zach likes Milwaukee to bounce back in game three and win. Over the last two games, he's averaging 46 points per game, shooting 68%, and 65% from three-point land! Behind his emotional Game 6 performance, the Nuggets forced Game 7 against the Utah Jazz on Tuesday.The first game on Tuesday's slate is Boston Celtics vs Toronto Raptors (-1.5). Ryan and Zach discuss why Toronto continues to be favored after Boston totally dismantled them in Game 1 of the series. In fact, the Celtics are 4-1 against the Raptors this season. Ryan argues they are the better team. Their lineup is the Clippers-lite version of Eastern Conference. Zach is still leaning toward the Raptors in Game 2, but he likes Boston for the overall series.The late game is Game 7 of the Utah Jazz vs Denver Nuggets series. The Nuggets are favored by one point and it certainly seems like they have all the momentum. Coach Mike Malone can scheme with both Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokić as number one options now. Donovan Mitchell will have get the Utah offense back to its earlier form in the series. Through the first four games, the Jazz averaged 125 points per game. The last two games, only 107 points. It's been three long days of tense emotions in the NBA with the Milwaukee Bucks starting the wildcat strike by refusing to play their game against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday.
