Show Notes
Time to focus on the soil and less on the plants
-
Soil stores carbon, and the trees and plants in our gardens take this carbon from the air and through their roots, they store carbon in the ground. Healthy soil full of micro- organisms keeps the carbon in the ground.
-
Cornell university reference - 1 lb of synthetic fertilizer releases 4-5 lbs of CO2
Go electric with all of your garden tools.
-
A gas powered lawn mower releases the same emissions as driving 800 km
-
Check your indoor battery tools to see if they also have outdoor garden tools
-
New technology in this area makes the batteries recyclable
Add bird feeders in the summer.
-
Our local native songbirds are in decline due to Loss of habitat and food sources
-
Summer feeding has shown to increase local nesting and allows parent birds to more easily care for young
Bring back the flowers
- Too much of our landscaping has been focussed on evergreens, ornamental grasses and flowers that don’t support local pollinator communities
- Whether in a container or in the garden - add a section of mixed seeds suited for local pollinators
- Plant densely - living mulch.
