Padres Trim Spring Training Roster: McCoy, Jacob Optioned, Gonzales, McKenzie, Duran, Acuna, Schnell, Solak, Reyes Reassigned
The San Diego Padres made nine roster moves on Saturday, optioning infielder Mason McCoy and right-hander Alek Jacob to Triple-A El Paso. They also reassigned lefty Marco Gonzales, righty Triston McKenzie, catcher Rodolfo Duran, infielder Francisco Acuna, outfielder Nick Schnell, and infielders-outfielders Nick Solak and Pablo Reyes to minor league camp. This leaves forty-four players in major league camp. McCoy, a thirty-year-old infielder, hit just one fifty-four in Cactus League play with a low on-base plus slugging of four forty-five. His career stats across forty-three big league games with the Padres and Blue Jays sit at one eighty-one average and four ninety-four OPS. Jacob, a twenty-seven-year-old reliever, struggled in the World Baseball Classic for Italy and gave up two runs in two-thirds of an inning Friday. Last year, he posted a five thirteen ERA in thirty-three and a third major league frames. With the roster down to forty-four, the Padres Opening Day picture is coming into focus, and expect more tweaks as they finalize the squad.
