Ep 806Schwarber & Harper's Blasts Sink the Nats

The Nats and Phillies were tied entering the 7th, but Kyle Schwarber & Bryce Harper went Back-to-Back to put Philadelphia up 6-2 for good. Mark & Al gather after a Friday night that saw a repeat Opening Day pitching matchup between MacKenzie Gore & Zack Wheeler.(06:10) Daylen Lile homered while getting the start in LF. Lile is having a very good August as he is hitting .319 and has a .849 OPS.(09:00) Brady House was not in the starting lineup in favor of Paul DeJong at 3B. House has only played in two of the past five games and that is causing Al a lot of frustration.(13:05) MacKenzie Gore immediately gave up two runs, but settled down from there. Gore struck out seven and his ERA dropped a bit to 4.04.(19:00) Schwarber continued his MVP campaign as he hit his 43rd HR of the season and 5th this year vs. Washington. Mark points out just how costly his injury was back in July of 2021 while with the Nationals.(24:10) Keibert Ruiz & Jose Tena were seen pregame working at 1B with Miguel Cairo. Is it a possibility that Ruiz will take reps at 1B after he eventually returns from the IL?(30:15) What does it say about Mike DeBartolo after making a bold move like DFA'ing Nathaniel Lowe? Ep 805Crews Has a Winning Return + Lowe DFA'd

The Nats topped the Phillies 3-2 on Thursday night to open a four game set in D.C. Al & Tim have a lot to get to as prior to the game Dylan Crews was not only activated, but the corresponding roster move likely raised a few eyebrows. (04:30) Crews returned from his minor league rehab assignment and made a diving catch in RF in his first fielding opportunity. Crews also singled in his first Big League At-bat since May 20th.(08:30) Jose Tena was not sent down and rewarded the Nationals with a go-ahead 2-run single in the bottom of the 7th for a 3-2 lead. Tena has not played much since returning from AAA and many expected that he would be the odd man out when Crews returned.(11:40) Another good outing for Brad Lord as he lasted six innings. Lord has reached the back fringe of the crowded NL Rookie of the Year race with his solid season thus far.(15:00) Miguel Cairo decided to use Jose A. Ferrer in the 8th against Philadelphia's heart of the order. This led to Cole Henry pitching the 9th to earn his first career save.(22:40) Nathaniel Lowe, the highest paid player on the team, was designated for assignment to make room for Dylan Crews. This surprised many, but if you listen to our episode recapping the win in Kansas City, Mark laid out why it was becoming increasingly unlikely that Lowe would be back in Washington in 2026. Lowe was acquired last December from Texas in exchange for reliever Robert Garcia. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 804Lile's Late RBI Lifts the Nats + Crews Returning

The Nats won a wild one on Wednesday afternoon as they prevailed 8-7 at the Royals to avoid the sweep. Mark (From KC) & Al convene after Washington immediately jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Kansas City tied it up in the bottom of the 8th. Daylen Lile's RBI single scored Luis Garcia Jr. to take the lead for good in the top of the 9th.(05:00) The Nationals are planning on activating Dylan Crews on Thursday night when their home stand begins vs. the Phillies. Who will be the odd man out when Crews joins the roster?(14:10) Nathaniel Lowe hit a Grand Slam in the top of the 1st and it was the first time they've had one since Jesse Winker did so last April. CJ Abrams also homered and Brady House collected a pair of hits.(18:30) Lowe is the highest paid player on the team and the franchise has an option to tender him in the off-season. There is a good chance that Lowe is not retained for 2026.(20:45) The bullpen had a great day as they combined to only allow one run in five innings of work. Clayton Beeter was surprisingly tabbed to pitch the bottom of the 8th before Jose A. Ferrer came in for a four-out Save.(23:30) Jake Irvin did not pitch well after inheriting a five run lead. Irvin's 1st inning struggles continued as he gave up two runs and his ERA in that frame is 10.08 for this season. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 803Parker Beaten by the Royals

The Nats fell 8-5 on Tuesday night in Kansas City in a game that saw a bizarre pitching line. Mark (From KC) & Al examine Mitchell Parker's outing where he only allowed two hits, but ultimately gave up five runs. It was Parker's 13th loss of the season and his WHIP is the worst among qualifying pitchers in all of MLB (1.46).(06:00) James Wood continued his latest surge with a RBI double and a single. The double had an exit velocity of 118MPH; one of the hardest hit balls in recorded team history.(11:45) Dylan Crews is expected to come back within the next few days and that will require someone being sent down to Rochester. Will Jacob Young's Bobblehead Night on Saturday play a factor in the decision?(19:30) Comparing Riley Adams & Drew Millas as the pair have been the two catchers for over a month. Adams had two hits on Tuesday night and his OPS is at .608.(25:00) Jake Irvin will take the mound on Wednesday to try and avoid the sweep. Will Brady House get his first start of the series? Ep 802Cavalli Gives up 4 Runs in KC Loss

The Nats lost 7-4 on Monday night at Kansas City as they begin a new phase of the road trip. Mark (From KC) & Al open with Cade Cavalli's first road outing where he allowed four runs in five plus innings of work. Cavalli gave up a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 6th to mar his pitching line.(12:30) Josh Bell hit his 15th homer on the season early in the game for a 2-0 Washington lead. James Wood had his 4th consecutive good game as he had a pair of singles and Paul DeJong also went deep while hitting 3rd in the order.(17:15) Daylen Lile had a single and a double while playing RF in the defeat. Lile is in danger of being sent back to AAA when Dylan Crews returns this month.(21:35) Jackson Rutledge gave up the decisive 2-run HR to Kansas City's 9th hitter, Kyle Isbel. Will Rutledge still be with the organization at Spring Training?(27:00) MLB Pipeline came out with their new rankings and Eli Willits is atop the Nats list. LHP Alex Clemmey was just promoted to AA-Harrisburg and is 5th on the list, behind Travis Sykora, Jarlin Susana, and Luke Dickerson. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 801Gore Whiffs 10 Giants in Shutout Victory

The Nats cruised past the Giants 8-0 on Sunday afternoon for their first series win since the trade deadline. Mark (From San Francisco) & Al have another all positive set of topics to dissect as both James Wood & MacKenzie Gore had big days.(04:10) James Wood continued his strong weekend from the lead-off spot as he had a pair of RBI doubles. Wood however did strike out three times.(07:30) MacKenzie Gore really bounced back from Tuesday's disastrous outing. Gore struck out 10 in six innings of work and it was the first time he had threw double digits strikeouts since June 14th.(11:05) The offense was very hot with 17 hits and Josh Bell collected three of them. Bell this summer has elevated his OPS to .731, almost 100 points higher than it was at the end of June.(16:15) Luis Garcia Jr. was out all weekend due to a back issue, but it remains to be seen if he is headed to the IL.(20:00) Cade Cavalli will the take the mound on Monday in Kansas City. It will be Cavalli's first ever start on the road in the Big Leagues. (21:45) Dylan Crews played all weekend in Nortfolk for Rochester and it is unclear in when he return to the Nationals. Ep 800Wood Homers in San Francisco Win

The Nats hit three homers in Saturday afternoon's 4-2 victory at the Giants. Mark (From San Francisco) & Al meet after James Wood leadoff the game with his first home run in a month. Wood is now up to 25 homers on the season and also added a RBI double in the top of the 6th.(07:00) Paul DeJong and Josh Bell went Back-To-Back in the top of the 3rd to put Washington up 3-0. The offense totaled 11 hits in a rare successful game against a lefty starter (Carson Whisenhunt).(11:15) Should Wood stay in the top spot of the lineup? Shoehei Ohtani & Kyle Schwarber would be comparable examples of power hitting lead-off men.(14:05) Brad Lord had another solid outing as he only allowed one run in six innings while striking out five Giants hitters. Lord's ERA this year is 3.28 while flipping back and forth between being a reliever and a starter.(21:15) Jose A. Ferrer recorded his first save of the season and second of his career. Ferrer took over the closer role after Kyle Finnegan was dealt away and this was his first save opportunity after the trade deadline.(28:30) MacKenzie Gore will take on Justin Verlander in Sunday afternoon's series rubber match. Gore is coming off a terrible start vs. the Athletics where he gave up eight runs in just three innings on the mound. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 799Shutout for the 11th Time This Year

The Nats were blanked for the second straight day in Friday night's 5-0 loss at the Giants. Mark (From San Francisco) & Al examine the new look lineup that saw James Wood double out of the lead-off spot.(06:45) Brady House went 0 for 4 while slotted 3rd in the lineup, House has been up for nearly two months and his OPS so far is a disappointing .585.(09:00) Dylan Crews is with Rochester this weekend as his rehab stint continues. Will he join the Nats in Kansas City on Monday?(12:10) Jake Irvin immediately fell behind 2-0 but settled down to allow three runs in just over five innings of work. This leads to an examination of the potential Opening Day 2026 starting rotation.(21:30) Shinnosuke Ogasawara recorded seven outs and lately Miguel Cairo has been using him in a long reliever role. Ep 798Wood's Slide Continues in Shutout Defeat

The Nats were blanked 6-0 on Thursday afternoon by the Athletics to end a dismal 1-5 homestand. Al & Tim convene to marvel at how bad Washington has been in day games this year; a starling 14-34 thus far.(06:30) James Wood struck out twice and went 0 for 4 in the loss. Wood only gathered two hits all homestand and his OPS this season has dipped to .832.(14:05) Mitchell Parker gave up four runs in just five innings of work. Parker's ERA is an alarming 5.43 and his 1.48 WHIP is the worst in the majors among all qualified pitchers in the majors. Should the Nationals send Parker down to Rochester?(24:20) We respond to listener emails. Please send your thoughts to [email protected] if you would like for us to read it on air.(33:45) It is unclear when Dylan Crews will end his rehab stint in AAA, but there is a decent chance it could come during the upcoming two city/ six game road trip. Ep 797Cavalli Impresses in Walk-off Win

The Nats got a much needed feel-good win on Wednesday to snap their six game skid. Al & Mark gather after the 2-1 walk-off victory over the Athletics where Cade Cavalli took the Navy Yard mound for the first time in almost three years. Cavalli did not allow a run in just over four innings of work where he struck out six batters.(11:00) Jose A. Ferrer pitched the top of the 9th and after the game Miguel Cairo declared him the closer for the rest of the season.(16:15) CJ Abrams committed a throwing error, but came through with a walk-off single to score Robert Hassell III. The ball beat Hassell home, but was misplayed by the Athletics catcher Tyler Soderstrom. Mark had the perfect vantage for the final sequence and gives his opinion on the decision by Ricky Gutierrez to send Hassell in to score.(22:45) Riley Adams homered in the bottom of the 6th to break up Jeffrey Springs' Perfect Game bid. The conversation leads to Keibert Ruiz, who has been on the Concussion IL since for over a month now.(28:00) We had a successful Nats Chat Hangout at Walter's prior the game. Stay tuned for info on the End of Season Party in October.(30:30) Josh Whetzel, the Voice of Rochester, gives his weekly update from AAA. Dylan Crews is currently rehabbing with the Red Wings. Ep 796Gore Clobbered in 6th Straight Loss

The Nats were crushed by the visiting Athletics 16-7 on Tuesday night for their 6th consecutive defeat. Mark & Al run through all the awful totals as the Nationals were routed by the last place team in the AL West.(03:20) MacKenzie Gore had a nightmarish start that only lasted three innings. Gore immediately fell behind 5-0 in the top of 1st and ended up giving up eight runs. Gore's ERA is now 4.29 and he did not record any strikeouts in the outings. The lefty's ERA was at 2.89 back on June 15th when he was on his way towards the All-Star Game.(16:00) The bullpen had to go six innings and allowed eight runs in the process. Andry Lara had a brutal outing as he allowed six runs in his two innings of work. The 'pen has an unthinkable 5.98 for ERA this season.(21:05) The offense has been outscored 54-20 in this homestand. Eleven of those 20 runs have come in the bottom of the 9th when the game is already well out of hand; including four in the bottom of the 9th on Tuesday. James Wood had another game without a hit, but did not strikeout in the loss.(22:45) Cade Cavalli will return to the Navy Yard for the first time in three years on Wednesday evening. Cavalli has struggled mightily in Rochester, but there are not seemingly any better options. Cavalli's only Nats start came in August 2022 before he got hurt for the rest of the season. Ep 795Stomped & Swept

The Nats were clobbered by the Brewers 14-3 on Sunday afternoon for their 5th straight loss. Mark & Al point out that Milwaukee is an organization worth emulating as they continue to win every year despite not having a high payroll.(09:00) What is the bigger need for the organization? Pitch depth or offensive firepower?(13:30) James Wood's summer swoon continued as he went 0 for 3 w/ 2 Ks while in the DH spot. Wood's slugging percentage has now dipped below .500 for the season.(16:05) Brad Lord gave up three runs in just five innings of work. Lord lasted 92 pitches and his ERA this season now sits at 3.42.(19:20) The bullpen was torched, including allowing seven runs in the top of the 7th. Zach Brzykcy was responsible for six of them and Ryan Loutos after the game was sent down to AAA.(27:45) Who will start for the Nats on Tuesday vs. the Athletics? Could it be Cade Cavalli? Ep 794Hassell Homers in Loss to Milwaukee

The Nats lost 8-2 to the visiting Brewers for their fourth consecutive defeat. Al & Tim dig into another rough start for Jake Irvin where he allowed five runs in four innings. Irvin immediately allowed three runs; continuing his recent trend of not pitching well in the top of the 1st.(08:30) Shinnosuke Ogasawara tossed three scorless innings before giving up a pair of runs in the top of the 8th. It is unclear if the lefty will stay in the bullpen or move into the starting rotation.(11:45) Robert Hassell III got the start in CF and promptly homered to cut the early deficit to 5-2. Hassell spent the past month and a half in AAA-Rochester.(15:00) Wood went 0 for 4 with a pair of controversial strikeouts in the loss. Wood had a brutal July as he struck out in 46% of his at-bats last month with only two homers.(24:05) We read your emails, please send your thoughts to [email protected]. Ep 793Embarassed by the Brewers

The day after the Trade Deadline did not go well for the Nats in their 16-9 loss vs. visiting Milwaukee. Mark & Al discuss the rough start to August as Washington gave up a franchise most 25 hits on Friday against the Brewers.(5:30) Mitchell Parker was hammered in allowing eight runs off of 12 hits. Parker's ERA has now moved up to 5.35 in what is increasingly becoming a rough year for the lefty.(16:45) Shinnosuke Ogasawara was called up on Friday and is currently part of the bullpen. Will the open spot in the rotation go to him or the struggling Cade Cavalli, who has a ERA of 6.09 in AAA.(22:00 Robert Hassell III is back in the Big Leagues and came through with a pair of hits after replacing Jacob Young mid-game.(26:10) James Wood entered Friday night 1 for his last 42 against non fastballs. Ep 792TRADE DEADLINE SPECIAL: Gore Remains Among Other Moves

The Nats made a few more trades in the closing hours of the MLB Trade Deadline on Thursday. Mark & Al convene after the Nationals made five trades in total and three in the final 24 hours. They in total shipped away six players and five of them were on expiring contracts (all but Alex Call).(04:45) MacKenzie Gore was not traded away and will remain with the Nationals. Did Mike DeBartolo have full authority to deal away the lefty from ownership?(08:00) Michael Soroka was dealt to the Cubs on Wednesday in exchange for two prospects. Soroka was working off of a 1- year $9 million deal.(09:10) DeBartolo came off very crafty in the Alex Call deal with the Dodgers. L.A. sent back two top 20 prospects in exchange for Call who was battling for playing time in crowded and young outfield.(15:45) Kyle Finnegan was traded just before the deadline unlike last summer. Finnegan was the longest tenured National and now will pitch for the first place Tigers.(19:00) Who will be the new closer? Could it be Konnor Pilkington?(22:05) Josh Bell was not moved and Al wonders if Bell will continue to get DH at-bats at the expense of younger players in the final two months.(25:45) Mike DeBartolo had a very busy July after taking over as the Interim GM. The Nats were crushed 9-1 by the Astros on Wednesday afternoon to end their road trip at 3-3. Mark (From Houston) & Al start with the trade that was made prior to the game which sent relievers Andrew Chafin & Luis Garcia to the Angels. Washington in return received a pair of prospects in 1B Sam Brown and LHP Jake Eder. (06:00) A discussion about the crowded outfield entering the final hours of the MLB Trade Deadline. As Dylan Crews is expected to return in August, could Jacob Young or Alex Call get traded?(09:45) MacKenzie Gore had an awful outing as the sport was very much paying attention to the lefty on Wednesday afternoon. Ep 790Short Outing for Soroka Prior to Loss

The Nationals three game win streak was snapped in Tuesday night's 7-4 loss at the Astros. Mark (From Houston) & Al open with Michael Soroka's likely final outing in a Washington uniform. Soroka allowed a pair of runs in under four innings of work as many expect him to be moved ahead of Thursday's deadline.(12:00) Stunningly, yet again there was a runner's interference call along the 1B line during a Nats/Astros game in Houston. This came during Andry Lara's brief but rough relief outing as he allowed four runs. Most importantly, for the first time the call went in Washington's favor.(19:00) The offense struck out 14 times and they have done so an astonishing 33 times in just the past two games. The slumping James Wood had a single and Luis Garcia Jr. clubbed his 9th homer of the year.(21:45) Dylan Crews began his rehab stint in AAA-Rochester. When Crews returns to Washington, what will the corresponding move be in the outfield?(25:30) MacKenzie Gore will take the mound on Wednesday afternoon in the series finale as all eyes across the Baseball world will be tilted towards the lefty just one day of the deadline. Ep 789Adams Homers in 3rd Straight Win but Travis Sykora Needs Surgery

The Nats won their third straight on Monday, but pregame were dealt tough organizational news. Mark (From Houston) & Al begin with injury news as the Nationals highest rated pitching prospect Travis Sykora is likely out for 2026 due to Tommy John Surgery. Sykora was promoted to Harrisburg last month and only made a pair of starts in AA before getting hurt.(13:30) Brad Lord had a solid start in Washington 2-1 victory on Monday night. Lord only need 59 pitches to toss just over five innings of work vs. the Astros.(18:00) Konnor Pilkington picked up the win in another impressive outing out of the bullpen. Kyle Finnegan notched his 20th Save of the season as Thursday's Trade Deadline approaches.(20:30) James Wood was given the day off as Miguel Cairo noted that he could use some extra rest after a busy All-Star Break. Wood has been mightily slumping recently as he struck out ten times in Minnesota.(21:15) The Nats struck out 19 times as a team yet came out on top. The offense though did come up with major moments as a Nathaniel Lowe double scored Josh Bell from 1st and later Riley Adams hit the go-ahead solo homer in the 7th. Ep 788Irvin Shines in his Hometown Return

The Nats took their second straight series after winning Sunday's rubber match in Minnesota. Mark & Al examine the Nationals 7-2 victory that saw Bloomington, MN native Jake Irvin impress on the mound in seven innings of work.(08:00) Konnor Pilkington & Kyle Finnegan each tossed scoreless frames to preserve the big lead. Pilkington has already been on the mound four times since getting called up from AAA earlier this week.(12:45) CJ Abrams homered on the first pitch of the game and filled the box score from there. Abrams stole three bases on Sunday and this game serves as a great example of all that Abrams brings to the table.(15:15) Josh Bell picked up three hits to continue his red-hot July. Bell is leaving the quite the impression to opposing GMs just ahead of Thursday's MLB Trade Deadline.(18:30) James Wood went 0 for 4 with all strikeouts on Sunday and this weekend he struck out ten times in the series. Wood showed a rare case of his frustration when arguing with the home plate umpire following one his Ks. He has struck out 134 times this season, second to only Detroit's Riley Greene.(22:25) Dylan Crews will make a rehab start this Tuesday night with Rochester. Crews has been out since May 20th due to an oblique injury.(26:00) The Athletic reports that the Cubs has interest in MacKenzie Gore. What would it take for the Nats to deal the lefty?(30:45) Jim Callis from MLB.com provides a brief scouting on Eli Willits, who the Nationals picked at #1 overall a few weeks ago. Ep 787Rosario Traded After Win in Minnesota

The Nats dealt Amed Rosario to the Yankees shortly after beating the Twins 9-3 on Saturday night. Mark (From Minneapolis) & Al begin with the Nationals first trade this month as it could be a busy few days until Thursday's deadline. New York sent back RHP Clayton Better & OFer Browm Martinez.(08:00) The offense woke up against a very good pitcher in the Twins' Joe Ryan. They scored nine runs off of 12 hits and hit a pair of homers in the process (Garcia Jr. & Call).(11:15) Jacob Young left the game with a contusion on his index finger after a bunt attempt. Alex Call replaced him and played great in front of many friends & family on-hand from nearby River Falls, WI.(16:00) Drew Millas took advantage of his start by having three hits and stealing a base. Miguel Cairo said on Saturday that Millas is likely to be behind the plate about once a series.(18:00) Mitchell Parker earned the win in almost six innings of work. Parker has pitched well coming out of the All-Star Break and this outing dropped his ERA below the 5.00 threshold.(20:30) Luis Garcia retired four batters in the victory and Mike DeBartolo's first move is looking good so far. Could he be traded at the deadline? Garcia was acquired on July 8th and has already taken the mound for Washington nine times. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 786Shutout Again

The Nats were shutout for a second straight game in Friday night's 1-0 loss in Minnesota. Mark (From Target Field) & Al examine how the offense has already been blanked nine times this season. It is a particularly head scratching stat because they have scored double digits in ten of their victories this year.(07:00) Is Darnell Coles (Hitting Coach) back on the hot seat even after a managerial change?(10:05) MacKenzie Gore only allowed one run, but did walk six Twins in just five innings pitched. Gore had more wild pitches (two) than hits allowed (one) and had just four strikeouts in the outing.(17:00) Luis Garcia reached 100+ MPH against the final batter he faced. Washington acquired Garcia this month and might be able to trade him before the deadline.(21:15) Dylan Crews is with the team this weekend in Minnesota. Crews has been out for over two months with an oblique injury and has yet to make a rehab start in the minors.(26:00) The Nationals went slightly over slot when signing their 2nd round pick (Ethan Petry). It is clear in hindsight that the organization had a direct plan entering this year's Draft. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 785Shutout Instead of Sweeping

The Nats were blanked 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon by the visiting Reds. Al & Tim discuss Nick Lodolo's complete game shutout, the 3rd time the Nationals have allowed a starter to go the distance against them this season.(09:00) Jacob Young made an incredible catch above the wall to rob a homer in the top of the 8th. It will definitely be on the short list for best catches this MLB season.(14:45) Michael Soroka had a solid outing, but did hit three Cincinnati batters. This could have been his final Washington start as he is expected to be traded before next week's deadline.(18:00) How many trades will the Nats make by next week? Tim thinks there will be at least three moves by Mike DeBartolo.(20:25) Jackson Rutledge allowed a pair of late runs and his ERA has ballooned to 6.55. Ep 784Bell Homers as Lord & the 'Pen Step Up

The Nats beat the Reds 6-1 on Tuesday night in D.C. for their 2nd consecutive win. Mark & Al note that the Nationals are now a game away from their first series sweep since mid-May in Baltimore.(04:10) Josh Bell crushed his 13th homer of the season as he continues his hot month. Bell is widely expected to be traded by next week and his surge is well timed for the organization.(07:30) Riley Adams continued to play well while Keibert Ruiz is on the IL. Adams had a 2-run single and also a threw out a runner to end the top of the 3rd.(09:00) Brad Lord had a solid outing as he returned to the starting rotation for the first time since May 6th. Lord only allowed one run in four innings of work off of 50 pitches.(15:30) Konnor Pilkington, fresh off being called up from AAA, impressed in his two innings of scoreless work. Pilkington took over in the 5th, struck out the side in the 6th, and earned the win. It was not his MLB debut as he briefly pitched for Cleveland a few season ago. The corresponding move was Mason Thompson getting sent down to Rochester.(25:15) Washington goes for the sweep on Wednesday afternoon. Ep 783Nats Hold Off the Reds

Wood had a single, double, two walks, and a pair of runs scored.(06:00) Josh Bell doubled and homered as his OPS in July is up to .968. Will Bell get dealt by the deadline?(12:10) Daylen Lile knocked in three runs on a triple to put Washington up 4-0 in the top of the 1st. Irvin tossed three scoreless innings, but allowed five Cincinnati runs in the top of the 4th. Irvin's ERA has climbed over a run in the past ten starts.(22:45) It was a tough night for the bullpen, especially Kyle Finengan. The Nats were pounded 8-1 by the Padres on Sunday afternoon to drop the rubber match. Al & Mark convene after MacKenzie Gore got roughed up in his first start after the All-Star Game. Gore immediately gave up a 1st inning Grand Slam to Xander Bogaerts and then was pulled in the top of the 3rd.(10:30) James Wood singled to end an 0 for 20 stretch. Wood has struck out in 40% of his at bats this month and had 5 Ks over the weekend series.(16:30) Nick Pivetta dominated the Washington offense for the 2nd this summer. Pivetta is having a very good season and his ERA is below 3.00 (2.81).(19:00) The bullpen ironically had a great afternoon as three pitchers combined for over six scoreless innings. Jackson Rutledge pitched the most on Sunday as he almost lasted four innings; while striking out a trio of Padres.(22:10) Yohandy Morales has been hitting well in AAA and the hosts wonder if he will get called up this season. We continue our friendly debate on whether or not Lowe is having a good season.(21:30) Eli Willits, the number one overall pick in last week's MLB Draft, was officially introduced after signing with Washington. Willits broke the salary record for a high school prospect, but it is well below the slot value.(26:00) Hear what Interim GM Mike DeBartolo answered in response to Mark's questions about the upcoming Trade Deadline. Finnegan only recorded one out while giving up a grand slam to Manny Machado and his ERA is now up to 4.37.(14:30) C.J. Abrams 2-run homer tied the game in the bottom of the 8th, but the Nats ran themselves out of a chance to the take lead. Willits had an eye opening OPS of 1.514 this past high school season.(15:15) Handicapping the SS depth within the organization. Last year Washington drafted Seaver King, a shortstop from Wake Forest, who currently is playing with AA-Harrisburg.(22:00) The Nationals were swept in Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon hours before the MLB Draft began. The 8-1 loss sends the team 20 games under .500 into the All-Star Break. For comparison sake, the organization was just two games below .500 entering June.(27:45) C.J. Abrams was a late scratch due to shoulder soreness. This was significant because his injury info was released mid-game; a strong departure from protocol under Mike Rizzo. James Wood was given is first gever ame off on Sunday as he prepares for Monday night's HR Derby in Atlanta.(36:00) Jackson Rutledge struggled by allowing four Brewer runs while recording just one out. The Nats let it slip it away on Saturday afternoon in their 6-5 walk-off loss in Milwaukee. Al begins with a quick preview of Sunday night's MLB Draft where the Nationals hold the #1 overall pick. Kade Anderson, pitcher from LSU, is the likeliest selection in the top spot.(04:00) Kyle Finnegan inherited a 5-3 lead, but very quickly allowed three Brewers runs. The final blow came on a Caleb Durbin single after Andrew Vaughn's 2-run double tied up the affair.(07:00) Shinnosuke Ogasawara only lasted four innings and shortly after taping was optioned to AAA-Rochester.(10:10) Finnegan's blown save ruined the intial storyline that belonged to Brady House. The rookie hit his first two career MLB homers and the 2nd one gave Washington a 4-3 lead in the top of the 8th.(13:15) MASN reports that James Wood & MacKenzie Gore will fly to Atlanta on a team provided private jet for the All-Star festivities. Riley Adams, who likely will start most days for the time being, homered in the defeat.(07:45) Mitchell Parker did not pitch well as he allowed seven runs in less than five innings of work. Mark (From St. Louis) & Al convene after the Cards' Miles Mikolas continued his dominance over Washington's offense.(05:30) C.J. Abrams lost track of how many outs there were in the top of the 8th and it led to an inning ending double play. Mark (From St. Louis) & Al recap the victory that saw three homers, including the 24th of the season by James Wood.(05:30) MacKenzie Gore earned the win as he only allowed one run in six innings of work. Gore will be able to pitch in the All-Star Game since he will not take the mound this Sunday in Milwaukee.(12:45) Six of the Nats nine hits were for extra bases on Wednesday night. Nathaniel Lowe gave Gore an early cushion by hitting a 3-run HR in top of the 1st. Amed Rosario also went deep and he is worth monitoring as a potential trade chip at the end of the month.(19:00) Luis Garcia, the newly signed reliever and not to be confused with the 2B, made his first appearance with the team in the bottom of the 9th.(24:10) Trevor William's season is over and is to be determined which kind of surgery he will have due to his partial UCL tear. It is possible that he will undergo "Tommy John" surgery, which would put his 2026 season in doubt.(27:00) A discussion about Keibert Ruiz's 2nd trip this summer to the concussion IL.(30:30) Reaction to Mike Rizzo's Wednesday morning radio appearance on 106.7 the Fan. Ep 774Cairo Loses Debut as Interim Skipper

Tuesday marked a new era for the franchise, at least in the interim. Mark (From St. Louis) & Al examine the pregame comments by Miguel Cairo & Mike DeBartolo. Cairo was elevated from Bench Coach and was emotional when discussing his long time friend Davey Martinez. The Nationals lost his debut 4-2 at the Cardinals after a lengthy rain delay.(05:10) DeBartolo made it clear that the organization will be revamping how it uses data and technology while he is in charge. He has a busy first month on the job as the Draft is this weekend and the Trade Deadline is at the end of July.(17:10) Addressing the elephant in the GM room.... what to do with MacKenzie Gore?(22:30) Cairo has been an interim manager before as he took over the Chicago White Sox in the final few months of the 2022 season. Among the minor changes Cairo made, Bob Henley will return to D.C. as a MLB Field Coordinator.(26:20) James Wood nonchalantly made a leaping grab over the LF fence to rob the Cardinals of a homer.(31:00) Jake Irvin took the loss as he allowed four St. Louis runs in six innings of work. Mark mentions that it was another instance of Irvin showing declining velocity on the mound.(32:45) Keibert Ruiz was moved back to the 7-Day Concussion IL and Drew Millas returned from AAA-Rochester. Ep 773Rizzo & Martinez Fired After Getting Swept

A few hours after a 6-4 loss to Boston, the Nats fired GM Mike Rizzo & Manager Davey Martinez. Mark & Al react to the major organizational moves as it is truly an end of the an era. Rizzo became the permanent GM in 2009, Martinez became skipper after 2017, and they were the GM/Manager combo for the 2019 World Series championship.(13:15) Mike Rizzo told the Washington Post that he had to "navigate that ownership group for 20 years", which leads little to the imagination. Mike DeBartolo has been elevated from Assistant to interim GM and the managerial position will be addressed on Monday's off-day.(19:00) Rizzo was masterful at trades, but not so much at drafting.(24:45) Would any manager have had positive results with this roster the past few years? This was Davey's first Managerial job and he is by far the longest tenured skipper in team history.(32:20) Ownership uncertainty is front and center in the search for the next GM. Will some qualified candidates shy away from this job?(39:40) Will Rizzo & Martinez get these same positions with other teams in the future?(44:00) Washington begins a six game road trip on Tuesday night in St. Louis after these major changes. Mark points out just how poor the Nationals infield team defense has been this season. Parker stayed in the game and finished his day with three straight scoreless frames.(18:30) Keibert Ruiz had a RBI ground out in an at bat that felt very predictable. The offense was put in a tough hole as it was behind 9-0 before the bottom of the 9th.(24:00) Mason Thompson has been activated as he battles back from a 2nd Tommy John surgery. Zach Brzykcy was sent down to AAA-Rochester in the corresponding roster move.(26:45) Derek Law was moved to the 60-day IL and it seems quite unlikely that he will pitch this season.(32:00) Shinnosuke Ogasawara will start on Sunday for the Nats instead of Cade Cavalli. The Nationals traded him that offseason to the White Sox as part of a deal that landed Adam Eaton.(06:00) Michael Soroka had an ugly stat line as he gave up seven runs off of nine hits in just four+ innings of work. Soroka was pulled in the 5th while struggling against Boston's collective 3rd at-bats.(16:15) The Nats went 0 for 5 w/ RISP in the loss. As part of the roster movement, Drew Millas was optioned to AAA-Rochester.(18:00) Trevor Williams was placed on the 15-day IL one day after his start vs. Detroit due to a right elbow sprain. Then 'pen combined to allow ten runs in under three innings of work.(10:30) Ryan Loutos was the choice to pitch the bottom of the 7th when trailing 4-3 instead of Cole Henry. Loutos then proceeded to not retire any of the six Dodger hitters he faced.(12:10) Kyle Finnegan never appeared in this series despite many other relievers taking the mound multiple times.(19:30) Michael Soroka had ten strikeouts through five shutout innings, but then was charged with three runs while briefly pitching in the 6th. This continues a familiar pattern of Soroka's box score not being indicative of how effective he was for the most part.(25:00) The Nationals scored four runs off of Kike Hernandez in the top of the 9th as LA surprisingly put a position player on the mound while ahead by ten runs. Hernandez was unable to finish the game and a reliever had to be summoned anyhow.(30:15) Nathaniel Lowe's 3-run HR gave the Nats their 3-0 lead until it fell apart in the 6th. Lowe has 13 HRs, but his OPS is at .699 and that causes the hosts to wonder if Lowe is having a good season or not. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 760Wood, Lowe, & the Nats Smack 5 Homers in L.A. Win

The Nats slugged five homers on Saturday night for a 7-3 win at Dodger Stadium. Mark (From L.A.) & Al marvel at James Wood as he crushed his 21st homer of the season; which is tied for 4th most in the NL. Wood's 1st inning majestic shot went an estimated 451 feet.(06:00) All of the top four Nationals hitters cleared the fences, with Nathaniel Lowe doing it twice. The offense totaled ten hits and eight of them were for extra bases.(12:30) Keibert Ruiz went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles. It is the first time since April 22nd that Ruiz had multiple doubles in the same game.(15:00) Washington pitchers combined for 11Ks in the victory. Jake Irvin had seven of them while not issuing any walks in his outing.(19:30) Jose A. Ferrer retired all five batters he faced and Mark points out how inconsistent he can be on the mound.(24:10) Kade Anderson, star LSU pitcher, threw a complete game shutout on Saturday night at the College World Series. Anderson is projected by some to go to the Nats with the top overall pick at next month's Draft. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 759Gore Struggles in Dodger Stadium Defeat

The Nats lost on Friday night 6-5 at Dodger Stadium to open their nine game West Coast Road Trip. Mark (From LA) & Al discuss MacKenzie's Gore subpar's outing where he gave up five earned runs in over five innings of work. Gore issued four walks and only recorded four strikeouts, keeping him behind Boston Garrett Crochet for the MLB lead in strikeouts.(09:45) The offense slugged a trio of homers but was only 1 for 8 w/ RISP. Riley Adams ended an 0 for 32 slump in emphatic fashion with a solo HR in the top of the 5th to cut the deficit to 4-2.(18:00) Luis Garcia Jr. had a clutch pinch-hit 2-run double to trim the Dodger lead to 6-4 in the top of the 7th. Amed Rosario got the nod at 2B (and homered) and Garcia replaced Andres Chapparo at DH for the pinch- hit opportunity.(21:10) Paul DeJong had four hits on Friday night in his rehab assignment with AA-Harrisburg. It is looking like DeJong will serve as an utility infielder for Washington as Brady House is now occupying 3B.(23:40) A quick look at what we know about the contractual situations for both the Manager and GM. Ep 758Wood Walks-off the Losing Streak

The Nats finally snapped their long skid and it all came on the back of James Wood in the 4-3 win over Colorado in 11 innings. Al & Tim discuss the burgeoning superstar as the 22-year old went deep twice and knocked in all four runs. Wood is up to 20 homers and he is tied for 5th in the NL.(14:30) Trevor Williams had a decent outing as he only allowed two runs in just over five innings of work. The bullpen stepped up by only giving up one Rockies run and Cole Henry came through with two clutch strikeouts in the top of the 6th. Jose A. Ferrer also pitched well as he had two punch outs while recording five outs.(17:15) Davey Martinez got emotional in his postgame press conference and it stemmed from a Wednesday night phone call from Keibert Ruiz.(23:20) The Nats begin their West Coast road trip at Dodger Stadium on Friday evening. MacKenzie Gore will take the mound opposite Clayton Kershaw in the series opener.(29:00) Part 2 of Tim's conversation with Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, about the legendary "Cool Papa" Bell. The Nats dropped their 11th in a row on Wednesday night in a 3-1 loss to the visiting last place Rockies. Al & Mark make immediate note that they are just one game away from the tying 2008 franchise mark of 12 consecutive defeats.(06:00) James Wood's RBI double in the bottom of the 7th was the only extra base hit of the evening for Washington.(09:45) Mitchell Parker allowed a leadoff double, but did not give up a run in the 1st inning. Parker only gave up one run off of a solo homer in six innings of work.(15:00) Reaction to Mike Rizzo's Wednesday morning appearance on "The Sports Junkies" on 106.7 the Fan. The GM gave Davey Martinez a vote of confidence and often cited the 2019 World Series title as part of the rationale. ***Audio courtesy of 106.7 the Fan(31:10) Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, joins Tim to talk about Cool Papa Bell. Wednesday at Nationals Park was Negro Leagues Night and Bell was inducted into the franchise's Ring of Honor in 2010.
