Pete, Paul and Patte welcome Essential Listener Andy, who has suggested an episode of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, starring Gielgud and Richardson, entitled "The Final Problem." Come for the old-time radio, stay for the scintillating (that's one way of putting it) discussion afterwards! (Can anyone point to it and say, "Yes, that is what [NAME OF SERIES] was all about.") 2. Is it an episode worthy of inclusion in any and every OTR aficionado's private collection? So with this in mind, we three bring you, as our fiftieth number (but 1st official episode of S5), this episode of Sherlock Holmes, from 4-17-55. We'll introduce the show, play it in its entirety, then discuss it at length. Thanks for joining us, and we hope you enjoy it! Please show your support of the podcast by doing any of the following... PROJECT AUDION EXTRA: Adventures of Stan Slade

A PROJECT AUDION EXTRA: The Adventures of Stan Slade, "The Burmese Penguin Caper" What do you do if you grew up listening the classic dramatic series on the radio, then found a career writing TV comedy for Bob Hope, and now, decades later, you still harbor fond feelings about those radio shows of your youth? Well, if you're Robert L. Mills, you write shows like the one you're about to hear. It's a takeoff of a certain famous detective whose name sounds awfully similar to OUR show's hero, named Stan Slade. The original "Adventures of Sam Spade" was broadcast in the late 1940s and early '50s. It starred Howard Duff as the detective created by Dashiell Hammett. It was a fun show that never took itself entirely seriously. Mr. Mills has nudged his tribute a little further into the tongue-in-cheek -- or should I say tongue in beak? -territory, reuniting the detective with his old adversaries from the Maltese Falcon movie, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. Everyone in our cast gets to have some fun with this adventure of Stan Slade, Detective, entitled "The Burmese Penguin Caper".

CLASSIC RADIO ROAD SHOW: Gunsmoke and Frontier Gentleman

It's a double-feature from Classic Radio Road Show, performed before a live audience. Gunsmoke represents the rarest of phenomena in the annals of radio and television. It not only ran for decades, but it also introduced to the public a cast of characters that gradually took on mythic proportions and forever became part of the popular consciousness. SuZanne and Gabor Barabas, the authors of the preeminent book on the history of both the radio and television versions of Gunsmoke, were on hand at this live performance to talk afterward about the series and answer questions. Frontier Gentleman was one of several "adult westerns," along with Gunsmoke and others, that appeared on radio and television in the early 1950s. The genre was described as "grittier, more realistic", and clearly intended for an older audience. Cast of Gunsmoke: Elaine Steelman as Kitty Marcia Finn as Edna Michael Bürgi as Chester Brian Hotaling as Mitt Dillon Anthony Aversano as Doc Duane Noch as Hans Gruber Sheldon Fallon as Mr. Jonas Cast of Frontier Gentleman: Michael Bürgi as Announcer and C.B. Brian Hotaling as Kendall Marcia Finn as Black Anthony Aversano as Charlie Duane Noch as Beljoy Sheldon and Roberta Fallon as Mr. & Mrs. Willis Laurie Noch as Mercy Day Elaine Steelman as Mrs. Beljoy

WELCOME TO MUTANT COUNTY - AL'S PREGNANT

EPISODE 3 - AL'S PREGNANT Welcome. Welcome to Mutant County! Lady Finger is a small town like any other. Nestled in the heart of a small county, the denizens are, for the most part, just like you and me. In fact, they could be you and me except for one important detail… or two. Lady Finger and the surrounding hamlets that make up Clover County will – in the not too distant future – suffer massive nuclear fallout from a sudden reactor leak. Soon they will be quietly wondering if the radioactivity created the abominations that besiege their little community or indeed merely attracted them – perhaps from some unspeakable interdimensional rift. By the time the Cultists take over the local graveyard and mysterious government agents impose an invisible barrier around the entire county "for their safety", Clover County will be no more, and Mutant County will stand, festering, in its place. And yet the good people of the county remain, and they'd like to welcome you to their little village… be it ever so humble. Episode 3: "Al's Pregnant" was written and performed by Michael P. Thiessen and Peter Church.

PROJECT AUDION 70 - The Great Gildersleeve

What makes The Great Gildersleeve a great radio comedy? Historically, it was the first-ever spinoff series, and its classic sitcom characters were more deeply and warmly drawn than its parent show Fibber and McGee and Molly, but no less funny. Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve was the unforgettably blustery Water Commissioner of Summerfield, portrayed with a famous laugh full of innuendo by Hal Peary (and later Willard Waterman). Gildy's interactions with his nephew Leroy and niece Marjorie; friends like Judge Hooker, Peavey the druggist, and Floyd the barber; and his romantic entanglements with Leila Ransom and others delivered laughs every week. All the regulars are here in this new script penned by Robert L. Mills and recreated by some of Audion's most talented voices: Trevor Rines, in Ontario Canada Julie Hoverson in Washington State Pete Lutz in Texas Mel Rose in Pennsylvania and Randy Kerdoon in Washington State The script was penned by Robert L. Mills in California The production was supervised by Larry Groebe in Texas

PROJECT AUDION 68 - Wayfaring Men

Project Audion 68 - Wayfaring Men Larry Groebe wanted to do a "very special episode" for the finale of the fifth season. Starting with recreating what is not only a lost episode, but an entirely lost show from some of the earliest days of network radio. "Wayfaring Men" is pretty much an unknown, undocumented show... a dramatic 1933 summer serial from CBS about the lives of the hoboes, tramps, and bums who were so numerous during the Great Depression. Not a single recording of the show exists, and there's almost no background information either, but Project Audion came upon a handful of the original mimeographed scripts, and has selected an episode dated June 26 1933 to bring back to life.

PROJECT AUDION 67 - Our Miss Brooks

Project Audion 67 - Our Miss Brooks Project Audion presents the delightful mid-century classic sitcom "Our Miss Brooks." Back in the 1950s, the character of Connie Brooks was everyone's favorite high school English teacher - sassy and smart, but starry-eyed in her unrequited desire for biology teacher Mr. Boynton. Actress Eve Arden's portrayal was so iconic she made the jump to television four years after the radio version launched in 1948 - and even filmed a movie adaptation in 1956. Robert L. Mills, comedy writer for Bob Hope, has crafted a fresh episode of the show just for Project Audion that matches the original radio episodes, laugh for laugh. We had a great time recording this one, and you'll have a great time listening to it!

PROJECT AUDION 66 - Sherlock Holmes

Project Audion 66 - The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Project Audion brings you "The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes," recreating an episode which has remained unheard for eighty years. There's no more famous detective, real or imagined, than Holmes. His creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, pretty much defined the mystery-detective story, and 138 years later Holmes and Watson are still part of popular culture. In 1945, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce portrayed them weekly on the Mutual Radio network. Our selected script (which aired only once, on January 15, 1945) "The Curse of Doctor Anselmo," carries its own mystery - the secret identity of the man who co-wrote it pseudonymously. Will you discover whodunnit? Will Holmes fall under Anselmo's curse? Will the Petri family take the time to bring you good wine? All will be revealed in this delightful half hour audio drama, faithful to the original series' sound and spirit.

NO SOAP RADIO - Suspense: The Whole Town's Sleeping

NO SOAP RADIO -- Suspense: The Whole Town's Sleeping Our 6th NO SOAP RADIO production, created in September, 2023. This is a recreation of the 1955 Suspense program - "The Whole Town's Sleeping". In this show our production values took a leap forward. This was our first time incorporating a green screen into the video production, allowing us to place our performers into our own graphic backgrounds, and simultaneously remove all microphones from the shot. Listeners may be interested to know that No Soap's Annette Bochenek (who plays Lavinia Nebbs) has her own website, Hometowns To Hollywood, where she takes deep dives into Hollywood characters, both famous and obscure. Check it out: https://hometownstohollywood.com/ This show was produced, directed and edited by Paul Kovit. Paul also recreated many of the original music cues in GarageBand using instrument samples from the app. These cues were surreptitiously blended with some of the original cues. In addition, Larry Groebe of Project Audion provided a bunch of foley work for this production. We hope you like the end result.
