Ep 991🪻English or Itoh Peony - Which one is Better
Hey, fellow gardeners, Ken Lain here! Peonies are gracing the garden center, and it's a perfect time to explore their captivating varieties. For those seeking larger-than-life blooms, Itoh peonies are a must-have. These hybrids boast softball-sized flowers and stunning foliage. If you adore classic charm and abundant blooms, English peonies are the answer. Both types thrive in mountain gardens and offer long-lasting beauty. Remember, well-drained soil is key to their happiness. Plant them in raised beds or amend your soil with compost for optimal drainage. With proper care, these perennials will bring joy to generations. 🪻Ken Lain, The Top 10 Gardener Not already a Garden Club Member? Ep 990🌲Healthier Evergreens for a Brighter Landscape
Hey gardeners, Ken Lain here! It's time to give your evergreens some love! After protecting them from pests, remember to nourish them with a good fertilizer. Avoid synthetic options; they can harm our environment and beneficial soil life. Instead, choose an organic, all-natural fertilizer like my 7-4-4 All-Purpose Plant Food. Its blend of cottonseed meal, guano, and iron is perfect for our alkaline soils and hungry plants. Add soil sulfur to acidify the soil for an extra boost, leading to brighter colors and more vigorous growth. Spread the fertilizer over the root zone, let the rain and irrigation do their work, and watch your garden thrive! Ep 988🐛Garden Alert - Bark Beetle and Pine Scale are BAD
Ken Lain here! Friends, the early warmth has awakened our gardens and, unfortunately, the pests, too. Bark beetles are attacking Ponderosa and Austrian pines, while pine scale decimates Piñon pines. Look for pinholes on Ponderosas and small dots on Piñon needles. These pests can kill mature trees if untreated. Fortify your pines with a 7-4-4 all-purpose fertilizer now. Then, apply a systemic drench at the tree's base; it's a simple, effective solution that lasts a year. Don't wait—protect your trees now to avoid costly removals later. A healthy tree is a resilient tree. Ep 987🪻Growing Better Peony as Fragrant Spring Flowers
Ken and Lisa Lain here each week to answer your garden questions! Spring's arrival brings fragrant peonies, a garden favorite. If you're eager to cultivate these beauties, remember they crave well-draining soil and plenty of sunshine—at least four to five hours daily. Amend heavy clay soils with ample compost or consider raised beds. Peonies are long-lived perennials, so choose their location wisely. For those battling deer, rejoice! Peonies are deer-resistant. And if you're looking for a hardy, deer-proof hedge, consider Elaeagnus ciliaris, also known as silverberry. Its dense, evergreen foliage and resilience make it a fantastic choice. Ep 983🌸How to Prepare the Landscape for Maximum Spring Beauty
Hey gardeners, Ken Lain here! Spring is just around the corner, and it's time to get your landscape ready for a spectacular show. Here are three key tasks to tackle now: First, feed your plants. Just like us, plants need nourishment to thrive. Fertilize everything in your landscape with a good quality organic or all-natural plant food. Avoid synthetic fertilizers, as they can harm beneficial soil organisms and pollute our waterways. Second, focus on the drip line. When fertilizing, remember that the feeder roots of your plants are located at the drip line, or the outermost edge of the canopy. Sprinkle the fertilizer evenly around the drip line for optimal absorption. Finally, choose the right fertilizer. At Watters Garden Center, we offer two excellent organic fertilizers: our 7-4-4 All-Purpose Plant Food and our 6-4-4-7 Organic Fruit and Vegetable Food. Both are pelletized for easy application and provide slow-release nutrients for healthy growth. By following these simple steps, you'll be setting your landscape up for a vibrant and productive spring season. Happy gardening! Hey fruit tree lovers, Ken Lain here! Want to harvest your own delicious apples, peaches, and pears? Then, you need the right trees for our unique mountain climate! Here in the Central Highlands, we experience late frosts that can damage early bloomers. Select trees adapted to these conditions and amend your soil with compost and mulch for optimal growth. At Watters Garden Center, we specialize in fruit trees that thrive in our region. We offer a wide variety of apples, pears, peaches, plums, and more! Remember our unique cocktail trees! Ep 973🍒 Space to Thrive - Guidelines for Planting Fruit Trees
Hey fruit tree enthusiasts, Ken and Lisa Lain here! Planting fruit trees is rewarding, but proper spacing is crucial for their health and productivity. Here's the lowdown on spacing your trees for optimal growth and a bountiful harvest. Standard-size trees: Typically grow 20-30 feet tall and need about 20 feet of space between them. This allows for ample sunlight, air circulation, and room to work in your orchard. Semi-dwarf trees: These smaller trees, reaching 15-20 feet tall, can be spaced closer together, around 15 feet apart. This is a great option for smaller yards or those who want to maximize their planting space. Consider the type of tree: Some trees, like apples and pears, tend to grow larger than others, so adjust spacing accordingly. Pruning and training: If you're willing to prune and train your trees regularly, you can potentially space them closer together. Not already a Garden Club Member? Ep 972𖣂 Pruning for Recovery - Repairing Broken Tree Branches
Hey gardeners, Ken Lain here! Spring is just around the corner, and it's the perfect time to assess any damage your trees may have suffered during the winter. Those heavy snows can wreak havoc on branches, so let's talk about pruning for recovery. If you find broken or damaged branches, it's important to prune them cleanly. Make your cut at the branch collar, the swollen area where the branch meets the trunk. This encourages faster healing and prevents decay. For larger branches, use a three-step cut to avoid tearing the bark. Don't worry about under-pruning – it's better to be conservative. You can always remove more later if needed. And remember to fertilize those pruned trees to encourage vigorous new growth. With a little TLC, your trees will recover quickly and return to their majestic selves in no time. Ep 966🍑Are New Fruit Tree Plantings in Danger from Winter Snows
Hey there, gardening friends! Ken and Lisa Lain, the Top 10 Gardeners, here to answer your questions about gardening in the Central Highlands. Ah, the joys and challenges of winter gardening! You're right, it's definitely a busy time for us gardeners, even with the snow. Remember when we talked about the importance of staking trees? It's especially crucial during these snowy months to prevent them from leaning and potentially damaging the roots. Don't worry about those fruit trees! A light dusting of snow can be beneficial, providing insulation and protecting them from extreme temperatures. However, heavy snowfall can be a concern, so it's a good idea to shake off excess snow to prevent breakage. And if you're worried about ice buildup, keep an eye on your plants and gently remove any ice that forms. Those beautiful ornamental grasses can take a beating in winter weather. It's perfectly fine to cut them back now, and they'll bounce back in the spring. Just be sure to cut them back to a manageable height and fertilize them to encourage new growth. Speaking of pruning, we touched on that earlier, too! Remember, it's best to prune roses and other fruit trees in the dormant season before they start to bud out in spring. This will help prevent them from being damaged by late frosts. Not already a Garden Club Member? Ep 965❄️The Good, Bad and Ugly Reasons to Love Snow in the Gardens
Hey gardeners, Ken Lain here! Today, we're tackling the good, the bad, and the ugly of snow in the garden. While it may seem like a nuisance at times, snow plays a vital role in the health of your plants. The good news is that snow acts as a natural reservoir, slowly melting and releasing moisture into the soil, which is especially beneficial during dry winter months. It also acts as a blanket, protecting plants from harsh winter temperatures and frost. As a bonus, snow can help to kill insect eggs and larvae, reducing pest pressure come spring. However, heavy snow can damage plants, especially young trees and shrubs. It's essential to shake off excess snow to prevent breakage. Ice buildup can also be harmful, so gently remove it from delicate leaves and stems if necessary. And finally, the ugly side of snow: it can create a moist environment that encourages mold growth. Keep an eye on your plants and remove any moldy debris. Overall, the benefits of snow in the garden outweigh the drawbacks. By taking a few precautions, like shaking off heavy snow and monitoring mold, you can ensure that your plants emerge from winter healthy and ready to thrive. Ep 962🌿Get More Wildflowers – Plant Now
Hey gardeners, Ken Lain here! It might seem counterintuitive, but those tiny wildflower seeds actually benefit from winter's chill. The freeze-thaw cycle helps break down their tough outer shells, leading to better germination come spring. Plus, planting now gives them a head start on the growing season and reduces competition from weeds. When choosing wildflower seeds, opt for a perennial mix specifically designed for our mountain climate. Avoid those cheap annual mixes – they won't return year after year. To prepare your soil, scrape it open with a stiff rake and remove any debris. Then, mix your seeds with Watters Premium Mulch for easier spreading and to protect them from hungry birds. With a little patience and care, you'll have a vibrant wildflower display that brings joy to your garden and supports pollinators. Ep 960🌾A Guide to Beautiful Ornamental Grasses
Hey gardeners, Ken Lain here! Beautiful ornamental grasses add so much texture and movement to our gardens, but did you know they benefit from a little "extra love," too? Just like us, they appreciate a good meal! Manure is a fantastic organic fertilizer packed with nutrients that grasses absolutely love. It improves soil structure, helps retain water, and promotes vigorous growth. We recommend using aged or composted manure at Watters to avoid burning your precious plants. In early spring, apply a thin layer around the base of grasses like Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster') or Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), being careful not to let it touch the leaves. Water thoroughly afterwards, and repeat this nourishing process again in the fall. Don't forget to cut back your grasses in autumn to remove dead foliage and encourage fresh growth. Regular watering, especially during our hot Arizona summers, is also essential. With these simple tips, your ornamental grasses will thrive, creating a stunning landscape you can enjoy year-round. Ep 959🍑Peaches - Does it Take More than One to Fruit
Hey there, backyard buddies! Ken and Lisa Lain, the Top 10 Gardeners, here, to answer your questions about growing luscious peaches in the Central Highlands. Good news! You can plant fruit trees right now, and most peach varieties are self-pollinating, meaning you only need one tree to produce fruit. However, planting two different varieties nearby can increase fruit set and give you a more abundant harvest. For those wondering about cherries, look for self-fruitful varieties like Lapins and Stella. But remember, even self-pollinating trees benefit from having a partner, so consider planting two if you have the space. Not already a Garden Club Member? Ep 958🍀February Gardening: Preparing for a Bountiful Spring
Hey gardeners, Ken Lain The Top 10 Gardener here! February is the time to get your hands dirty and your garden ready! Spring planting is just around the corner, and a little prep now makes all the difference. Don't wait for perfect weather; seize those sunny days and get your soil in shape. I've been busy in my own garden, and I'm sharing what works for me, hoping it works for you too. First things first: soil preparation. Think of it as building a cozy bed for your plants. You want to enrich it with plenty of organic matter. I use a 50/50 blend of composted mulch and manure. We take the extra step to deodorize our manure here at Watters Garden Center, so no stinky surprises in your car! Spread a two-to-three-inch layer over your raised beds or garden plot and turn it in one shovel's depth. While you're at it, remove any leftover roots and debris from last year – they can harbor disease and rob your new plants of nutrients. Now, for my secret weapon: a blend of fruit and vegetable food (6-4-4-7 formula, high in calcium!), gypsum, and sulfur. The calcium helps with bigger, more flavorful fruits and vegetables and prevents blossom end rot. Gypsum also helps with that. And the sulfur? It's key for us here in Northern Arizona. Our water is very alkaline, so we need to lower the pH of the soil, and sulfur does just that. Don't add lime – you'll just make the problem worse! Mix everything in, let it settle for a few weeks, and you'll be ready to plant your early spring crops like potatoes, garlic, onions, cauliflower, lettuce, and broccoli come March. Get a head start now, and you'll be harvesting long before the "yardiners" even think about planting! Ep 954🌺Houseplants for a Better Nights Rest
Hey Houseplant Lovers, Ken Lain here with Lisa Watters Lain! We all spend a lot of time in our bedrooms, so why not create a space that's both beautiful and conducive to a good night's sleep? Houseplants can help! Not only do they add a touch of nature and clean the air, but studies have shown they can also improve sleep quality. Plants like Aloe Vera, Dracaena, and English Ivy are known for their air-purifying properties. Peace Lilies are great for removing toxins, and Spider Plants are super easy to care for. Even the popular Fiddle Leaf Fig can contribute to a healthier bedroom environment. When choosing plants, consider the light conditions in your room and your own caregiving style. And don't forget to use a moisture meter to ensure you're watering correctly. With a little planning, you can create a bedroom oasis that promotes relaxation and restful sleep. Ep 953🌾Ornamental Grass Beautified by Manure
Hey gardeners, Ken Lain here! Today, I'm sharing a little secret that will transform your ornamental grasses: the power of manure! Manure is a rich, organic fertilizer packed with nutrients that grasses love. It helps to improve soil structure, increase water retention, and promote healthy growth. For best results, use aged or composted manure to avoid burning your plants. Apply a thin layer around the base of your grasses in the spring, being careful not to let it touch the leaves. Water thoroughly and repeat the process in the fall. In addition to fertilizing, remember to cut back your grasses in the fall to remove dead leaves and encourage new growth. Water regularly, especially during hot weather, and mow as needed to maintain a neat appearance. By following these tips and giving your ornamental grasses a little extra love, you can create a beautiful and healthy garden that adds texture, movement, and curb appeal to your home. Ep 952🌷When Can Spring Planting Begin
Hey there, backyard buddies! Ken and Lisa Lain, the Top 10 Gardeners, here, to answer your gardening questions! Folks are already itching to get planting, and the big question I keep hearing is, "When can I start my spring garden?" Well, here in Northern Arizona, we need to be mindful of those late frosts. Mother's Day is a good rule of thumb for planting those summer-loving veggies like tomatoes and peppers. 🌶️ But don't despair! There's plenty you can plant before then. Think cool-season favorites like broccoli, cauliflower, and those cheerful pansies. Watters just got our first shipment of pansies in, and they're raring to go! And guess what? Our fruit trees arrive next week! So if you're dreaming of fresh peaches and apples, now's the time to get those trees in the ground. 🍎🍑 Don't forget about those early spring bloomers like lilacs – they'll add beauty and fragrance to your garden while you wait for those warm summer days. Ep 951🌱How to Prepare the Garden in January for Spring Planting
Hey gardeners, Ken Lain The Top 10 Gardener here! It's January in Northern Arizona, and while the snow might be falling, a true gardener knows it's time to start thinking spring! The first step? Soil preparation. Clear out any remaining debris from last year's garden and mix in a 2-3 inch layer of composted mulch and manure. At Watters, we compost our manure extra-long so you can skip the stink and get straight to the good stuff. To really give your garden a boost, mix in Watters Fruit & Vegetable Food, gypsum, and sulfur. The Fruit & Vegetable Food is packed with calcium for bigger, tastier yields (think tomatoes and cucumbers!) and helps prevent blossom end rot. Gypsum provides extra support for your veggies, and the sulfur helps balance the pH of our naturally alkaline soil. Let that amended soil rest for a few weeks, allowing the snow and rain to work their magic. By March, you'll have the perfect foundation for planting potatoes, garlic, onions, and all those early spring vegetables! Don't forget to stop by Watters Garden Center – our early spring pansies are here, and the fruit trees arrive this week! Ep 944🌸Dealing with Plants that Block a View
Hey there, backyard buddies! Ken and Lisa Lain, the Top 10 Gardeners, here, to answer your gardening questions! It happens to the best of us - a once-loved tree or shrub now dominates your landscape and blocks that stunning view. But don't worry, there are solutions! First, identify the culprit. Is it an overgrown evergreen or a sprawling shrub? Once you've pinpointed the problem, consider your options. Pruning can help manage size and shape, but sometimes removal is necessary. When replacing the plant, choose wisely! Consider mature size and growth habits. Opt for varieties that complement your view instead of obscuring it. Remember, framing a view is like composing a painting. Use columnar plants like Aspens to draw the eye, or create layers with shorter shrubs and perennials. And if you're unsure about the best approach, visit us at Watters Garden Center! We're always happy to offer expert advice and help you create a landscape that showcases your views, not hides them.
