On this episode of Grit and Grace, Tahverlee is joined by her friend and spiritual leader, Dr. Anita Sanchez. Anita grew up in an indigenous community, recognizing that all people are made up of the different elements of the earth and that all beings are interconnected with nature, both now and in ages past. Despite her wholesome upbringing, she experienced more than her fair share of suffering, being sexually abused for nine years and losing her father in a racially motivated act of violence. As a young adult, she was introduced to the Eagle Hoop prophecy and the Mohican elder’s vision of the four sacred gifts for all humanity. These gifts have resonated so strongly with Anita that they have changed the course of her life and her career. She wrote a book entitled “The Four Sacred Gifts” and she travels all over the world talking with leaders about integrating the gifts into their businesses.The four sacred gifts are: (1) The power to forgive the unforgivable, (2) The power of unity, (3) The power of healing, and (4) Hope in action. Anita shares with listeners that people typically want to focus on the powers of unity and healing, but in order to make any progress towards those goals, a lot of internal work has to be done to re-establish hope by tapping into the power to forgive the unforgivable. Our culture conditions us to push away feelings of hurt or past traumas rather than working through what happened, taking away the lessons learned, forgiving the people who caused the hurt, and moving on from the event as a stronger and more whole being. Anita also talks with listeners about the influence of being connected with the land of your ancestors and the ancestors of the land where you currently reside, emphasizing their importance in your interconnectedness with yourself, those around you, and nature. While the coronavirus pandemic has led to much personal suffering for many people all over the world, Anita speaks of the positive impacts on the earth and on personal relationships, saying that perhaps this was done for us. Future City is a project-based learning program for middle school children. The idea is that children get to build a virtual city of the future. These showcase solutions to a current sustainability issue and how they can make it better. After moving to Denver, Rebecca Spearot realized a regional Future City competition in Colorado wasn't being offered. She formed a non-profit organization to bring this creative educational opportunity to the state. The event of the season was held this year at the Colorado School of Mines with Denise Plant as emcee. The student's innovative ideas were coming thick and fast. Ideas in providing cleaner energy, turning rainwater into drinking water, and dealing with the effects of a volcanic eruption on the local water supply. Natalie Tysdal is a well-known face in Colorado, a News Anchor on Colorado’s Own Channel 2. She is a courageous and thoughtful truth-seeker. Her journalism roots are well-established and began with her sharing a very personal story in a public manner. Nadine Roberts Cornish is a Certified Senior Advisor, Author, Speaker and Founder of The Caregivers’ Guardian. Nadine was her mother’s caregiver for 15 years. When her mother was diagnosed with a brain tumor, she took her first steps in becoming a caregiver. Eventually, she moved from shuttling back and forth between California and Colorado to becoming a 24/7 caregiver for the last 4 years of her mother’s life. This experience changed her life and her career, and she founded The Caregivers’ Guardian - a consulting and support service for caregivers. The life lessons she learnt when looking after her mother also became the basis for her first book: Tears in my Gumbo. Women in their 40’s and upwards, are now in the unique position of being the sandwich generation, raising children as well as caring for ageing parents.
