Ep 258Game 81: Soto Exits Early in Losing Seesaw Affair
The Nats continue to be tormented by the Marlins as they fell 7-4 in extras. Mark & Al recap a hectic final few innings that saw the lead change hands multiple times in the final few innings. Tanner Rainey was one pitch away from the save, but instead his struggles continued as he gave up a lead changing 2 run HR. Is the 9th inning not for him?(16:20) The narrative of this game changed shape many times as Washington was being no hit by Pablo Lopez until Josh Bell got a hit in the 7th inning. This leads to a discussion on the pros and cons of trading Bell before the deadline.(26:52) Erick Fedde had a solid start as he lasted six frames, putting his ERA at 4.29. The hosts wonder if there will be a contender interested in Fedde's services before the deadline. How many trades will Mike Rizzo make?(34:20) Juan Soto left the game in the 5th due to left calf tightness and will get a MRI. How concerning is this? Should we expect him to miss the late morning July 4th game?(37:30) On July 3rd, 2021 the plan for postgame fireworks turned into a dud. The Nats lost 5-3 Saturday to Miami for a 3rd straight defeat. Mark & Al begin with the pregame news that GM Mike Rizzo and Manager Davey Martinez had their 2023 options picked up. Was this news surprising or largely expected? The hosts explain why this was done in midseason.(20:54) Jackson Tetreault was not able to make it a third consecutive solid start as he issued five walks in four innings.(26:24) Tres Barrera had a RBI double in his first Big League plate appearance for the season. Mark & Al bring you up to speed on the catcher that has been down in Rochester this season.(35:10) We continue our series of looking back at July 2021 when everything changed for the Nationals. Ep 256Game 79: Gray Struggles in Loss + Soto Contractual Talks
The Nats lost 6-3 to Miami to open up a four game series on a holiday weekend in D.C. Al gives kudos to Mark for his pinch hit performance on Friday night as he filled in as color commentator on MASN. They then evaluate Josiah Gray's outing; where he allowed six runs in just under six frames. How much time off should he have between starts?(12:10) Keibert Ruiz had an impressive game both with the bat and the glove. Ep 255Game 78: Bizarre Ruling Costs the Nats in Wacky Loss
The Nats missed a rare opportunity for a sweep as they lost 8-7 to the Pirates in a game that saw a very bizarre play to conclude the top of the 5th. Mark & Al try to unravel all that went into the decision to grant Pittsburgh a run despite the Nationals turning a double play with one out. Did the umps get it right? They certainly took their time in making their decision,(13:09) The bottom of the 5th was also notable in a negative way for Washington as they made yet another out at home plate. This was due to Keibert Ruiz not knowing that there were two outs and not running on contact.(18:24) The offense produced 16 hits, but left ten men on base. Josh Bell did his part though as he reached base five times, including three hits. His average is up to .319 on the season, one of the best in the National League.(25:20) The run of great pitching came to a halt on Wednesday as Paolo Espino and the bullpen all struggled during the afternoon. Paolo immediately gave up two runs and was lifted in the 5th inning. Two members of the "A" bullpen also had forgettable days, in Carl Edwards Jr. and Kyle Finnegan. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 254Game 77: Corbin Dominates & Yadiel Comes Up with the Big Hit
The Nats beat the Pirates 3-1 for their third straight win and their sixth victory in the past eight games. Mark & Al this time have plenty of good things to say about Patrick Corbin as he struck out a dozen Pirates in eight innings of work. It ties a career high for Corbin in terms of strikeouts, the last time he whiffed that many was back in the 2019 NLCS.(13:32) Tanner Rainey ran into some trouble, but ultimately earned his 11th save of the season. Who do you currently trust more... Rainey or Finnegan?(21:05) Yadiel Hernandez came off the bench for the game winning hit in the bottom of the 8th. It is two straight days that Washington could only bring in a runner in scoring position in the penultimate inning. Mark explains how Ehire Adrianza's presence led to the decision to have Yadiel pinch hit.(29:07) The Nationals had two minor league starts of import on Tuesday evening. Anibal Sanchez made a brief rehab start in Rochester and former 1st round pick Jackson Rutledge tossed eight Ks in Fredericksburg. Al wonders how much of a chance Anibal will have to enter the Major League rotation. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 253Game 76: Franco's Blast Rallies the Nats
The Nats came back on the Pirates 3-2 as Maikel Franco hit a game winning 2 run HR in the bottom of the 8th. Al discusses how they struggled with runners in scoring position all night until Franco came through late as the Nats have now won five of their past seven games. The boys ultimately stranded ten runners on base in the victory.(11:20) Erick Fedde allowed two runs in five frames, keeping the team in it despite exiting with a 2-0 deficit. It goes down as a quality start, which the staff has recorded in seven of the past eight games. The bullpen stepped up with four scoreless innings, including the notable decision to pitch Kyle Finnegan in the bottom of the 9th as opposed to Tanner Rainey.(23:10) Davey Martinez was named to the coaching staff for next month's All Star Game. This seems like a gesture from Atlanta's Brian Snitker to recognize Martinez for having missed the opportunity to manage the 2020 affair. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 252Game 75: Tetreault Keeps it Rolling in Series Clincher
The Nats hung on 6-4 in Texas to win a weekend series for the fourth time in five attempts. Al & Mark (Live From Globe Life Field) begin with praise for Jackson Tetreault who only allowed one run in the victory. The Nationals have had a quality start in six of the past seven games and have gone 4-3 in that stretch.(09:45) Tanner Rainey came in to get the Save as a 6-1 lead in the 9th was trimmed to a slight two run edge after Francisco Perez struggled mightily. Mark explains why Perez was tabbed to start the 9th despite not having appeared on the mound in over a week.(15:05) Juan Soto reached base five times on Sunday, four of which came via walk. Soto is now up to a MLB leading 61 walks on the season, 13 more than second place.(23:40) Nelson Cruz had a busy weekend and in the finale he had two hits and three RBIs. A Dallas based reporter tweeted out on Sunday that the controversial call from Saturday involving Cruz was mishandled by MLB. How could such a mistake occur? Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 251Game 74: Gray Dazzles But the Rangers Walk It Off
The Nats lost a heartbreaker to the Rangers 3-2 as Adolis Garcia hit a walk-off HR against Kyle Finnegan in the bottom of the 9th. Mark (Live from Texas) and Al take a glass half full approach to Saturday as Josiah Gray struck out nine in seven innings, only allowing four hits in the process. Does it seem like he's elevated his game this past month?(11:30) Finnegan got the nod in the 9th instead of Tanner Rainey. Is he taking Rainey's spot as the ace reliever on the staff?(16:30) Washington was on the wrong end of a controversial call in the top of the 8th that potentially cost them the go ahead run. Why wasn't Nelson Cruz's hit reviewable? Mark relays what the team was feeling about the play afterwards.(24:15) Juan Soto doubled, but also immediately hit into a 5-6-3 double play. We revisit our ongoing conversation about Soto's struggles so far this season. He is shocking 7 for 56 with runners in scoring position this year. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 250Game 73: Paolo & Bell Lift the Nats in Texas
The Nats topped the Rangers 2-1 in their first ever trip to Globe Life Field. Mark (Live from Texas) & Al tip their caps to Paolo Espino, who had another solid outing, as he didn't allow a run until the 6th inning. Why exactly was Paolo buried on the pitching depth chart for so long?(10:35) Josh Bell collected three hits in the return to his hometown, including the go ahead RBI single in the 8th inning. Bell's average is up to .302, one of only ten players in the NL above the desired threshold. Vote Bell for the All Star Game Early & Often!(17:30) The Nationals committed another out at home on Friday, for a staggering 11th time this season. This brings attention to new 3rd Base Coach Gary DiSarcina, who has many questionable calls so far this year.(34:01) GM Mike Rizzo spoke with Mark and the other beat reporters before the game and had updates on Stephen Strasburg, Brady House, Cole Henry, and Cade Cavalli. Ep 249Game 72: Nats Shutout as Austin Hays Hits for the Cycle
The Nats were blanked 7-0 in Baltimore in a rain shortened affair (6 innings). Al & Tim begin with the bewilderment of some of the decisions behind the two rain delays that occurred on Wednesday. Why did it take so long to call it a night? Austin Hays of the Orioles hit for the cycle despite it not being a full game, the 3rd player to do so against the Nationals.(07:45) Patrick Corbin struggled yet again as he was handed his 10th loss of the season and only lasted four innings. Tim takes advantage of his pinch- hosting assignment to lay out what he hopes the organization does with Corbin.(20:45) Mike Rizzo had semi eyebrow raising comments on 106.7 The Fan about Lane Thomas being a long term cog for Washington. Ep 248Game 71: Fedde & 'Pen Shutout the O's
A refreshed Nats blanked the Orioles 3-0 for a 2nd straight win. Mark (Live from Baltimore) & Al evaluate Erick Fedde's big night as he tossed six shutout frames at Camden Yards. The bullpen was just as good as well as Kyle Finnegan, Carl Edwards, Jr., and Tanner Rainey all threw scoreless innings.(12:03) Lane Thomas homered on Tuesday while hitting ninth in the order. Thomas is hitting .310 so far in the month and Mark explains what likely led to the decision to put in that lineup spot.(22:05) A Ryan Zimmerman memory submitted from a listener. Ep 247Game 70: Tetreault's Father's Day Gem Ends All the Skids + Interview on Ray Brown
The Nats ended all sorts of losing streaks by beating Philadelphia 9-3 as they had lost eight in a row overall, twelve straight to the Phillies, and thirteen consecutive against NL East foes. Mark & Al tip their caps to Jackson Tetreault who earned his first career victory in only his second career start. Will he get another Major League start?(09:15) Juan Soto capped a frustrating week on a positive note with a crucial three run homer, his 14th of the season. The forgettable home stand included banging his knee against the dugout, being called out for not 100% hustling down the line, and multiple hit-less games. He currently leadx the Majors with 55 walks on the season, nine higher than Kyle Schwarber.(21:08) We analyze the two errors the Nationals committed on Sunday. Lane Thomas could not make a grab in CF and Keibert Ruiz made a poor throw while attempting the back pick play that is becoming his signature move. Are teams becoming wise to his tendency?(35:08) We continue our budding Juneteenth tradition of celebrating an all-time great Homestead Gray. Ray Brown was a superb pitcher who pitched for the Grays in the 30's and 40's and we hear tales of his exploits from Bob Kendrick. Bob is the President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 246Game 69: Zimmerman Ceremony is a Home Run Despite Extra Inning Loss
The Nats lost in 2-1 to the Phillies in 10 innings, but the focus of Saturday came Pregame as Ryan Zimmerman's #11 was retired. Mark & Al applaud the ceremony as it seemed to hit all right notes, aided by perfect weather and sell-out crowd in Washington D.C.(20:35) Josiah Gray threw six scoreless frames as he in a pitcher's duel with Aaron Nola. Gray was well rested after he missed his Monday start due to rain. It is notable that this was the first time Gray pitched in front of a large crowd at Nationals Park since he was dealt here.(31:20) Juan Soto was thrown out trying to steal to end the 1st inning, which was curious because it came with red-hot Josh Bell up to bat. Could this be related to being called out on Friday for not hustling down the line?(37:02) Luis Garcia committed another error on Saturday, as the experiment of him playing shortstop continues. Ep 245Games 67 & 68: Controversial Call Caps A Doubleheader Sweep by the Phils
The Nats lost both ends of Friday's Doubleheader in D.C against Philadelphia to extend their losing streak to seven games. Al & Mark begin with the final inning of the long day, as Luis Garcia was controversially called for obstruction that led to a 2 run Philly lead in the 10th. Mark spoke with the umpire Dan Iassonga afterwards and hear all that went into the decision.(18:45) Josh Bell had a monster day as he homered three times on Friday, four in the past two days. Bell's average is currently up to .299 and seems to be the likeliest candidate to represent Washington in the All Star Game.(22:02) Juan Soto is 0 for 12 so far this series and his average is stunningly down to .216. Davey Martinez called out Soto after Game 1 for not running out a double play. What exactly is going on with Soto this season?(30:07) Paolo Espino took a no-decision for his five inning effort in Game 2. He overcame early walks and shaky defense behind him to exit the evening with an ERA of 2.29.(46:12) On Saturday Ryan Zimmerman's #11 will be retired and there are many planned festivities. Ep 244Game 66: Soto Returns, but Ugly 3rd Inning Ensues
The Nats were trounced 10-1 by Philadelphia for their 5th consecutive defeat. Mark & Al do the best they can to piece together the disaster that was the 3rd inning on Thursday evening as the Phillies scored seven runs in the frame, aided by a pair of Washington errors. Why is the defense so shaky this season?(08:01) Patrick Corbin didn't make it out of the 4th inning as he exited with a very unusual pitching line. He allowed nine runs, but only two were considered earned. Both HRs that he gave up were to his former teammate Kyle Schwarber, who certainly enjoys Nationals Park in June.(27:04) Cade Cavalli had solid bounce back outing in Scranton on Thursday and it leads to a discussion on if all the shuffling of the pitching staff could lead to an imminent promotion.(30:30) Listener submitted email that compares the Nationals rebuild effort to the past work divisional foes such as Atlanta have done. Ep 243Game 65: Soto Sits Again & Atlanta Brings Out the Broom

Adding injury to insult, Juan Soto missed a second straight game due to a the contusion on his right knee.(14:47) Victor Robles had a blatant TOOTBLAN to end the 7th inning. Why does he so often make mistakes on the bases(21:03) Erick Fedde threw over 100 pitches in defeat as his main purpose on Wednesday was to eat up innings to help an exhausted pitching staff. Mark then lays out what the rotation will look like for the Phillies series; which will be five games in a four day span.(31:45) A listen submitted email spurs a conversation on Mike Rizzo's future and what a realistic timetable looks like for the rebuild. The Nats lost 10-4 to the surging Braves, who have won 13 in a row. Al & Mark discuss how the pitching woes keeping piling up for Washington as Jackson Tetreault was thrusted into his MLB debut against a red hot Atlanta. The original plan this week was Josiah Gray on Monday and Stephen Strasburg and Tuesday, and it ended up being Earsmo Ramirez and Tetreault, respectively.(16:10) Juan Soto did not play for the first time this season due to the right knee contusion from Monday evening. Will he be back in the lineup on Wednesday?(21:02) Strasburg was placed on the 15 day IL due to a stress reaction to the ribs. Is it related to his TOS surgery? Mark explains the injury, what it means, and the bigger picture options for the World Series MVP.(32:54) There was multiple pitchers who were called up from AAA on Tuesday, but Tyler Clippard was not one of them. Al is baffled as to why Clippard hasn't been promoted to the Nationals. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 241Game 63: Gray Scratched After Rain, & Soto Exits in the 9th
Monday was an awful/no good day for the Nats from start to finish as they lost 9-5 to Atlanta. Mark & Al update the latest on Juan Soto as he missed his final at bat after banging his knee in the dugout prior to the top of the 9th.(05:14) Pregame it was announced that Stephen Strasburg is back on the IL due to discomfort after his Saturday bullpen session. We still don't know the results of the MRI, but it seems difficult to maintain an optimistic outlook. He had been previously scheduled to start on Tuesday night.(18:40) Josiah Gray did not start because just before 1st pitch there was a sudden rain delay and the game did not begin until after 8:30pm. Gray had already warmed up just before the rain and so the decision was made to pitch a bullpen game instead. Erasmo Ramirez filled in and made his first start since 2018.(23:20) Jackson Tetreault will take the mound on Tuesday in place of Strasburg. Mark explains the delicate situation Washington is in with their pitching as there is no off-day this week. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 240Game 62: Paolo Takes the Hill, but a Low Scoring Loss Ensues
The Nats lost 4-1 to Milwaukee as the bid for a series sweep came up short. Mark & Al focus on the ten runners that Washington stranded as they went opposite of their instinct to score runs against Brewers starter Jason Alexander. Al was mildly incredulous at Juan Soto's 1st inning bat attempt. What did Davey Martinez have so to about it?(16:01) The Nationals used a tandem start on Sunday as Paolo Espino lasted until the 4th and then Evan Lee bridged the game into the late innings. Paolo took a hard luck loss as he only allowed 1 run in 3.2 IP. At one point in his start, his ERA dipped as low as 1.84! Will these pitchers be used again in Friday's doubleheader?(23:05) Cole Henry pitched on Saturday night in AAA and struggled as he allowed four runs in three innings. Mark lays out a possible timeline for him to be promoted to the Big Leagues later this season.(26:10) Longtime Washington nemesis Andrew McCutchen slugged a 9th inning HR. Mark & Al start with the mildly surprising news postgame that Paolo "The Secret Weapon" Espino will get his first start of the season on Sunday as the team seeks its first sweep of the season.(04:32) The heart of the order took center stage on Saturday as Juan Soto, Nelson Cruz, and Josh Bell connected on back to back to back HRs that gave Washington a seven run lead. These three hitters were responsible for all eight RBIs during the afternoon.(12:34) Luis Garcia had a mixed bag during the victory as he had three hits, got caught stealing, and was charged with an error. Since being called up ten games ago, Garcia is hitting .359. Has he met expectations?(24:05) Patrick Corbin had a good outing until his pitching line received a few blemishes in the top of the 7th. Hear analysis of Corbin's start that for the most part was a positive.(33:04) Mark gives an update on Sean Doolittle and Anibal Sanchez's rehab. Nelson Cruz not only returned to the lineup, but had four hits (including his 455th career HR) in the process.(08:40) Keibert Ruiz homered among his three hits and picked off another runner at first base on a snap throw to Josh Bell. Lane Thomas also had three hits and has been white hot so far in June.(25:35) Cade Cavalli struggled Friday night in St. Paul as he allowed four runs in 5 IP. Al points out that a successful start might have been his final AAA outing, but now Mike Rizzo likely needs to see a few more starts.(31:40) Our debut of "Where Are They Now" as former closer Matt Capps sends in a voice memo to update Nats fans on what he is up to today. Ep 237Game 59: Strasburg Strikes Out Five in Return to the Mound
The Nats lost 7-4 to the Marlins as Stephen Strasburg pitched for Washington for the first time in over a year. Mark (live from Miami) and Al dissect his up and down start. Do they focus more on the seven runs he allowed or the five strikeouts he threw? What to make of fastball velocity?(20:45) Nelson Cruz was a late scratch due to a stiff back and will have a MRI soon. The lineup card meanwhile puzzled Al mightily as Ehire Adrianza was placed 2nd in the order (Cesar Hernandez was given a much deserved day off). Why not move up Luis Garcia higher in the lineup? Lane Thomas reached base three times in the lead-off spot and he already has five multi hits games in June.(30:31) Paolo Espino threw a scoreless bottom of the 8th and his ERA is 2.03. HE HAS YET TO PITCH THIS SEASON WHILE THE NATIONALS ARE AHEAD! As the team is in a stretch with no off-days for awhile, he might start a game during the upcoming homestand,.(34:47) We get a preview of Virginia Tech's first ever trip to the NCAA Super Regionals from diehard listener Akul Mehra. Ep 236Game 58: Miami Prevails in Extra Despite Gray's Scoreless Outing
The Nats lost 2-1 in 10 innings as all the runs scored came in extra innings. Mark (Live from Miami) and Al recap the very busy 9th and 10th innings, which concluded with Tanner Rainey blowing a save opportunity. Mark explains the unusual situation where a replay at the plate did not go Washington's way.(17:10) Josiah Gray threw five scoreless frames as he was in quite the pitchers duel with Sandy Alcantara, who shutout the Nationals over nine innings. Gray struck out six and has lowered his ERA by over a full run in his past three starts.(27:20) Keibert Ruiz had a busy evening as he had a RBI, threw out a runner trying to steal, and was central in the extra inning replay at the plate. Did he block the plate or was it a bad call?(37:30) Stephen Strasburg is finally taking the Nats mound on Thursday night for the first time in over a year. Ep 235Game 57: Strasburg Returns Thursday + Adon Gets Slammed in Miami
The Nats three game win streak came to a screeching halt in a 12-2 loss down in Miami. Al & Mark (Live from Florida) though do not begin with the game, but with the pregame confirmation that Stephen Strasburg will take the mound on Thursday night at the Marlins. He has not pitched for Washington since June 1st of last season.(13:06) Joan Adon was hit hard early and often as he allowed eight runs in three plus frames. His ERA is above 6.00 right as Strasburg is returning to the rotation and so it begs the question... Will Adon be sent down to the minors? Who starts on Sunday?(23:45) Luis Garcia homered on an evening that the offense did not do much against Edward Cabrera, as his tater traveled a distance of over 400 feet. What are reasonable expectations for Garcia at the plate now that he has seemingly been called up for good? Lane Thomas had two hits on Tuesday while occupying the second spot in the order and our antennas are on to see if he quietly is taking over in CF for Victor Robles.(35:55) Josh Whetzel, the voice of the Rochester Red Wings, gives an update on the Nationals AAA affiliate after their very busy weekend that saw Stephen Strasburg, Cade Cavalli, and Cole Henry all succesfully take the mound. Ep 234Game 56: Ruiz's Dramatic Pickoff Throw Seals a 3rd Straight Win
The Nats held off the Reds 5-4 to win their 3rd straight game and to take the series. Mark & Al open with Keibert Ruiz's fantastic defensive play for the final out, that allowed the Nationals to hang on and for Steve Cishek to notch the Save. Hear the explanation of how advanced scouting led to the execution of that snap throw to 1st Base,(12:04) Luis Garcia had a RBI single and swung a hot bat in Cincinnati. However, there were more question marks about his play at shortstop, mainly in the bottom of the 9th. Should he have thrown the runner out for the final out?(23:06) Patrick Corbin earned the win as all three runs he allowed came in the 1st inning. Al points out many of the lefty's advanced stats as we are two months into the season. It is starting to look more and more likely that he will be promoted to Washington at some point this season. He walked as many as a he struck out, and Al points out his alarming walk rate per nine innings.(16:07) Paolo Espino yet again was used in mop up duty as he threw a scoreless bottom of the 8th.
