This despite the fact that the federal government could easily appropriate funds to continue the SNAP program through November. This is a result of the federal government shutdown which will soon be the longest shutdown in U.S. history.    This shutdown is doing damage to American’s faith in our own government. With Democrats poised to take control of the House in 2026, what responsibility will they have to restore the trust deficit?    And in the meantime, wtf do WE do?!? The Perfect Neighbor debuted this month as the #1 film on Netflix, bringing attention to Stand Your Ground laws through the story of Ajike “AJ” Owens. AJ was killed in 2023 by her neighbor Susan Lorincz, a woman known throughout the neighborhood as “The Karen." On this special episode of Native Land Pod, host Angela Rye is joined by attorney for the Legal Defense Fund, Janai Nelson. Ms. Nelson joins us just after leaving the Supreme Court, where she argued a case which could have radical implications for the Voting Rights Act and redistricting across the country: Louisiana v. Callais.    In 2024, Louisiana was found to be in violation of the VRA and was forced to redraw their congressional map. The original map created only one majority Black district out of six total districts, in a state where roughly 1/3rd of the population is Black. Ms. Nelson and the Legal Defense Fund argued in favor of the new map, which created two majority Black districts, in the Supreme Court back in March of 2025.    The highest court has called them back to hear arguments AGAIN, a move rarely taken, except for with the most consequential of cases (Roe v. Wade, Brown v. Board, etc.). She was fired last week after writing a post on social media that said she wasn’t going to mourn Charlie Kirk, a white man who promoted violence and vitriol. She did not celebrate his death or condone political violence. The Washington Post fired her for having a hot take, which is LITERALLY HER JOB as an opinion writer.    Our second guest is a White House Correspondent for AURN (American Urban Radio Networks), Ebony McMorris. In a viral clip, Trump refused to answer a question from Ebony during a press Q&A, and repeatedly insisted that she was “obnoxious,” reminiscent of previous incidents with Black female reporters like Yamish Alcindor, who seem to trigger the president simply by existing. Is this what the first amendment looks like for Black women?    One of you submitted a question about Jimmy Kimmel which ties nicely into our theme today, and tied to all of it is the sanctification of the life of racist rightwing commentator, Charlie Kirk. There was a House Resolution honoring Kirk that passed this week which many Democratic lawmakers voted “yes” on, including those in deep blue districts. She holds nothing back and our hosts speculate her criticism of Biden will NOT be taken lightly by the establishment.      Trump has not explicitly said that he’s going to run for a third term, in violation of the 22nd amendment. However, his team is selling “Trump ‘28” hats, and he hasn’t ruled it out. Knowing Trump, why aren’t those in power taking this possibility more seriously?    Israel tried to kill Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar (a close U.S. ally) while those leaders were meeting to discuss a proposed Gaza ceasefire, eliminating the possibility for peace. Meanwhile, the U.S. military blows up a boat in the Caribbean that the Trump administration claimed was running drugs without providing evidence. These extrajudicial killings undermine international law and American prestige.    This is not the first time Israel has sabotaged U.S.-led negotiations with airstrikes, eliminating the possibility for peace and straining U.S. relationships with its Mid-East allies.     And of course we’ll hear from you! Among other baffling details, the Mayor’s order calls for a “Safe and Beautiful Emergency Operations Center.”    Rapper Cardi B kept it classy when the judge read the “not guilty” verdict in the civil lawsuit brought against her by a former security guard. On episode 93 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum are forced to remind all of us that slavery was, in fact, bad.    Fitness trainer and TV personality Jillian Michaels was on Abby Phillip’s CNN show recently making some wild claims about how slavery wasn’t that bad, wasn’t just committed by white people, and wasn’t actually that big of a part of the country’s founding because “only 2%” of Americans owned slaves… We have so many questions y’all–like why this person with no journalism or history experience featured on a CNN panel–but first we have to address some of her specific claims and misleading “facts.” We’ll hear from Nikole Hannah-Jones herself (the creator of the 1619 project).     Our guest, Sherrilyn Ifill, gives American democracy a “D.” But, she says, our problems started long before Trump. She joins the NLP hosts to identify the weak points of our democracy and what building blocks might remain in a post-Trump era. Then, a deep dive into how integration led to the draining of public funds, and whether or not the courts will hold as a co-equal branch of government. Angela Rye is joined by Texas State Representative Nicole Collier LIVE from the state house floor.    The Texas House Speaker has directed state troopers to follow Democratic representatives, the ones who fled the state to quash a vote on redistricting earlier this month, until they vote on new electoral maps later this week. For refusing this Republican surveillance, Rep Collier has been detained on the house floor, where she’s been told she must remain until the vote is held, or she accepts police escort. The debate was shocking, participants called themselves fascists, and told Mehdi, a naturalized citizen, to “get out” of the country. Mehdi reflects on the debate, the surprise and trauma of it, and what it says (and doesn’t say) about modern conservatives. Egged on by the Trump administration, we are now on the verge of an all-out gerrymandering war. Redistricting (redrawing maps) normally happens at the end of each decade. Trump demanded that Texas redraw their map now to add more Republican seats and the Texas GOP obliged. In response, Democratic state reps have fled Texas to prevent the new maps from being voted on, and governors of blue states like California and New York have threatened to change their state laws to allow more partisan gerrymandering in favor of Democrats.   Tiffany Cross is meeting with the president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. State Rep Jolanda Jones   Texas State Representative Jolanda Jones is one of dozens of Democratic state lawmakers who have had warrants issued for their arrest by Texas Governor Greg Abbot. Angela Rye talks with Rep Jones while she is literally on the run.   Democratic lawmakers have fled the state in a hail-mary bid to prevent their Republican colleagues from redrawing the Texas election maps to give themselves as many as five additional seats in Congress. Oak Bluffs, a town on Martha’s Vineyard, has been a gathering place for the Black community for more than 100 years. Folks have called the clothing line “elitist;” the jackets and blazers cost well over $500. Should we denounce this celebration of Black culture just for being elitist?    Maybe, maybe not. More importantly, we do not need white businesses to validate Black culture. The Black community spends 10’s of billions of dollars on apparel every year, and just a fraction of that goes back to the Black community, even though WE are the source of so much American style. Let’s talk about how we change THAT.    Plus, what is happening in Gaza right now is beyond horrific. Angela Rye interviews Rodney Taylor’s fiancée, Mildred Pierre.    Rodney Taylor didn’t know he was undocumented until he was 17. Earlier this year, I.C.E surrounded his car and arrested him in front of his family. They told him that he’ll be deported back to Liberia without seeing a judge or receiving a hearing, even though he hasn’t been back to Liberia since he was two years old. At 46, he lives in Georgia where he works as a barber. Taylor is a father of seven children who he shares with his fiancée, Mildred. They were engaged shortly before his arrest.    This is not the first time that Rodney Taylor has had his life wrongly turned upside down by the justice system.
