S1 Ep 37EP 37: Why The Mainstream Media Has Lost Our Trust
Only one out of three Americans now trust the news media, putting the US in last place among developed countries according to a new poll. What went wrong, how bad has it gotten and what can be done to reestablish trust between the mainstream media and consumers? Steve Krakauer has worked at multiple networks and is now an independent journalist. He joins Mosheh to discuss his new book, “Uncovered: How the Media Got Cozy with Power, Abandoned Its Principles, and Lost the People” in our latest episode. We discuss a number of recent media struggles when it came to covering Trump, Covid, race and other topics and how that has further eroded trust. It all comes as the major media outlets have experienced business struggles–trying to maintain audiences and profits in the digital era—making all the issues worse. In this conversation, we also discuss some of our OWN experiences inside national news outlets that expose the bias and the deepening disconnect with the viewer. S1 Ep 32EP 32: Holocaust Survivor Leo Ullman Tells His Incredible Story
As we mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we talk to Holocaust survivor Leo Ullman. He was born in Amsterdam in July of 1939, which makes him one of the youngest Holocaust survivors– and the few Holocaust survivors who are still living today. Leo was just three years old when his family went into hiding in Amsterdam. That’s the same city where another young Jewish person, Anne Frank, was also in hiding. Leo was raised by a Christian family for 796 days. He’s since written a book called ‘796 Days’ about that experience and his family’s eventual escape to the United States after WWII. Hear Leo’s incredible story, what life was like for his family before and after the war, why they decided to come to America, and what he thinks about the resurgence in antisemitism and Holocaust denial. And hear the backstory of five missing pages of Anne Frank’s diary. S1 Ep 30EP 30: Supreme Court Hears Free Speech & Voting Cases. A Conversation With Sharon McMahon
It has been a huge week for the U.S. Supreme Court as it heard two of the biggest cases of the year. Their decisions will help dictate the future of free speech and voting for all Americans. One major case involves a Colorado web designer who wants to refuse to work for same-sex couples over religious beliefs. It goes against the state’s anti-discrimination law. (303 Creative LLC v. Elenis) The second big case this week featured Republican legislators in North Carolina asking the high court to grant them unrestricted power to set rules for voting and elections. They believe they should be able to do so without oversight by courts or the governor. It could dramatically alter how elections are conducted in the U.S. (Moore v. Harper) Mosheh conducted Instagram Lives this week with Sharon McMahon aka @sharonsaysso, who closely watches the court, to break down the arguments and take viewer questions on Tuesday and Wednesday. This episode features highlights from each conversation. This Week’s Sponsor: Boll & Branch Bedding & Sheets – 25% Off + Free Shipping | USE CODE: MONEWS After the 2022 red wave that wasn’t, Republicans are looking at a very slim majority in the US House and reeling from their second straight failure to take control of the US Senate. S1 Ep 28EP 28: The Dems "Undoing" In NY: Interview with Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) On Midterm Lessons
Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) discusses the lessons of the 2022 midterms for Democrats and Republicans. “The cruelest irony of the midterm elections is that New York was the only place where there was a clear red wave,” he tells Mosheh, noting that Democrats are ignoring public safety and crime worries at their own peril. In fact, Republicans may end up clinching the House because of the seats they were able to pick up in NY on Tuesday. Torres also talks about his concerns about the close results in the state and why they might mean that Republicans like Ron DeSantis may try to compete in the traditionally blue state in the 2024 presidential election. Torres, 34, is one of the youngest members of Congress. He also speak about his feelings on whether President Biden should run for re-election in 2024 and whether it is time for a new generation to lead Democrats in Congress to replace Speaker Nancy Pelosi. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. S1 Ep 27EP 27: How Women Leaders Change Companies with Julia Boorstin
Mosheh speaks with CNBC Senior Media and Technology Correspondent Julia Boorstin about her new book, “When Women Lead: What They Achieve, Why They Succeed and How We Can Learn From Them.” In her book, she explains how female leaders differ from male counterparts and why those attributes (including vulnerability, empathy and gratitude) benefit a company’s culture and bottom line. Boorstin also discusses why and increasing number of male leaders are now desperate to take on more traditionally female leadership attributes! She interviewed more than 120 women and men for the book and brings data to the conversation. She also dives into why women are still not making it into the C-suite despite now being the majority of the college graduates. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. S1 Ep 25EP 25: Can The Iranian Revolution Succeed? with Reza Aslan
The Iranian Islamic regime is currently up against the biggest threat in more than 40 years. Can this coalition of protesters succeed in bringing down the dictatorship? Mosheh recently spoke to Iran expert and NY Times bestselling author, Reza Aslan, who has a new book out: An American Martyr in Persia. Aslan was born in Iran and his family escaped the rise of the Islamic regime in 1979. We discuss his family history, what led us to the current revolution and what is next. We go through various scenarios on why this revolution might succeed as well as what might cause it to fail. We also discuss his book, which tells the extraordinarily compelling, true story of Howard Baskerville, 22-year old Christian missionary from Nebraska who became a commander in the 1906 Iranian Revolution. Baskerville’s story has lessons for the latest revolution, more than a century later. And finally, Aslan talks about the evolution Islam is currently going through and how it compares to how Christianity and Judaism changed over time. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. This Week’s Sponsor: –Athletic Greens – Try this link for 1 year of free Vitamin D & 5 free travel packs. (https://athleticgreens.com/monews) Interview: As we officially head into the final stretch with weeks to go until the midterm elections, we are taking the temperature of American democracy in this edition. Mosheh had the opportunity to sit down with CBS Chief Washington Correspondent Major Garrett and elections expert David Becker to talk about their new book: 'The Big Truth.' In our interview, Becker and Garrett delve into the dangers of the escalating rhetoric (like calling your political opponents “enemies”), the persistent 2020 election fraud claims and how they have warped views of the validity of American elections. They lay out the dire consequences it could have on next month's midterm elections and beyond…for our democracy. We also compare our current challenges to the 1960s and 70s--the last time it felt like this country was coming apart. They explain why this time is more dangerous. But, rest assured, it is not all doom and gloom. At the end, we talk about the solutions. If you care about this country and our democracy, this is an important listen. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. S1 Ep 23EP 23: A Fact Check On Climate Change, Hurricanes and The Weather
As we assess the damage from Hurricane Ian, we take a deeper look in this episode at the storm and the impact of climate change on major weather events. Meteorologist Matthew Cappucci was on the front lines as Ian hit Florida and joined me for a fascinating conversation taking us inside a Category 4 hurricane. At one point, he was driving around in the eye of the storm and got two flat tires! He recounts that story and we talk about what he thinks viewers gain from reporters standing out in the middle of the hurricanes. Cappucci also takes us through the numbers on how much more accurate forecasts have gotten through the years. We also learn his big 3 lessons from Ian for anyone who is ever in the path of a hurricane and is not sure whether to evacuate. The back half of the conversation is about all things climate change, weather and media coverage. Cappucci gives us an honest take on where science is actually at on climate change and the weather, what frustrates him about media (all or nothing) coverage of climate these days. He explains what weather events are actually being impacted by climate change and what is just weather being weather. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. A year after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, we are still learning brand new details about the chaotic and deadly final weeks and days. It focuses on the final 18 days at Kabul airport with new exclusive footage and conversations with the US Marines who were there, the Afghans trying to flee, as well as Taliban leaders who were on site. S1 Ep 21EP 21: Ken Burns Goes Inside America & the Holocaust
Decades after the Holocaust, we continue to learn new details about what took place and how the world did (and didn’t) react. This edition looks at a new film on what the U.S. leaders and the public knew before and during the war. Mosheh speaks to documentary filmmaker Ken Burns and his co-director Sarah Botstein, who have produced some of the most highly-acclaimed documentaries in television history. We discuss their newest documentary, "The U.S. and the Holocaust" - which casts a critical light on America’s actions in the lead up and and in response to, one of history's greatest horrors. The film looks at WWII-era America, including how prominent politicians, journalists, and celebrities reacted to the atrocities of the Holocaust, and how it shaped U.S. history. We also look at American anti-immigrant and anti-semitic sentiment in the leadup to and after the Holocaust, as well as how US government treatment of Black and Native Americans may have inspired some of Adolf Hitler’s policies. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. After the most recent presidential elections, there are ongoing questions about the accuracy of polling and which ones to trust. And whenever I post a story about a poll, I get so many requests to do more on this topic. Enter Anthony Salvanto, CBS News' director of elections and surveys. He is also the author of “Where Did You Get This Number? A Pollster’s Guide To Making Sense of the World.” I talked to him about how pollsters get a true picture of the mood and sentiment of the country and why 1,000 people is the right sample size for both a city the size of Chicago and the entire US population. His answer: We need to think about the accuracy of a poll the same way we get a sense for how a bowl of soup or spaghetti sauce tastes. From one spoonful. More on that analogy in our interview, as well as his answers on how the internet has changed polling, his response to critics, which populations are the most difficult to capture and why polls have more power than ever before. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. S1 Ep 19EP 19: JFK Assassination: What Is The CIA Still Hiding?
Nearly 60 years after assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the US government continues to keep thousands of files classified. President Trump and most recently President Biden both decided to block access to key archival documents (on the advice of the CIA) despite a law that says everything should have been released by now. Former Washington Post reporter and author Jefferson Morley, one of the most credible authorities on the assassination joined Mosheh for a conversation last fall. What is the CIA still withholding from the public and why? What did they know about Lee Harvey Oswald's actions in the lead up to November 22, 1963 and why were so many CIA officials tracking his movements before the assassination? And could Oswald have pulled this off alone or was he being coached and assisted by any others? Morley is the editor of the JFK Facts blog, author of several books on the intelligence community and has spent a career exploring what happened and fighting for the government to release everything it knows. In our conversation, he takes a fact-based approach to break down what we know as well as what is being withheld and why....all these decades later. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. S1 Ep 13EP 13: Former CIA Boss Talks China War Threat (Part 1)
How close are we to a potential military conflict between China and Taiwan? Tensions are high with the Chinese conducting live weapons drills and practicing a potential invasion. It all comes in the aftermath of US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. Former CIA Acting Director Michael Morell joins Mosheh for a conversation to discuss why he is extremely concerned about a Chinese invasion in the coming years, the role the US might play, the state of the US-China relationship and why the Pelosi visit may have been a major mistake. He worked with multiple presidents, maintaining the CIA's relationships with foreign leaders, among many other duties. Notably, he was the only person who was both with President Bush on 9/11, and with President Obama on May 2, 2011, when Bin Laden was brought to justice. He is currently the host of the Intelligence Matters podcast and a senior national security contributor for CBS News. S1 Ep 8EP 8: Crypto Is Dead. Or Is It?
Summer is heating up but we're deep in a "crypto winter." Cryptocurrencies are having their worst year in a decade. The leading currency, Bitcoin, is down more than 70% from it's all-time high last November and the overall crypto market has lost nearly $2 trillion in value. At the same time, some crypto banks and so-called "stable coins" have gone bankrupt and several companies are laying off workers. Crypto skeptics are reveling and saying "I told you so," while the hardcore HODL'ers say it will come back even stronger! So what is going to happen? Mosheh interviews crypto-journalist and the author of the "Crypto Uncomplicated" newsletter, Zack Guzman. They talk about crypto’s past, what popped the bubble, how bad it might get, how to keep your investment safe and what the future looks like in this space. Guzman previously reported for Yahoo Finance and CNBC. His bottom line: We are finding out who is "swimming naked” and only the best crypto projects will survive this bloodletting. — Please remember to subscribe and review this podcast. —- Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning producer with 20 years of experience at networks including Fox News, Bloomberg Television and CBS News, where he was the executive producer of the CBS Evening News and launched the network's 24 hour news channel. After several weeks focused on the US, we are going global in our conversation this week as the US and major western powers hold meetings at the G7 and NATO. Eurasia Group founder and political scientist Ian Bremmer has a new book out, where he lays out the challenges and solutions to what he says are the three biggest crises facing the world: climate change, pandemics and disruptive technology. A leading thinker on global affairs, Bremmer talks to Mosheh about why he is an optimist and how the world can prevent catastrophe. In his new NY Times best-seller, "The Power of Crisis," Bremmer draws lessons from global challenges of the past 100 years—including the most recent pandemic—to show how the global community might respond. He also talks about the latest in Ukraine, what is next for China, Iran and the state of the Middle East in the conversation. ----- Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning producer with 20 years of experience at networks including Fox News, Bloomberg Television and CBS News, where he was the executive producer of the CBS Evening News and launched the network's 24 hour news channel. S1 Ep 5EP 5: Jan Crawford on the Abortion Decision
As we continue to determine the fallout of Friday's Supreme Court decision, Mosheh speaks to CBS Chief Legal Correspondent Jan Crawford for insight into the rulings and what they mean for the future of abortion in America as well as issues like same-sex marriage, IVF and contraception. Crawford has nearly three decades of experience covering the court. She has a law degree from the University of Chicago and has reported on the Supreme Court for the Chicago Tribune, PBS, ABC and CBS News. When Mosheh last spoke to her in January, she predicted that the court would overturn Roe v Wade and so there was no one better to get perspective on how the decision went down. Crawford brings clarity to the various opinions, why Roberts is effectively on an island, why Justice Thomas brought up things like same sex marriage and contraception in his solo opinion and whether it even matters. She then goes into what the various states might do next and brings a fascinating perspective to the history of the original Roe decision and how it may have actually hurt abortion rights long-term. They also spoke about whether cameras may come to the Supreme Court, concerns about the safety of the justices, the fate of the leak investigation and what to make of the accusations the justices lied in their confirmation hearings. It's a must-listen. S1 Ep 4EP 4: Supreme Court Strikes Down Roe v. Wade with Sharon McMahon
The Supreme Court on Friday overruled Roe v Wade, eliminating the constitutional right to abortion. It is a landmark ruling that will send the issue back to the states and create a patchwork of laws, as well as reshape the nation's politics. Mosheh spoke with Sharon McMahon (@sharonsaysso) hours after the decision to break down the ruling, its implications on abortion law across the country and the future of the Supreme Court. They also go into new polling showing three out of four Americans no longer trust the court and how this decision could impact future elections. McMahon is a former government and law teacher turned Instagram star, who has built a community of nearly 1 million on the platform. She breaks down complex topics in history, law and politics in an easy-to-understand way. S1 Ep 2EP 2: The Mo You Know - History of Juneteenth
In honor of Juneteenth, our newest federal holiday, this episode takes a look at the history of the day and what it symbolizes. While it was celebrated locally in Texas and other states for years, it was only officially made a federal holiday in June 2021. It is seen as a second Independence Day of sorts for many Black Americans who didn't actually get their freedom with the founding of the country. Today is the first edition of our new ongoing series, The Mo You Know, where we break down one topic in the headlines. S1 Ep 1EP1: Inside the Battle for Gun Reform with Shannon Watts
Congress may be about to pass the biggest gun safety bill in a generation. On the heels of the bipartisan gun reform agreement in the US Senate, @Mosheh speaks with an activist who has been on the front lines of the fight for a decade for some insight into what this means. Shannon Watts is the founder of advocacy group, Moms Demand Action. Watts was a stay at home mother to five when the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012 inspired her to do something about gun violence. She turned her Facebook message to 75 friends into the nation's largest grassroots anti-gun violence movement. Moms Demand Action now has more than 8 million supporters, making it larger than the NRA. Our conversation dived into the history of the fight, whether the new legislation will actually pass the Senate and what happens after that. Watts also talked about what she learned growing up in a family that owned guns, how she seeks to find a middle ground on the issue, what inspires her optimism and her concept of "losing forward," (aka how losing fights to the NRA has helped her cause).
