Show Notes
Sometimes, moms become accidental advocates. A situation arises in our family and we become a voice that educates and a lens through which others get a glimpse into our world. Morgan Matkovic is a passionate, no-nonsense advocate for children on the autism spectrum, fueled by her daughter, Lila Lee, who was diagnosed two years ago. Morgan, a Charleston-based writer, is also mom to Lila’s older sister, Maddie, and even authored a book that features the special relationship between her daughters called My Sister, Lila Lee.
Morgan shares the beautiful gift of being more present as an autism mom, and the challenges that come with honoring Lila’s differences and needs. She is our definition of a strong mom and she encourages others through this conversation. As Autism Awareness month begins, we invite you to listen to Morgan’s story, plus:
-why Morgan wishes to represent her daughter’s experience only when speaking about autism
-how a disappointing split with Lila’s nursery school ultimately allowed her to find a more appropriate and joyful place to learn
-why Maddie was the inspiration for the book My Sister, Lila Lee and the empathy Morgan hopes it evokes
-how Morgan became more comfortable going out as a family as opposed to staying home
-the organization she formed to help families figure out that logistics and insurance paperwork associated with getting autism care, called Her Voice Charleston
