MYSA Natural Wine and Wonder Women of Wine partnered up to host a panel on the new generation of Winemakers and were joined by panelists Martha Stoumen, of Martha Stoumen Wine, Rachel Signer, of Pipette Magazine and Persephone Wine, Bree Stock MW of Constant Crush, and Eric Moorer of Domestique Wine to discuss the natural wine industry, where it is going, how to be a part of it, and how we can all be better consumers.

Natural and/or biodynamic wines are focused on creating wine in its purest form without additives or taking things out of the wine. It uses grapes that are dry farmed, pesticide free, and made This inherently means that these wines are far more sustainable than conventional wines and are a perfect fit for sustainably-minded folk, like those practicing zero waste! Wine as a subject can be an incredibly intimidating conversation to engage in. Part art, part science, it leaves so much to subjectivity, and yet there are thousands of grapes, terms, regions, production methods and other things to know so that you can form those opinions! If you are generally interested in wine, I highly recommend the WSET program. Going through it gave me the basis I needed to understand what I was drinking and to vocab needed to express it. However, the discussion of natural wine was non-existent when I did my coursework (though I’ve heard they added a section on orange wine) so as an additional resource, here are the 25 terms you are most likely to hear in reference to natural wine so that you can be prepared to understand what everyone is talking about and describe what you’re finding in the wine. Natural wines, as we all likely know at this point are impossible to officially define because there is no certification for it (like USDA Organic), nor is there one consistent definition of what it is even amongst those of us importing and distributing it! Thus, it is tough to really know if a wine is made naturally, BUT there are a few great ways of finding out when you’re in a store or searching online to have higher confidence that a wine is made naturally. A few weeks ago we ventured up to Alsace to meet a producer that we were confident was a great fit for our portfolio! We’ve been wanting to add another mainly white wine producing area for awhile and with Nic’s Riesling obsession, it seemed like a perfect fit! Arriving in mid-October, the leaves were turning, but harvest was still ongoing for many of the winemakers!
