North Korea fired more than 200 artillery rounds towards South Korea's Baengnyeong and Yeonpyeong islands. The artillery fell within a maritime buffer zone near the Northern Limit Line, a disputed de facto border established by the United Nations at the end of the Korean War in 1953.
