Yesterday, the sun launched its largest solar flare in seven years and the largest of the ongoing 11-year solar cycle. Historically, stronger storms have caused severe disruptions, like the 1859 Carrington Event, which damaged telegraph systems and produced visible auroras at low latitudes.
