Show Notes

On November 27, 1978, San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated in San Francisco City Hall by former supervisor Dan White.Harvey Milk was the first openly gay elected official in California.

He was a trailblazer, an activist, and a voice for the LGBTQ+ community at a time when being openly gay could cost you everything—your job, your family, your safety, even your life.Dan White had resigned from the Board of Supervisors just days earlier. When he tried to get his job back and was denied, he smuggled a gun into City Hall, shot Mayor Moscone four times, then walked to Harvey Milk's office and shot him five times.

White was convicted of voluntary manslaughter—not murder—after his defense team argued he was suffering from depression, citing his consumption of junk food as evidence. The verdict sparked outrage and riots in San Francisco. This episode explores the life and legacy of Harvey Milk, the assassination that shocked the nation, and the controversial trial that followed.
