August 14th: Rainey Bethea Dies (1936)
Executions, though now a highly debated topic, once took place in front of crowds of thousands. People who came to watch a criminal die as if it was a matinee movie. On August 14th 1936 a man was executed in front of about 20,000 onlookers. 20,000 people who watched his botched execution that, in the end, put a stop to the practice of public executions for good.
