On the morning of August 16, 1942, a US Navy blimp lifted off from Treasure Island in San Francisco on a routine anti-submarine patrol. Hours later, it crashed into a quiet neighborhood in Daly City, California. But something was terribly wrong.
The blimp's doors were open. Its equipment was untouched. The life raft was still secured. But the two crew members—Lieutenant Ernest DeWitt Cody and Ensign Charles Ellis Adams—had vanished without a trace.There was no distress call. No sign of a struggle. No blood. No bodies. Just an empty blimp drifting through the sky like a ghost ship.
Eighty years later, the mystery of the L-8 blimp remains unsolved. What happened to the two Navy airmen? Did they fall out? Jump? Were they abducted? This episode explores one of the strangest unsolved mysteries in American military history.
