Ep 8383. Insomnia in Entrepreneurship featuring Chavalia Dunlap-Mwamba

Entrepreneurs let's have a real talk about how managing our need to rest. How often do we sacrifice our rest to just "get the job done?" Chavalia shares her experience and provides guidance on how to improve our relationship with sleep. Chavalia Dunlap-Mwamba founded Pink MahogHany in 2005, when she noticed the scents of once favorite fragrances changing without notice. Amidst these changes also came an influx of complaints from those whom she conversed with. Frustrations from an inability to wear or use certain fragrances due to adverse reactions such as headaches, rashes, and other allergy-like symptoms places urgency on her quest to create a line of products that gratify the senses without the addition of some of the less desirable ingredients. Ep 7272. Tailoring your business to a Black Audience featuring Lisa Phillips

Representation matters. As Black Entrepreneurs we may find that our audience may be comprised of people that look just like us. What ways are you catering and considering your audience? Lisa gives us solid advice on how to prepare for and maintain our ideal audiences. In the recession of 2009, Lisa Phillips lost her job and home to foreclosure. She was left with a 35k condo and only enough money to renovate the place doing the work myself to stretch my unemployment check. She reached the bottom; an electrical engineer with no job. Coping with my new reality, she came upon a strategy of owning inexpensive rental properties for cash flow that was possible, even when a traditional mortgage wasn't obtainable. As her strategy started to show consistent results, she started teaching others about it on her platform Affordable Real Estate Investments. Now, Lisa hand walks working professionals through creating their own passive income portfolio to $2,000 - $4,000 a month in income, which gives them the starting point to financial freedom. From there, Lisa always encourages her clients to think about what happens after they reach their target goals, and what their higher calling is after using properties as a tool to make that dream a reality. Ep 5656. Mental health basics for Parentpreneurs featuring Keisha Reaves

Keisha teaches us on what to look out for, how to address those issues, and how to support fellow Parentpreneurs. Keisha Reaves is a licensed professional counselor with a specialty in maternal health owns a private practice in Dunwoody, Georgia. Ep 3737. If they don't provide a way, we make a way featuring Judith Alston

Family, I bet you've never met a Black female beekeeper. As Black Entrepreneurs we can find ourselves in industries that we don't traditionally occupy and yet we flourish. Judith shares how she has been successful in doing so all while taking care of her community and herself. Judith's love of agriculture began at six years old. As a little girl, she always wanted a little red tractor. She wasn't raised on a farm but our family had hogs, a small cotton field beside our home. As a teenager, she worked with family members on the farm priming tobacco. On her journey in life, she continued to come back to agriculture, living on the land. In 2003, she began to work for a nonprofit that provided resources for minority farmers and landowners. She worked as the project manager helping farmers get their produce in markets. She educated youth on agriculture-related careers and to create school gardens. While working with the nonprofit she noticed they had a beehive. She inquired about how bees make honey. Ep 3636. We've got to take care of each other featuring Brett Hewitt

No one should approach entrepreneurship without wisdom and connection from others. This episode I get the wisdom of a local entrepreneur who has been in business for 22 years, and is seen as a staple of our community. Brett teaches us what he's learned and continues to learn in how to build a sustainable business that positively impacts your community. Brett Hewitt's life's journey was changed when a stranger walked up to him and handed him a book to read, Visions for a Black Man by Dr. Na'im Akbar. While Brett was volunteering in a mentorship program, he realized how important it was for us to learn our history and culture and be proud of who we are and later he became a public speaker at local schools, prisons and churches. While traveling to bookstores throughout the United States, Brett couldn't find literature that pertained to the Black struggle, the large bookstore chains, who had Black literature sections, would put it way back in the back. He thought it was a disservice. Those observations provided the spark for his business, Positive Vibes, which he started in 1992 by selling books from the trunk of his car. In July 1996, he opened his first brick and mortar store in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Through word of mouth, and plenty of community support, he's proudly celebrating 22 years in business. Ep 3434. How therapists become therapists featuring Deseray Hamilton

For those who have ever been curious about how therapists train, take a listen. The road to becoming a licensed mental health professional can be filled with bumps and hurdles. Deseray and I discuss the training involved to provide quality mental health services and she shares her journey. Deseray is a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern in the state of Florida, on her journey towards full licensure. She's a mother, pain to purpose pusher, and entrepreneur! After having a former clinical supervisor go MIA without signing off on her clinical hours, Deseray was forced to restart her supervision process, delaying her time to become a fully licensed clinician! From this experience, she created Supervision Support. Her company connects professionals seeking supervision with supervisors who are ethically grounded and are willing to mentor, guide, and develop new clinicians who are on their way to becoming fully licensed. Her hope is that what happened to her never happens again and she can build a community of mental health professionals who are passionate, honest, and committed to bettering the field.
