Thom’s journey from combat soldier to comedy stage is nothing short of remarkable. After enlisting in the U.S. Army at just 18 years old, Thom served as a Communications and Civil Affairs Sergeant within the Army’s Special Operations Community. His military career came to an abrupt end in 2003 when a sniper’s bullet struck the back of his skull during combat operations in Iraq, just four days after crossing the border. Despite his injuries, Thom bandaged himself up and completed his 12-month tour—a testament to his incredible strength and dedication. Following his medical retirement in 2005, Thom discovered that comedy didn’t just change his life—it saved it. He channeled his experiences into stand-up comedy, eventually creating The GIs of Comedy Tour in 2010, a groundbreaking comedic troupe that has performed across the United States and in nearly two dozen countries, bringing healing laughter to military and civilian audiences alike. We’re heartbroken to share that Todd Snider passed away on November 14, 2025, at age 59. In honor of this legendary singer-songwriter, storyteller, and beloved figure in Americana music, we’re replaying our unforgettable conversation with Todd. Todd Snider was more than a musician—he was a rambling troubadour, a cosmic comic, and someone who could distill life down to its essence with words and song. From his breakthrough 1994 debut “Songs for the Daily Planet” to his critically acclaimed “East Nashville Skyline” and his final album “High, Lonesome and Then Some,” Todd created a body of work spanning over three decades that captured the humor, heartbreak, and honest truths of the human experience. In this episode, Todd shares stories about learning from his songwriting heroes—John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, and Kris Kristofferson—and how those mentors shaped his craft.
