This episode Keepers Murph, Dave, & Bridgett, sit down with Rob & Jesse, Head of Games at NecronomiCON! Campus Crier The Campus Crier is where we keep all the mythos related news and info for the podcast, this episode was recorded on July 14, 2022.  Niels, the man with the plan over at NecronomiCON Providence, has released an updated COVID policy on their website, you can find the link in our show notes, and has said that masks will be required for all events, and they are providing stickers for attendees to announce how comfortable they are with proximity to others. Niels is also recommending PCR tests before traveling, the same that is recommended by the WHO and the CDC, and will have KN95 masks on hand for distribution for those that might need it.  Avatar RPG has gone to print, finally! No word on when it will finish. Roll20 and OneBookShelf are partnering up. The apparent merger will allow users “to manage content across platforms for nearly any tabletop game, connect more easily with other players, and step into games immediately, all in one place.” Ankit Lal, the current CEO of Roll20, will continue as the CEO, while Steve Wieck will join the Roll20 governing board and executive team. So far as fans are concerned, this partnership will allow any PDF in a user’s OneBookShelf Library to be available within Roll20. Most importantly though – after some butt kicking by Bridgett, we are formally announcing our new Patreon tiers. Frankly, we have really just been living on the good graces of our supporters, who have been wonderful enough to just support us when there has been a distinct lack of difference between all the tiers. We are solving that today.  First up – there are no changes to the tier names or their cost. So if you are a backer, your tier will stay exactly the same. However, now each tier will come with specific benefits that we will now outline (and of course will be on Patreon by the time you hear this). For each of the tiers, you of course get everything from the previous tier. Freshmen $1: We’ll give you a shout-out and thank you on the show! You’ll have access to our exclusive, Backer-Only Discord channels. We’ll also notify you about scheduled guest appearances ahead of time so that you can send us your questions! Backers at this level also can sit in on Keeper Dave’s Trail of Cthulhu campaign, Bookhounds of San Francisco. You also get access to contests! Sophomore $2: You can now join pop-up events, last minute pick-up games, and other special events hosted by the co-hosts!   Junior $5: You are invited to exclusive watch parties and movie nights with one of the hosts! Grab your popcorn, kick back, and hang with the hosts for a movie night! These events will be hosted quarterly. Senior $10: You have unlocked access to private content to include Host-GM’d games, Team Up recordings with The Old Ways Podcast, locked bonus episodes, and more! You’ll also receive a unique annual postcard from your hosts! Host-GM’d games run monthly, will be pre-scheduled a year in advance, and offer you a tour of your favorite weird and horrific roleplaying games beside one of the hosts! Graduates $15: You’ll receive a PDF copy of limited-edition playable content from your hosts! That’s right! Examples may include pamphlet adventures, system agnostic scenarios, etc. We plan to roll out 3 of these per year. Professors $20: You, yes you, will be invited to join the hosts on air! Once a year, we’ll invite Professor Level backers to join the show and choose your own topic! Come talk, laugh, cry, and make fun of Murph on air! We asked for a bunch of questions from our Discord community about the Alien: The RPG. And we shall now endeavor to answer at least some of them before our inadequacies become too apparent. Bridgett’s Starter Questions How do you handle cascading panic? What are your favorite talents? Does anyone actually use that section on space combat? Real talk? Did you read it? Listener Questions: (James) Ibis: What rules from the core book do you want to implement, but often forget in the heat of the moment? iPwnedMSCS: How do you write agendas differently for early acts in cinematic scenarios vs later acts?  Do you write agendas differently for single Act scenarios? Could @Keeper Dave (he/him) talk about what from the five room dungeon concept did and didn’t work for his scenario? (James) Ibis: Would you rather play Alien or Aliens? Why? iPwnedMSCS: How intuitive do you find the chances of success with the base + stress dice mechanics? iPwnedMSCS: What mechanics do you think are well implemented?  What mechanics do you think could be improved? iPwnedMSCS: What do you hope to see in future additions to the product line? iPwnedMSCS: What’s your favorite chart in the book and why is it the panic table? JZahler: Can Alien be run as a horror campaign?  With only a single antagonist, xenomorphs, how would you keep it fresh over multiple scenarios?  If the solution is to introduce other non-xenomorph Alien threats, is it still Alien? iPwnedMSCS: How do you resolve combat oriented panic results in non-combat situations? iPwnedMSCS: How do you feel about the layout of the character sheet? iPwnedMSCS: Are there any content warnings, such as infestation horror, that cannot be removed without the game no longer being Alien?

HPL: Nyarlathotep Rising is a narrative game that will be released on PC and Mac. It follows the adventures of three protagonists in late 1929, just before the Wall Street Crash, as occult forces are at work to bring our planet under the dominion of the cosmic terror of dread Nyarlathotep. The game is intended for those who enjoy the atmosphere and horror of H.P Lovecraft novels, those nostalgic for Steve Jackson’s ‘Fighting Fantasy’ or the ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ books, and for lovers of narrative games that allow you to dive into multiple stories and histories. MUP Ep 238 — Sean McCoy, Mothership, and Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace Madnessssssssssssssssss!
This Episode, Keepers Murph & Dave interview Sean McCoy from Tuesday Knight Games about the uber-successful Mothership Kickstarter. Campus Crier The Campus Crier is where we keep all the mythos related news and info for the podcast, this episode was recorded on November 4th, 2021.   The big news so far as this episode is concerned at least is the massively successful Mothership Kickstarter which as of recording has over $700k in funding, and 7600+ backers! Murph, Dave, and Bridgett are backers and fans of the game and are super excited to see it do so unexpectedly well! Paul Baldowski has another KS running just weeks after the last one delivered, Cthulhu Hack 2E has funded and is making Stretch Goals with $23k in funding so far with 24 days to go. (Murph has backed it!) In a case of “why not see if there’s an update right before you record,” Paizo voluntarily recognized the new union of United Paizo Workers and announced it… while we were recording episode 237! So congratulations to UPW and we wish continued success in making working conditions fair and healthy for all RPG creators.  Cults of Cthulhu is out from Chaosium. MUP Ep 237 – Of Teens and Terror
This episode, Keepers Murph and Dave discuss building an age-appropriate horror campaign for teenagers. Which is in and of itself scary. So, how do you keep the terror in teen horror? Find out! Campus Crier The Campus Crier is where we keep all the mythos related news and info for the podcast, this episode was recorded on October 21, 2021.   This week we are most excited about the Kickstarter for Survival of the Able: Back from the Dead, an RPG about people with disabilities working together to overcome a zombie plague. It looks to do a great job of representation for the disabled community, is about zombies, and looks like a lot of fun! We’ve both backed it. We have a couple news items regarding Chaosium. First is the announcement for their new Cults of Cthulhu book that will appear in PDF this Halloween, with a print version to appear later.  Not only that, but they’ve opened orders for the 40th Anniversary limited edition of the 7th Edition rulebook. And finally in the ongoing saga of perpetually underpaid and overworked RPG artists, 35 workers at Paizo, publisher of Pathfinder and Starfinder, have created a union. There was a great story recently from Wired detailing the pretty terrible pay and working conditions for RPG creators as a whole. It’s definitely worth a read for anyone interested in our ongoing struggle with paying people living wages. The Discord Plug We have our MUP Discord and we are all there! MUP Ep 233 – The Many Projects of Alison Cybe
This episode, Keepers Dave & Bridgett interview award nominated fantasy and horror author, freelance RPG Writer, and all around rockstar, Alison Cybe! Campus Crier The Campus Crier is where we keep all the mythos related news and info for the podcast, this episode was recorded on August 29, 2021. Keeper Dave is very proud to announce the arrival of Apocthulhu Part 2, Terrible New Worlds. If you remember way back in episode 205 (which was August 2020 in forever-ago times), we interviewed Dean Englehart and Jo Kriel about their massive Apcothulhu project. Well, now the second book has arrived, which includes a scenario by yours truly. Do we want to talk about the editing process and how good editors (like Dean and Jo) can turn a pretty good idea into a great scenario? In what feels like a Herbert West style reanimation, Chaosium has acquired the entire Cubicle 7 Call of Cthulhu line, including Cthulhu Britannica and World War Cthulhu. This even includes the rarer Cold War materials, that our own Keeper Chad contributed to. The line is highly regarded and is sure to fill out Chaosium’s already growing line of materials – how quickly they’ll get it to shelves is yet to be determined. Hasbro has unveiled their own rpg system for their newly licensed materials, which include GI Joe, Transformers, and Power Rangers. This rpg line is not part of WotC, and uses its own new Essence20 system as mechanics. As an aging Gen Xer who watched a LOT of GI Joe and Transformers, (and who doesn’t like using 5e for non-fantasy games) I have to say that I am mildly intrigued. Kickstarter news: The Delta Green reboot of their original materials is well funded and sitting around $350k as of time of recording. Much like Chaosium reprinting their older materials that fetch extreme prices on the secondary market, Arc Dream is republishing their original book and other 90s materials, updated to their new Delta Green system. The Kickstarter ends on Sept 10th, I believe, and so there is still plenty of time to get in on the action. Friend of the show, fellow Call of Cthulhu and all around great guy Bill Adcock has… a sister, who also is an rpg writer. Nice family! Anyway, she is running a kickstarter based on labor rights in the coal industry called The Price of Coal.  Finally, the most successful RPG kickstarter of all time will be done by the time this episode airs, but whew! The Avatar RPG has crossed $7.5m. Here’s to our industry’s breakthrough. The Discord Plug We have our MUP Discord and we are all there! It has funded with $23k of a $1300 goal and still has 23 days left at the time of recording. The art looks sparse, but that’s what I would expect from a product of this type. You can get a PDF for as little as $9 and a physical starting at $17. Overall it looks pretty neat, and I’m trying to not back it. Free League has another Kickstarter out for two new products in their Forbidden Lands line, this time a bestiary of sorts called Forbidden Lands: Book of Beasts and a campaign called The Blood March. As we have come to expect from Free League, the art on display is absolutely gorgeous. And this seems to be a no brainer for any fan of the weird fantasy setting. You can get a pdf of both books for $35 or either individual book in print for $35. If you want both in print it will cost you $69. The project has already funded with $285k of a $12k goal, and will have another three days left at the time of this release. Good friend of the show and proprietor of The Old Ways Podcast, Mike Diamond, has officially announced a third campaign for their excellent live play series, but this time with a twist! They are currently accepting GM pitches for a new campaign run by a new Storyteller. Main Topic In preparing for Jon’s final episode, the hosts reached out and asked Discord listeners for questions in an Ask Us Anything. We covered the following questions with more to follow next episode… If you could worship any Great Old One, which would it be? With all of the flavors of Lovecraftian gaming out there, is there a type of game or corner of the HPL universe that would make for innovative/ must play gaming? If you would receive a salary for a year and a reasonable budget for support (e.g. art, layout, tech support, audio equipment),  what gaming-related project would you work on for a year? What are you curious about right now? What is something that is true about gaming that almost no one agrees with you on? There have been some cool releases in the past few years based on settings established in other media.  What are some other IPs that are ripe for a ttrpg adaptation? What episode(s) of MUP are you the most proud of? We wish Jon the greatest of luck and success in his next adventures. Goodbye and goodnight Jon!

This edition was collected on December 1st, 2020. Chaosium has released a new set of jigsaw puzzles over on their Redbubble store. The different puzzles include much of the iconic art from the company’s run and includes many Call of Cthulhu and Runquest images. A number that are from the Berlin sourcebook that look really cool. The first Apocthulhu book is available in POD! Keeper Dave got his contributor copy and it’s huge and colorful and lovely in many apocalyptic shapes and sizes.  You can get Free League’s At the Mountains of Madness from their store now! It’s a beautifully illustrated book, Keeper Jon already has a copy and can attest to it. Some news from Niels Hobbs and the Lovecraft Arts and Sciences Council that is pretty worrying for any of us that is hoping for a Necronomicon 2021. Niels has sent out an email and started a GoFundMe page to help cover expenses that have been incurred due to a lack of business because of COVID-19. He is asking for $30,000 in donations to help pay for rent, payroll, insurance, etc. Personally I have no issue helping them out and if I’m honest I feel a little bit guilty that I haven’t bought more stuff from their online store in the past. As of recording he has raised roughly 1/3 of the total in about 12 hours. I really hope that this helps Niels out, and that this allows for the massive undertaking that is the planning for a conference like Necronomicon to proceed in the future. Personally, I can’t imagine not going to Providence next year. It would seriously impact me if I was unable to go.  MUP Patreon If you haven’t heard yet, we have redesigned our Patreon and so far   the feedback has been all positive! This edition was collected on November 20th, 2020. Paradox brings Vampire: The Masquerade tabletop game development back in-house, the company announced Thursday. This comes after Paradox yanked the product line from the then White Wolf company after many Alt-Right and LGBTQ+ worries arose from the 2018 Vampire 5th ed release. Paradox admitted to having little or no oversight of Whitewolf and gave the product line to Modiphius to develop. In the last two years Modiphius only released one product, Fall of London, in that time which tried to change game mechanics and mythology. So Paradox is now managing Vampire the Masquerade in house under the World of Darkness brand.  Chaosium is releasing the Alone Against The Tide PDF just in time for Thanksgiving for even more solo horror adventures. The PDF is less than $7. There’s not just one but TWO Symbaroum Bundles of Holding. Symbaroum is Free League’s dark fantasy setting, and the bundles are for sourcebooks for the SYMBAROUM dark-fantasy tabletop roleplaying game, as well as all the Symbaroum Settings a GM needs for adventure in the primeval forest of Davokar.  Mike Diamond and the Old Ways Podcast are going to the Orient, specifically the Horror on the Orient Express. You can get it on DriveThru for $5. It looks like Wizards of the Coast is being sued again this time by Gale Force 9 for failing to approve products already agreed to be released. This is basically the same case as the Dragonlance suit from a few months ago.  Bayt-al-Azif #3 is out! It’s got a number of new scenarios, including 1920s, modern and 1960s; an interview with the Great Old One Sandy Petersen himself; as well as an article by friend of the show Dean Engelhardt. At 124 pages for $8 on DTRPG, it’s well worth the purchase price. It has articles and scenarios by a whole bunch of new authors, and I think it’s a great way to hook up with some fresh new content at a very reasonable price.  MUP Patreon If you haven’t heard yet, we have redesigned our Patreon and so far   the feedback has been all positive! Chaosium has appointed ambassadors to both their Miskatonic Repository and Jonstown Compendium fan content communities. Allan Carey is the ambassador for the Miskatonic Repository, and Nick Brooke is the ambassador for the Jonstown Compendium. The ambassadors will be the first point-of-contact for fans looking to contribute new products to each of those platforms.  There’s a new horror RPG on Kickstarter right now called Shiver. According to the Kickstarter, “SHIVER is a tabletop roleplaying game bringing tales of the mysterious, the peculiar and the strange to life.” The Kickstarter is already more than 200% funded. It uses unique symbols on the dice to merge storytelling and game mechanics, and fans can download a free quickstart PDF to try the game before committing to the Kickstarter.  If you act quickly, you might still be able to back Alan Moore’s Providence Compendium on Kickstarter. It is a giant 480 page graphic novel that fully collects all twelve issues of Alan Moore’s Providence comic book series.  Artist François Baranger’s next illustrated Lovecraft story is At the Mountains of Madness. It is being published by Free League Games, and is available now for preorder. François Baranger previously illustrated The Call of Cthulhu for Free League. At the Mountains of Madness will be produced in two volumes; volume one is currently available on preorder.  Gale Force 9 has updated their website to include more information about their soon-to-be released Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corps board game. A few review videos are starting to come out on YouTube, to include one by Shut Up & Sit Down. This new Aliens board game looks really cool. Keeper Jon can’t wait for his copy to arrive.  The Dee Sanction is a new RPG on Kickstarter right now by Paul Baldowski, the writer of The Cthulhu Hack. I’m just going to quote their: “The Dee Sanction is a tabletop roleplaying game about serving Queen and country in the late Tudor period, in a time where kingdoms vie for power, the Church splinters under the pressure of reform, and creatures of folklore emerge from enforced hiding seeking revenge against those who imprisoned them. You’re a bad person — sentenced to hang for dabbling in magic — given a chance to redeem yourself and earn freedom in service to Queen Elizabeth’s newest line of defense.”
