All those trades, all that Jazz & more Paul Skenes

Another wild day ahead of tonight's 6 p.m. ET Trade Deadline. Big names on the move included Jorge Soler, Yusei Kikuchi, Frankie Montas, Erick Fedde & Tommy Edman. On the field, new Yankee Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit 2 HRs & Paul Skenes hit a milestone. On today’s episode: Act I (0:41-5:16): THE BIG STORIES A huge day of trading began with a bang and continued with many other bangs. The Cardinals, Dodgers and White Sox swung a massive 3-team deal. Erick Fedde went to St. Louis, Tommy Edman and Michael Kopech to L.A. and a haul of prospects to Chicago. As the day progressed into night, Jorge Soler landed back in Atlanta, Yusei Kikuchi in Houston, Frankie Montas in Milwaukee, Lane Thomas in Cleveland, Michael Lorenzen in Kansas City and Justin Turner in Seattle. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was traded a few days ago. His second game with the Yankees began with his first professional assignment at third base. He not only played the hot corner flawlessly -- dare we say, Smooth Jazz? -- he went toe-to-toe with Aaron Judge at the plate. They both smacked two homers in a rout of the NL-leading Phillies, leaving the New Yorkers just a half-game out of first in the AL East. Act II (5:17-6:47): WHIPAROUND Paul Skenes became just the sixth pitcher since 1900 to reach the 100-strikeout mark in his first 13 starts. Bobby Witt Jr. continued to do Bobby Witt Jr. things. He hit a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning to cap a 4-hit night, then ended the game with a sensational diving play in the hole. Elsewhere, the Mets hung 15 on the Twins, one more than the Red Sox did against the Mariners. Zach Eflin shined in his first start for the Orioles in the first game of two with the Blue Jays. Vlad Guerrero Jr. -- still with Toronto -- led the way in the nightcap. Act III (6:48-7:40): LOOKING AHEAD What's happening today? What else? Probably more trades. MLB Network begins coverage at 9 a.m. ET and will continue all day past the 6 p.m. Trade Deadline. But that's not all. You can see the Dodgers and Padres from San Diego at 9:40 p.m. ET on MLB.TV. Busy weekend for trades; Braves lose ERA leader

Tomorrow’s 6 p.m. ET Trade Deadline looms large, and this past weekend was dominated by deals as the Rays emerged as big sellers and the Yankees, Phillies, Mets and others did their best to bolster rosters for the stretch drive. On today’s episode … ACT 1: THE BIG STORIES (0:38-4:40) To say that the Rays have been active is a massive understatement as they dealt third baseman Isaac Paredes to the Cubs, reliever Jason Adam to the Padres and starter Zach Eflin to the Orioles. They also shipped Randy Arozarena to the Mariners early Friday morning. As far as buyers go, the Yankees landed Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Marlins and the Phillies acquired reliever Carlos Estéves from the Angels. Got all that? On the injury front, the Braves were dealt another blow as MLB ERA leader Reynaldo López exited his start Sunday with right forearm tightness. Not great and it might force Atlanta into acquiring rotation help in a hurry. ACT 2: AROUND THE LEAGUE (4:41-7:24) Elsewhere in the Majors, rookie shortstop Xavier Edwards hit the first pitch of the game for career homer No. 1, then proceeded to cap off his afternoon with an infield single to complete the second cycle in Marlins history. In Baltimore, Cedric Mullins made a sick over-the-shoulder grab in center to help secure a win over the Padres, Steven Kwan knocked a go-ahead homer to carry the Guardians past the Phillies, and the Dodgers got a big boost from No. 4 prospect River Ryan, who allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings to help beat the Astros. ACT 3: LOOKING AHEAD (7:25-8:17) The Yankees head to Philly tonight to clash with Bryce Harper and Co. in the opener of a three-game series, and in Houston, Paul Skenes – who was tagged for his first career loss in his last outing – makes another do-not-miss start as the Pirates do battle with the Astros. Cease simply unhittable; Kershaw returns; a big trade!

A light eight-game slate featured some big-time storylines Thursday — and two late-night deals. In the nation’s capital, Dylan Cease spun a no-hitter – just the second in Padres history – and in LA, Clayton Kershaw made his season debut with a solid start vs. the Giants. On today’s episode … ACT 1: THE BIG STORIES (0:50-4:34) He’s come oh so close before, but this time Dylan Cease was more than up to the challenge, tossing the second no-hitter in the Majors this season as he dominated the Nationals. Not lost in the shuffle either was the win vaulting the Friars into the third NL Wild Card spot. Meanwhile at Chavez Ravine, Clayton Kershaw returned from offseason shoulder surgery to make his 2024 debut for the Dodgers with a fine four-inning outing in a win over the Giants. ACT 2: AROUND THE LEAGUE (4:42-8:16) The Mets edged the Braves with their seventh walk-off win of ’24, the Orioles blew a six-run lead before bouncing back to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Marlins, the Guardians came up empty and were shut out by the Tigers, and Max Scherzer – now alone in 10th place on the all-time strikeouts list – threw six innings of one-run ball as the Rangers completed a four-game sweep of the White Sox. Before we look ahead to this weekend, there were not one but TWO trades last night. Randy Arozarena went to the Mariners and A.J. Puk was dealt to the D-backs. Get ready for a wild few days until the Trade Deadline. ACT 3: LOOKING AHEAD (8:18 - 9:59) There are some stellar matchups that kick off tonight, with the Yankees heading to Fenway Park, the Astros hosting the Dodgers, and the Braves and Mets continuing their four-game set. The marquee matchup, though? The Guardians taking on the Phillies in the City of Brotherly Love. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Mets sweep Subway Series; Brewers lose Yelich

The Mets blasted five homers to secure their first Subway Series sweep since 2013, the Brewers beat the Cubs but lost Christian Yelich to a potentially season-ending back injury, and the upstart Red Sox rewarded manager Alex Cora with a three-year extension. On today’s episode... Act I: THE BIG STORIES: (0:40-6:22) Something about the Subway Series seems to bring out the best in Francisco Lindor, who accounted for two of the Mets' five homers as they routed the Yankees to complete their first season sweep over their crosstown rival since 2013. Christian Yelich, the National League's leading hitter, could be shelved for a while after landing on the injured list with a recurring back injury. The timetable for his return is unclear, but he will see a spinal specialist today and season-ending surgery is among the possibilities for the Brewers All-Star. That would be a devastating blow for a Milwaukee team that has exceeded expectations and holds a 6-game lead atop the NL Central. Boston manager Alex Cora received a three-year extension after leading his team back into contention, but the Red Sox still have plenty of room to improve, and perhaps some pitching to acquire at the Trade Deadline, after they gave up 20 runs against the Rockies on Wednesday, their fifth loss in their last six games. Act II: WHIPAROUND: (6:22-8:08) The Diamondbacks scored five runs in the ninth to steal the finale -- and series -- in Kansas City. The Padres won their fourth straight by drubbing the Nationals and could be poised to swing a big trade at the Deadline. The Astros’ 8-1 win over the A’s and the Angels’ 2-1 win over the Mariners gave Houston a 1-game lead over Seattle in the AL West. The Pirates blanked the Cardinals to win the series and continue their climb up the NL Wild Card standings. Elly De La Cruz notched his 50th and 51st stolen bases in the Reds' win over the Braves. Act III: LOOKING AHEAD: (8:08-9:18) Dodgers legend Clayton Kershaw makes his season debut today after a long recovery from offseason shoulder surgery. The Mets open a home series against the Braves with a chance to usurp their division rival for the top spot in the NL Wild Card standings. Learn more about your ad choices. Skenes stellar but loses 1st, Mets silence Judge

Paul Skenes pitched into the 9th for the first time in the Majors -- and was still hitting 100 mph -- but that didn't prevent his first loss as a Pirate. The Mets had a plan for Aaron Judge. He didn't beat them and neither did the Yankees. On today’s episode: Act I: THE BIG STORIES (0:43-2:25) Pitching 8 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts and allowing only four hits, no walks and two runs seems like a pretty good evening on the mound. And it was for Paul Skenes. He pitched into the 9th inning for the first time with the Pirates but also endured his first loss in a 2-1 Cardinals squeaker. The Mets arrived in the Bronx for the Subway Series opener with a plan to neutralize Aaron Judge by avoiding him at all cost. They walked him 4 times before a critical 9th-inning strikeout by Jake Diekman helped seal a tense 3-2 victory. Act II: WHIPAROUND (4:21-5:51) The Mariners lost a 10-game lead atop the AL West in the span of a month and now they are losing players at an accelerated clip. A day after cutting ties with first baseman Ty France, they placed superstar outfielder Julio Rodríguez (ankle) and starting shortstop J.P. Crawford (broken pinkie) on the injured list. The depleted Mariners then went out and lost to the Angels for the fifth straight time. The only saving grace for Seattle was that the Astros also fell, dropping a second consecutive game to the A's. Elsewhere, the Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald tied a rookie record by homering in a fifth straight game. But Shohei Ohtani drove in three and L.A. improved to 5-0 since the All-Star break. Act III: LOOKING AHEAD (7:42-9:28) Tyler Glasnow returns to the Dodgers after a back ailment forced a short stint on the injured list. Former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray returns to make his Giants debut after being sidelined for 16 months by Tommy John surgery. The pair will square off when the NL West rivals play the third of four in Los Angeles, a game MLB Network will show at 10:10 p.m. ET. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Top trade chip shines, Witt on a tear, Skenes today

On today’s episode: Act I: THE BIG STORIES (0:39-5:37) The Trade Deadline is one week from today. The big focus is on Tigers star left-hander Tarik Skubal. Would Detroit trade perhaps the best pitcher in the American League? Skubal made himself even more desirable last night, if that's possible, with a strong effort in a win over the AL Central-leading Guardians. The Tigers have won 7 of 9. Who's even hotter than that? Bobby Witt Jr., that's who. The Royals shortstop had a three-hit game for the fourth straight game in a victory over the D-backs. Get this: He's on a 12-for-15 tear. You know who's not hot? The Braves. They've lost three in a row after falling to the Reds. But at least no one else got hurt. Act II: WHIPAROUND (5:37-7:35) The Giants and Dodgers resumed their rivalry at Chavez Ravine. Teoscar Hernández drove in all three runs in a 3-2 Los Angeles victory. The Astros and Mariners, tied atop the AL West after their weekend series, thought they might be getting a break in moving on to face the A's and Angels, respectively. They both lost. Juan Soto smacked two home runs in the Yankees' win over the Rays. Francisco Lindor also hit a pair as the Mets downed the Marlins. Act III: LOOKING AHEAD (7:35-8:59) Happy Paul Skenes Day to all who celebrate! Which would be just about every single baseball fan. Maybe not the Cardinals today, though, as they face the NL Rookie of the Year favorite and Cy Young contender in Pittsburgh at 6:40 p.m. ET in a game you can watch on MLB.TV. Bad news for Braves; not one but two huge homers

The Braves were dealt a big blow Sunday as Ozzie Albies suffered a fractured wrist and will miss eight weeks. Also, the Hall of Fame welcomed the Class of ‘24 and Jorge Soler and Shohei Ohtani needed just two swings to smash 951 feet worth of homers. On today’s episode … ACT 1: THE BIG STORIES (0:41-6:22) In the ninth inning of the Braves’ loss to the Cardinals Ozzie Albies awkwardly snagged his glove on a baserunner’s shoulder. It immediately didn’t look good and the news wasn’t good as X-rays revealed a broken left wrist. In Cooperstown, Todd Helton, Adrian Beltré, Joe Mauer and Jim Leyland were inducted into the Hall of Fame, and not to be outdone, Jorge Soler crushed a 478-foot homer for the Giants at Coors – MLB’s longest of the season – and Shohei Ohtani followed suit with a 473-footer of his own on Sunday Night Baseball. ACT 2: WHIPAROUND (6:22-8:30) Elsewhere around the Majors, the Yankees and Rays traded home runs – and slow home run trots – in a Tampa Bay win, Royals righty Seth Lugo strengthened his AL Cy case with a three-hitter against the White Sox, the Mariners overcame a Yordan Alvarez cycle to salvage the series finale against the Astros, and the Phillies put an end to the Pirates’ six-game win streak. ACT 3: LOOKING AHEAD (8:30-9:17) No fewer than four Cy Young candidates take the mound tonight as Tarik Skubal and the Tigers hit the road to battle the Guardians, the Braves and Reynaldo López host the Reds, Ranger Suárez toes the rubber for the Phillies in Minnesota, and the visiting Red Sox and Tanner Houck match up against the Rockies. Biggest 2nd-half storylines? Here are a handful

The second half begins today and the Trade Deadline looms less than two weeks away. In short, buckle up! That said, let’s explore the biggest storylines to keep your eyes on as playoff races heat up and players set their sights on history. On today’s episode … ACT 1: (1:14-2:45) CAN A ROOKIE WIN THE CY? PLAYOFF CHASES Fernando Valenzuela remains the only pitcher to win Rookie of the Year AND the Cy Young in the same season, way back in 1981. He may soon have company, though. In only 11 starts, Paul Skenes has established himself as the most dominant hurler on the planet. Not to be outdone, fellow rookie Shota Imanaga has been superb, too. Don’t be shocked if one of these guys takes home NL Cy hardware. Also, keep your eyes on the AL East race between the Orioles and Yankees and what promises to be a heated battle among NL Wild Card contenders. ACT 2: (2:14- 4:22) IS OHTANI HEADED TO ANOTHER MVP? 8 STRAIGHT FOR ASTROS? Though he’s not working his magic on the mound this season, don’t think Shohei Ohtani can’t win a third MVP Award. He’d be the first full-time DH to take the honor but he’ll have plenty of competition, including Bryce Harper, who owns two NL MVPs of his own and has the Phillies soaring with the best record in the bigs. Another storyline to watch? The Astros’ unprecedented quest for an eighth consecutive trip to the AL Championship Series. ACT 3: (7:04-8:07) AN EARLY SECOND-HALF SHOWDOWN IN SEATTLE And speaking of the Astros, they don’t have to wait long for a big-time opportunity as they head to T-Mobile Park tonight to kick off a crucial set with the Mariners, who hold just a one-game lead over Houston in the AL West. Should Skenes start ASG? Phils’ statement sweep

Seven no-hit innings with 11 K’s. The spectacular has almost become routine for Pirates rookie Paul Skenes. Which begs the question – should Skenes start Tuesday’s All-Star Game? Also, the Phils rolled to their first sweep of the Dodgers since 2011. Not bad for a 22-year-old. On today’s episode: Act I: THE BIG STORIES (0:54-2:51): Remember when the Dodgers let Trea Turner walk after the 2022 season? He seems to take it personally. The former Dodger hit a grand slam and singled twice in the Phillies' 10-1 win over Los Angeles on Tuesday. Turner is now 12-for-29 with two homers and seven runs scored in seven games against the Dodgers since joining the Phillies. Speaking of hot hitting, Reds rookie Rece Hinds finished a single shy of the cycle in Tuesday's win over the Rockies, making him the first player since at least 1901 with five extra-base hits in his first two games. Hinds has put on quite the display of power, hitting a 449-foot homer in his debut Monday and a 458-foot shot for an encore on Tuesday. Over in the AL East, the Yankees dropped the series opener against the Rays, falling to 5-15 in their last 20 games. Where do they go from here? Elly can't wait to see Shohei. A tribute to Mays

On today's episode: Act I: THE BIG STORIES (0:53-2:28) Elly De La Cruz stole two more bases in the Reds' 6-0 win over the Rockies. And yet, what De La Cruz did a day earlier might be even more amazing: The Dominican native said he was learning Japanese so he can speak with Shohei Ohtani at next week's All-Star Game. And he said it in English, not even his first language. Elsewhere, amid reports they would be sellers at the upcoming Trade Deadline, the reigning World Series champs have suddenly come alive. The Rangers whipped the Angels for their fourth straight win. And the surging Cardinals won again, over the Nationals, and now are not only in the thick of the NL Wild Card race but are hot on the trail of the NL Central-leading Brewers. Act II: WHIPAROUND (2:28-4:17) The Giants held a public celebration of the life of Willie Mays yesterday afternoon at Oracle Park. Commissioner Rob Manfred was among the dignitaries paying tribute, along with former President Bill Clinton and Barry Bonds. Also, the Home Run Derby field continued to fill up. Sluggers Bobby Witt Jr. and Marcell Ozuna were announced as participants. Act III: LOOKING AHEAD (4:26-6:02) Tonight, brace yourself for an NLCS-caliber matchup three months before October. It's the Dodgers and Phillies from the Bank at 6:40 p.m. ET on MLB.TV and TBS. And then at 9:40 ET on MLB.TV and MLB Network, an intriguing Interleague matchup between two teams that would be in the playoffs if they started today: Mariners at Padres. Sox-Yanks finale, Skenes makes All-Star history

Rafael Devers continued to hammer Yankees pitching. Tarik Skubal continued to make a case for the AL Cy Young Award. And Paul Skenes continued to make history, becoming the first No. 1 Draft pick named to the All-Star Game the very next season. On today’s episode: Act I: THE BIG STORIES: (0:55- 6:24) Rafael Devers crushed two more homers to give him 16 in his career at Yankee Stadium. They came a day after he reached 1,000 career hits. Boston's 3-0 win on Sunday Night Baseball delivered a series victory over the reeling Yankees. Tarik Skubal of the Tigers punctuated his All-Star selection with perhaps his best game in a season filled with big games. The AL Cy Young candidate fanned a career-high 13 batters across seven innings to complete a weekend sweep of the Reds. Skubal joined Mickey Lolich in Tigers lore as the only Detroit pitchers with 13 strikeouts, zero walks and no more than one run allowed in a game. Act II: WHIPAROUND: (6:24- 8:02) Paul Skenes continues to do things never before seen in baseball. The latest? The Pirates right-hander became the first player drafted No. 1 to become an All-Star the following season. He was among more than 30 first-timers named to next week's game. On the opposite end, Royals catcher Salvador Perez was chosen for the ninth time -- on the day he got his 1,500th career hit. The Phillies led all teams with seven players selected. Act III: LOOKING AHEAD: (8:02- 9:18) Chris Sale became an All-Star again at age 35 in his revival season with the Braves. Tonight, as he continues his bid to be the NL starting pitcher, he'll take on the D-backs on MLB Network at 9:40 p.m. ET. But first, at 7 ET on the Network, tune in for a celebration of the life of Giants legend Willie Mays. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Kwan joins leaderboards; Walker loves L.A.

Steven Kwan became MLB's new batting average leader after his three-hit day, the Yankees' recent struggles continued with a sweep at the hands of the Reds and Christian Walker made it back-to-back nights with two home runs at Dodger Stadium. On today’s episode: Act I: THE BIG STORIES: (0:59-5:18) Steven Kwan suddenly finds himself near the top of several leaderboards after his three-hit day gave him enough plate appearances to qualify and made him the MLB batting leader with his .367 mark. The Yankees' fall from the best record in baseball to second place in their own division continued as the Reds completed a three-game sweep in the Bronx. Act II: WHIPAROUND: (5:18-8:20) Christian Walker continued his Dodger Stadium dominance with two more homers, giving him five in the three-game series. The Nationals played their traditional 11 a.m. ET Fourth of July game against the Mets and prevailed in under two hours thanks to Jake Irvin's gem and Jesse Winker's clutch home run. Julio Rodríguez might be heating up after hitting a double and a home run in a victory over Corbin Burnes and the Orioles. Act III: LOOKING AHEAD: (8:20-9:17) Two of baseball's best rivalries are on tap as the Red Sox and Yankees meet on MLB Network at 7:05 p.m. ET, and the Braves host the Phillies on Apple TV Plus at 7:20. Isbel's incredible catch; Sale's All-Star case

Kyle Isbel helped seal a Royals win by making one of the best catches we've seen this season, Yordan Alvarez homered again to keep the Astros rolling and Chris Sale continued building his All-Star candidacy by picking up his 11th win. On today’s episode: Act I: THE BIG STORIES: (0:51-2:53) If you're not familiar with Kyle Isbel's game, you should be now. With the tying run at the plate in the ninth, the Royals center fielder covered 103 feet to make a snow-cone catch at the wall to help preserve a win over the Rays. Since 2023, Isbel has saved the third-most runs among all center fielders. The Astros are back, and maybe scarier than ever, beating the Blue Jays for their 13th win in their last 17 games. Yordan Alvarez, who was named an All-Star starter on Wednesday, homered for the third straight game. The resurgent Chris Sale turned in a vintage performance against the Giants, striking out nine across six innings of one-run ball. The 35-year-old is now tied for the Major League lead in wins (11). Should he start the All-Star Game? He has a case! Act II: WHIPAROUND: (2:53-4:38) A's right-hander Joey Estes tossed a "Maddux" in Oakland, only needing 92 pitches to shut out the Angels. James Wood, MLB's No. 2 prospect, stole his first base, scored his first run and recorded his first career RBI in the Nationals' win over the Mets. Oneil Cruz ripped a walk-off single to lift the Pirates over the Cardinals. Elly's epic Bronx debut; Ohtani's special homer

Elly De La Cruz dazzled in his Yankee Stadium debut, Shohei Ohtani hit a big homer as the Dodgers celebrated Japanese Heritage Night, and the Mets outlasted the Nationals in extra innings thanks to some help from a fast-healing hero. On today’s episode: Act I: THE BIG STORIES (0:44-6:58) Playing in his first game in the Bronx, Elly De La Cruz, who grew up a Yankee fan, lit up The Stadium by launching a 425-foot homer and legging out a triple with his trademark speed. Aaron Judge mashed his MLB-best 32nd homer, but the Reds held on to take the series opener. Out west, the Dodgers celebrated Japanese Heritage Night in the most appropriate way possible -- with Shohei Ohtani crushing his 27th homer of the season, a two-run shot that gave L.A. the lead in the seventh. A go-ahead homer by Joc Pederson nearly spoiled the night, but the Dodgers strung together three two-out hits to walk off the Diamondbacks in the ninth. Meanwhile, Brandon Nimmo was something of a medical miracle in the Mets' extra-inning win in Washington, coming off the bench to deliver two clutch hits just a day and a half after suffering a head injury after fainting in his hotel room. Act II: WHIPAROUND (6:58-8:24) Nathaniel Lowe had a bobblehead night to remember, homering twice to lead the Rangers past the Padres in Arlington. Jarren Duran went yard for the third time in as many games to key a Red Sox win in Miami. A top prospect's MLB debut, super tight ASG voting

The No. 3 prospect in baseball, James Wood of the Nationals, made his MLB debut last night vs. the Mets and showed what all the hype is about. Plus the latest update from final fan voting for the All-Star Game saw some big names in tight races. On today’s episode: Act I: THE BIG STORIES (0:52-3:17) James Wood is a name you will be hearing about often. With his elite speed, the 21-year-old Nationals outfielder was off and running in his Major League debut. He singled in his first at-bat, walked and also reached on an error in a wild 9-7 loss to the Mets. J.D. Martinez crushed a three-run homer in a six-run top of the 10th for the Mets, who then hung on for dear life. The resurgent Astros put a damper on Canada Day ceremonies in Toronto with a matinee win over the Blue Jays. The Brewers and Rockies rounded out a quiet slate in baseball with an extra-inning slugfest at Coors Field. Act II: WHIPAROUND (3:17-5:05) All-Star Game voting ends at noon ET tomorrow and some races are going down to the wire. It's especially tight in the AL and NL outfields, where Juan Soto and Christian Yelich are leading by slim margins. Act III: LOOKING AHEAD (5:05-6:16) There's a pitcher going tonight who is bidding to be the NL starter in the All-Star Game. And that's after being a reliever the past two years with no certainty of even making the Opening Day roster a few months ago. Also, Aaron Judge is ahead of his record homer pace of '22 and a Rangers rookie hit for the first cycle in Sunday Night Baseball history. On today’s episode … ACT 1: THE BIG STORIES (0:50-2:43) After a rough start to the season, the Astros are suddenly the hottest team in baseball and have hacked away at a once-double-digit Mariners’ lead atop the AL West to sit just two games back in the loss column. Injuries bite Phillies; Jays faced with decisions

The night started out great for Bryce Harper, the top NL vote-getter in Phase 1 of All-Star balloting. After that? Not so much as the Phils star appeared to injure his hamstring. Also, with the Trade Deadline looming, is time running out in Toronto? On today’s episode … ACT 1: THE BIG STORIES ( 0:48-3:14) Fans chose Bryce Harper as the starting NL first baseman in the Midsummer Classic. It doesn’t get much better than that. But after appearing to injure his hamstring late in a loss to the Marlins, fans in Philly are holding their breath. Making matters worse for the Phils? Slugger Kyle Schwarber left Thursday’s game early with groin tightness. Meanwhile in Toronto, the Jays have some tough choices to make leading up to the July 30 Trade Deadline. The solution? Just win and Thursday’s series-opening victory over the Yankees is no doubt a step in the right direction. ACT 2: WHIPAROUND (7:12-7:57) Elsewhere around the Majors, the Orioles crushed the Rangers in a rematch of last season’s ALDS showdown, the Royals eked out a win over the first-place Guardians and in St. Louis, the Reds coasted past the Cardinals. ACT 3: LOOKING AHEAD (7:57-9:10) All but written off after lackluster starts to the season, the Astros and Mets – both sporting .500 records -- are suddenly flying high and kick off a big-time weekend showdown tonight in Queens. Astros are alive; MLB's youngest player did what?!

The surging Astros swept the Rockies to reach .500 for the first time this season, Jackson Chourio became the youngest player to hit an inside-the-park homer since Ken Griffey Jr. and the A's made a bizarre baserunning gaffe. Act I: THE BIG STORIES (0:54-5:23): Just last month the Astros were 12 games under .500 and 10 games out of first place. With Wednesday's win over the Rockies, they extended their winning streak to seven games and reached .500 for the first time this year. Houston now sits just 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Mariners in the AL West. Brewers rookie Jackson Chourio, who just turned 20 in March, became the youngest player to hit an inside-the-park homer since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1989. MLB's youngest player is starting to hit his stride, posting an .840 OPS so far in June. Act II: WHIPAROUND (5:24-8-12): A wild sequence in which Kyle McCann missed home plate, and then was grabbed by teammate Armando Alvarez, cost the A's a crucial run in a loss to the Angels. Act III: LOOKING AHEAD (8:12-9:27): After splitting a doubleheader in St. Louis yesterday, the Braves continue a busy stretch in their schedule this afternoon with a makeup game against the White Sox in Chicago. Atlanta will then head home to face the Pirates on Friday. That game will mark the Braves' fourth game in three cities in three days. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A new NL rivalry is born; J-Ram's star keeps shining

On today’s episode: Act I (0:46-7:14): THE BIG STORIES: In the second game of a fiery three-game series between the Nationals and Padres, benches cleared prior to Jurickson Profar’s at-bat in the first inning. Right after the dust settled, Manny Machado blasted a two-run homer to set the stage for another emotional game between these sudden NL rivals. Profar, who delivered the walk-off single the night before, sent San Diego into a frenzy again with a sixth-inning grand slam that turned a one-run game into a five-run lead. The Nats brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but the Padres held on for a 9-7 win. José Ramírez showed yet again why he's one of the most complete players in baseball, hitting his 21st home run and making a slick backhand stop in the seventh to key a 10-8 win over the Orioles. Cleveland has won seven straight to claim baseball's best record. The Subway Series started with a bang -- several of them, actually -- as the Mets hit four homers to chase Gerrit Cole after four innings at Citi Field. Aaron Judge's 8th-inning grand slam made things interesting at the end, but the Mets beat the Yankees 9-7 to improve to 14-6 in June. Act II (7:14-8:33): WHIPAROUND: Shohei Ohtani hit a leadoff homer in the Dodgers' win over the White Sox, his ninth straight game with at least one RBI, tying a single-season franchise record. Tarik Skubal strengthened his Cy Young case by spinning seven shutout innings in the Tigers' win over the Phillies. Ketel Marte homered and came through with the go-ahead RBI single in the Diamondbacks' 5-4 win over the Twins. Act III (8:33-9:19): LOOKING AHEAD: Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds carries a 22-game hitting streak into Wednesday's series finale against the Reds. It's the longest active streak in the Majors and the longest by a Pirate since Jason Kendall hit in 23 consecutive games in 2003. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Giants walk it off while honoring Willie Mays

On today’s episode: Act I: THE BIG STORIES (0:54-2:57) In their first home game since Willie Mays' passing, the Giants all wore No. 24 to pay homage to the Say Hey Kid. Then, in true Hollywood fashion, they rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to walk off the Cubs. The Phillies turned the first 1-3-5 triple play in 95 years, keying their win over the Tigers. José Ramírez's 20th homer powered the Guardians past Baltimore as they became the third team to reach 50 wins. Still, the play of the night at Camden Yards might have come from a fan who snared a 108.5 mph foul ball with his right hand while clutching his phone and a drink in his left. Act II: WHIPAROUND (6:31-8:16) Vladimir Guerrero Jr. mashed a 471-foot homer -- the longest of his career -- over the Green Monster, but the Red Sox scored five runs in the final two frames to walk off the Blue Jays. Miguel Rojas had two hits in the Dodgers' win over the White Sox, pushing L.A.'s record to 23-0 when he has at least one knock. Elly De La Cruz demolished a two-run homer into the riverboat deck at Great American Ball Park, Rhys Hoskins launched a go-ahead grand slam to lead the Brewers past the defending champs and Jurickson Profar delivered the walk-off knock in San Diego's extra-inning win over Washington. Act III: LOOKING AHEAD (8:16-9:07) Tuesday's slate is highlighted by a premier pitching matchup between the Tigers' Tarik Skubal and the Phillies' Ranger Suárez in Detroit. Skubal is the current AL Cy Young frontrunner, while Suárez is among the top contenders for the award in the NL. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

(3:01-5:16) And Paul Skenes upped his game to a career-high seven innings while allowing only one run. Act II: WHIPAROUND (5:16-6:32) Edwin Díaz came on to close things out in the ninth for the Mets at Wrigley Field, but he was ejected before throwing a pitch following a "sticky stuff" check. The Mets hung on to win. (6:32-7:35) Sonny Gray took a perfect game into the seventh for the Cardinals. The Astros are suddenly the Astros again, having won five in a row to put some heat on the AL West-leading Mariners. And the Yankees lost their third series in a row, this time to the Braves. In the finale of their AL East showdown, the Orioles put up a 6-spot in the second inning and cruised to a 17-5 win at Yankee Stadium.
