Podcast #169: Getting Your Schedule Under Control
January 12th, 2018: In today’s show I continue with #LivingWithIntention so that we all stay on track through the month of January creating new habits, being true to ourselves and our goals and fulfilling those New Year's Resolutions. It all starts with Getting Our Schedule Under Control! How did you do last week with your homework? Did you really think about how you spend your time and how you can better implement these three things in your life? #LivingWithIntention #BeTrue2Jesus #BeTrue2Self I feel that as we incorporate these goals into our lives we will start to see our purpose in this life or if we know what that is already it will become more focused. If we are still on this earth, it is because God is not done with us yet. We have a greater purpose in this life! Some weeks are going to be harder than others as life is, going to happens BUT every week we can all hone ourselves back in together here! The unique thing about this journey we are on is that we have the ability to influence so many people. Do you want to be a positive or negative influence? We have the power to change lives and change the world on this journey. Podcast #152: What Is A GMO?
July 14th, 2017: In today’s show I educate on GMO's. There is a lot of controversy over GMO's – some say they will take us into the future and provide our food supply, others like myself who are seeing the awful affects are saying they are poison. You need to decide, but it is TIME that YOU educate yourself! My dear friend Rhonda at The Farmers Lamp shared a GREAT article Beyond The GMO Propaganda. It is important that you read this and educate yourself. You decide! Everytime I eat ANYTHING with GMO's I get horribly sick! For those of you that are unable to stream podcasts or would rather have the opportunity to read, below you will find the transcription of today's podcast: You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes. You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes. Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio show where we are homesteading traditionally 100% off grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow here's your host; Tammy Trayer. Tammy: Hey everyone, glad to have joining me today and welcome to my north Idaho wilderness we’re out walking and I’m out with my favorite children today and getting some peace, some exercise and giving them the same; I saw it during our walks and through running around is good for them and so for me as well [chuckles]. Many of you know that I was on the healing side of breast implant illness and some of the struggles that I still have even though I have healed for the most part is that I have to be very cautious of certain things: one of which is mould, mould will create auto-immune reactions, for me it causes me to get very sick and I need to be away from [e-maps] which are electromagnetic frequencies which makes living off the grid the absolute best location for me, because we don't have high tension lines and wires and that around our home. However, when I go to town I do get affected by it and it's just one of those odd things that I have to be really cautious of. The other thing I've got to be really cautious of is what I put on and in my body. Meaning topically and what I eat and it brings up the discussion of GMO’s. I say that to many people locally often and it surprises me with the reaction that I get. Many people don't know what a GMO is and I would bet that many of you aren't familiar with GMO’s. GMO's are genetically modified organisms, sadly they are in much of our food today and what that–what genetically modified organisms mean is that it's not something that was handed down from my ancestors, it's not an heirloom seed that was-that's 100 years old and still going strong, it's something that was grown in a lab and that was modified by scientists and there are many perspectives on GMO's. There's one side that's all excited because scientists can continue to provide our food supply. However, they don't test or see the side effects for years and we are now seeing side effects from genetically modified organisms and sadly there's many with blinders on both in our government and in our society that just don't want to acknowledge that our food is a problem but I'm here to tell you our food is a very big problem. Eating for me is extremely overrated, it is the hardest thing I have to do because I have to find organic non GMO foods in our food supply and locally as well which makes it tricky when you live like we do. Not having access to health food stores like the average person does that are only 10, 15 minutes away. The good health food stores are an hour to two hours away from me. So being able to access certain things can be really tricky. However, we have online options such as Amazon and Thrive Market, Zaycon meats, you can access Amazon by going to trayerwilderness.com/Amazon, they have an Amazon pantry or prime pantry as well as just regular prime but there are all kinds of organic options available and you can go to trayerwilderness.com/thrivemarket and trayerwilderness.com/zayconfoods. But the thing that people don't also realize is–okay so corn it's a great example, canola is another example. They're genetically modified seeds, those seeds some of the genetically modified seeds are designed in such a way that when they grow, fertilizers have been genetically incorporated into the seeds. So if an insect eats it and kills it from the inside out drying up its organs and turning them to dust, what do you think that does to our bodies? Soon as I have anything with GMO in it I get sick, my face flares, my face swells with red splotches and I am sick for a lot of days and it's really not a pleasantry. So I got to be very selective on what I eat so now eating out with friends sometimes I tend to-I feel as though I may insult them with their cooking and it's not their cooking, it's just GMO's and even seasonings are flavored with natural flavorings; natural flavorings to
Podcast #151: The Power Of Positive Thinking
July 7th, 2017: In today’s show I talk with you about the Power Of Positive Thinking and how it can affect your life. Simple adjustments daily can impact your life in such a great way and truly it is all a choice! “Be Mindful. Be Grateful. Be Positive. Be True. Be Kind” ~ Roy T. Bennett “The day is what you make it! So why not make it a great one?” ~ Steve Schulte “Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson “Being miserable is a habit; being happy is a habit; and the choice is yours.” ~ Tom Hopkins “The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude.” ~ Oprah Winfrey For those of you that are unable to stream podcasts or would rather have the opportunity to read, below you will find the transcription of today's podcast: You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes. Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio show where we’re homesteading traditionally 100% off-grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow here is your host, Tammy Trayer. Tammy: Hey everyone, welcome to the Idaho wilderness, I'm your host Tammy Trayer and you can find myself and my family at trayerwilderness.com where we educate on our off-grid lifestyle. If you're new to my show, you can go to trayerwilderness.com/mountainwomanradio and you’ll find all the past and archived podcasts as well the show notes and links that were discussed in each of the shows. I’m out here today with my furry children and we’re half way through our 5 mile trek and I thought I would jump on here today and chat with you about the power of positive thinking. People don’t really correlate that with happiness and a peaceful life, but I wanted to talk about it today it was sort of divinely implanted in me today that this is a subject that needs to be discussed with you. So you know people don't realize how one negative thought can turn your entire day upside down. And it's just as quickly rectified positive thinking. You know in life you're going to have situations where things don't go as planned regardless if you're living in an apartment, you're homesteading whatever you're doing; you're going to run into obstacles, things are going to break, things aren't going to work the way you wanted them to, plans are going to fail, goals aren't always going to be met the way you want them to be met but I'm a true believer that everything in life happens for a reason and it’s not always the reasons to the ways we wanted to be, But ultimately it's better than you could have ever imagined. I feel that is my life and I feel it's something I need to share with you guys. There so many people talking about the cup half empty and the cup half full. Half empty being a negative pessimistic person, half full being an optimistic person and seeing the brighter side of things and I just got to the point where I don't care either way, I'm just thankful to have a cup. It's all in perspective, it's all how you think about things, it's all how you view things and it's really easy to get stuck in a rut to get in a really negative place in a funk and sometimes you don't have other people to get you out of that place. However, you don't realize that you alone have the power to turn these things around. You know I was at of a friend's house the other day and I got tied up there longer than I had anticipated being there and I've got a lot on my plate right now and I could have viewed that in such a negative way. I could have been very stressed by that situation but I found it very relaxing, very comforting and just where I was supposed to be and just what God wanted for me because I've been moving at such a pace out of necessity, that I–despite how hard I'm trying, I'm not taking as good a care of myself as I'd like to be. So I feel a bit God orchestrated that and that's how it's supposed to be and I was right where I needed to be relaxing myself and just taking a break. I had a very enjoyable time with my friend and it didn't really hold me up any more than I was already held up. So you need to sometimes just view these situations and the circumstances in a positive way and not allow them to break you. Just like with our equipment out here, we do so much more in a day than the average person and in doing so much more, we also sometimes run into so many more problems and you could do the wows me, God's testing me, I'm in a valley thing, but quite honestly I never feel like God is testing us, I feel that's the enemy trying to get his claws in there and disrupt where you're headed and when you have faith like a giant and your hope and trust is in God and you have a positive mindset and you keep working past all the struggles and you’re unaffected, the enemy loses his stronghold. Not that he won't keep trying, but sometimes, he just
Podcast #150: Harvesting The Summer Bounty
May 30th, 2017: In today’s show I talk about being wise to Harvesting The Summer Bounty whether it is in your garden, in the wild around you or in local u-pick farms or farmers markets. Filling your pantry this time of year is one of the wisest things you can do. Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio show where we are homesteading traditionally 100% off grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow here's your host Tammy Trayer. Tammy: Hey everyone, glad to be with you today again I am in my truck so you may hear the hum of the diesel in the background I hope it's not too bad and upcoming I'll be getting out on the lake and doing some of my podcasts there too. We are working in that area again this year and it has just been so therapeutic for me being able to utilize the track there, to ride my bike and I'm hoping to get out my roller blades and I've been jogging and walking and just taking in the tranquil environment which has been really healthy for me and I'm looking forward to that and I look forward to sharing that with you. But today, traveling again to a customer’s location and I figured I'd jump on here quick and share some information with you. This time of year is a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of some of the wild things available to you such as raspberries, huckleberries, blueberry, cranberries. There's all kinds of different things growing and available in the wild that you can forage which we try to take advantage of as much as possible and additionally some of you may be located in areas where there are farms and farm stands, flea markets–we came from an area that was polluted with such things and was such a blessing and when we relocated to Idaho, it was almost kind of disappointing that those things weren't available to us especially as abundantly as they were back east. So that's spoiled us greatly but there's so much available in the wild and it sickens me sometimes when I am like out here driving around and even along the lake, the lake track used to be a railroad track. So back in the day when people were traveling they'd throw out their apples and their pears, so there are wild apple and pear, plum trees growing all over the place and nobody's taking advantage of all that fruit and a lot of it goes to waste some of the animals eat but a good bit of it goes to waste. So when we were down there last year, we were harvesting some of the apples and pears that we've made jams and jellies with and this year I'm going to be making our family recipe of apple butter which is just amazing. But the reason I want to talk to you guys about this today is to prepare you and get your mind set in the right place so that you don't miss out this summer on all the great things that are available to you. We absolutely love canning and preserving our food and I will be honest I do not have a garden growing this year because of the amount of work on my plate. Right now I am too overloaded and I don't want to put myself back in the position that I am sick again so I have chose not to do anything in my garden because I don't know how frequently I will be able to take care of it, my responsibility is with our construction business and my writing have really taken off and I need to keep myself at a good pace and I have learned what that is. So I don't have a garden growing this year but I do want to take advantage of every opportunity to get my hands on fruits and vegetables that I can. So I am harvesting and forging from the wild and I have a dear friend Gudrun who is in an area with a lot of U-pick farms. Now we are not in an area that offers that and we are not in an area that has really good organic produce available to us and also at a cost that is affordable to us. I'm not opposed to spending money to get good quality food for my family but sometimes it's just so overly pricey that I just can't justify it so I have to go elsewhere to find it and Gudrun is an amazing resource for organic produce, she has helped me do my chili sauce every year–physically help me as well as provided some of the produce for me and it's a really fun time. It's fun to do these things not just by yourself but in the company of friends, good memory making time and I thoroughly enjoyed doing that not only does she help, but Austin the Mountain Boy has been a huge help and we have had so much fun over the years listening to our favorite music, listening to podcasts, just having some really great in-depth conversation. So being able to spend quality time with your family while you're lear

Podcast #148: You Need A Budget
June 16th, 2017: In today’s show I discuss the importance of a working budget for your home or homestead. Without a real good working budget, you really have no solid footing and will always be guessing and getting further in the hole. Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio show where we’re homesteading traditionally 100% off grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow, here's your host Tammy Trayer. Tammy: Hey everyone, welcome. So glad to have you joining me today and I wanted to thank all of you that have been reaching out and expressing how grateful you are that I am back. I'm so glad to be back and I'm thankful to have you listening and glad to hear that I am providing you with resources that are helpful to you and today I thought we would really talk about one that I feel should be like the center of everybody's life and that is having a budget and–it’s kind of sad and today's day and age everybody has credit cards and revolving credit and lines of credit and their houses are mortgaged and its just so much credit and it is so much debt. It is what's being seen and it's truly just hard to exist in that situation–it's so overwhelming and it really takes its toll and people don't even realize it and that's the struggle that I see and the thing that happens is, you–nobody really knows what their extreme debt level really is because they just keep switching from one credit card to the next. And I have to say we were in that scenario for quite a while just because of circumstances but it's not a good place to be and it's not a place to be if you want to get ahead. You know we were building our homestead and things were breaking and we needed to get them repaired in order to move forward, our vehicles were breaking down, without our vehicles we couldn't go anywhere, we couldn't work. So you know you keep investing money and putting more debt on your shoulders and we were all guilty of it. But it's a real refreshing feeling when you finally have a handle on your debt and you know where you stand, you know what your level of debt is regardless how overwhelming it is, you have that final number. And now the thing is to get yourself out of that position you put yourself in and learning–you know we live very frugally, so our needs are so much less than the average person. But you know unfortunately, our equipment often is more pricey. So you know when our backhoe goes down, we have much more pricey repairs than a lawn mower you know. So It's just–the thing is you've got to be aware and you've got to pay attention to where your debt level is you're spending and how frugal you are. You know a lot of people are out purchasing things not out of necessity, not out of need but out of want and it's really easy to do when you go in the stores today. You know I see it when we walk into the stores, you know we aren't shoppers but when we go to the big cities and we hit Walmart or something like that and you see all the big sales and all the new items and you know the new the new slow cooker and the new deep fryer, the new cooking pans that are really pretty and attractive but the thing is I already have all that stuff, so why buy the latest and greatest. You know in some cases it might help you but typically not and you're just getting an additional piece in your kitchen that you've already got, so you're adding clutter which clutter is a whole other ballgame and that in and of itself adds lot of stress and weight on your shoulders too because people don't realize living in a cluttered space is so very overwhelming. So I want to break it out today and give you some resources that will help you to get yourself on track and maybe open your eyes to the fact that you are in a bad situation but you can very easily turn it around and start moving in a more positive direction if you start to be aware–and sometimes it's hard to get your others-your other party, your spouse whether your husband or wife or even your partners you know involved and aware you know-oftentimes the weight of finances is on one person shoulder but in reality it's really important that that weight is on everybody's shoulders-that everybody is aware and that everybody is playing on the same playing field because if you're both not on the same page you’ll never going to get out of the spot and you're going to end up on a treadmill and just keep racing and basically chasing yourself. So it's hard to get your spouse on board sometimes but it's a necessity, they've got to be willing to understand and al
Podcast #147: Are You Too Old To Live Off-Grid?
June 8th, 2017: In today’s show I share with you one of the top concerns and questions we get from our audience, “Are We Too Old To Live Off-Grid?” This is a concern for many wishing to take on homesteading or off-grid living! Listen in and see what is shared… For those of you that are unable to stream podcasts or would rather have the opportunity to read, below you will find the transcription of today's podcast: You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes. Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio, show where we’re homesteading traditionally 100% off grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow, here's your host Tammy Trayer. Tammy: Hey guys, Tammy Trayer-trayerwilderness.com. Hoping you guys are doing good today and enjoying this beautiful day, it's always a beautiful day regardless what the weather is. It’s all what you make it. Today we're going to talk about–this is before I stir the pot here-this is one of the most common questions we get on our website and on our social media and so forth is, “Am I too old to live off-grid? And my answer to that right off the bat is absolutely not. Never are you too old to embrace a dream or live a self sustaining lifestyle and there's nothing stopping you from living off grid based on your age. So let's cover that because in my book “How To Embrace an Off-Grid Lifestyle”- you can find that on Amazon and you can also find my other books by going to trayerwilderness.com/Tammy Trayer . So you can go on there check out the other books I have-but my “How To Embrace an Off-Grid Lifestyle” went live in January of this year 2017 on my birthday actually which was a goal and a met goal, so was excited about that. But in Chapter five is where I really talk about this subject and really, really try to cover things because there's such a misconception of off grid living and this applies to people that want a homestead to, you're never too old to homestead it's all about how you wish to embrace it. You could be 75 and get a couple chickens and live in a on a small little piece of acreage and enjoy your life and live self sufficiently and be very content, It's all how you go about it. Let me explain; I see living off the grid what that means, is that you are not connected to the power grid. You are either pulling in power from another source typically alternative energy or you don't have any power at all which would ultimately be our goal just because-just because we can. But right now we are powering our home with solar power. So the sun provides the energy in the sun on our panels, our panels come into the house and they go through a charge controller and that way if the batteries are already full, It protects the batteries and diverts the energy and once it's in the batteries it goes from the batteries to an inverter which inverts your D.C. power-your battery power is D.C. into A.C. current and goes into your breaker box which is no different than what the grid does. The grid provides AC power to your breaker box as well into your home. So the next question many people have is, “How do you–what happens when the sun goes down?” Well, when the sun's out it’s power my batteries so at night we live off of battery power and we're frugal we choose to be frugal because if your batteries go low you either need Sunder recharge or a generator and if there's no sun you need the generator and the generator takes fuel we just try to be very frugal and eliminate expenses for ourselves and that it's all up to you how you wish to live. If you want to live like you do now on the grid be prepared that you'll probably have to run the generator more often and then we do. But we don't have a lot of the modern day power appliances and at night we’re very simplistic-one light, everybody in the same room, maybe two lights two different rooms but that's max and we don't really do anything that requires power in the evening. So we read books, YouTube, play games, sleep because we're exhausted from all the work we do but the thing is there's a couple things that would deter somebody from living off the grid the way we do. We're out pretty far, I mean we are–we chose to live very traditionally. So we can, we ferment, we harvest our meat, we butcher our meat and we do everything ourselves so depending on your age and what the tasks are, that can get a little cumbersome and a little difficult. But the other thing that is something to consider, is that you can still live the life and maybe just get people to help you. Like for example my son-we have our wood heat and my son cuts up firewood and sells it in the winter months and you know so he delivers the wood and he just unloads it or he can deliver the wood and stack it you know, so there's opportunities out there for you to do some things yourself and others you could pay somebody to do as you age. Now for example living
Podcast #146: How To Recharge Your Batteries
June 2nd, 2017: In today’s show I talk to you about How To Recharge Your Batteries. It is important to take good care of ourselves and to not allow ourselves to get run down. It is also important to do fun things and take time away from all your work to PLAY! To be our best selves we can be, we need to take recharge ourselves. For those of you that are unable to stream podcasts or would rather have the opportunity to read, below you will find the transcription of today's podcast: You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes. Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio, where we are homesteading traditionally 100% off-grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow. Here's your host, Tammy Trayer. Tammy: Hey everyone, I’m glad to have you joining me, this is Tammy Trayer you can find my family and I at trayerwilderness.com. Today we're going to talk about how to recharge your batteries as a parent and as a spouse. We just passed Mother's Day and we’re coming up on Father's Day and both parties need to be celebrated. Either position is an easy one and struggle is we are running that rat race, work in our day jobs, volunteering and getting the kids here and forget to take time out of the week for you and your spouse, you don't have the quality time you want with your kids, and you just start to hit ban out, you have ban out, you start to let those negative voices, that you share with yourself start affecting you and we all go through it. I know I'm not singled out and I hope you feel better knowing you're not alone because it just happens you know. Kids might get tudy, you and your spouse might have a tiff. You know all those things kind of make you feel lesser, inadequate or not a good mom and not a good wife and not a good husband and we go through that negative talk and for starters that's the first thing you've got to curb. And for those of you that have never paid attention to that, these can be really eye opening for you because we're all guilty of it and we're all super good at it and you know you guys know I'm a Christian-that's the enemy in my opinion, digging in and using those negative words to dig–to allow it to degrade ourselves and to degrade our souls and–just put us in a weird spot and we all end up there despite how hard we try to be positive and happy and everything to go right these always never go that way and that's reality. You go through valleys, you go through rough days, you have good days-you know so how do you find that balance and how do you recharge your batteries? For many people that can be a real struggle, I feel kind of blessed because I have good friends, I have good family, I have good spiritual advisers, I have my Bible and I have God and those things really–you know when you really learn how to use some tools and there's nothing wrong with leaning on a friend or a spouse you also were there for we're supposed to be helpmeet and great that men are fixers, so sometimes when you share your struggle with the men, they get a little bit upset because they can't fix it or they try to fix it and you didn't want to fix it you just wanted to listen right? Well got to give him credit for trying to fix it; he's trying to help you but that's his way of doing it. So when you decide to share something with your spouse that's really bothering you, you know maybe you can say to them you know I'm sharing this with you, I know you can't fix it and I don't expect you to mileage kind of just looking for you to listen because sometimes just having that listening ear can be so huge. You know my Mountain boy has been my listening ear. Many times we walk all the time and you know sometimes my dogs, when you're home by yourself and just feeling a little disheveled, you know I'm not the only one. I know other people talk to their animals right? [chuckles]. Anyway, it's just important to express ourselves, it's important to get these things off of our chest, out of our system and by expressing it you're depleting it, you're getting rid of it and oftentimes that's just what you need to do. But it's a process and it’s learning these things. So first of all, if you hear negative talk coming out of your mouth, you know it could be anything, it could be: I'm not a good wife, I'm not a good mom, I look fat, whatever it is, we're all guilty of it, we all have our thing we all have things that bother us about ourselves and that's a process too of becoming whole with ourselves up to a point that we are finding happiness in ourselves and basically seeing ourselves the way God sees us and that's really important and getting rid of that negative talk is huge. That negative talk-you know as soon as you hear it, reverse it turn it around. You know I'm a bad mom, no really I'm not you know Johnny was misbehaving I did what I needed to do he'll love me later and he'll be a better person for it you know. You
Podcast #145: How To Avoid Overwhelm
May 26th, 2017: In today’s show I felt it was important to talk about “How To Avoid Overwhelm”. This is not just for homesteaders or off-griders, but anyone living life! For those of you that are unable to stream podcasts or would rather have the opportunity to read, below you will find the transcription of today's podcast: You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes. Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio show, where we are homesteading traditionally 100% off-grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow. Here's your host Tammy Trayer. Tammy: Hi guys, Tammy Trayer, trayerwilderness.com. Get a little feedback here–there we go. I hope you guys are all doing well today, such diverse weather, I imagine some of you are planting your garden for others of you are just about ready to reap some harvest, we've got snow last week. So pretty crazy, pretty crazy weather but I am out right now walking the dog so hopefully there's a lot of feedback and a lot of noise come in but we’re out walking, it is gorgeous, we are getting spoiled here and there by some really nice days-I’m actually out here in a tank top so go figure. Snow last week, tank top today now it's so crazy. But I wanted to talk to you today about how to avoid overwhelm. it's not just something that happens to homesteaders or people that live off grid it's global and with the pace of today's world, everybody is moving at such a clip. And I'm actually speaking to you today on this because my last three weeks have been beyond insane and a little of which-okay a lot of which I couldn't really control and I had a kind of just roll with. I am a web designer by trade, I am a writer and radio show host by passion and I am the office staff of a construction business out of necessity because my husband's business is just taking off which is an awesome, awesome thing and we are really excited about it. Many of you know our story with my healing process and surgery and no income for six and a half months last year so to be able to turn things around and God just continues to bless us so it's really awesome. And I wanted to share with you how to avoid the overwhelm because so many of us are organization freaks and multitaskers, and people pleasers, and we want our kids to get to everything and to be able to do everything and have opportunities and we volunteer and we don't know how to say no-I've actually overcome that one but it wasn't an easy thing. And even when I guard my schedule which I do very heavily now, because it became a necessity for me to do that when I was sick and really learned different pace. So to know the importance of that pace and having to race like a lunatic the last three weeks it's kind of scary because I don't want to get back in that rat race and I don't I want to end up in that pace. But how do you do it? How do you avoid the overwhelm? How do you not over commit and how do you learn to say no? So that’s why I thought we would talk about today. Learning to say no is really a very difficult thing really because it's stems from fear. And fear is a killer, fear is from the enemy, fear is what holds us back, fear keeps us from enjoying life's best pleasures. So with that being said, how do you do it? Well you need to learn to be strategic and you need to be comfortable in your skin and be comfortable in learning to say when someone asks you, “Can you do this for me?” You need to learn to say, “I would love to.” “Let me check my schedule and I'll get back to you.” Period end of story. And then disengage if you can because we're all really manipulated by pressure and if you're new to learning to say no, it can be very difficult and you feel guilty, but you shouldn't feel guilty. Now by walking away, and by saying those few simple words, let me check my schedule and I'll get back to you, you give yourself three opportunities. One, that you can totally walk away and you can say no. Message back my schedule is full, sorry I can't do that. Two, you can let them know that you'd really like to do but your schedule is really full, is there another opportunity some other time? Or you can give yourself time to really think about it and maybe you would like to do it, maybe it is something that you definitely want to commit to. But you gave yourself a chance to think about it, to pray about it, to talk to your spouse about it-you know so you've given yourself a freedom that most of you don't know because we're so quick to say yes and that was one of my biggest fault because I'm a people pleaser, I love helping other people and it was just something that I was so used to doing. So when you learn that one, that all in of itself will help you to learn to commit your schedule to you, your family, your needs, their needs and keep you from overcommitting that is huge. Now organization is something else that's really, really, important in my opi
Podcast #144: Preparedness Worksheets
May 19th, 2017: In today’s show we dive deeper into preparedness and I offer you my valuable preparedness worksheets to help you on your journey. Download your worksheets here. For those of you that are unable to stream podcasts or would rather have the opportunity to read, below you will find the transcription of today's podcast: You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes. Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio show where we’re homesteading traditionally 100% off grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow here's your host Tammy Trayer. Tammy: Hi everyone, we’ve got a lot of feedback. Here we go, that's a little better, I hope you guys are all doing good today. It is a gorgeous day here in Northern Idaho, we are finally getting some sunshine I just got back from a five mile bike ride along the lake and I feel very blessed to be able to do that, it’s not a common event for me but my Mountain man and the Mountain boy are working this summer up here along the lake so I have the privilege to get out and get a little exercise in a different set of scenery and it is just beyond gorgeous I had a bald eagle take flight five feet away from me this morning it was quite something. Just love it out here, love our wildlife and just love the peace in the tranquility that comes with just living in the middle of nowhere. But I want to jump on today, we are talking about preparedness and preparedness is something that is very broad really on there's a lot of aspects to preparedness and you know you've got people referring to themselves as preppers and people referring to themselves as homesteaders and quite honestly we fit the mold of both of those but we prefer to look at it this way that for us it's a lifestyle of preparedness. Everything we do on a day to day basis is something that's going to initially and completely put us ahead of the game for our future. So whether it's canning food and putting food on our shelves, whether it's building a structure for firewood or fording firewood; whatever the case may be-every day we work and put effort forth in our preparedness efforts. For some people whether that is something that's hard to attain or perceive in your mind on how you can be prepared in every aspect of your life and can also be overwhelming. So before we get started today, I want to encourage you to go to our website at trayerwilderness.com that's T-R-A-Y-E-Rwilderness.com and subscribe to our newsletter in doing so you will receive a bunch of free preparedness worksheets as a handout and a free piece of knowledge from us. We really feel it's important to embrace the preparedness lifestyle and for those of you that struggle with it, it should be a great help in starting to help you wrap your mind around all aspects of your life and where preparedness plays a role. As we've progressed weekly on the podcasts you'll gain more and more knowledge on how you can be prepared in everything in your life and in a day to day basis. The preparedness work sheets include things like a food storage worksheet, medical supply work sheet, essential oil work sheet, herbal pantry work sheet, as well as budgeting and budgeting you know that may throw people off but that's a huge, huge, aspect to preparedness in that you are preparing for your future you are being good stewards of your money and you're also in able to budget things in there to get your preparedness lifestyle and you're prepared needs in check without going over your budget and without putting yourself in debt. So I think these things all go hand in hand and that is why we've created these worksheets; there's other worksheets in there, there are just a few that I've mentioned but it will certainly get you off to a great start. Additionally in the handouts you also find a sheet for recording your medical emergency numbers like we spoke about last week and putting plans in place depending on your needs and your location. So we're going to branch out and talk about some of the things that you could just simply start preparing for and something would be real simple would be just the power going out. now we don't typically have to worry about that we've had–we've been off grid for seven years and have only been really–have never been without power but we were without power from the sun twice. Once was due to a breaker and once was because a Deer had gone through the yard and caught a wire on our solar. So in essence we are all set and always have power one way or the other whether it's through the sun or whether it's through our generator. But for you folks being on the grid you do run into the situation where you do lose power and when that happens the question I have for you today is are you prepared? You know lights go out, power goes out, do you have backup lighting? You know–so these preparedness work sheets will be really helpful that you can sit
Podcast #143: Preparedness For Mother Nature
May 12th, 2017: In today’s show I talk about the need for Preparedness For Mother Nature as well as living a life of preparedness. I also give some examples of how our level of preparedness has helped us in some pretty scary situations. For those of you that are unable to stream podcasts or would rather have the opportunity to read, below you will find the transcription of today's podcast: Welcome to Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes. Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio show, where we are homesteading traditionally 100% off grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow here's your host Tammy Trayer. Tammy: Hello everyone, Tammy Trayer, Mountain Woman radio. It is so good to have you joining me today, it is a beautiful day, I’m out and about and I wanted to share some things with you today, we talked about it last week about Mother Nature and how the panhandle of Idaho has been getting pummeled with rain and snow this winter in the spring and you know the Texas and Oklahoma had so many wildfires it was just awful same time, so it's so diverse and so crazy how much Mother Nature really affects everyone. So let's talk today about ways that you can be a little more prepared for emergencies and for Mother Nature. First and foremost, one of the most important things I feel is educating our children. Let's just look at something simple; but it starts at home. So if you have a fire or a need to evacuate your home, have you sat down and discussed with your family where you would meet if you had to evacuate the home for whatever reason? Having a meeting place outside of the home is important and if that meeting place is say impaired in some way have another, have a backup. Oftentimes in our home we have three backup measures for something, just because it just seems to be a good number and a good way to roll so that you are well protected and well covered. So if you don't have that place I encourage you to sit with your family and discuss these things up and they'll be more things to discuss as we go here because I'm going to cover a bunch of different topics. Another thing is okay, let's say your children are small and God forbid you did have a fire that night they're in bed, they hear the smoke alarms go off they need to evacuate, you happen to be downstairs can't get back up to them, they need to know what they need to do and what the next step is. For starters, a lot of people with two story buildings don't have little ladders to get out of the second story. So these are things you need to think about and have in place and also go over them with your children, don't just let it be assumed that because it's there they're going to know what to do; practice. Practice these things, the more you practice them the more they become ingrained and the more it becomes like a routine that when you really do need to put these things in place they'll work out. Well for you in a troubled time, I can tell you that from experience. I'll share a little story with you toward the end then. Another thing you need to have it's on your refrigerator or somewhere that's accessible to the whole family, is a list of all the emergency phone numbers including grandma and grandpa and someone else to reach if they can't reach you and if your kids do have cell phones make sure all these numbers are in their cell phones. It's really important because you never know those extra seconds that it could save from hitting a speed dial versus dialing the number can make a really big difference trust me I've experienced it. But that is so huge, so many people don't have that in place: you know the fire department, 9-1-1, explain to them what to do. Make sure your address is written down. If you have young children and they need the address, keep going over the address, keep going over the phone number, keep going over these emergency numbers and the importance of them. The ambulance, Poison control, you know put these numbers down that they're accessible for the family because I know in my home, I tend to take care of all that kind of stuff. I take care of all the-a lot of the phone calling, take care of all the paperwork you know so I know these numbers. Well my guys don't so much and if something were to happen to me and I didn't have those things in place, I'd be sunk. So you know if–I know the same pertains in your family and children are young and don't really think of these things but this is something we need to educate in our homes also being prepared for the unexpected with Mother Nature is really really important. Every area of the country has different effects of Mother Nature down south you get a lot of tornadoes and hurricanes on the coast and wildfires can be all over the place, floods, all kinds of things and you know what directly affects your area and you need to be prepared for those things. One thing that I feel is really important when i
Podcast #142: I’m Back
May 5th, 2017: In today’s show, after a long healing hiatus, I am thoroughly excited to be back. I also shared my newly published book How To Embrace An Off-Grid Lifestyle: Our Journey & A Step By Step Look At The Lifestyle along with my testimony and healing. My husband and I did a video sharing God's Miracles On Our Off-Grid Homestead which is something you might enjoy listening to as well. NOTE: If you are unable to stream audio, you will find the transcription below… Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes. Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio show where we are homesteading traditionally 100% off today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow, here's your host Tammy Trayer. Tammy: Hello everyone, it is so good to be back. This is Tammy Trayer of Mountain Woman Radio and you can also find myself and my family at trayerwilderness.com. For those of you that are new to my podcasts, my family and I live 100% off-grid in northern Idaho with solar power and we advocate on our lifestyle and traditional and primitive skill sets, wilderness survival and autism and a little bit of everything from scratch cooking you name it. So it's good to have you and it is so good to be back, I really needed a reprieve and a healing hiatus and I have a little bit of a–okay, let me rephrase that, I have a really awesome testimony to share with you guys today. My surgery was January, 27th of 2016 so I'm well over a year past my surgery and I would like to say that the healing process is quite something with this illness and it’s very slow and long and it had many ups and downs. This illness is one of those things where you do really well and all of a sudden I had a relapse or I pushed too many toxins and I ended up flat on my back or down for three days. It was always a new journey, every week was a new journey and sometimes even every day was a new journey. But what I have to share with you is that for the last three or four months I have been really sick because our area is very wet and was very snowy and it was causing snow mold and mold in the area and I was exposed to a really bad mold situation and really suffered and it took that long for it to leave my system and it was still hanging on strong and on March, 24th , this is really awesome and some of you won't believe it but I'm going to share it anyway. I was doing some of my treatments and I was really sick and I prayed for God to just heal my body and I suddenly felt different. I felt a peace come over me. I was listening to a Todd White podcast and I love Todd White, some people think he's just really awkward you know people judge him by his looks. I think he's just got a huge heart for God and for Jesus and I love listening to him, he inspires me in such a great way. And I was listening to his podcast the same time and part way through that podcast he prayed for his audience for healing and then he prayed and mentioned that over the weekend that you would receive full healing and it has been beyond amazing to watch my men in awe of the changes in my body and how I am healed. So it has just been amazing and I just feel very, very, blessed. I feel very, very, blessed to have walked in this valley because I know that God has used me as a vessel to help others due to our video and my post and my advocacy to this illness, we have saved 14 lives that we are aware of that have reached out to us and that is just awesome. I hope and pray there are more and I hope and pray that people will share our story. If you are unfamiliar with it, you can go to trayerwilderness.com/ourhealthjourney and in there you'll also find a video my husband and I did. Today, I am out here taking a very nice long walk with my dogs in the sunshine and just embracing what will soon be spring. Spring in northern Idaho is usually a little crazy you never know what you're going to get till around July-mid July often. We already got snow on the ground the first week of July, so it's only April 4th and it is a great day. It is my husband's birthday-the Mountain Man and it's also our anniversary. So I feel also very blessed to have such an amazing man in my life who stood by my side and cared for me and blessed me and loves me like he does. So I’m a very lucky woman and I know it and I'm very grateful for him. Some other things that have happened since I've been off the air, is God gave me enough strength and I don't–that's the only thing I can give credit for is because I don't know where else I would have come up with the strength, but I was able to finish my book. My book was shelved when I got sick and it’s been a two year process but it's been in my head for eight years and January 10th, on my birthday, I was able to get my book on Amazon and I am so excited. It is called How To Embrace An Off-Grid Lifestyle: Our Lifestyle & A Step By Step Look At The Lifestyle. The first chapter has our story a
