Important: Please stop using Spotify

bonus

Hello, Laurence & Lindsay here. We've got a big problem, and we need your help. If you're listening to this on Spotify, we're asking you to stop, and switch to another podcast player. As I'm sure most of you know, there's plenty of evidence that Spotify is a terrible company with a long history of exploiting and underpaying artists, but that's only part of why it's so bad. It's been reported that Spotify's CEO, Daniel Ek, has recently invested millions of Euros of your subscription fees in an AI weaponry company called Helsing. This company has developed an automated target identification system, with the option to keep a human in the loop. In other words, it's machines selecting which humans to kill on the battlefield. It's also been reported Spotify donated $150,000 to the Trump campaign, and it's recently been running ICE recruitment ads. It is a powerful force for bad. So here's our problem. Almost half of our total listenership comes from Spotify, and the adverts that we run are how we make our money. If we just pulled our podcasts straight away, that would be a huge financial blow for us. So we would like to urge you to listen elsewhere, on another podcast player. Lots of people recommend one called Pocket Casts, we've also heard good things about Podcast Addict. In the last month, we've had downloads from about 50 different podcast players, so there are plenty of alternatives. We've going to take our podcasts off Spotify as soon as it becomes clear that there is a real movement to cancel Spotify subscriptions and move to other platforms, and that movement is growing. For you, thankfully, this doesn't cost anything. Podcasts are, and will always be, free to listen to on any platform. Like we said, a lot of people seem to like Pocket Casts, and as far as we know, they're not evil. There are also a ton of others to choose from - all very accessible, and all free. If you've ever enjoyed our podcasts, or you're about to discover them, thank you so much for listening. Let's try and do the right thing. ANTENNAPOD is another one we are hearing good things about! S3 Ep 22Mockery Manor meets... Midst!

bonus

We're delighted to be bringing you one of our long-time favourite audio dramas - the wild and wonderful science-fantasy-western Midst. But before that, we sat down with the show's three mysterious creators Xen, Sara and Matt, to have a good old chat about the making of both Midst and Mockery Manor! We've been fans of each others' shows from their very beginnings, and it was such a pleasure to finally meet them.A little about Midst:The small desert planet of Midst spins on the border between two halves of the cosmos: the dazzling Un and the mysterious Fold. Life is simple for most of the planet’s inhabitants… until an influential civilization known as the Trust takes an interest in Midst and sparks an unexpected chain of events, intertwining the lives of three complicated antiheroes. Also, unrelated to any of that, Midst’s moon is about to fall out of the sky and cause reality to eat itself alive, so that’s not great either. Unsolved murders, cult brainwashing, and supernatural darkness all combine to create a clusterfuck of cosmic proportions. As always, you can find Midst wherever you get your podcasts.New Episodes of Midst release every Wednesday on your favorite podcast streaming platform, the Critical Role YouTube Channel, and for subscribers on Midst.coSubscribe to MidstSupport Lindsay and Laurence on Ko-fi! Support Lindsay and Laurence on Ko-fi! Our sincere thanks to you <3Read the TranscriptsPreviously on Mockery Manor: Bette sent each of the suspects a letter and brought them all to the parlour of the Four Spurs Saloon for a Poirot-style showdown. Sure enough, the currently-comatose Bobby is revealed as the man behind Clayton's many illegitimate kids. Twenty-some years ago, Bobby sold Clay's sperm without the country star's knowledge. What an asshole! One of those kids is revealed to be Clay's assistant, Anna Lou! Not only that, but Anna Lou's mother turns out to be Clay's stalker Abilene, the woman who invaded the VIP lounge on the night of the murder. That's right, folks, Abilene had bought some of Clay's purloined sperm to create her kids! Now, with those kids all grown up, Bette reveals that Abilene had recently been receiving love letters from someone purporting to be Clayton. Golly gosh! As for Jacob - formerly Harry - he claims to have come to the park with the sole purpose of getting his revenge on Bobby for running him out of town all those years ago... but Jacob done changed his mind and let bygones be bygones. And just as Bette was about to reveal who really poisoned Bobby, JJ burst through the doors and confessed!-------Written by Lindsay SharmanDirected by Lindsay Sharman and Laurence OwenMusic, sound design and editing by Laurence Owenfeaturing Hayley Evenett as Bette and JJ, Laurence Owen as Parker and additional voices, John Henry Falle as Fenwick, Christina Bianco as Kirsteen, Karim Kronfli as George, Luke Capasso as Jacob, Kristi Boulton as Anna Lou and Abilene, James Ducker as Walter, and Madame Magenta as herself.Mockery Manor is supported by Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grants, and our wonderful patrons on Ko-fi. We made A Midwinter Night's Dream back in 2022, and released it that Christmas for our Ko-Fi patrons, and as a one-off purchase for anyone else. This year we're excited to make it available for you all to enjoy for free. We're following the same release format for the Christmas special we're making this year. The Matty Tapes will be out in the first week of December 2023, and like last year, our patrons will be able to access it for free, and for everyone else, we're asking for a donation of £3.99. Next year, we'll release The Matty Tapes for free, for everyone! Why are we doing it this way? Well, in a nutshell, the proceeds from the sale of the Xmas Special helps us to keep making audio dramas! And we have a lot we want to do in 2024, including Magenta and Bernard's Paranormal Investigations and season four of Mockery Manor. In the meantime, sit back with a mug of spiced wine, warm your nutmegs by the fire, and enjoy A Midwinter Night's Dream.Read the transcriptSupport us on Ko-fi <3 Learn more about your ad choices. S2 Ep 14S2 E14 - The Haunted Masquerade (Part 1)

Previously: as the Committee arrives at Koschei the Deathless for Hilda's meeting, JJ and Bette sneak in via a side entrance to try and rescue Gretchen. They stumble into the ride, and find themselves in a creepy but familiar kitchen, occupied by an animatronic witch. To her horror, JJ realises that the witch is modelled on Dorothy - Margot's mother, and the twins' grandmother. JJ recalls the Dreamland dollhouse, shown to her by Dorothy moments before she was murdered by Matty. This kitchen is identical to that of the dollhouse. It's Mockery Manor. The twins hop on a passing Egg Buggy, and discover that each room is a distorted, nightmarish reflection of the rooms of Mockery Manor. As they near the grand ballroom, the twins hop out of the Buggy to stay unnoticed. They are shocked to see Margot and Davina among the Committee members. Why are they there? And who's looking after baby Freddie? Meanwhile, Hilda is losing communication with her security unit as they are each taken out by Jenkins' men. "We're under attack" she radios to the others. "Retreat to Koschei and seal it. No-one gets in, no-one gets out. And if you see anyone you don't recognise... execute on sight."In this episode: Party time.Want to check out Laurence & Lindsay's other podcast, The Ballad of Anne & Mary? Click this link! Jenkins reveals that he and Hilda were stationed at the Schloss during the war, and that the pair went on to design the theme park together. But Hilda has betrayed him. And not only that, Jenkins says... Hilda was responsible for the murder of Parker's father.Armed with Eric's gun, Bette bursts into the Schloss' secret rooms to find JJ standing over Bohdanko's body. S2 Ep 11S2 E11 - Bloodied Hands

Previously: Parker bumps into Bette at the entrance to Dunkelschloss. They hide from Hilda by running into The Little Mermaid's Underwater Cave System, which, they notice, has the exact same layout as Mockery Manor's Dreamland. Parker tells Bette his suspicions - that Jenkins might had his dad killed, and that he is running some sort of shady business with Hilda. Bette explains that she eavesdropped on Hilda's meeting with "some Italian guy who wouldn't shut up about Beluga whales". Parker recognises that to be Giuseppe, and it all clicks: Wizzzard Entertainment is running a Europe-wide smuggling ring... and Hilda is going to dispose of Jenkins.Meanwhile, in the schloss, Gretchen has stumbled across a hidden room, where Giuseppe and two other Wizzzard park managers are chatting. They don't know why Hilda has called them all to a meeting, but Giuseppe says he is planning to retire. They discover Gretchen listening, and she runs off to tell JJ what she heard. Of course, JJ doesn't want to know - much to Gretchen's frustration. With Dodgy Eric (currently unconscious on JJ's bed) having found her a buyer for the Vermeer, JJ says she just wants to sell her painting, grab Bette, and get out of there. An irate Bette bursts in, accompanied by Parker, and demands that JJ abandons her plan to sell the painting. But before JJ can make up her mind, a sinister figure arrives, gun in hand. Bohdanko - the Russian gangster who tailed her from Japan, and beat up Eric for information in Amsterdam - has come to collect his prize.Want to check out Laurence & Lindsay's other podcast, The Ballad of Anne & Mary? JJ finds Eric convalescing in her bed after being attacked by Bohdanko - the same gangster who nearly killed her in Tokyo. But that's not all - Eric has found a buyer for the Vermeer, and JJ reluctantly agrees to go ahead with the sale. S2 Ep 4S2 E4 - Casual Spycraft

Previously: JJ takes the scenic route to Hilda's office by riding The Elves of Europe and jumping off the boat at the Italy show scene. Using Hilda's phone, JJ contacts Dodgy Eric (her old flame, and generally an unsavoury character), and asks for his help selling her mysterious package - a stolen Vermeer painting - which he agrees to do. She is then escorted by Tomasz to her lodgings in the semi-derelict schloss at the centre of the park, which has no toilets. Meanwhile, Bette unexpectedly arrives at Mockery Manor and tells Margot, Jenkins and Parker that she has had a baby and needs a job. Jenkins presses her into spying on Hilda and the Dunkelschloss operations. Later that evening, JJ meets Gretchen sneaking around the park. S2 Ep 3S2 E3 - Whispering Trees

Previously - Flashing back to New Year's Eve 1990, a disillusioned Bette leaves her pilled-up sister partying with strangers on a Thailand beach, and finds herself spilling her emotions to Chet, an American traveller. Chet invites Bette to come with him to the Himalayas to find inner peace, which she does... without JJ. Flashing forward to the present (1992), Hilda teaches JJ to drive the People Cart in the Vegetable Patch, Dunkelschloss's dullest edu-tainment offering. JJ panics at the mention of a ride called the Trousers Meowsers Mega Coaster, and Hilda informs her that they sometimes swap attractions with Mockery Manor. She also reveals that JJ will be staying in the semi-derelict schloss (castle) during her stay. Meanwhile, at Mockery Manor, Jenkins presses Parker to contact JJ and task her with spying on Hilda, whom he suspects is running an "illegal operation" from the German park. To their surprise, Bette then arrives at Mockery Manor and asks whether Margot's offer of a full-time job still stands. Finally, back in Tokyo, shadowy figures are disposing of a body. It seems unlikely that "the girl" is their colleague's killer, but they are determined to find her and retrieve the item she was supposed to deliver - a priceless, stolen Vermeer. In this episode: a desperate Bette is given a mission, while JJ seeks help from an unsavoury contact, settles into her new lodgings, and makes an unlikely friend. Mockery Manor is written and directed by Lindsay Sharman. Music, sound design and editing by Laurence Owen. Hayley Evenett was JJ and Bette, Laurence Owen was Parker, Jenkins and additional voices, Lindsay Sharman was Hilda, Margot and Davina, Alasdair Beckett-King was Tomasz and Dodgy Eric, and Abbie Eastwood was Gretchen.
