What if the biggest threat to your spiritual life isn’t sin… but boredom?
In this episode, we launch the New Year with a resolution you definitely didn’t see coming:
Don’t Be a Zombie. Be Like Mary.
Father Jim Benz Homily
The Epiphany of the Lord: 1/4/26
We talk about zombies (the spiritual kind, not the ones chasing brains), a classic 1968 horror movie you probably didn’t expect to hear about in church, and why walking through life on autopilot might be the quietest way to lose your joy. From cell phones and airplanes to air, blood, and the miracle that you even exist—turns out we’re swimming in God’s love… even when we forget to notice it.
Then we turn to Mary, the original master of paying attention. While everyone else is talking, Mary is reflecting, treasuring, and refusing to become spiritually numb. Her secret? Wonder, awareness, and a heart that knows how to pause.
It’s thoughtful, a little funny, and surprisingly practical—because if you’re not careful, you can be alive, busy, and still be a zombie.
And it all comes down to a New Year habit so simple it fits in a whisper: “Thank you, Lord.”
